WEEK FOURTEEN
CIF SAN DIEGO SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS – SEMIFINALS

DIVISION V
More than blimp lights the sky
Christian's fireworks result in 9 TDs; berth in CIF final

EL CAJON (12-3-11) — It seemed like just another shift for the night crew out at Gillespie Field until there were strange reactions on the radar that pointed directly at Valley Stadium.

The most logical consensus agreed to the assumption that it was most likely a computer error and nothing more, then there was the rest of the crowd that saw the truth.

Indeed the MetLife blimp hovered over the field at Granite Hills High to take in the San Diego CIF semifinal action between Christian and Francis Parker high schools with a ticket to the championship round on the line, but they weren’t prepared for the fireworks show that would ensue and put them in danger’s harm.

The Patriots offense lit the fuse early and often as they tallied a 9-6 victory over the Lancers to move into the rematch they had hoped for against Santa Fe Christian for the Division V crown.

The only problem was 9-6 wasn’t the actual score, it was the number of touchdowns each team produced as the shootout produced 105 points and nearly 1,000 yards of total offense between the two Coastal League rivals.

The Patriots would eventually emerge with the 63-42 victory Friday (Dec. 2), punching their ticket to the Division V championship game next Friday at Mesa College.

RAYVON OWENS set the tone early for Christian as he rushed 6 times for 53 yards on the opening drive and produced the first of many touchdowns on the night while giving the Patriots a 7-0 advantage.

Three plays later, PHILLIP GEORGE intercepted the Lancers' first pass attempt of the night and returned it 19 yards to the Parker 22-yard line.

“Our coaches did a great job preparing us this week and we had most of their plays read just by the formation they lined up in,” George, a junior corner, admitted. “I knew my guy was definitely running a slant so I jumped it and got the pick.”

Five plays later, senior quarterback SHANE DILLON hooked up with KYLE HARRIS for a 10-yard strike and a 14-0 Patriots advantage.

If anything has been a thorn in the side of this 2011 Patriots squad it would definitely have to be the special teams play.

In fact, it was the main factor their regular season matchup with Santa Fe resulted as a notch in the loss column.

“We’ve been practicing on our special teams a lot more lately,” George stated.

It definitely showed all night as MASON POWELL converted on all nine extra point kicks and after the Lancers cut the early 14-point Patriots lead in half, George took matters into his own hands… or did he?

Owens was all over the field the entire night. He rushed 24 times for 167 yards and five touchdowns and also made eight tackles on defense.

Once Parker made it a 14-7 score, George caught the ensuing kickoff at the 1-yard line and continued to hand the ball off to Owens on a reverse, except he decided to keep it.

Ninety-nine yards later, George was in the end zone to stake the Patriots to another 2 touchdown advantage.

It didn’t matter what Parker did after that point because they had no clue as to how to stop this Christian team from scoring. The Patriots only had two drives that didn’t result in touchdowns and one was because of the halftime horn.

Even offensive coordinator DAVID BEEZER kept his post game speech to a minimum. After being asked to talk to the team he just looked at all of them and then turned to the scoreboard and simply said, “63 points…that’s all I need to say. Good job tonight fellas!”

Dillon’s final numbers read 10-of-20 for 185 yards and 2 TD’s and KYLE HARRIS finished with 5 catches for 105 yards and a score.

Defensivelym TRENTON SAULS and JASON GAINES led the way as Sauls ended up with 10 tackles and 2 sacks and Gaines finished with 3 sacks for himself. He rushed off the edge and beat the defensive end as he then laid out the running back that was left to protect his QB at all costs. Turned out that extra protection acted as just about as good as a rag doll against Gaines.

“I knew if I didn’t go hard all night with me being a senior that it could have been my last game, so I just put it all on the line and worked my hardest,” Gaines said.

He also rushed for a 15-yard touchdown and hauled in 4 catches for 44 more yards and a 25-yard touchdown reception.

Sauls finished the game with 12 tackles which also included 2 sacks and another tackle that resulted in a loss.

Everyone is giddy about the opportunity to face off with the Eagles again.

“It’s gonna be a fun game and should be interesting,” Sauls said. “They’re a good team and there’s no denying that.”

   Pats offense rocks Parker
Will meet top-seeded Santa Fe Christian
in CIF Division V finale at Mesa College

EL CAJON (12-3-11) — The only thing stopping the rising offensive unit of Christian High School was the scoreboard clock.

Except for a drive ending when the time expired for halftime, the Patriots posted touchdowns on their first six drives of Friday's (Dec. 2) SDCIF Division V semifinals. And when you add a record-tying 99 yards on a kickoff runback by PHILIP GEORGE in the middle of the scoring surge, Christian easily earned a berth to next week's championship after out-slugging visiting Francis Parker, 63-42, at Valley Stadium.

The timing couldn't be more opportune.

For the first time in four seasons, Christian (9-3) advanced beyond the round-of-4 to gain a berth in the San Diego Section final, gaining a rematch with top-seeded Santa Fe Christian Friday (Dec. 9) at 7 p.m. at Mesa College 's Douglas Stadium.

"We practiced hard and kept the focus on what we're supposed to do," said Patriots receiver/linebacker JASON GAINES. "And we kept working hard throughout the entire game."

The tools to mount the Patriots' offensive machine reach far beyond the arm of Colorado bound quarterback SHANE DILLON. Aided by an offensive line which did not allow a sack all contest, several of the so-called "skilled" players were able to step into the spotlight.

Along with five rushing touchdowns from RAYVON OWENS, the Patriots saw impact performances by Gaines, TRENTON SAULS and KYLE HARRIS, The diverse cast may make defensive planning more difficult for Santa Fe Christian, which captured the teams' Coastal League meeting, 48-34, in Solana Beach on Oct. 29.

"The score was like a basketball game," noted head coach MATT OLIVER. "We're very happy with the effort on offense."

Gaines registered several strong receptions, including a 25-yard TD grab to start the second half and a 15-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. However, Gaines actually started the separation between the teams with a pair of second-quarter sacks.

George's touchdown came on a fake handoff, which saw a pair of Lancers follow the wrong ball carrier. Sauls then delivered the key block to send George sprinting all alone down the Patriots sideline.

Sauls was also among the tackling leaders, along with defensive end GRANT TODD.

Meanwhile, JAKE LARSEN collected his East County best sixth interception, returning the ball 20 yards to the Lancers-2 to set-up the final touchdown by Owens, who scored on romps of 10, 1, 3, 9 and 2 yards.

The five scores equals a school record last set by TYRONE SAULS in last season's 78-7 pasting of Tri-City Christian.

DIVISION IV
Sultans sink Coronado,
secure historic triumph

SANTEE (12-2-11) — If it wasn’t perfect, at least it was memorable.

The Sultans' 38-26 San Diego CIF Division IV semifinal victory over visiting Coronado will be one of those games Santana alumni will replay for decades to come.

Yet, the best is right around the corner as Santana has qualified to meet Valley Center for the Division IV crown at Qualcomm Stadium on Monday (Dec. 5) at 10 a.m.

Oh the excitement of the Santana faithful, who filled Santee Community Stadium to witness Sultans’ history.

“This is what it’s all about,” Santana’s DAVE GROSS said after capturing his 131st coaching victory. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, so yeah, it is a great feeling to be taking my team and coaching staff to the Q.”

Santana got burned by three lost fumbles. But it could have been worse if not for the JASON PATTERSON-led Sultans’ defense. Not only did Patterson pace the Sultans with 10 tackles – five for losses – he also recorded two sacks, raising his school record count to 17 ½.

When it comes to Santana the leading performer is almost always LANDON LOZOYA. In the knockout of Coronado it was no exception as Lozoya totaled 160 all-purpose yards, including 8 pass receptions for 84 yards and a 28-yard scoring strike from quarterback KYLE GASNER.

In addition Lozoya also rushed for 76 yards on six carries and, most importantly delivered a 48-yard scoring strike on a halfback pass to TYLER WEISS that proved to seal the deal for Santana.

“We knew that that would be open for us,” Lozoya said. “We’ve been practicing it all year.”

This momentum-changing play began when Gasner pitched the ball to Lozoya on his left, who then lobbed a pass to the wide-open Weiss for the score.

All night it was obvious the Sultans were men on a mission. They dominated the first half, taking a 24-6 lead.

“In the first half we came out and played hard,” Lozoya said. “For some reason we kinda lost our focus in the second half. It got a little hectic there for awhile.”

So intense was Coronado ’s offensive pressure on the Sultans that Lozoya was asked to play a significant amount of defense for only the second time this season.

“This is the most defense I’ve played all year,” he said. “But I was glad to do it – the name of the game is to win.”

The victory raised the Santana record to 11-1, which ties the school record established by the 1999 Sultans.

Gasner was on the money all night, completing 15 of 20 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns. His scoring bull’s-eyes included a 10-yard toss to GARRETT HATH that gave Santana a 21-0 lead.

After Coronado cut the Sultans advantage to five points, Gasner executed a perfect screen pass to SPENCER LOVE that covered 34 yards and stretched the Sultans edge to 31-19 with 52 seconds left in the third quarter.

Hard-nosed running back Love banged his way for 88 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Weiss averaged 7 yards on 5 runs, while Hath averaged 15 yards on two carries before leaving the game with an injury.

Weiss and Love were actually double threats as they each caught 3 passes for a combined 127 yards with 2 touchdowns.

Often overlooked kicker BRAD CORNISH was on top of his game, as he repeatedly landed his kickoffs in the opponents’ endzone. He also converted all five PAT attempts and booted a 34-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

“I can’t really explain how good this feels,” Gasner said. “But our main goal was to get to Qualcomm and now our focus is on Valley Center . We’re going down there to win."

DIVISION II
For Scotties, a 'rare' four-quarter performance to shutout Mission Hills

By Andrew Smith

LA MESA (12-2-11) — No one can blame the Helix Highlanders if they don’t remember how it feels to be in a competitive battle. For the season, they have outscored their opponents by an average score of 45-8.

In fact, the majority of their starters haven’t even stepped onto the field in the fourth quarter in exactly the last two calendar months due to lopsided victories.

“To tell you the truth I don’t even remember the last time I played a fourth quarter,” senior quarterback BRANDON LEWIS stated.

Ever since the Highlanders fell to Eastlake in their first game of the season, it seems like they have been on a mission to prove themselves the opposite of that team to all the doubters.

Mission accomplished Thursday night (Dec. 1) as the Highlanders took the air out of the balloon and punched their ticket to Qualcomm Stadium, blanking the Grizzlies 21-0.

They’ll be searching for their first San Diego CIF Division II title since ALEX SMITH and REGGIE BUSH led the Scotties to back-to-back crowns in 2000-2001.

In a hurry-up mode late in the first half, Lewis hit Hancock for a couple of underneath shovel-passes for big-gainers, before finally capping it off with a scoring strike to JIMMY PRUITT for the 22-yard touchdown strike in the corner of the end zone that had the entire Helix sidelines barking for good reason headed into the locker room.

“I saw a man running full-speed at Jimmy and I knew he wouldn’t be able to stop so I just threw it up to him,” Lewis said.

“Great scramble, great throw,” head coach TROY STARR praised.

“It’s not often you see Coach Starr so excited along the sidelines,” Lewis stated. “At that point I knew I had to have done something right.”

“That’s a defining moment for our team’s season and also in a kid’s career,” Starr said. “We all knew it was going to come sooner or later and he did it!”

Starr does not hand out accolades cheaply.

Mission Hills’ Dakota Westbrook took the first handoff of the night and rumbled 46 yards to potentially set the tone for an upset. Turns out the Highlanders 17-yard line would be the closest the Grizzlies would ever come to scoring against the top-ranked Highlanders (11-1).

ERNEST SHIPLEY and GARY THOMPSON dropped the Grizzlies for consecutive sacks along with a couple of false start penalties to halt their opening drive that seemed so positive, turning it into a kicking situation, missing a long, 50-yard field goal.

Seven DARRION HANCOCK handoffs later Helix was on the board when the senior scampered 35 yards to give the Scotties a 7-0 advantage.

Helix had entered halftime scoring single digits only once this year, and the Highlanders were not to be shortchanged this time either. With 2:30 on the clock before the half Helix was faced with an opportunity to change momentum one way or the other.

In a hurry up mode, Hancock paced the ground game for Helix by rushing 23 times for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns.

“This is probably the best team we’ve faced all year and the best defensively,” Hancock said. “So it feels great to be moving on to the next round.”

That single play took whatever momentum was in the game directly into the Scotties locker room and they responded as they came out with a 13-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a Hancock 2-yard score. After the 2-point conversion was successful, courtesy of Pruitt, it was a 21-0 lead Helix would not lose.

The Highlanders must now face the 7-time Division II defending champion Oceanside Pirates on Monday (Dec. 5) at Qualcomm Stadium at 4 p.m.

Helix defense stands tall early

LA MESA (12-2-11) — On just the second play of the ballgame, Mission Hills High running back Dakota Westbrook broke through the Helix line, romping for 46 yards and a first down deep into Highlanders territory.

But when you play defense for the top-rated Scotties, you simply don't allow any other opportunities; the ensuing pressure applied by the Helix defense was tremendous.

On consecutive plays, seniors ERNEST SHIPLEY and GARY THOMPSON countered the big rushing play by busting through Mission Hills blockers to register sacks on rollouts.

And when the Grizzlies (7-4-1) missed on a 50-yard field goal attempt, their only chance to move in front of the top-listed Division II school in California was gone as Helix (11-1) raced to a 21-0 triumph in the CIF San Diego Section semifinals Thursday (Dec. 1) at Jim Arnaiz Field.

"I just did my read, then the quarterback went outside of our defensive end," said Shipley, a middle linebacker. "I just cycled and got to him."

Thompson followed a similar route to take down Mission Hills' Connor Wynn.

"I got off the edge and the quarterback still had the ball," noted Thompson, a defensive end. "So I redirected (my pass rush) and got the sack."

The takedowns were two of four registered by Helix' defense, coupled with a fourth-quarter interception by cornerback JIMMY PRUITT to preserve the shutout.

The other sacks were recorded by RUBEN LEASAU and ARTHUR SHEPARD, while KENDAL KEYS also secured a pick in the second quarter, then racing 18 yards on the runback.

"I was waiting for that pass all game," said Pruitt, who gained a share of the East County lead with his fifth theft of the season. "I knew they would go with the double-move on a fake screen and throw it long – I was sitting on it since they were throwing screens all game."

Mission Hills tried various ways to move the ball early on, but with little success, as eight different Helix defenders registered tackles on the first eight plays or kick returns by the Grizzlies.

Indeed, everybody contributed. Thus, in their last eight starts, the Highlanders have yielded a mere 31 points – an average of less than four per outing.

"We're a brotherhood out on the field because we've been playing together for years," noted Pruitt. "So we're getting stronger and stronger, then we study our opponents and we play hard."

And for the first time this season, Helix players are allowed to talk openly about playing at Qualcomm Stadium. The Scotties tangle with long-time nemesis Oceanside in a 4:30 p.m. start on Monday (Dec. 5) after the third-seeded Pirates avenged an earlier loss to eliminate La Costa Canyon, 27-7.

"This is what we've been waiting for," Pruitt added. "We've went (to Qualcomm) three times but we lost. Now we're hungry and ready to eat."

Meanwhile, Mission Hills figures to again challenge for North County supremacy next season.

"Mission Hills is the real deal. If they come back next year with some anger, they can go somewhere," added Thompson. "They've got a good defense and a solid offense, so they can win it."

FEARLESS FORECASTER – Predictions

One final step to Qualcomm
No. 1 ranked Helix faces toughes opponent
since late September in 4th-seeded Grizzlies

LA MESA (11-30-11) — Helix coach TROY STARR doesn’t hesitate when asked who has been the Highlanders’ most challenging foe to date.

Fearless Forecaster

Week 13: 6-2 (.750)
Season: 84-22 (.792)

The 4th-year Highlanders’ mentor was referring to Mission Hills (7-3-1), which comes to Jim Arnaiz Field to take on the top-ranked Highlanders (10-1) in Thursday’s (Dec. 1) San Diego CIF Division II semifinals.

“No question they are the best we’ve seen,” Starr said of the Grizzlies who have not lost since Sept. 23 and possess a 10-10 tie with seven-time Division II champion Oceanside. “They are sound in what they do on both sides of the ball.”

Quarterback Connor Wynn (120-212, 1570 yards, 9 TDs, 9 int) and running back Adam Renteria (236-1439, 15 TDs) are the Grizzlies offensive cornerstones.

“They run a ball-control offense... want to control the clock,” Starr said. “They are probably a stronger running team, but can throw the ball when they need to do so.”

Helix has held eight of its foes to 7 points or less. Mission Hills has limited its last five opponents to 7 points or fewer.

In terms of common opponents Helix has vanquished Vista 42-7 and slaughtered Steele Canyon 49-7. Mission Hills topped Vista 20-7 and last week edged the Cougars 21-7.

The list of Helix standouts is seemingly endless with quarterback BRANDON LEWIS (145-231, 2312, 30 TDs passing) guiding the offense and end GARY THOMPSON, corner JIMMY PRUITT and safety KACY SMITH anchoring a rock-hard defense.

These teams have split a pair of defensive playoff battles in the past. The Grizzlies won 17-14 in 2007 after Helix grabbed a 13-12 edge the year before. Helix has steamrollered the majority of its foes, the last seven games resulting in a running clock. That won’t happen this time, but the nod goes to... Helix 28-14

DIVISION IV
CORONADO (9-3) at SANTANA (10-1) –
Neither of these teams has difficulty producing points and that will be obvious in Thursday’s (Dec. 1) San Diego CIF Division IV semifinal at Santee Community Stadium.

The Islanders, averaging 32.2 points per game, are coming off a stunning 54-36 upset of Grossmont Valley League champion and top-seeded Mount Miguel in the quarterfinals.

Santana coach DAVE GROSS is impressed by Coronado quarterback Austin Denson (144-272, 1828 yards, 22 TDs passing and 97-632, 8 TDs rushing).

“He was almost perfect against Mount Miguel,” Gross said. “He can make all the throws and can run it, too. I don’t remember any quarterback we’ve seen this year more efficient than this kid.

“This is a very impressive team.”

These teams have faced two common opponents this season. Santana clipped Kearny 35-25, and the Komets KO’d Coronado 31-21. On the flip side, Mount Miguel mauled Santana 37-23 in October.

Throwing the football has never been a problem for the Sultans as quarterback KYLE GASNER has delivered 23 touchdowns while suffering only four interceptions. Senior LANDON LOZOYA (42-775, 11 TDs) leads a solid corps of receivers.

Not to be overlooked, however, is running back SPENCER LOVE (109-751, 15 TDs) who galloped for 157 yards and two TDs in the Sultans’ 41-13 quarterfinal win over Imperial.

“People still perceive us as a passing team,” Gross said. “Granted, we can throw the ball pretty well, but we’ve also shown we can run the ball. We threw only 11 passes last game.”

The Sultans lead the all-time series 2-1, taking the last meeting 35-2 in 1999. Might take an abacus to keep track of this one, though... Santana 44-31,

DIVISION V – Fri., Dec. 2
FRANCIS PARKER (6-4) vs. CHRISTIAN (8-3), at Granite Hills
– Christian offensive coordinator DAVID BEEZER used to warn his teams about playing an opponent they’d beaten earlier in the season.

Not anymore.

Christian knocked off the Lancers 42-23 in a Coastal League joust two months ago. The Patriots churned out 390 yards in a balanced attack in that outing.

“I feel like we got a little bit of monkey off our back since we haven’t beaten them since 2007,” claimed Christian head coach MATT OLIVER.

That won’t carry much weight in Friday’s (Dec. 2) San Diego CIF Division V semifinal at Granite Hills’ Valley Stadium.

“Beating them the first time doesn’t matter now,” Beezer said. “By the same token our kids understand the fact that the loser goes home. We’ve been playing well. Our kids know what they have to do.”

Junior running back-linebacker RAYVON OWENS has made the Patriots a stronger team now than they were at the beginning of the season. In his last three games, Owens has bulled for 404 yards and seven TDs on 68 carries.

“Parker is very big up front and they have a solid running back (in Jesse Brookins who has rushed for 1,551 yards and 15 TDs),” Beezer added.... Christian 41-19.

Note: Beezer, a former Patriots standout last century, had his number (80) retired last weekend during halftime of Christian's quarterfinal-round triumph over Horizon.
