The 6-foot Young will enroll at the Western Athletic
Conference institution in Las Cruces, N.M., in the fall
of 2012.
It was a good fit for me, said Young, who
averaged 15.3 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Matadors
as a junior. The players, coaches and the general
feel of the school are great. There is a lotta spirit
on that campus.
Young also took recruiting trips to Utah State, Santa
Clara and San Francisco before choosing the Aggies.
The main scorers are seniors this year,
Young said. They want me to be a 3 or a 4 when
I get there. I was a 4 and sometimes a 5 at Mount Miguel
last year, but coach ROBBIE (SANDOVAL) plans to play
me more as a 3 my senior year.
Playing for Sandoval has inspired Young.
I like playing for him because hes a great
coach, Young said. You know that he loves
the game. Hes willing to help anyone who wants
help."
The camp is for girls 4th through 8th grades.
Registrations are now being accepted online at

Tournament director Vickery, the winningiest high school
girls hoop coach in San Diego Section CIF history, compiled
a record of 610-119, with 19 league championships and
9 CIF-San Diego Section titles. He was selected the
2002 California girls basketball Coach of the Year,
and coached the West in a 4-point victory over the East
in the 2006 McDonalds All-American game.
This years San Diego Classic July 14-17
is the largest high school girls basketball tournament
in the country with 256 teams from nine different states
and Australia participating.
State powers L.A. Windward, La Jolla County Day, Brea
Olinda, Long Beach Poly and Las Vegas Centennial are
among those in the fray.
Other top teams from the San Diego Section include
The Bishops, Poway. Mt. Carmel, West Hills, Westview
and La Costa Canyon.
For the first time since 2005 Division I college coaches
will be able to attend the 3-day tournament. That is
a major plus for this showcase that could land more
girls big-time scholarships.
Daily admission is $7. There are eight different eight
multi-court sites including UCSD, San Diego State, USDs
two sites Jenny Craig Pavilion and the Sports
Center, Alliant International University (Richard Hawk
Center), Westview High, La Costa Canyon High and San
Diego City College (Harry West Gym).
The complete schedule and further information can be
found on the website: www.sandiegoclassic.com.
Vickery launched the tournament in 1987 with just 8
teams.
What makes our tournament unique is that all
girls must attend the same high school, there are no
travel or all-star teams, Vickery said.
In 1995 we moved the tournament head quarters
from Santana High School to the RIMAC Arena on the campus
of UC San Diego. The sites have swelled to eight since
then.
As the tournament grew and grew, one team was always
involved Winslow High School from Winslow, AZ.
Much credit goes out to Winslow coach Don Petranovich,
who has helped spread the word about the tournament
to the Arizona teams. He is also the only coach to have
participated every year of the event.
The San Diego Classic is a true family affair. Wades
wife NANCY is the site manager of UC San Diego and is
in charge of all mailings and administrative tasks that
happen before the tournament. Their two children, ADAM
and CARINA, stuff envelopes, collect score sheets, sell
programs and t-shirts, and do many other miscellaneous
tasks both prior to and during the tournament. Wades
older brother STEVE, a very successful baseball coach
at El Capitan High School, is the site manager at Alliant
and San Diego State University. His sister, SUE KUTZNER,
sells tickets and t-shirts also at San Diego State.
He replaces Bob McHeffey, who stepped down as the Wolverines
girls basketball mentor at the conclusion of the 2011
season. Quinones will have some big shoes to fill as
he follows McHeffey, who led the Wolverines to their
first San Diego CIF Division II Championship and drove
the team into the Southern California semifinals last
season.
This is a great situation and I feel fortunate
to have this chance, Quinones said. Westview
is a great program and they have all but two girls returning
from last years team. Im excited to have
the chance to be a part of it.
Quinones began his high school coaching career as a
seven-year assistant for JEFF ARMSTRONG with the boys
basketball program at West Hills. He moved into girls
basketball as coach at Steele Canyon where he toiled
five years at the Cougars helm. He spent the last four
seasons directing the El Capitan girls.
We are playing 32 games this summer to get ready
for the season, said Quinones, who will continue
to serve El Capitan as a Guidance Information Specialist
in the counseling apartment.
East County girls basketball coaching opening are widespread
this season as Grossmont, Steele Canyon and Helix as
well as El Capitan are seeking applicants.
The current coach MEGAN LONG has had
to resign for medical reasons.
Id like to continue, the 29-year-old
Long admitted. But I have been diagnosed with
an Acid-Reflux condition.
Her doctors have told her that she will lose her voice
if she continues coaching her crew at the same fever
pitch. Barking out orders has been banned by her doctors.
They told me if I yell at the current rate I
do I will lose my voice, Long said.
In her three seasons at the Grossmont helm Longs
Foothillers compiled a 49-34 record, raising the program
from a fifth-place finish, to third, then last season
to runners-up in the Grossmont Hills League.
Grossmont athletic director FRANK FOGGIANO said he
is seeking a replacement. Interested parties can call
him at (619) 668-6144 or by email.
