LAKESIDE (6-11-15) — El Capitan’s junior pitcher-shortstop TRISTAN DUNCAN has committed to the University of Oregon. He will play for the Ducks following his senior season in 2017.
Duncan played as a middle infielder a large portion of the time for the Grossmont Valley League champion Vaqueros. He was selected to the 2015 All-East County first team as a right handed pitcher and the GVL second team.
Duncan turned in a 6-3 pitching record with 71 strikeouts in 12 games to go along with an ERA of 2.45 in 65.2 innings.

EL CAJON (6-7-15) — Competition in the East County this season was almost too close to measure.
Not that the local teams dominated anything in particular, as no team from the Inland Empire reached the semifinals except for Christian, which went on to take the San Diego Section Division III championship with a 29-2 record.
Undefeated in the Central League, the Patriots hit .414 (53-for-128) as a team in the playoffs.
Chistian’s MIKE MITCHELL was tabbed Coach of the Year.
The list of post-season awards were widespread after that. Helix pitcher-corner infielder LEE MUTTER was tabbed the EastCountySports.com Player of the Year, and Grossmont sophomore JACKSON HULETT was anointed Rookie of the Year.
Granite Hills pitcher KENNY LA PIERRE was named the Most Improved Player in balloting by the EastCountySports.com staff.
Christian outfielder JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD, who finished on a blazing hitting streak, came out of the shadows to earn Unsung Hero honors.

Fourth title in 2015 the sweetest for the Patriots

ALCALA PARK (6-6-15) — Christian wasn’t short of dramatics in Friday’s (June 5) San Diego Section Division III championship game at USD’s Fowler Park against Del Norte.
Fact is, the Patriots scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to squeeze out a 5-4 victory over the Nighthawks and take the crown. Christian earned its third section title in six years.
In their latest conquest, which hoisted their school record to 29-2, the Patriots overcame a 2-run deficit in the final frame as KYLE STOWERS hit a game-winning sacrifice fly to shower his teammates with CIF championship passes all around.
It wasn’t as easy as it sounds, though. Del Norte scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th, leaving Christian on the brink of defeat.
BRYCE JURRIES blanked the Nighthawks on 2 hits over the first five innings before caving in in the 6th.
But the Nighthawks came storming back, doing all of their scoring in the final two frames with an upset in mind.
After Del Norte wrestled the lead away from Christian with 3 tallies in the final frame, Christian made a last ditch comeback.
There was little time for Christian to hang their head, however, as No. 9 hitter NATE CAZARES blasted a leadoff home run over the 385-foot right field fence to tie it up.
Obviously stunned by the leadoff homer, the Nighthawks’ Parker Lappin then followed by hitting TREVOR HOWELL, which put the potential winning run on base. ZACH HOGUEISSON singled and Lappin hit another batter, WILL HAIL, to load the bases. Stowers stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Howell to cruise home with the game winner, emptying the bench in a dogpile.
It was the third run that Howell scored in the game.
“I wanted to win this one for the seniors,” said Stowers, who delivered his 4th game winning RBI. “We’re a team that’s really worked on game situation hitting, and we came up big this time. They threw me a fastball up and in, and I was ready to jump on it.”
The last time the Patriots won a CIF title was in 1997.
“That was a really good team,” Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL said. “Several members of that team came to the game today.”
Which team was better?
“This is probably the best team I’ve ever had,” the coach replied.

EL CAJON (6-3-15) — The Christian High Patriots mauled Mater Dei Catholic 16-6 in Tuesday’s (June 2) semifinals to qualify for the San Diego Section CIF Division III finals at USD’s Fowler Field on Friday (June 6) at 3:30.
Christian will be shooting for its third section title in six years if successful against the winner of Falbrook-Del Norte in Wednesday’s (June 3) semifinal.
“I don’t see it, but people criticize our 28-2 record, claiming that we don’t play a tough schedule,” noted Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “We don’t choose who we play. It’s our job to beat whoever is on our schedule.”
Mitchell pointed out that his Patriots are 2-1 against the Top 4 seeds in Division III.
Even more impressive is the Patriots defeated Eastlake in the Aztec-Foothiller final, captured the City Conference Tournament crown and the Disney Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
The Patriots, ranked No. 3 in the county, ripped off 17 hits as they defeated Mater Dei for the third time this season. They wiped out a 3-0 deficit with an 11-run spread in the 3rd inning. Fourteen Patriots came to bat in that pivotal frame.
Leadoff man TREVOR HOWELL, a four-year starter, was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
“When we go on the field we expect to win,” said Howell, who has a scholarship to Utah Valley University of the Western Athletic Conference.
Christian established a school record with a 28-2 mark, breaking a 26-2-1 finish in 1997.
“We knew we had a good ballclub, going in,” said the Patriots’ CHRISTIAN MEZA, a four-year starter for the team. “It’s just been a matter of earning respect.” Meza, a middle infielder, went 2-for-3 with 2 hits, including a double and 2 RBI.
Howell, perhaps the most versatile player on the Patriots’ roster, stakes his talent as a shortstop. He played shortstop, catcher and pitcher against the Crusaders.
“I can’t think of a better way of finishing my high school career,” Howell said. “I’ve grown up catching – love the position because I’m involved in every play. But I don’t mind playing the other positions either. Whatever it takes for us to win, that’s what I want to do.”
Sophomore ZACH HOGUEISSON whacked a 2-run homer to cap the 11-run 3rd inning as the Patriots turned the game into a blowout.
Designated hitter NATE CAZARES was 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Centerfielder KYLE STOWERS chipped with a pair of doubles and 2 runs scored.
Probably the clutch hit of the game was a 2-run single to center by BRYCE JURRIES that broke a 3-3 tie.

EL CAJON (5-31-15) — The Christian High Patriots, the top seeded team in the San Diego CIF Division III playoffs, is the lone East County team still active in post-season play.
The 3rd ranked Patriots (27-2) will host Mater Dei Catholic in Tuesday’s (June 2) semifinal at 3:30. If the Patriots conquer the Crusaders for the second time in tournament play, they will advance to the finals on Friday (June 5) at USD’s Fowler Park at 3:30. If the Patriots stumble on Tuesday, they will face Mater Dei again at 3:30 on Wednesday (June 3) in a home game.
On Saturday (May 30) St. Augustine eliminated Granite Hills in the Open Division 2-1 in nine innings, and Point Loma knocked out El Capitan 5-3 in the Division II quarterfinals.
ST. AUGUSTINE 2, GRANITE HILLS 1 – It’s somewhat amazing that the Granite Hills Eagles failed to find a way to sideline St. Augustine in Saturday’s (May 30) Open Division San Diego CIF quarterfinal.
Consider the facts: The Eagles out-hit the Saints 10-4 in nine innings. Granite Hills left 10 runners on base and the Saints left 2.
Bottom line is St. Augustine made the most of its 4 hits, and Granite Hills did not.
The Saints (23-10) won the game in the 9th inning when Dante Gutierrez slashed a two-out solo homer.
That blow spoiled the complete game pitching of the Eagles’ ANDREW BROWN, who walked none and struck out 8.
JORDAN VERDON was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the 5th inning. The Eagles, however, wasted a double by SEAN ROSS and a triple by DANIEL VASQUEZ.
Verdon hoisted a sacrifice fly in 5th inning to tie the game 1-1.
It was a typical Granite Hills game this season where the Eagles missed numerous scoring opportunities, despite out-hitting the majority of their opponents.
The Saints’ Sean Coyne was tagged for 10 hits but refused to buckle except in the bottom of the 5th.
Granite Hills finished with a disappointing 17-12 record.
POINT LOMA 5, EL CAPITAN 3 — The Vaqueros, who live by the comeback, couldn’t hit the gas pedal until the final frame in Saturday’s (May 30) San Diego CIF quarterfinal.
They edged Point Loma 4-1 in the first round of the Division II playoffs, but couldn’t repeat the effort in the quarterfinal elimination game against the Pointers.
Trailing 5-0 in the 7th frame, the Vaqueros (23-9) challenged the Pointers (18-13) as DALTON JENNINGS walked and advanced to second on a bunt single by SAM MELERO. With two outs MYLES EMMERSON notched an infield single to load the bases.
JASON MOORMAN, who was 3-for-4 in the game, then slashed a 2-run single. VICTOR CARLINO was hit by a pitch to force in a third run. But that’s as far as the Vaqueros would go as they left the bases stranded as the game ended.
Pinch-hitter KEN OHLHAUSER had a triple in the 7th inning in the comeback bid.
Vaqueros pitchers CHANCE COLSON, JORDAN FRANTZ and SEAN DUNNE allowed 8 hits and 4 earned runs. They struck out only 3 but didn’t walk a batter.
“It was an amazing season for us,” said Vaqueros head coach CLAYTON CURO. “We won 11 straight to gain a share of the (Grossmont Valley) League championship, and 12 straight, considering we got our first post-season playoff game in three years.”
Fifteen seniors will return to the El Capitan team next year so the prospects are golden.
“I’m excited for next year but I really would like to thank the coaching staff that I had this year,” Curo added.
Curo added a special acknowledgement to former El Capitan and now Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO.
“I want to thank him for getting me into this position,” Curo said. “I’m happy to be where I am and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jordan.”

Patriots say "Walk the plank, Matie!"
By Bill Dickens

EL CAJON (5-30-15) — Throughout the season coach MIKE MITCHELL’s Christian High Patriots have been criticized for being over-ranked, despite their 27-2 record, which is the best record in the county.
But the Patriots – the top-seeded team in Division III of the San Diego Section playoffs – continue to raise eyebrows as they defeated Oceanside 6-3 on Friday (May 29) in the second round of the San Diego CIF playoffs.
The Patriots had to scramble in forcing the Pirates to walk the plank.
Christian leadoff hitter TREVOR HOWELL was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
ZACH HOGUEISSON had two hits, as did KYLE STOWERS and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD.
The hit parade continued with CHASE WEHSENER, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI and BRYCE JURRIES, who delivered the biggest punch going 2-for-2 with 3 RBI.
But NATHAN JARVIS put the strong arm on the Pirates, surrendering only 2 hits and no earned runs as he hoisted his record to 7-0.
JOHN GERSHOW toiled the final two innings for Christian to pick up the save.
Christian, on Tuesday (June 2) will host the winner of the 11 a.m. Oceanside-Mater Dei Catholic game Saturday (May 30). The game on Tuesday will be at 3:30 on the Patriots diamond.
LA COSTA CANYON 3, GRANITE HILLS 1 — Rubbing elbows with the big boys in the Open Division of the San Diego CIF, Granite Hills came up short against host La Costa Canyon in Friday’s (May 29) second round, forcing the Eagles to tumble into the consolation bracket.
Granite Hills, champions of the Grossmont Hills League, put on an anemic offensive effort against the Mavericks, and now stand one loss away from the end of its season.
Granite Hills will host St. Augustine (22-10) on Saturday (May 30) at 11 a.m. on the Eagles diamond in an elimination game.
JORDAN VERDON hit a 7th inning home run to keep the Eagles from suffering a shutout at the hands of the top-seeded Mavericks (25-6). Other than that, however, they struggled to put together any kind of rally.
SAN YSIDRO 6, EL CAPITAN 5 — The visiting El Capitan Vaqueros (23-8) missed a chance to knock off second seeded San Ysidro in Friday’s (May 29) San Diego CIF Division II playoff quarterfinal.
Fact is, the Vaqueros carried a 5-4 lead into the 6th inning. And that’s when they slipped on the soap.
The Cougars (29-3) tied the game in the 6th and put away the victory on a bases loaded bloop single to left centerfield by Herman Alvarado with two outs in the bottom of the 7th, propelling San Ysidro into Tuesday’s (June 2) semifinal at 3:30.
San Ysidro will play the winner of the El Capitan-Point Loma game, which will be played at 11 a.m. on Saturday (May 30) Lakeside. If the Vaqueros come up short, their season will end.
In the loss to San Ysidro MYLES EMMERSON drove in 3 runs with a double, and JASON MOORMAN clubbed a 2-run homer to keep El Capitan in the game.
The Vaqueros’ pitching was sub-par as they were unable to maintain a lead down the stretch, and thus must defeat Point Loma on Saturday (May 30) to keep their post-season hopes alive.
POWAY 8, HELIX 5 – The youthful Highlanders were eliminated from post-season play by Poway (19-13) in Friday’s (May 29) second round of the San Diego Section Division II playoffs.
“It was a sad day for us,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “We have battled throughout the season. I’m disappointed but at the same time very proud of our baseball team.”
The Titans used a pair of home runs from Tyler Nevin and Kevin Bristow to help eliminate Helix from tournament play.
Sophomore left-fielder CONNER KONISHI was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the losing cause for Helix.
Leadoff Matthew Richardson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Helix, which ended the season (18-11).
The future is nothing but glowing for the Highlanders, however, as the Helix junior varsity, coached by DENNIS CONYER, finished the season 29-0.
“That’s a pretty good record, no matter what record you’re playing at,” said Holland. “We’re pretty excited about our future.”

Defense the key to El Capitan's First Round victory
By Bill Dickens

LAKESIDE (5-28-15) — A trio of defensive gems by El Capitan helped the Vaqueros support the 5-hit pitching by TRISTAN DUNCAN as El Capitan defeated former Major League pitcher-coach David Wells and his Point Loma Pointers 4-1 in Wednesday’s (May 27) first round of the San Diego Section Division II playoffs.
First year coach CLAYTON CURO acknowledged that defense was the key to the victory for his Vaqueros (23-7), which gave El Capitan its 12th straight win.
“Our defense was magnificent,” said Curo. “Three of our defensive gems were standout plays.
Left fielder DAWSON McCLANAHAN made a diving catch down the left field line that probably took away two runs. He laid out on the play and stunned the crowd.
“That was quite a catch,” Curo noted.
Another defensive standout was turned in by the first baseman, JASON MOORMAN, who dove to his left side to take away a double.
The Golden Glove effort was turned in by second baseman VICTOR CARLINO, which, if he were a Major Leaguer would have made the ESPN highlight reel.
“It was a three-hopper up the middle,” Curo recalled. “Carlino gloved it behind second base. He went to the right cut in the grass – all the way it looked like it was going to be a base hit. He got his glove on the ball and turned around and threw off balance to first base to hit Moorman in the glove.”
Curo noted that his players were in awe, probably because this was a Derek Jeter type glove-and-throw kind of play.
Carlino made the throw as he was falling away to the left field side, but still made an on the fly throw to first base.
The Vaqueros scored three runs in the first two innings.
MYLES EMMERSON was 2-for-2 with his 3rd home run of the year and an RBI double to ignite the Vaqueros offense.
SAM MELERO slugged a triple and drove in a run in the 2nd inning.
GRANITE HILLS 12, VISTA 3 — Granite Hills scored a season high 12 runs as they vanquished visiting Vista in Wednesday’s (May 27) San Diego CIF Open Division first round playoff action.
For the Eagles this was an offensive scoring spree that featured 14 hits as Granite Hills scored in all but one inning.
It was a series of hat tricks for the Eagles as ANDY LOWRY, ROBBIE AGERBEEK and ANDREW BROWN punched out 3 hits apiece to the Eagles 14-hit assault.
“I knew we were capable of being a good hitting ballclub but it’s taken until late in the season to prove it,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS.
Granite Hills took a 7-0 lead in the first two innings.
“I knew we could hit like this,” said Lowry, who is headed for the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI.
He had plenty of company as DANIEL VASQUEZ was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
ANDREW BROWN was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 2 runs scored in the 14-hit attack.
Granite Hills will advance to face top seeded La Costa Canyon in Friday’s (May 29) second round of double elimination play.
CHRISTIAN 9, MATER DEI CATHOLIC 4 — The top-seeded Christian High Patriots mowed down the visiting Mater Dei Crusaders in Wednesday’s (May 27) San Diego CIF Division III first round play.
The Patriots (26-2) pounded out 14 hits to support the complete game pitching of BRYCE JURRIES (7-0).
There wasn’t a whole lot of suspense involved in this one as the Patriots took a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. KYLE STOWERS, who later hit his 6th home run of the season, singled in TREVOR HOWELL with a base hit that ricocheted off the starting pitcher.
Stowers was 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI.
JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD continued his torrid hitting over the last eight games with a 2-for-4 effort. During that span he batted .667 (16-for-24) with 13 RBI. He drove in one of the Patriots’ runs against Mater Dei.
Christian will host No. 5 seeded Oceanside (7-12) on Friday (May 29) at 3:30.
Christian turned the game into a blowout in the 6th inning as WILL HAIL singled and Stowers hit his 6th home run to extend the Patriots to 5 runs.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 8, HELIX 1 — The Helix Highlanders got hammered by La Jolla Country Day in Wednesday’s (May 27) San Diego CIF Division I playoffs.
“This was definitely LJCD’s most complete game of the year,” said Torrey’s coach John Edman.
Alfonso Rivas threw a complete game 5 hitter at the Highlanders, striking out 7 and walking only one.
Helix avoided the shutout with a run in the final frame. LEE MUTTER was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a walk to DaSHAWN KEIRSEY. HUNTER ISBELL then doubled to left to score Mutter with the only Helix run.
SAN DIEGO 12, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 3 — Foothills Christian stumbled in a lop-sided first round bout with San Diego in the section Division IV playoffs on Wednesday (May 27).

Konishi breaks play-in game open with a two run double
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (5-27-15) — The No. 7 seeded Helix Highlanders (18-6) took a 2-1 lead in the 1st inning of Tuesday’s (May 26) SDCIF Division I play-in game against Santa Fe Christian, finishing with a 6-2 victory.
The Highlanders broke the game open in the 4th inning with 4 runs, extending their lead to 6-1. With two outs STEVEN ALBA and MATTHEW RICHARDSON both walked. CONNER KONISHI doubled to left, scoring Alba. JACK STRONACH was intentionally walked and LEE MUTTER was hit a pitch, scoring Richardson. DaSHAWN KEIRSEY hit a line drive double to right, scoring both Konishi and Stronach.
Keirsey scattered 7 hits over seven innings while striking out 8. The effort raised his record to 5-3.
The Highlanders advance to Wednesday’s (May 27) first round of the double elimination tournament at La Jolla Country Day at 3:30 p.m.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 6, HOLTVILLE 5 (10 inn.) — The Foothills Christian Knights pitchers KONNER VON DER LIETH and BAILEY LINK combined for a 4-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run over a 10-inning spread, and struck out 10 between the two of them in Tuesday’s (May 26) SDCIF Division IV play-in contest.
With the bases loaded and two out, Holtville tried the “hidden ball trick” at second base in the bottom of the 10th. It might have worked except the Vikings pitcher Octavio Loya was on the mound and was called for a balk. Game over as the Knights’ winning run came in.
DANIEL LUCKETT slammed his 6th home run with a runner on base in the 3rd inning to give Foothills Christian a 5-3 lead.
Foothills Christian took the lead 3-0 in the 2nd inning on a single by TREVOR SMALLWOOD and a 2-run single by RYAN QUINN.
CARLSBAD 4, VALHALLA 2 — In reality the Norsemen booted themselves out of Tuesday’s (May 26) SDCIF Division I play-in game against visiting Carlsbad at Eric Turgeon Field.
Photos from this game are available on the PHOTOS page |
Valhalla failed to capitalize on five hit batters by the Lancers’ pitchers, Ethan Emery and Justin O’Leary.
Valhalla left 9 runners on base – 5 of them in scoring position. Three Valhalla errors also led to 2 unearned runs and spelled doom for the Norsemen who finished the season 12-14-1.
The Norsemen’s pitching was respectable and good enough to win most games. Junior southpaw BROCK MOSIER scattered 8 hits and allowed only 2 earned runs in a five inning stint. The county’s most underrated reliever GARRETT YOCOM pitched two shutout innings and struck out one.
UNIVERSITY CITY 4, SANTANA 1 — The host Santana Sultans committed three back-breaking errors in Tuesday’s (May 26) SDCIF Division II play-in round loss to the Centurions of University City. The loss eliminated the Grossmont Valley League co-champions who finished the season 16-11.
Santana fell behind 4-0 in the 3rd inning but bounced back to score its only tally in the same frame. JACOB ODENKIRK walked but was forced out on a ground ball by REECE HERNANDEZ. Hernandez advanced to second on a wild pitch by UC pitcher Ken Waldichuk and scored on a base hit by TRISTEN SALINAS.
The hardluck loser on the mound for Santana was DAULTON BARRY, who surrendered 2 earned runs in five innings. Reliever COLTON CALVERT pitched two innings of shutout relief in the Sultans’ finale.
Santana finished the season 16-11. The bright spot for the Sultans, however, is they had no seniors and the whole ballclub returns.
POWAY 2, GROSSMONT 1 — The visiting Foothillers’ offense stalled in Tuesday’s (May 26) SDCIF Division I play-in game that eliminated Grossmont and sent Poway into Wednesday’s (May 27) double elimination tournament.
Grossmont (17-15) took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning as RYAN BARNES singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to center by JONAS BUCHANAN.
Grossmont missed two other scoring chances, leaving a potential run at third base with less than two outs in the 2nd and 5th innings.
CALVIN FARRIS (5-4) had another strong pitching outing in five innings plus, surrendering 6 hits, one earned run, walked 2 and struck out 5.
MICHAEL BYERLINE pitched one shutout inning of relief, allowing only one hit.
Although the Foothillers were eliminated from the post-season, they return the majority of this year’s team.
“This was a tough loss but the future is bright at Grossmont,” said Foothillers coach JORDAN ABRUZZO. “I’m happy to be a part of that
