Grossmont Hills League, led by Granite Hills
superstar and East County Sports.com Player of
the Year, SKYLAR WILLIAMS, was paired with a handful
of Wolf Pack teammates that helped her over-match
the Grossmont Valley League on paper and on the
court.
West Hills' EMILY COLE stole the show, scoring
21 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field,
including four shots from behind the arc.
Cole also threw gas onto the coals during the
3-point shootout, winning it convincingly and
added even more fuel to the fire by taking home
the MVP honors in an 85-57 Grossmont Hills victory
in the 15th annual EastCountySports.com All-Star
Showcase at El Cajon Valley High School Friday
(Apr. 5).
Cole's Wolf Pack teammate, JESSICA SCOTT, posted
a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds
and Williams added 11 points along with 7 boards
and 5 steals to easily secure the 28-point triumph.
In addition, the third quarter ended on a half-court
basket by Valhalla's KANDICE KALASHO.
Scott and West Hills classmate MARTIN PANAYOTOV
paired up to take home the 2-ball hardware.
Girls game MVP Emily Cole

(right), with Wanda Dickens of ECS.com
Cole also won the
3-point shooting contest.
ANDRE NIKKITA showed it was not only the home
of the free, but also the land of the Braves.
The 6-foot-1 sharp-shooter scored an EastCountySports.com
All-Star scoring record with 42 points, taking
home the Most Valuable Player honors, leading
the Grossmont Valley League to a 140-129 victory
over the Grossmont Hills League in a barn-burner.
Nikkita also had 11 rebounds, but most impressively
make 18 of 24 shots from the field and 5 of 6
free throws. Nikkita hit 12 straight shots in
the second half.
Santana's CHRISTIAN BARRY won the 3-point shootout
at halftime.
Helix's ROMARIO WILSON won the slam dunk contest
at halftime with a reverse dunk that brought the
crowd to its feet, but Nikkita and Mount Miguel
's IZZY WAGNER eventually stole the show.
Wagner finished the game with 30 points, 11 rebounds,
6 assists and two steals. He was also 12-for-24
from the field and shared the team high with 3
treys.
Helixs KAELEN MITCHELL led the Grossmont
Hills squad with 37 points, knocking down 13 of
22 shots from the field, including 3 treys. He
also led the team with a dozen rebounds.

GIRLS
The season that wouldn't end All-Star Game, 3-point shooting
contest, both go into overtime
During a two-minute overtime session, Granite
Hills HAILEY GARNER and West Hills
JENESIS HAYES hit a free throw apiece, giving
the GHL All-Stars their margin of victory.
El Cajon Valleys CHELSEA BALL, who scored
14 points and grabbed 23 rebounds for the Grossmont
Valley All-Stars, earned Most Valuable Player
Awards despite the setback.
The post-season awards have mounted up for Mount
Miguel's SHAY YOUNG and Granite Hills' JESSICA
HARRIS. Each won Player of the Year in their respective
leagues, but Young was the SDCIF recipient.
So in the girls 3-Point Contest it seemed only
fitting that the dukes would duke it out against
each other one more time, but this time it would
take a little more time than expected.
Young crushed the competition in the opening
round with an 11 spot. For Harris it wasn't as
easy as she had to win a 3-way playoff to advance
into the finals.
Then the fun began.
Harris went out and put up a 7 spot and looked
dead to rights once Young sat on 7 with 18 seconds
left in her round. Only needing one more swish
for a title she just couldn't find the stroke
she needed and overtime was called.
With 30 seconds on the clock Harris notched an
impressive 6, but Young hung right with her making
5 of her first 7 shots, but then it was deja vu
as she went cold again. As the scoreboard buzzer
sounded Young was just short and put her hands
on her head and yelled in agony as Harris hoisted
the trophy.

SLAM DUNK CONTEST: HERE
ALL-STAR GAME: HERE
BOYS
Mount Miguel's Booker named MVP
in 20-point romp by Grossmont Valley
MVP MARCUS BOOKER of Mount Miguel directed the charge
as the GVL galloped to a 29-14 first quarter lead and
never looked back.
Booker finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists
and one steal for the winners. Monte Vistas K.J.
HOUSTON added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for
the winners.
Clearly the highlight of the evening were the extra
activities three-point shooting contest and the
dunking derby.
When it comes to sheer excitement, there was Monte
Vista's REUBEN NWANDO...and then there is the rest of
the field. The 6-foot-2 guard has a 45-inch vertical
jump and has spent the entire season dazzling crowds
not only with his dunks, but with his rebounding and
shot-blocking skills as well.
So when the field was forced to face off with the slamboyant
Nwando in the Slam Dunk Contest, it wasn't really a
fair fight.
After breezing into the finals scoring 59 out of a
possible 60 points as judged by a trio of basketball
aficionados he had one last trick up his sleeve for
the finals.
BRIAN VALADEZ of Helix went first and on his initial
attempt of a two-handed windmill failed, he gathered
himself and went back up with it. Failing again would
all but call the fight and knowing so his windmill didn't
quite blow any breeze as he kept the motion tight, ensuring
he made the dunk.
Mount Miguel's 5-foot-11 Booker then mysteriously took
the floor and stood just in front of the basket facing
it. Nwando charged toward him and in perfect sync Booker
tossed it up as Nwando completely jumped over him and
threw it down with two hands to send the crowd into
pandemonium.
When he finally came back down to earth he turned to
see a perfect score of 30 as he then posed for pictures
with the Slam Dunk trophy in hand.
In the boys 3-Point Shootout, the odds on favorite
heading into the event was East County's leader marksman
on the year El Capitan's TYSON KYGAR, who netted 177
treys in the regular season and playoffs, but the underdogs
made plenty of noise to throw a wrench into those plans.

(right) sandwiching Thomas Butler (25). (Photo by Frank Price, youatplay.com)
With 60 seconds to shoot, Booker led the event off
with a solid score of 12 treys in the first round. Foothills
Christian's ANDRE JOHNSON then had the local fire stations
on standby when he made his first 7 attempts and ended
with a ridiculous round of 17.
The final two contestants were the crowd favorites
as the Vaqueros' crowd welcomed Kygar and AUSTIN BETTS
to the floor. Halfway through their rounds they were
both stuck on 6 and it looked as if the end was near.
Betts finished off with a round of 9 to claim 4th place
in the event, but Kygar got hot...blazing hot. His nailing
10 treys in the last 30 seconds wasn't a surprise to
anyone there as he moved into the finals.
Kygar immediately had to take his turn in the championship
round and you figured he would be a little fatigued
and Johnson would have an advantage, especially going
second and knowing what score he needed to win.
That didn't work out too well for Johnson though as
Kygar swished 17 more shots and ran his total to an
absurd 33 on the day.
After a slow start to his round Johnson sped up his
pace and maybe that played a part, maybe it didn't,
but only coming up with 12 broadcasted to the El Cap
faithful that their poster boy Kygar was going home
with the hardware.

Waters, who hit 7 of 14 shots from the field,
was named the GHL Most Valuable Player.
Granite Hills GARRETT LARCH-MILLER, the
winner of the 3-point shooting contest, added
21 points and 11 rebounds for the GHL, which also
received a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds
from Helix KENNY KEYS.
Grossmonts MICHAEL WNEK scored some clutch
baskets down the stretch to help the GHL snap
a 73-73 deadlock. Wnek hit a free throw to break
the tie and then landed a bucket to give his team
a 76-73 edge. Keys followed with a bucket to make
it 78-73 and that all but ended the game.
Wnek nailed a game-high 4 three-pointers, finishing
with 15 points.
Christians AARON HUESLEIN was the pick
for the Most Valuable Player for the GVL, hitting
9 of 13 shots from the floor for a team-high 19
points to go along with 9 rebounds. El Cajon Valleys
DOMINIQUE MILLER added 10 points and a game-high
17 rebounds for the GVL.
In the 3-point shooting contest Larch-Miller
nailed 32 treys in the two-round event to edge
Waters, who totaled 26 triples.
Scott was named the GHL All-Stars Most Valuable
Player after registering a game-high 18 points,
12 rebounds and 7 steals.
Monte Vistas DEANNA BEMBRY, who corralled
a game-high 17 rebounds and 3 blocks, was named
the GVL Most Valuable Player.
Mount Miguels DANIELLE MILLER had a double-double
of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the GVL. Grossmonts
CHLOE COOK pitched in 11 points and Valhalla s
DANIELLE WILSON collected 10 rebounds for the
GHL.
Probably the most entertaining part of the girls
segment was the 3-point shooting contest, which
took place at halftime. It turned into a shoot-out
between Santanas SAMMY WHITE and Grossmonts
Cook. After two rounds the duo were deadlocked,
which took the contest into sudden death overtime.
Both girls came up empty in the first two rounds
before White connected in the third OT to collect
the trophy.
The girls all-star duel between the best from the Grossmont
Valley League will take on the top seniors from the
Grossmont Hills League at 5 p.m. The boys battle between
the two leagues will tip off at 7 p.m.
Both genders will compete in three-point shooting contests
at halftime of each game.
This years double-header will feature All-SDCIF
Breitbard Girls Player of the Year DANIELLE MILLER of
Mount Miguel and All-East County Boys Player of the
Year GARRETT LARCH-MILLER of Granite Hills.
The UNLV-bound Miller averaged an East County-leading
22.4 points and 5.4 steals per game, while Larch-Miller,
the Eagles 6-foot-2 wing man, banged in an East
County-best average of 25.3 points, grabbed 8.4 rebounds
and dished 3.6 assists per outing.
Coaches in this year for the boys are Granite Hills
RANDY ANDERSON in the GHL and Mount Miguel assistant
coach MARCELLUS JONES the best dressed mentor
courtside for the GVL in the boys game.
The girls game coaches are Valhallas AL SILVA
(GHL) and El Capitan assistant JEFF BICKFORD (GVL).
A year ago, Foothills Christians TROY LEAF, now
at UC Santa Barbara, scored a game record 38 points
in leading the Grossmont Hills to a 111-101 victory
over the GVL stars.
Like last year, this years game will feature
four 10-minute quarters for both genders. Leaf was the
2009-10 GHL all-stars MVP, while Monte Vistas
TONY JACKSON was picked the GVL MVP.
In last years girls duel, the Grossmont Valley
girls won 87-61. Mount Miguels DECHAE EVANS was
the GVL MVP, while Steele Canyons JANVIER BARBARIN
earned MVP for the GHL.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. Price
