EL CAJON (8-21-14) — Two Grossmont Conference baseball coaches have been named to new positions heading into the 2015 season.

JORDAN ABRUZZO, who spent the last two campaigns at El Capitan, moves over to Grossmont High, taking over for CHAD WILLIAMS who has moved to the East Coast.

Meanwhile, Mount Miguel’s new skipper is L.B. HAVIRD, who will take the Matadors’ reins this season. He steps in for JASON BABINEAU who guided the Matadors to a school record for 20 wins in 33 games.

Abruzzo, an El Capitan graduate, revitalized an El Capitan team with a 16-13 finish that included a berth in the playoffs.

“We’re excited to have Jordan on our staff,” said Grossmont High Athletic Vice Principal DONNIE CARROLL. “Jordan comes to us with many positive recommendations from people like STEVE VICKERY, MARK NOBLE and JAMES DAVIS.”

Jordan was an assistant coach for Vickery and Davis.

Havird, a teacher, has been an assistant coach in both football and baseball at Mount Miguel along with Babineau, who is now an Athletic Vice Principal at El CajonValley.

Another El Cap alum takes over the Vaqueros

LAKESIDE (8-2-14) — The family tradition continues in the El Capitan High baseball program.

The Vaqueros have named CLAYTON CURO as the new varsity baseball coach, replacing JORDAN ABRUZZO, who resigned for personal reasons after two seasons.

“I’m really excited and honored to have this chance,” said Curo, who played for legendary Vaqueros coach STEVE VICKERY in 1990-91.

Vickery will be one of Curo’s assistant coaches.

Curo has spent the last two years coaching the freshmen and junior varsity baseball teams at El Capitan. Currently his sons – senior place-kicker TAKOTA and sophomore wide receiver DELSON, are in the Vaqueros football program. The two boys also play soccer and golf.

“I want to involve the community more in the baseball program, like it was when I played,” said Curo, who celebrated his 41st birthday on Saturday (Aug. 2). “I’m glad to be back where I played. Now it’s my chance to see if I can get the program where I think it should be.”

When asked how many Curos have been involved in El Capitan sports, Curo paused and said, “They didn’t even ask me that question when I applied for the job. My dad was the first one, in 1961. I know it’s been more than a 100 since then, including my daughter, CHEYNOA, who was a cheerleader and who is now a freshman at Sonoma State .”

Curo is coaching summer baseball at El Capitan for the San Diego Scorpions Black.

“Our varsity lost only three kids from last year’s team,” said Curo of the Vaqueros who finished 16-13 overall, and made the playoffs. “My philosophy in coaching is to get kids to relax and be confident and motivated to enjoy the game.”

Valhalla hires former SDCC coach as skipper

EL CAJON (7-11-14) — Valhalla High has hired former minor league catcher MIKE BANDO for the Norsemen’s varsity baseball coaching position. The former catcher has been an assistant coach at San Diego Christian College with his father, Chris Bando.

“We are excited to have Mike on board,” said Valhalla athletic director ROBERT WILSON. “He is a man of good character, with a strong baseball background. Mike has a good understanding of what it takes to be a Student Athlete. He has an expectation that his players will be good role models on and off the field.”

Bando is a 2011 graduate of SDCC where he played two seasons for the Hawks.

During his senior year of high school, Bando batted .419 for Higley High school, helping the team advance to the 2nd round of playoffs in 2007.

In 2008, Bando attended Chandler-Gilbert CC and redshirted. Following that redshirt year, Bando went on to play for The Master's College for 2 seasons and transferred to SDCC for his final two seasons. Bando was named MVP of the 2009 Arizona W.B.L.

In 2011, Bando signed a contract with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League, the top independent baseball league in the United States, before being traded to the River City Rascals in the winter of 2012.

TORRANCE (6-19-14) — Granite Hills High head baseball coach JAMES DAVIS will be named the California State Coach of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports on Friday (June 20).

Davis also was named the CIF San Diego Section coach of the year after guiding the Eagles to the first-ever CIFSDS Open Division championship.

Davis' career mark in 14 seasons is 286-146-2, averaging more than 20 victories per year.

A very professional and efficient leader of young men, Davis always has his teams in contention for San Diego Section and Grossmont Hills League championships.

He has sent dozens of players onto the next level. He's one of the most respected coaches in San Diego County for his knowledge and leadership.

Davis is the second East County coach to receive state honors on two fronts.

Former El Capitan mentor STEVE VICKERY won state honors for baseball in 2012, giving the region two honorees in three seasons. Grossmont's ROB PHILLIPS also captured the award in 2008.

Davis was also the second winner from East County this school year, joining Christian High head football coach MATT OLIVER, who captured Cal-Hi Sports laurels in the small schools division.

Hometown hero steps down at El Cap

LAKESIDE (6-22-14) — After two seasons at the helm of the El Capitan Vaqueros, baseball coach JORDAN ABRUZZO has stepped down from his post.

“I have resigned from El Capitan to focus more on my career and my family,” said Abruzzo, who compiled a 27-30 record in guiding the Vaqueros.

His teams did particularly well in the Grossmont Valley League, capturing the 2013 championship while compiling a 17-7 two year league record.

“I’m very proud of what we accomplished in my two years,” Abruzzo said. “It was a special experience to come back and be a part of such a great program. I wish them nothing but the best in the future.”

A 2003 graduate of El Capitan, Abruzzo – a catcher – batted a combined .444 (99 for 223). During his final two seasons in a Vaqueros uniform he belted 15 home runs and logged 89 RBI.

Abruzzo was a four-year starter at the University of San Diego, where he still holds several baseball records. He went on to play 3½ years in the New York Mets farm system.

Finding a replacement for Abruzzo will be no easy task. He followed the legendary STEVE VICKERY into the dugout and has now left a vacancy to be filled.

Those interested in the position should contact Joey Cota by EMAIL.

Valhalla’s Wilson
resigns baseball post

By Bill Dickens

EL CAJON (6-21-14) — MIKE WILSON has stepped down after five successful seasons as Valhalla High’s baseball coach.

“I feel like everything I did was for the program,” said Wilson, who compiled an 89-84-1 overall record. His teams finished 16-10 in the San Diego CIF playoffs, reaching the semifinals all five years. They reached the SDCIF Division I finals against Grossmont this season but came up short, 6-4.

“My record is what it is,” Wilson said. “I feel like my relationships with the players and the administration were very positive.

“I love coaching baseball and I hope that I am able to coach it in the future.”

Wilson’s teams averaged 18 wins a season in the Grossmont Hills League, in the most competitive conference in the San Diego Section. His teams won as many as 22 games.

“I didn’t quit,” Wilson said. “It was a mutual decision, which makes it more disappointing for me to step down.”

Valhalla athletic director Robert Wilson (no relation) said, “Mike resigned last Friday (June 13). We will miss his passion for the game and his desire to help kids get to the next level. His teams experienced great success.”

This year JORDAN QSAR received a baseball scholarship to Pepperdine. CHRIS HUDGINS signed with Cal State Fullerton. MITCH COOMBS will attend Sonoma State on scholarship and JEFF HOUGHTBY is in the process of choosing between USD, UCR, Nevada and St. Mary’s.

Finding a replacement for Mike Wilson will be quite the challenge for A.D. Wilson.

“We have not hired a replacement. Interested applicants can EMAIL their resume to me.”

Promotion leads Babineau
into athletics management

By Bill Dickens

SPRING VALLEY (6-20-14) — JASON BABINEAU resurrected the slumping Mount Miguel High baseball team during his three seasons at the Matadors helm. His squads combined for a record of 46-44-2, including a school-record of 20 wins in 2014.

Babineau has stepped down from the Mount Miguel coaching job to accept a position as Vice Principal of Athletics at El Cajon Valley, effective immediately.

“Becoming the Vice Principal of athletics at El Cajon Valley is a job that needs my full commitment, energy, and time,” said Babineau. “Balancing both is not fair to my players, nor the staff and students at El Cajon Valley.”

Prior to Babineau’s arrival at Mount Miguel, the Matadors were a forgettable 80-200 (from 2001-2011). During his tenure guiding the Spring Valley nine, the Matadors made the San Diego Section playoffs all three seasons for the first time for three years in a row.

In 2012, Babineau was named East County Sports.com Coach of the Year. This past season's victory total of 20 was the school's highest since 1980 (15-5), when the school captured its last league title.

“Coaching these young men has been the most rewarding experience of my life,” he said. “I came in with boys who just wanted to play, and left with young men who expected to win.”

Babineau has mixed emotions about leaving the Mount Miguel baseball team.

“The foundation has been laid,” he said. “We have top-notch starters returning and had an outstanding group of freshmen who will be ready to fill in the gaps. Whoever takes over will be gifted with a large group of high character men who will work their tail off to get better.

“I sincerely appreciate the support of the parents, the hard work of my coaches, and most of all, the commitment of each of my players, as they truly dedicated themselves to bringing pride back to Matador Baseball.

EL CAJON (6-17-14) — East County Sports' two-time Baseball Coach of the Year, CHAD WILLIAMS, has resigned his post at Grossmont High after two seasons.

He is moving with his fiancé to New Jersey later this summer, closer to her family.

Williams, 30, guided the Foothillers to a 45-22 record, the 2013 Grossmont Hills League title and San Diego Section CIF Division I crowns for the past two seasons.

“We’ve had a lot of talent go through Grossmont, and my two years here was no exception,” Williams said. “The community pride like they have at Grossmont is something I’ve never been associated with before.”

Prior to joining the Foothillers’ staff Williams coached the Monte Vista Monarchs from 2010 to 2012. He was an assistant at Granite Hills under San Diego CIF Coach of the Year JAMES DAVIS from 2007 to 2009.

As a middle infielder during his playing days, Williams graduated from Granite Hills in 2002. He went on to San Diego State and played for the late Tony Gwynn from 2003 to 2004 before transferring to Chico State for his final two collegiate seasons.

Williams has coached with his father MIKE WILLIAMS the past two years at Grossmont.

“I’ll miss being around my dad,” said Williams. “He’s a great inspiration and a lot of help. I’ve learned a lot from him."

EL CAJON (6-9-14) — Granite Hills High pitcher-outfielder JAYSON ROSE and Valhalla’s CHRIS HUDGINS shared East County Co-Players of the Year honors.

Rose’s strength was as a pitcher as the senior right-hander posted an 8-0 record and an ERA of 1.07. The Utah-bound Rose struck out 103 in 85 innings. When he wasn’t pitching he played center field and batted .346 with 3 home runs and 27 RBI.

Hudgins, who has a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton in hand and was the 35th round draft by the New York Yankees, batted .405 with 12 home runs and 40 RBI for the Norsemen.

East County Sports' Rookie of the Year honors went to Helix freshman CONNOR KONISHI. Christian High’s right-handed pitcher SAM GERSHOW was selected as Most Improved with a record of 9-2 and an ERA of .88.

East County Sports' Unsung Hero is Granite Hills’ stealthy catcher IZZY GOMEZ, who rarely got a chance to hit but caught every inning.

Grossmont High’s CHAD WILLIAMS earned East County Sports' Coach of the Year for the second season in a row after guiding the Foothillers to the San Diego Section Division I championship twice.

After a third place finish in the rugged Grossmont Hills League, the Foothillers finished 19-14 overall, including sweeping to five straight playoff wins. They defeated league rival Valhalla 6-4 in the Division I championship game. A year ago William’s Foothillers were 26-8 on their way to the Division I pennant.

Repeat All-East County picks included BRANDON WEED, BRAD MORENO, HUNTER STRATTON, CHRIS HUDGINS, JORGE GARCIA, TOMMY LOGAN, TANNER PERRY, DANIEL VASQUEZ, JEREMIAH WYLIE, DANIEL RONK, ROBERT BOSTEDT, ALAN STRONG and PEYTON LINDSAY and Rose.

LAKESIDE (6-12-14) — Former El Capitan High and Southwestern College pitcher, KEVIN GINKEL, has signed with the San Francisco Giants.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander was selected in the 16th round of last week’s free agent draft. He was assigned to Salem-Kaiser of the Northwest short-season league.

Ginkel, a freshman at Southwestern, was a first-team pick in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference and played a key role in the Jaguars’ drive to the Southern California semifinals.

As a senior at El Capitan he posted an 8-2 record and a 1.91 ERA for the Vaqueros.

East County 'twins' selected by Minnesota

NEW YORK (6-7-14) – The Minnesota Twins reached into East County to grab a pair of high selections, taking Steele Canyon High product MICHAEL CEDEROTH (San Diego State) and Helix High alum JAKE REED (Oregon) on Friday's (June 6) second day of the Major League Baseball Free Agent Draft.

Michael Cederoth
Jake Reed

Cederoth went in the third round as the 79th overall selection. A few minutes later, Reed was tabbed in the fifth round (No. 140 overall).

Reed, a junior closer, he was a Pac-12 Conference first team pick while compiling a 4-1 record with a 1.93 ERA and 13 saves. He led the Ducks in saves while finishing second in ERA and appearances (31). His 13 saves were the third most in school history, and his 31 appearances ranked 6th all-time.

Reed spent the first two years of his collegiate career as a starter and claimed freshman All-American honors in 2012. He ranked sixth all-time in wins at Oregon with 18, while also ranking among the school’s all-time leaders in innings pitched (5th), strikeouts (8th) and saves (2nd).

As a 6-foot-6 right-hander with a fastball that reaches triple digits, it’s hard to comprehend how Cederoth could struggle at any level. However, that unfortunately was the case last season, as the sophomore went 3-9 with a 4.25 ERA and 48 walks in 95.1 innings (15 starts).

As a junior, the flame-throwing right-hander seemingly found his niche this spring as San Diego State ’s closer, saving 20 games and posting a 2.28 ERA with 55 strikeouts and 28 walks over 51.1 innings (32 appearances).

While there likely will be some teams interested in developing him as a starter at the professional level, Cederoth’s overall lack of control and previous success as a closer has him destined for a long-term bullpen role in the major leagues.

That will be up to the Twins.

Norsemen catcher tabbed by Yankees

© East County Sports.com
NEW YORK (6-8-14) — Valhalla High catcher CHRIS HUDGINS was selected on the third day of the professional baseball free agent draft in the 35th round by the New York Yankees.

Hudgins was the 1,052nd pick overall and the only high school player chosen from East County.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Norseman has some decisions to make as he has also made a verbal commitment to Cal State Fullerton.

Hudgins led East County with 12 home runs and 40 RBI in helping the Norsemen reach the finals of the San Diego Section Division I championship.

He was an offensive powerhouse as he also scored 23 runs and pounded 8 doubles while finishing the season with a .405 batting average.

His average waned in the final month of the season due to the fact that his reputation preceded him – pitchers were not throwing him strikes. That caused him to put pressure on himself.

The Yankees obviously see a future for Hudgins. Whether they can ante up enough money to strike a deal is questionable as a Cal State Fullerton scholarship is worth a considerable amount.
