How did the Highlanders react? The team registered
touchdowns on their next three drives to take
charge and mount a 28-10 halftime lead, going
on to capture the CIF State Division II Championship
Bowl crown after whipping the Golden Eagles, 35-24,
at Home Depot Center.
It's the first state championship for Helix (13-1),
an accomplishment that even the school's last
CIF San Diego Section title team of REGGIE BUSH
and ALEX SMITH could not achieve.
This is what it is all about, said
senior receiver-corner CAMERON LEE. All
of our hard work paid off. Our theme for the year
is being in the moment and winning our last game.
This year's troops close the season riding an
impressive 13-game win streak.
Down 14-10 following Del Oro's initial TD, Helix
thought they took the lead on a 55-yard BRANDON
LEWIS pass to JIMMY PRUITT. But even after the
play was nullified by penalty, Lewis found tight
end GARY THOMPSON for 72 yards on the very next
play to quickly ignite the second-quarter landslide.
"We've been behind before... we knew what
we had to do," Lewis told CalHiSports.com.
"There was a lot of game left, even at halftime
when we had a pretty good lead, I told the guys
to think of it as 0-0 because there's a lot of
game left."
For the contest, Lewis (11-of-16) threw for 254
yards and three touchdowns. Indeed, nothing seemed
to bother Helix' run to the biggest trophy available
in California.
Hes so good at reading defenses,
Helix coach TROY STARR said. Great players
make big plays in big games, and he did.

On his bench was a tall and skinny inexperienced sophomore
who went by the nickname New Booty.
Coach (MAURY) COLE was the one who told me, Put
in New Booty. The kid has talent.
As Cole, the Highlanders running backs coach,
remembers it, I said put in New Booty because
he can sling it.
Sling it, he can all the way to a first-ever
state football championship for the Highlanders.
New Booty, known better and throughout San Diego County
as BRANDON LEWIS, the San Diego Section Offensive Player
of the Year, threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns
on 11-for-16 passing with no interceptions or sacks
as Helix defeated Loomis-Del Oro, 35-24, to win the
CIF State Championship Bowl for Division II on Saturday
(Dec. 17) night at Home Depot Center.
Right now Im just floating on air,
said Lewis, now a senior, still 6-foot tall and slender
at 180 pounds but much more experienced after leading
Helix to the section championship game twice
the Scotties lost to Oceanside 26-10 in 2009 and beat
Oceanside 44-6 on Dec. 5.
That sophomore group we started six sophomores
(in 2009) took Oceanside to the wire that year,
Starr said. We knew we had something special coming
in the years to follow.
Lewis started slowly against Del Oro (13-2), completing
only one of his first five passes. He went nuts after
that, completing 10 of his final 11 tosses.
Two of his completions went to KENDAL KEYS, both for
touchdowns of 32 and 7 yards. CAMERON LEE also had three
catches for 42 yards.
Three more passes went to tight end GARY THOMPSON for
117 yards, including a 72-yard TD strike on a first-and-27
play that immediately followed a holding call that negated
a would-have-been 55-yard TD pass to JIMMY PRUITT, who
finished with two catches for 35 yards.
We hit them with the clown post, and it got called
back, Starr said. Next play, Brandon just
made a great read. That was a home run all the way.
Lewis pass was perfect, hitting the streaking
Thompson in stride, and Thompson took it to the house
after defender Brandon Monroe slipped to the turf to
give Helix a 14-10 lead, and the Scotties (13-1) would
never trail again.
Our game plan was to try to spread em out.
Starr said. Get em in a 5-on-5 situation,
and it worked out pretty well.
After hoisting the state championship trophy
a wooden replica of the state of California Starr
was definitely feeling giddy.
It can never be taken away, he said. I
just love these guys. It feels surreal. We have great
players, tremendous group of kids. Its tremendous
for our kids.
Im going to sleep with that trophy.
Said senior center DARRIEN OLIVER, It feels really,
really good. Weve been working hard all year,
lifting weights, working out. This is a really nice
payoff.
And ERNEST SHIPLEY, who along with fellow senior linebacker
KACY SMITH, led the Highlanders with nine tackles: Our
defense stepped up every week huge, and tonight was
no different. We have one of the top front sevens in
San Diego County, and we came out with some big hits.
It feels great to be the first Helix team to
play for a state championship and win it all.
Helix also got seven tackles from ROCKY FUGA and five
solo tackles from LIPO NAPOLEAN, including two for losses.
Del Oros pair of 1,000-yard rushers, Brandon
Monroe (1,605 yards, 22 TDs) and Nick OSullivan
(1,342, 23), were held to a combined 82 yards.
Helix totaled 384 yards to 272 for Del Oro, the Sac-Joaquin
Section Division III champion, which like Helix was
making its first appearance in the six-year history
of the state bowl series.
The Highlanders DARRION HANCOCK, like Lewis a
three-year starter, rushed for 108 brutally tough yards
on 26 carries. Following an interception by ANTHONY
SPENCE at the Del Oro 29-yard line, Hancock scored the
first touchdown on a 7-yard run with 4:24 left in the
first quarter to give Helix a 7-3 lead. Perhaps more
importantly, he did not fumble, despite being hit by
two, three or four Golden Eagles on every attempt.
You wont find a tougher kid, Starr
said.
Added Cole, Hes such a beast. Nobody works
harder. Nobody puts in the effort he does. I love the
guy.
Quiet by nature, Hancock finally let loose with a satisfying
smile.
Me personally, Ive been playing football
since I was 7 years old, Hancock said. This
is the first year Ive won a championship, and
we won two the section and the state. This is
the best group of guys ever.
While admitting that he had not been hit as hard or
as often as he was against Del Oro, Hancock rightfully
praised his offensive linemen. That would be AUGIE LUGO,
DENNING CRENSHAW, AMU MILO, ARTHUR SHEPARD and Oliver
all of them seniors except Milo, a junior.
Said Oliver, We played pretty well in the trenches
against a really good team. It was a difficult task,
but we managed. Definitely the best team we faced this
year.
Del Oro opened the game with a pooch kick that Daniel
Thomas recovered for the Eagles. Five plays later, they
got a 36-yard field goal from Skylar Rand for a 3-0
lead.
After yielding a 10-7 deficit early in the second quarter,
Helix dominated the rest of the rest of the half. Thompsons
72-yarder made it 14-10. On their next series, MICHAEL
ADKINS scored on a 3-yard run between right guard and
tackle to make it 21-10. On their next series, starting
with 1:55 left in the second quarter, Lewis tossed to
Keys on a screen play, and Keys turned it into a 32-yard
touchdown to make it 28-10 with 1:11 to play.
Those three drives went 5 plays, 66 yards; 5 plays,
66 yards; and 3 plays, 67 yards.
Del Oro came out of the lockerroom and drove 93 yards
in 12 plays over 5:35 to pull within 28-17.
But Helix did them one better, taking its next possession
13 plays and 67 yards over 6:25, culminating in a 7-yard
TD pass from Lewis to Keys to make it 35-17 at the end
of the third quarter.
We broke down there a little bit (on Del Oros
drive), Starr said, but we came back with
one of our own. Thats what great teams do. Come
back under adversity.
Helix was fortunate that two calls went its way on
the drive. First, Lewis threw an apparent interception,
but the officials whistled Del Oro for holding the receiver
downfield. Secondly, the TD by Keys could have been
negated as the ball may have touched the ground while
Keys was trying to get control of it.
Asked whether the ball nipped the ground, Keys smiled,
No, I had it all the way.
With an 18-point lead, Starr played it close to the
vest in the fourth quarter before getting doused with
a bucket of Gatorade with about 40 seconds left in the
game.
Moments later, Del Oro blocked a punt in Helix territory,
and Alex Bertrando returned it 6 yards for a touchdown.
Del Oro then recovered an onside kick, but with only
30 seconds left, it proved to be too little, too late
for the Golden Eagles.
Del Oros only other loss this season was a 30-27
overtime setback against Westlake Village Westlake,
which was down 14-0 before getting trounced by Concord
De La Salle in the Open Division state final following
the Helix win. A 35-31 win over Nevada Union was the
previous high point total Del Oro had allowed before
running into a Helix team that won its final 13 games
after a 21-14 loss to Eastlake in the season opener.
With the blocked punt TD near the end, this, too, was
the high point total allowed for Helix, and the Highlanders
closest win. Its closest previous win was a 21-0 shutout
of Mission Hills in the section semifinals.
Thats the kind of dominance Starr envisioned
after watching Lewis and Co. play so well as sophomores.
Lewis finished his three-year run with a 26-3 record
as a starter. Plus, with a live fastball, he helped
the Scotties win a section championship in baseball
last spring, earning two playoff complete-game wins.
Starr, a former assistant at Florida under Urban Meyer,
believes Lewis can play major college football, but
Lewis may also be drafted in baseball.
As for Reed, the guy Lewis replaced three seasons ago,
hes at Oregon on a baseball scholarship.
And Lewis is on Cloud 9.

Various formulas compute a positive stand on each side
of the ball. But even that number crunching is misleading.
Statistically speaking, the Highlanders numbers
shout out excellence 562 points (43.2 ppg) on
offense and 99 points (7.6 ppg) on defense. Of course,
even those impressive marks are not indicative of how
powerful the San Diego CIF Division II champion Highlanders
(12-1) can be.
Thats because seven of Helixs games ended
with a running clock in the fourth quarter, including
a 44-6 romp over Oceanside in the CIF San Diego Section
final at Qualcomm Stadium.
Riding a 12-game winning streak after a season-opening
21-14 loss to Eastlake, the Highlanders will take on
the Golden Eagles of Loomis-Del Oro (13-1) on Saturday
(Dec. 17) at the Home Depot Center. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
In all my years of coaching high school football
Ive never been practicing past Dec. 13 in a season,
Helix coach TROY STARR said. Its kinda nice...
a little chilly, but kinda nice. Obviously, it is an
honor to still be wearing pads and having a chance to
win the big prize in our last game.
Helix has held 10 of its opponents to 7 points or fewer,
while posting three shutouts. In reality, though, Helixs
front line defense has permitted just three touchdowns
in the last 12 games.
Del Oro coach Casey Taylor, who was on hand to scout
the Highlanders title knockout of Oceanside, noted
the muscle Helix has in its defensive front line of
GARY THOMPSON, AMU MILO, LIPO NAPOLEON and ARTHUR SHEPARD.
That may be the best defensive line weve
seen, Taylor told the Sacramento Bee newspaper.
Add in linebackers KACY SMITH, ROCKY FUGA and ERNEST
SHIPLEY, corners JIMMY PRUITT and JALEN DAVIS, along
with safeties ROMELLO CARBUCCIA and KENDAL KEYS and
you have a Green and White stone wall.
Yet nobody is getting cocky in the Helix swarm.
Del Oro is the best team weve seen,
said Smith, the defensive player of the year for East
County Sports.com and the All-San Diego CIF unit. They
are going to be ready for us and we will be ready for
them.
The Northern California champions, who are situated
some 40 miles northeast of Sacramento, are a run-oriented
team, averaging 236 yards rushing per start. Junior
Brandon Monroe (234-1605, 26 TDs) and Nick OSullivan
(228-1342, 23 TDs) carry the mail for Del Oro (which
averages 40.4 points per game).
Love
for the Linemen
Highlander offensive lineman
Arthur Shepard (58). (Photo by Neal Williams, HelixAthletics.org)
They run a lot of stretch plays and off-tackle stuff,
Smith said.
Only a three-point loss to Westlake in Week Two has
denied the Golden Eagles from a perfect record. They
too have won their last 12.
We are an aggressive team and we know what is
at stake, Smith said. We are prepared to
go all out.
Quarterback BRANDON LEWIS (2,836 yards, 36 TDs), the
All-SDCIF Offensive Player of the Year, is the maestro
of the potent Highlanders offense. He has three receivers
with 25 catches or more CAMERON LEE (41 catches,
733 yards, 6 TDs); Keys (36-631, 8 TDs) and Pruitt (23-394,
8). DARRION HANCOCK (153-1207, 21 TDs) and MICHAEL ADKINS
(86-907, 11 TDs) anchor the Helix running game.
These teams have never met, but the guess here is...
Helix 27-14.
Playoff Patter: Tickets are $15 at the gate
the game can be seen on Cox Cable Channel 4.
The Highlanders (12-1) received 20 first-place
votes to beat out Poway (12-0-1) in the final
poll, conducted by the North County Times.
The Scotties concluded the regular season with
all 23 votes, but three people changed their vote,
even though Helix won the CIFSDS Division II crown
by ripping 7-time defending champion Oceanside,
which finished fifth overall behind Division III
winner Cathedral Catholic and Division IV champion
Valley Center.
Santana (11-2), which rested just outside the
Top 10 all season, lost the Division IV finale,
yet jumped to a season-best ninth place in the
final rankings, while Mount Miguel (8-2) finished
among the honorable mention.
Christian (10-3), which upset top-seeded Santa
Fe Christian in the Division V title game, failed
to receive a vote, along with Steele Canyon and
Valhalla (8-4 each).
Editor's note ECS.com is one of the
23 poll panel voters and is a member of the San
Diego Sportswriters/Sportscasters Association.
The Highlanders (12-1) were selected by the CIF bowl
committee to play in the game for Division II schools,
meeting the Del Oro (13-1) Golden Eagles of Loomis.
The contest will be held Sat., Dec. 17, at Home Depot
Center. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
Helix, the San Diego Section champion, was also the
top-ranked ballclub covering all schools in San Diego
and Imperial counties over the second half of the season.
The Scotties have won 12 straight contests since an
opening day loss, the streak capped by a 44-6 demolition
of 7-time defending champion Oceanside at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Highlanders were given the edge for the bowl berth
over CIF Southern Section-Central Division titlist Rancho
Verde of Moreno Valley.
The Mustangs (14-0) capped a perfect season by jumping
out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead in downing previously
unbeaten Palm Springs, 35-16. They captured every game
by at least two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Del Oro and Vacaville were both 13-1 among
Division II schools in Northern California.
However, Vacaville's lost to Marin Catholic, compared
to Del Oro's setback to powerful Open Division Bowl
participant Westlake of Westlake Village (both teams
have wins over Granite Bay), was deemed the difference.
In addition, Windsor went 14-0, but the Jaguars' schedule
failed to compare.
In anticipation of the bowl game, Del Oro coach Casey
Taylor scouted both the Helix-Oceanside and Rancho Verde-Palm
Springs section finals.
