LAKESIDE (1-29-14) — Probably when the El Capitan girls basketball team gathered, the Vaqueros were not given much chance for success. No one was predicting the Vaqueros for a league championship. But so far, so good.

El Capitan scored one of its most impressive victories as the Vaqueros battered the El Cajon Valley Braves, 57-35, in Tuesday’s (Jan. 28) Grossmont Valley League encounter.

“They outplayed us,” said Braves coach MARC BOYKINS. “They did a good job scouting us. We were down by 20 at one point and we brought it down to 9.”

VALERIA GARAY paced the Vaqueros with 18 points and CIERRA CUTLER added 16 as the Vaqueros took an 11-4 lead and never gave up.

VALERIE RENFROW pitched in with 11 points and 7 rebounds for El Capitan to put the game away with an 18-11 scoring spread in the third quarter.

ANABEL RODRIGUEZ grabbed a game high 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

For Steele Canyon ASHLEY TAVIZON registered a team high 11 points.

“We paced them pretty well until the second quarter,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “We had 35 turnovers. When you face a team like Granite Hills you can’t afford to do that. The second quarter was not our friend. We felt good about the third and fourth quarters.”

“We’re not going to worry about wins and losses – just worry about our style of play. We’re building for next year,” Ruiz said.

Granite Hills: Madison Lumb 15 (11 reb, 2 blk, 2 stl), Deajanae Harvey 11 (5 reb, 3 ast, 7 stl), Micayela Hernandez 11 (2 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Anabel Rodriguez 4 (10 reb, 3 blk, 2 stl), Raelleah Moore 4 (9 reb, 1 stl), Sierra Rains 3 (4 reb, 5 ast, 3 blk), Emma Kubari 3 (2 blk), Delaney Casey 2 ( 2 reb, 1 blk, 1 stl).

HELIX 77, GROSSMONT 34 – A balanced attack paced by BRIAJUNAE SHEPARD’s 22 points led the Highlanders over Grossmont. Also contributing to the Scotties’ scoring parade was SHIRAH HANCOCK with 16 points and DESTINI ANDERSON with 11 in Tuesday’s (Jan. 28) Grossmont Hills League encounter.

Helix produced their season high scoring output in the GHL victory.

“I’ve got a bunch of wonderful kids,” said Helix coach PATRICK TABOR. “We tried to work on a different defense in every quarter, and we worked on three different offenses.”

LAUREN WEIGEL paced Grossmont with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while KEANA LOVELACE pitched in 10 points.

“Weigel has stepped her game up in the last few games,” said Foothillers coach GRACE CAMPBELL. “I am very happy and excited with the way she has been playing. When she plays aggressive and looks to score great things will happen.

“Despite what the score looks like, tonight our team played the best we have played since we started conference play,” said Campbell . “We are going to continue to grow, improve and fight to the last buzzer.”

“We didn't shoot the ball well but our two posts, CARLY RALEY and BRANDI McCRYSTAL, had big games.

BAILEY ALBERS paced the Pack with 16 points, while Raley popped in 14 points and McCrystal contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds for West Hills (14-7, 3-0 GHL).

Wolf Pack triples prevent upset bid by Santana

SANTEE (1-26-14) — Three-point buckets by VIVIAN PANELA and MEGAN SCOTT in the final minute allowed West Hills to deny an upset in Saturday’s (Jan. 25) non-league game at Santana as the Wolf Pack claimed a 40-38 victory.

“Santana played well, we were very fortunate to leave that gym with a win,” said Wolf Pack coach RYAN KINSER.

“We didn't execute the game plan on D and shot poorly from the field,” he added. “We also struggled from the line 6-21. We didn't play well tonight, we will have to pick it up in the coming weeks ahead.”

The Sultans were elated that they came that close to springing an upset over their crosstown rival.

Santana (8-12) led by 4 points with 54 seconds remaining before the Wolf Pack (13-7) scored a knockout with back-to-back 3-pointers.

Even in defeat Santana coach LARRY CLARK was pleased with his Sultans.

“We were down 10-1 early in the first quarter,” he said. “But we came right back, which is something we haven’t done. After the first quarter this is the best game we’ve played – hands down.”

EMILY KLOSS paced the Santana offense with a dozen points.

“She was a total standout for us,” said Clark .

So was TAYLOR ESTES, who finished with 10 points including a pair of treys.

Santana: Emily Kloss 12, Taylor Estes 10, Savanah Fenn 5, Dominique Morrison 5, Madison Barry 2, Kylie Brase 2, Savannah Garcia 2.

Long Beach-ST. ANTHONY’S 62, MOUNT MIGUEL 60 – DEIJAH BLANKS scored 32 points and corralled 10 rebounds for visiting Mount Miguel in Saturday’s (Jan. 25) loss to St. Anthony’s at the Narbonne Showcase.

The setback dropped the Matadors record to 15-4, with three of their losses coming against out of town teams.

“Deijah was in foul trouble a good part of the game,” noted Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. “She had to sit out four minutes in the second quarter and five minutes in the fourth quarter. She could easily have scored 40-plus points if she wasn’t sitting on the bench that long.”

Nonetheless, Blanks made 13 field goals and 6 of 9 free throws.

Trailing by two points with 4 seconds remaining, Mount Miguel had the ball under its own basket, but the Matadors never got off a shot as they turned the ball over.

“This was a tough loss and I attribute it to a learning experience,” Sandoval said. “St. Anthony’s played harder than any team we’ve faced – they were relentless, they never stopped. They had four players in double figures and we only had two. I guess you could say that says it all.”

KAMREE HARRISON contributed 11 points for the Matadors, while DEJANAY POPE had 12 rebounds.

Mount Miguel: Deijah Blanks 32 (10 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl), Kamree Harrison 11 (2 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Zaria Branch 6 (5 reb, 5 ast, 1 blk, 3 stl), Satera Bates 5 (7 reb, 1 ast), Rozlyn Pierce 4 (3 blk), Brooklyn Miller 2 (2 reb), Taylor Young 1, Dejanay Pope (12 reb, 4 stl).

CORONADO 37, VALHALLA 33 – In a second-half tussle which featured seven lead changes, the Island Girls rallied from a 7-point deficit to stop the host Norsemen in Saturday's (Jan. 25) non-league affair.

Sophomore forward Sarah Beauchamp scored six of her 10 points in the fourth period, including consecutive layins after Coronado assumed a 29-28 advantage.

Valhalla (3-8) answered when TIANA SILVER accepted a BIANCA GORGES pass to nail a 3-ball to move within a basket with 4:12 remaining. However, Norsemen center SHYLA CRIGER-PHILIPP, who led the hosts with nine rebounds, fouled out, allowed the Islanders to control the middle and grab several offensive rebounds to wind down the clock.

Silver paced Valhalla with 14 points and three assists, but the short-handed team ended the contest with just four players on the court in the final seconds because of fouls.

Coronado's comeback was fueled by freshman Ellie Nixon, who hit several jumpers from the right elbow (high post) en route to a game-high 15 points.

Valhalla: Tiana Silver 14 (5 reb,, 3 ast, 3 stl), Molly Lindsay 9 (6 reb, 2 stl), Shyla Criger-Philipp 8 (9 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Bianca Gorges 2 (3 ast, 3 reb, 2 stl), Julianna Qsar (7 reb, 2 stl).

Scotties remain on top after stopping Granite Hills

EL CAJON (1-25-14) — For the first time in three years, PATRICK TABOR’s Helix Highlanders knocked off Granite Hills, 66-52, in Friday’s (Jan. 24) Grossmont Hills League encounter.

“I shortened my bench tonight,” said Tabor. “When you play an opponent (like Granite Hills), you have to really shorten your bench. Your best players are out there.”

SHIRAH HANCOCK scored 22 points and 15 rebounds for Helix. She also nailed 4 three-pointers.

“This was my big game of the year,” said Tabor. “I have never beaten Granite Hills or West Hills since I’ve been coaching, so tonight was a big win for our program. I have so many weapons on my team – on any given night anyone on our team can have a big game. It’s a coach’s dream.”

BRIAJUNAE SHEPARD pitched in 16 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals for the Highlanders.

Freshman DANIELLE SIMMONS had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, while DESTINI ANDERSON grabbed 15 rebounds to go with her 9 points.

The Eagles led 29-25 at halftime.

“We did a great job in the first half offensively,” said Granite Hills coach JERRY PARKER. “In the second half we had too many turnovers and didn’t do a good job rebounding and we got into foul trouble as well.”

DEAJANAE HARVEY scored a game high 27 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and made 7 steals for Granite Hills.

MICAYELA HERNANDEZ pitched in 15 points for the Eagles.

“We didn’t give ourselves a chance to win the game,” Parker said. “We got out of synch in the second half. We just didn’t have it in the second half like we did in the first half.”

Helix: Shirah Hancock 22 (15 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl), Briajunae Shepard 16 (5 reb, 6 ast, 3 stl), Danielle Simmons 11 (12 reb, 2 stl), Destini Anderson 9 (15 reb, 3 ast, 4 stl), Raeshondra Dike’ 4 (5 reb, 1 stl), Camryn Owens 4 (3 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl),

VALHALLA 32, STEELE CANYON 31 – Usually when a team only scores 2 points in the fourth quarter, it’s meaningless. In this case the Valhalla Norsemen made it stand up to a Grossmont Hills League victory on Friday night (Jan. 24).

JULIANNA QSAR scored her only basket of the game in the fourth quarter, which was the only points the Norsemen scored in that period, which was enough to produce the victory for Valhalla (3-7, 1-1 GHL).

TIANA SILVER paced the Norsemen with 21 points, including 4 three-pointers.

SHYLA CRIGER-PHILIPP rolled a double-double the hard way with 11 blocks and 11 rebounds for Valhalla .

“We battled,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “ISABELLA WELCH is back from a concussion. “The ball kept falling off the rim. We fought way harder than we did against West Hills. Nobody on our team has true varsity experience.”

ASHLEY TAVIZON led Steele Canyon with 10 points.

Valhalla: Tiana Silver 21, Molly Lindsay 5 (5 stl), Shyla Criger-Phillip 4 (11 reb, 11 blk), Julianna Qsar 2.

SANTANA 44, EL CAPITAN 43 – The Sultans escaped with a one-point Grossmont Valley League victory over visiting El Capitan Friday night (Jan. 24).

CIERRA CUTLER scored 16 points to spearhead El Capitan ’s bid for an upset.

But her effort was denied in the final quarter when the Sultans gained a 16-12 scoring advantage led by MADISON BARRY’s 12 markers.

“The kids played hard,” said co-head coach RICK WILKERSON of the Vaqueros. “I was proud of how hard they played. We had an inside the key, wide open shot with 2 seconds to go, and missed it. It was very disappointing.”

Santana coach LARRY CLARK was impressed by Barry’s play.

“I was really excited for her because she played so well,” he said. “It had to be one of her best games.”

Santana: Madison Barry 12, Emily Kloss 8, Savannah Garcia 8, Dominique Morrison 6, Morgan Turner 3, Savanah Fenn 3, Taylor Estes 2, Kylie Brase 2.

El Capitan: Cierra Cutler 16 (4 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Kassidy Kygar 8 (6 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Valeria Garay 7 (8 reb, 2 stl), MacKenzie Mead 6 (7 reb, 1 ast), Valerie Renfrow 4 (2 reb, 6 ast, 5 stl), Adalida Moore 2 (1 reb, 2 stl).

WEST HILLS 59, GROSSMONT 22 – West Hills (12-7, 2-0 GHL) maintained its share of the Grossmont Hills League lead by blasting host Grossmont in Friday’s (Jan. 24) league encounter.

The Wolf Pack made it look easy behind the 14 points scoring efforts of BAILEY ALBERS and VIVIAN PANELA.

The Pack led 27-8 at halftime and it was all over after that.

“We played well tonight,” noted West Hills coach RYAN KINSER.

LAUREN WEIGEL scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the Foothillers.

“We are not out for the count,” said Grossmont coach GRACE CAMPBELL. “Our team has a lot to prove and we are going to prove it – just give us time. I will continue to have a positive outlook. . . our time will come!”

West Hills: Bailey Albers 14 (4 reb, 4 stl, 1 blk), Vivian Panela 14 (5 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Tila Whitaker 7 (1 ast), Megan Scott 6 (9 reb, 2 ast, 5 stl), Brandi McCrystal 6 (3 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Ali Lenhoff 6 (2 stl, 1 blk), Jessica Fondas 4 (2 reb, 2 stl), Clarissa Holder 2 (1 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Carly Raley (2 reb, 3 stl).

Grossmont: Lauren Weigel 8 (9 reb), Lydia Halcott 4 (7 reb, 1 stl), Bria Miller 2 (4 reb, 1 stl), Keana Lovelace 2 (3 reb, 1 stl), Sydney Schwartz 2 (5 reb), Theresa Mapp 2, Corrin Selander 2.

CHRISTIAN 36, CLAIREMONT 18 – The Christian Patriots balanced their Central League record at 2-2 in Friday’s (Jan. 24) conquest of Clairemont.

CHAYAN LOWERY led the way for the Patriots with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 8 blocks and 5 steals.

TAYLOR MILLER added 9 rebounds for the Patriots.

“We were able to execute our plays and were able to score,” said Lowery, who said she will probably accept a scholarship to The Master’s College in Santa Clarita.

Christian: Chayan Lowery 20 (11 reb, 5 stl, 8 blk), Brooke Owens 5 (1 reb, 2 stl), Annie Atterbury 3 (4 reb, 3 stl, 1 blk), Taylor Miller 3 (9 reb, 1 stl, 3 blk), Suzie Webster 3, Kate Wnek 2 (2 reb, 1 stl), Melina Jones (1 reb, 2 stl), Sage Salacup (1 stl), Kaylee Keith (1 reb), Melanie Johnston (4 reb).

MOUNT MIGUEL 82, MONTE VISTA 20 – In a battle of Spring Valley rivals, Mount Miguel mowed down host Monte Vista in a Grossmont Valley League encounter Friday night (Jan. 24).

DEIJAH BLANKS had 17 points to pace the Matadors (15-3, 2-0 GVL). She also had 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

KAMREE HARRISON popped in 15 points and BROOKLYN MILLER contributed 12 points, while SATERA BATES chipped in with 10.

Monte Vista committed 40 turnovers and scored only 4 baskets.

“It would have been even more lopsided if we hadn’t missed 20 layups, and we record that kind of stuff,” said Matadors coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL.

Mount Miguel travels to Orange County on Saturday (Jan. 25) to face St. Anthony’s in the Narbonne Showcase.

Mount Miguel: Deijah Blanks 17 (4 reb, 6 ast, 3 stl), Kamree Harrison 15 (4 ast, 5 stl), Brooklyn Miller 12 (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Satera Bates 10 (3 reb, 2 ast, 6 stl), Zaria Branch 8 (1 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl, 1 blk), Rozlyn Pierce 8 (7 reb, 5 blk, 2 stl), Dejanay Pope 7 (3 reb, 1 stl), Taylor Young 5 (2 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl).

LAS VEGAS (1-19-14) — DEIJAH BLANKS scored 22 points and added 6 rebounds but the visiting Matadors could not hold a 10-point first half lead in Saturday’s (Jan. 18) non-league game as they fell to host Bishop Gorman, 51-48.

League Previews / Predictions
Scotties resurface to top with Matadors

EL CAJON (1-17-14) — When it comes to Grossmont Conference girls basketball one thing is certain – nobody is going to beat Mount Miguel. Coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL’s Matadors are heavily favored to post their 14th consecutive league title. During Sandoval’s tenure the Matadors have posted a nationally recognized league record of 117-1. There will be no upsets in the Grossmont Valley League.

Things are a lot more complex in the Grossmont Hills League, where as many as three of the six teams have a legitimate chance of capturing the league laurels. In the Central League Christian will be fortunate to finish in the first division, as Kearny should get the nod for the title.

Grossmont Valley League

1. MOUNT MIGUEL
— This is a veteran ballclub anchored by outside shooters DEIJAH BLANKS and ZARIA BRANCH, while 5-foot-10 senior DEJANAY POPE controls the paint, skating toward a 14th consecutive league crown.

2. SANTANA — The Sultans seem to have gotten gradually better and better as the preconference season progressed. The difference here is coach LARRY CLARK’s squad doesn’t have a particular go-to girl – it seems that this is a fairly balanced team.

3. EL CAPITAN — Veteran coaches ROSS FURROW and RICK WILKERSON have done a commendable job of resurrecting a dormant Vaqueros squad. Junior CIERRA CUTLER is the ringleader.

4. EL CAJON VALLEY — JOANNA DELA CRUZ and TONI ENGLAND will lead the Braves out of the cellar for the first time in several years.

5. MONTE VISTA — Little is known about the Monarchs who are in a rebuilding year.

Grossmont Hills League

1. HELIX
— This is a team with solid balance, the roots are planted with six freshmen, so the best is still to come. The talent level is quality enough to win the GHL this season. Junior SHIRAH HANCOCK and freshmen BRIAJUNAE SHEPARD, DESTINI ANDERSON and DANIELLE SIMMONS are standouts on the team.

2. WEST HILLS — The Wolf Pack is a longshot for the title. Junior BAILEY ALBERS is the leader of a team that depends on depth more than individual talent.

3. GRANITE HILLS — DEAJANAE HARVEY and MICAYELA HERNANDEZ might provide enough firepower to lift the Eagles over the two teams ahead of them to repeat as GHL champions.

4. STEELE CANYON — The Cougars, who also have a new coach in PETER RUIZ, seem to get better as the season progresses. The big gun for the Cougars is sophomore ASHLEY TAVIZON, who scored 33 points in her last outing.

5. GROSSMONT — With a new coach in GRACE CAMPBELL plenty of question marks exist. At the moment BRIA MILLER and KEANA LOVELACE are the team leaders.

6. VALHALLA — This is a team that does not have a lot of depth, but will count on TIANA SILVER and SHYLA CRIGER-PHILIPP to spring an upset or two.

Central League

CHRISTIAN — Led by senior CHAYAN LOWERY, who is probably the best player in the league, the Patriots will be lucky to finish in the first division that Kearny is favored to win.

“Coach Tabor has got some talented kids, that’s for sure,” said Vaqueros co-head coach RICK WILKERSON. “They are just too athletic for us. They had 80 shot attempts to our 26. Every time they shot the ball they got the rebound. They were as big as we are but they’re quicker and jumped higher.

“Our kids at times played well.”

SHYLA CRIGER-PHILIPP produced 13 points and 12 rebounds, while MOLLY LINDSAY punched in 12 points and grabbed 9 boards.

Saturday’s (Jan. 11) non-league rematch was a different story.

ZARIA BRANCH scored half of her 8 points in the overtime. DEIJAH BLANKS scored 3 of her game high 20 points in the extra period.

Not to be overlooked was the 19 rebounds garnered by DEJANAY POPE.

LAKESIDE (1-11-14) — “It was a nail-biter all the way down to the wire,” recalled Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “We didn’t lead at any point until the last 13 seconds.”

VALERIA GARAY led El Capitan with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Renfrow grabbed 14 rebounds for the Vaqueros.

“We led the whole way, but we got in foul trouble so we didn’t play as aggressively as we normally would,” said Vaqueros co-head coach RICK WILKERSON. “We missed a ton of layups but so did they. It was a winnable game.”

ARLYNDA FILLMORE paced Steele Canyon with 10 points.

“Point Loma jumped out on us in the second quarter,” said Patriots coach THOMAS LOWERY. “They had a couple of new players that we didn’t know they had.

“At halftime we were down 22-11 but in the second half we played better. The defense kinda perked up. CHAYAN (LOWERY) was double- and triple-teamed, but we got the shots we wanted – they just didn’t fall.

“We could have shot 25 jumpers. If we had knocked down a few of those it would have been a different game.”

“We were down by three then had a strong second quarter,” said Steele Canyon coach PETER RUIZ. “In the third quarter we went to work and sealed the victory. I told the girls tonight we are starting conference play so it’s a fresh start.”

JOANNA DELA CRUZ led El Cajon Valley with a game-high 22 points, including 4 triples. She also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

“We didn’t play very well at all,” said Braves coach MARC BOYKINS. “We made 25 turnovers and made too many mental mistakes. We’re not playing very good defense. We had a three point lead after the first quarter. Then the Cougars just broke our press like nothing.”

Steele Canyon: Ashley Tavizon 15, Nicki DePaula 13 (4 reb), Arlynda Fillmore 9, Victoria Bott 8, Sydney Williams 7 (4 reb, 1 stl), Jule Loibl 3, Victoria Ethridge 2.

El Cajon Valley: Joanna Dela Cruz 22 (7 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Toni England 8 (6 reb, 5 ast, 1 blk, 2 stl), Ninwey Esho 5 (5 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk, 3 stl), Mary Grace Ronquillo 5 (3 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Nashea Lampkin 4 (3 reb), Sumaya Hameed 4 (5 reb, 1 blk).

GRANITE HILLS 52, SANTANA 37 – Santana coach LARRY CLARK wasn’t afraid to say this was one of the Sultans’ best, if not the best, game his team has played in Tuesday’s (Jan. 7) Grossmont Conference encounter at Granite Hills.

The Sultans battled the Eagles to a 10-10 first quarter deadlock and trailed only by three at halftime.

Granite Hills then broke the game open with an 18-5 spread in the third period.

“We lost our intensity in the third quarter, and they picked it up,” said Clark. “Overall this was a very good game for us because we held our own in three of the four quarters.”

EMILY KLOSS paced the Sultans with 10 points.

“We showed a lot of energy and effort in this game, and that bodes well for the future for us,” Clark added.

Granite Hills, on the flip side, played without DEAJANAE HARVEY (sidelined with the flu), but still came out on top.

MADISON LUMB pickedup the pace for the Eagles with 14 points and 8 rebounds, while RAELLEAH MOORE added 13 points and 8 boards for Granite Hills (6-7).

Playing without Harvey is a big minus for Granite Hills, so credit is due to those who filled the void.

“We did a great job tonight,” said Eagles coach JERRY PARKER. “Madison Lumb was assertive with the basketball and so was HALEIGH THARP. It was good to see a presence out of our players. We did a great job of following our game plan.”

“The girls were excited to see Coach CARLOS MOSS, who is an assistant coach at Santana,” Parker said of his former assistant coach. “It was tough losing him – he lives right around the corner from Santana.”

Granite Hills: Madison Lumb 14 (8 reb), Raelleah Moore 13 (8 reb, 2 stl), Sierra Rains 10 (2 reb, 3 blk, 5 stl), Micayela Hernandez 9 (5 ast, 2 stl), Haleigh Tharp 4, Anabel Rodriguez 2, Chase Robles (2 reb, 1 blk), Emma Kubari (2 reb, 3 stl).

Santana: Emily Kloss 10, Taylor Estes 7, Dominique Morrison 6, Savannah Garcia 5, Morgan Turner 5, Madison Barry 5.

WEST HILLS 60, EL CAPITAN 31 – BAILEY ALBERS scored 20 points and freshman CARLY RALEY added 11 points, while VIVIAN PANELA pitched in 10 in Tuesday’s (Jan. 7) Grossmont Conference contest in Santee.

“We shot the ball well tonight,” said Wolf Pack coach RYAN KINSER. “Our freshmen all had good games. Carly Raley led the freshman with 11 points.”

The Wolf Pack led 50-20 after three quarters.

CIERRA CUTLER led the Vaqueros with 12 points, while VALERIE RENFROW added 11 points.

VALERIA GARAY led the Vaqueros on the board with 11 caroms.

West Hills: Bailey Albers 20 (5 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk), Carly Raley 11 (1 stl), Vivian Panela 10 (5 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk), Megan Scott 6 (7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Jessica Fondas 6 (3 reb, 2 stl), Tila Whitaker 6 (2 reb, 1 stl), Ali Lenhoff 2 (1 reb, 3 stl), Brandi McCrystal (4 reb, 1 ast), Clarissa Stamper (3 reb).

El Capitan: Cierra Cutler 12 (5 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Valerie Renfrow 11 (6 reb, 2 stl, 1 ast), Valeria Garay 2 (11 reb, 2 stl), Kassidy Kygar 2 (5 reb, 4 ast, 4 stl), Adalida Moore 2 (2 reb, 2 ast), Mariel Vega 2, MacKenzie Mead (2 reb).

CHRISTIAN 39, MADISON 29 – CHAYAN LOWERY rolled a triple-double of 13 points, 16 rebounds and 16 blocks for the Patriots in Tuesday’s (Jan. 7) Central League opener at Madison.

“It was a really physical game,” said Patriots coach THOMAS LOWERY.

The pivotal point of the contest was the third quarter when the Patriots gained a 15-4 advantage.

Christian: Chayan Lowery 13 (16 reb, 16 blk, 4 stl), Taylor Miller 9 (5 reb, 4 stl), Brooke Owens 8 (1 reb), Melina Jones 4 (2 reb), Melanie Johnston 3, Annie Atterbury 2 (1 reb, 1 stl).

MONTE VISTA 56, GROSSMONT 37 – Monte Vista overpowered the Grossmont Foothillers in Tuesday’s (Jan. 7) Grossmont Conference contest.

The Foothillers went 5 of 22 from the free throw line.

“That killed us,” said Grossmont coach GRACE CAMPBELL. “And we got outrebounded.”

BRIA MILLER led the Foothillers with 15 points and was 6 of 13 from the field.

KEANA LOVELACE chipped in with 14 points, including 2 of 3 from the 3-point line.

Grossmont: Bria Miller 15 (6 reb, 2 stl), Keana Lovelace 14 (5 reb, 2 stl), Theresa Mapp 3 92 reb, 2 stl), Martina Toma 2 (3 reb), Lane Griffith 2 (8 reb, 2 stl), Lauren Weigle (9 reb), Hanna Hibbs 1 (3 stl).

Scotties capture another Spring Valley championship

SPRING VALLEY (1-5-14) — The Helix Highlanders edged University City, 39-38, to capture the Lady Monarch Classic on Saturday (Jan. 4) in Spring Valley. It was the second straight tournament championship for Helix, which also won the Monte Vista Invitational.

The pivotal turnaround for the Highlanders was a 14-1 third quarter spread that led to the victory.

Freshman DANIELLE SIMMONS anchored the Helix attack with 12 points and 8 rebounds, and SHIRAH HANCOCK added 10 points and 4 rebounds in the title-clinching bout.

“We’ve won two tournaments in a row – the Monte Vista Invitational and today’s Lady Monarch Classic,” said proud Helix coach PATRICK TABOR. “Even our JV team won both tournaments.”

“Both teams were tired,” said Tabor. “My girls went through some adversity tonight. My six 9th graders don’t really know how to show mental toughness, but they fought through it tonight.”

“Experience is wisdom – that’s what I tell my girls,” Tabor added.

Helix: Danielle Simmons 12 (8 reb), Shirah Hancock 10 (4 reb), Camryn Owens 8 (5 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl), Raeshondra Dike’ 6 (6 reb), Taliah Hooker 3 (2 reb, 1 ast), Asia Duncan (1 reb, 1 ast).

HELIX 53, OTAY RANCH 44 – The Helix Highlanders got revenge against the Otay Ranch Mustangs in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) semifinal of the Lady Monarch Classic.

“Today was a rematch,” said Helix coach PATRICK TABOR. “Otay Ranch won the first time (51-46 in a post-Christmas game).”

SHIRAH HANCOCK scored 17 points and hauled down 7 rebounds, while freshman DANIELLE SIMMONS grabbed a game-high 23 rebounds, scored 5 points, dished 1 assist and blocked a shot to vault the Highlanders into the finals.

“Danielle Summers is going to be a beast,” said Tabor. “ASIA DUNCAN played well, with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.”

CAMRYN OWENS scored 9 points for the Highlanders, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists, while RAESHONDRA DIKE’ hauled down 12 boards to go with her 6 points and a steal.

Helix: Shirah Hancock 17 (7 reb), Camryn Owens 9 (5 reb, 7 ast), Asia Duncan 9 (4 reb, 3 ast), Taliah Hooker 7, Raeshondra Dike’ 6 (12 reb, 1 stl), Danielle Simmons 5 (23 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk).

RAMONA 45, WEST HILLS 43 – Once again BAILEY ALBERS was the sharpshooter for the Wolf Pack in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) championship game of the Wolverine Classic, scoring 20 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

“We started well, were up 14-3 half way through the first quarter,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER. “We played very poor defense the rest of the half and went into halftime down 2.

“We picked up the defense in the second half but offensively we played very poor and weren't able to convert,” Kinser added. “We got out worked and that was very disappointing.”

“It was a very successful tournament and I'm proud of the girls’ effort, we continue to keep improving.”

West Hills: Bailey Albers 20 (8 reb), Vivian Panela 8 (3 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Megan Scott 5 (7 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Tila Whitaker 4 (4 reb), Brandi McCrystal 4 (6 reb), Ali Lenhoff 1 (2 reb), Jessica Fondas 1, Carly Raley (9 reb), Clarissa Stamper (1 stl).

WEST HILLS 46, WESTVIEW 27 – BAILEY ALBERS guided the West Hills Wolf Pack past perennial power Westview in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) semifinals of the Wolverine Classic with 13 points, 3 rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Pack outscored the Wolverines across the board.

“The girls played great defense, pressured well and forced several turnovers,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER. “We were able to pick up the offense in the second half and pull away.”

VIVIAN PANELA added 12 points for the Wolf Pack.

West Hills: Bailey Albers 13 (3 reb, 2 stl), Vivian Panela 12 (1 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Jessica Fondas 8 (2 reb, 2 stl), Megan Scott 4 (4 reb, 2 stl, 1 blk), Ali Lenhoff 3 (1 reb, 1 stl), Brandi McCrystal 2 (6 reb, 4 stl), Tila Whitaker 2 (1 stl), Carly Raley 2 (2 reb), Clarissa Stamper (1 reb).

VALHALLA 38, EL CAPITAN 26 – The Norsemen survived a 2-point second quarter to down El Capitan in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) Wolverine Classic at Mount Carmel.

“I thought we played them even, except for the second quarter,” said Vaqueros co-head coach RICK WILKERSON. “I thought KASSIDY KYGAR and ADALIDA MOORE both had a great game.”

The Norsemen delivered double barreled firepower as TIANA SILVER scored 20 points, including 3 treys, and SHYLA CRIGER-PHILIPP added 9 points and 12 rebounds as Valhalla used the fourth quarter to overpower the Vaqueros.

“Our girls are coming on strong now,” said Valhalla coach LOWE LEASAU. “We were horrible in the first half, so I told the girls at halftime that we played without goals. Our game is based on playing with goals every game, and we did that in the second half and it turned the game around for us.”

KASSIDY KYGAR led El Capitan with 14 points.

Valhalla: Tiana Silver 20, Shyla Criger-Philipp 9 (12 reb), Molly Lindsay 6, Janel Kalasho 2, Julianna Qsar 1.

El Capitan: Kassidy Kygar 14 (2 reb, 5 stl), Cierra Cutler 6 (2 reb, 5 stl), Adalida Moore 4 (4 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Elizabeth Ramos 2 (3 reb, 2 stl), Valeria Garay (2 reb, 1 stl), MacKenzie Mead (3 reb, 1 ast).

SAN YSIDRO 52, EL CAJON VALLEY 48 – Coach MARC BOYKINS and his El Cajon Valley Braves could have easily left the gym after one quarter was completed as the Braves trailed 17-0 in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) Crawford Tournament contest.

Didn’t happen.

“We just kept fighting,” said Boykins. “I don’t think the girls even looked at the scoreboard. They just kept playing hard.”

The Braves, led by JOANNA DELA CRUZ’s 22 points, scrambled back and cut the San Ysidro advantage to 4 points before running out of time.

TONI ENGLAND added 9 points and 12 rebounds for El Cajon Valley.

El Cajon Valley: Joanna Dela Cruz 22 (6 reb, 2 stl), Toni England 9 (12 reb, 2 ast), Ninwey Esho 6 (1 reb, 1 ast), Mary Grace Ronquillo 5 (6 ast), Sumaya Hameed 3 (7 reb, 1 stl), Nashea Lampkin 3 (3 reb, 1 stl).

CHULA VISTA 43, STEELE CANYON 31 – Scoring a single point in the opening quarter certainly does not bode well for good things to come, as Steele Canyon found out in Saturday’s (Jan. 4) non-league game against Chula Vista.

Steele Canyon was 0-for-11 in the first quarter from the field and missed its first 19 shots overall.

“You can’t win games shooting like that,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “But we played much better in the second half (22-20).”

Steele Canyon: Arlynda Fillmore 12 (3 reb, 1 stl), Jule Loibl 6 (6 reb, 6 stl), Ashley Tavizon 5 (3 stl), Victoria Ethridge 4 (5 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Sydney Williams 2 (4 reb, 1 stl), Nicki DePaola 2 (2 reb), Victoria Bott 2 (2 reb).

RANCHO PENASQUITOS (1-4-14) — West Hills High bolted to a 21-3 halftime lead over Clairemont and never looked back in Friday’s (Jan. 3) Wolverine Shootout at Mt. Carmel High.

The Wolf Pack outscored the Chieftains across the board in a game that turned into a 52-20 rout.

BAILEY ALBERS set the offensive pace for the Wolf Pack with 21 points, hitting 8 of 15 field goal attempts, including a pair of treys.

“We were able to get everyone playing time and work on our zone offense,” said West Hills coach RYAN KINSER.

On Saturday (Jan. 4), West Hills, winners in four straight, will meet Westview at noon at Mt. Carmel in the tournament semifinals.

West Hills: Bailey Albers 21 (1 reb, 3 stl), Carly Raley 6 (6 reb, 1 ast, 6 stl), Jessica Fondas 6 (1 stl), Tila Whitaker 5 (1 reb), Clarissa Stamper 4 (4 reb, 1 blk), Ali Lenhoff 4 (1 reb, 2 stl), Brandi McCrystal 2 (8 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Vivian Panela 2 (3 reb, 5 stl), Megan Scott 2 (3 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl).

HOOVER 45, EL CAJON VALLEY 30 – The floor fell in in the third quarter in Friday’s (Jan. 3) Crawford Tournament game for El Cajon Valley, who was outscored by the Hoover Cardinals 14-2 in that period.

“We were down by 3 at the half,” said Braves coach MARC BOYKINS. “We had 10 turnovers in the third quarter. We came out and played great in the other three quarters, just fell apart in that third quarter. That’s what cost us the lead.”

JOANNA DELA CRUZ paced the Braves with 15 points and TONI ENGLAND led on the boards with 5 caroms to go with 8 points.

El Cajon Valley: Joanna Dela Cruz 15 (4 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Toni England 8 (9 reb, 5 stl), Ninwey Esho 4 (5 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Nashea Lampkin 1 (4 reb, 6 stl), Sumaya Hameed 1 (4 reb, 2 stl), Mary Awedich (2 reb).

TEMPLETON 56, EL CAPITAN 37 – KASSIDY KYGAR scored 15 points and CIERRA CUTLER scored 14 but the Vaqueros couldn’t keep pace with the Templeton Eagles in Friday’s (Jan. 3) Wolverine Shootout encounter at Canyon Crest.

“The kids played pretty hard, we just missed a lot of layups,” said Vaqueros co-head coach RICK WILKERSON. “But I think we’re getting better.”

El Capitan: Kassidy Kygar 15 (3 reb, 4 stl), Cierra Cutler 14 (7 reb, 3 stl), Valeria Garay 2 (6 reb, 2 stl), MacKenzie Mead 2 (4 reb, 2 ast), Elizabeth Ramos 2 (2 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Adalida Moore 2 (2 reb, 1 stl), Mariel Vega (1 stl).

DEL NORTE 44, VALHALLA 24 – TIANA SILVER scored 12 points to pace visiting Valhalla in Friday’s (Jan. 3) Wolverine Shootout contest in North County.

The Norsemen did all the majority of their scoring in the third quarter when they poured in 14 points.

Valhalla: Tiana Silver 12 (4 reb), Shyla Criger-Philipp 6 (8 reb, 3 blk, 1 stl), Julianna Qsar 6 (3 reb, 2 stl).

The Wolf Pack took a 27-15 second half lead in the Southwest game to ground the Eagles.

“We played a very poor first half in the first game but picked up the intensity in the second half and was able to score some easy baskets,” said Wolf Pack coach RYAN KINSER.

West Hills made it a sweep, once again with a strong second half in the game against Oceanside.

“We struggled scoring all game but pulled it out when VIVIAN PANELA made a 3 with 6 seconds left,” said Kinser.

“We played a little better in the first (and third and fourth) quarters but went in the tank in the second – just ran out of gas,” said Vaqueros co-head coach RICK WILKERSON. “They played one game today and we had to play two. We played a lot better than we did against Esperanza.”
