That in itself he finds exciting. But leading the South
to a 27-7 victory over the North in the 21st annual
Alex Spanos All-Star Classic Friday (July 8) at San
Diego Mesa College is an experience he vows never to
forget.
Its certainly one of the highlights of
my coaching career, Karlo said. Ive
heard people say coaches dont take all-star games
seriously. But the Mount Miguel staff did a good job
of coaching these kids up. We treated this game like
we wanted to be here. That carried over to the players
who proved they wanted to win.
And the South did so in style. By the middle of the
2nd quarter, the South (graduated seniors from the East
County , South Bay and City Conference) led 20-0. Eight
of those points were provided by versatile GILBERT PEREZ
of Granite Hills who finished the game with a total
of nine. He booted field goals of 28 and 32 yards in
the first half and was 3-for-3 on PATs.
Monte Vistas SHERVIN IRANIHA accounted for the
Souths only score in the 2nd half when he reeled
in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Olympians COBRIN
HUMPHREY. It was Humphreys second TD toss in the
game.
But the long gainer of the night was a crafty offensive
move by Karlo. Grossmonts DeSEAN WATERS, one of
three quarterbacks on the Souths roster, successfully
executed a 70-yard halfback option pass to Coronados
Jordan Jacobs.
We coached this game like we would any game we
play, Karlo stated. Our staff took this
very seriously and our kids became a nine-day family
(which included practice). Im very proud of them.
We came in as individuals and performed like a group.
Karlo noted that none of his 45 players was asked to
play both ways, but everybody in uniform got on the
field.
We didnt just pick people at random,
he said. We studied our choices, talked to a lot
of people, so that we would have two complete platoons.
We wanted to be deep.
Helix safety KENNY KEYS recorded seven tackles, intercepted
a pass and forced a fumble for the South. Defensive
player of the game honors for the South went to Chris
Campano of Scripps Ranch, who recorded seven tackles,
two sacks and broke up a pass.
Karlo also praised the work of defensive lineman ROBERT
CRAIGHEAD of El Capitan . The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Craighead
is headed to San Diego State where he is ticketed to
play tight end.
Craighead was lights out on the D-line,
Karlo said. Too bad we couldnt play SAM
MEREDITH (Helix) next to him.
Meredith missed the game with a bruised hip.
Defense was a major part of the Souths effort.
We beat the North because they couldnt
run the ball, Karlo noted. Just think about
how much tougher we would have been with Meredith in
there too.
Perez is a quadruple threat in that he plays receiver,
handles kickoffs, place kicks and punts.
I know he can place kick but I didnt realize
he was such a good kickoff guy, Karlo said Perez.
Perez plans to play receiver at Grossmont College in
the fall.
Thats the position I prefer, he said.
Its quite an honor to be invited to a game
like this with all these good players. Everybody in
the game was in the moment.
The South avenged a 27-3 loss to the North from a year
ago.
Its always fun to beat the North County
, Perez added. They were doing a lot of
talking about how they were going to beat us at the
All-Star dinner last night.
One player that the North took liberties at bad-mouthing
was Montgomery s Diego Rodriguez. The 5-foot-9,
175-pound running back rushed for 2,360 yards and 29
touchdowns on 262 carries last season.
Their favorite thing they like to say is we dont
play anybody and that all our stats are inflated,
said Perez.
Rodriguez didnt run a track meet over the North,
thats for sure. But he turned a 4th-and-inches
play into a 45-yard touchdown run that made it 10-0
in the opening quarter.
Valhallas HANSSELL WILSON turned in a strong
first quarter for the South. He returned the opening
kickoff 29 yards and caught passes of 7 and 25 yards
from starting quarterback Sean McKaveney.
21st annual Spanos Classic set for Friday East County represented by 13 players
This years game features graduated high school
seniors from last season in a North vs. South format.
Mount Miguel's TOM KARLO will coach the South while
Robert Cendro of San Marcos directs the North.
Leading the East County contingent are Helix kingpins
SAM MEREDITH (DL, San Diego State) and KENNY KEYS (Safety,
UNLV).
SHERVIN IRANIHA (Arizona State), one of the all-time
leading receivers in Monte Vista history, should provide
a fine target for the Souths three quarterbacks.
Iraniha, also a state caliber wrestler, caught 86 passes
for 1,224 yards the past two seasons.
El Capitan running back DAKOTA FURR (239-1,788 yards,
17 TDs), East County's leading rusher, will add some
ground power. He has decided to attend Western New Mexico
under West Hills High alum and now Mustangs head coach
ADAM CLARK.
Other Inlanders slated to perform for the South are
Valhalla DB HANSELL WILSON (San Jose State), El Capitan
tight end ROBERT CRAIGHEAD (San Diego State), Mount
Miguel corner RONNIE HICKS (Humboldt State), Mount Miguel
OL REGGIE JONES (San Diego State), Granite Hills receiver-kicker
GILBERT PEREZ (Grossmont College) and Mount Miguel OL TAURUS
JAMES (Grossmont College).
In addition to Perez, who caught 44 passes for 785
yards and 8 TDs as well as racking up 100 points
including 7 field goals the South can look toward
two other versatile nuggets in Wragg and Waters. Wragg
tallied 132 points while compiling 2,143 all-purpose
yards.
Waters, who will most likely carry the ball rather
than take snaps in the Spanos Classic, generated 2,305
yards total offense as the Foothillers signal-caller.
The North leads the series 9-6 since the states
longest running all-star high school football game in
Southern California was switched to its current format
in 1995. The North won 27-3 last year.
Admission is $8 (12-older), $5 (5-12) and free (4-under).
The cost for parking is $5.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Craighead, who is headed for
San Diego State, caught a handful of passes and scored
a touchdown in the back of the end zone as the California
squad rolled to a 27-7 win over the Arizona All-Stars
in the inaugural event between the two regions.
An estimated crowd of 3,000 attended the event.
Dick Larson, 77, said he felt privileged to be asked
to lead Southern California's first group of All-Stars
to Arizona. La Verne Damien High's football stadium
was named after him last season. In 23 years, Larson
led the school to a pair of CIF Southern Section titles
and sent countless players to colleges.
Craighead also plans to play in the 21st annual Alex
Spanos All-Star Football Classic between San Diego County's
top graduating seniors on Friday (July 8) at San Diego
Mesa College.
Santana tight end Travis "T.D."
Gross signs with
Arizona in accepting the move to offensive tackle. (Photo by Frank Price, youatplay.com)
T.D. goes from T.E. to O.T. Gross accepts Arizona offer
Although Gross has been recognized for his skills as
a tight end throughout his high school career, he will
switch to offensive tackle for the Pac-12 Wildcats.
Sure, I like to catch passes, but I like blocking
the most, said Gross, who will be a senior at
Santana in the fall. For me, Arizona is the best
situation all around. Its a great school, great
conference and yeah, all of their games are on TV and
thats a bonus. Plus, it is close enough for my
parents to come to the games.
The 6-foot-6, 254-pound Gross has earned All-Grossmont
League tight end honors each of the past three seasons.
He was a second team All-EastCountySports.com selection
after catching 25 passes for 276 yards and three TDs
last year.
Gross had plenty of choices. UCLA and Utah were among
those seeking him as an offensive lineman. Nevada ,
New Mexico and UNLV were interested in him as a tight
end.
Basically, it boiled down to the Pac 12 schools
wanted him as an offensive lineman and the majority
of the Mountain West Conference schools were recruiting
him as a tight end, said Santana head football
coach DAVE GROSS, T.D.s father. He is a
prototype O-lineman. He has the frame to put on more
weight.
The elder Gross was an offensive line standout at the
University Pacific in the late 1960s. T.D.s sister,
KIM GROSS, who graduated from Santana earlier this month,
accepted a rowing scholarship to Sacramento State.
All involved said the final decision belonged to T.D.
My sister gave me some good advice
Pick a school you would like even if you didnt
play football, T.D. said. Im
excited about this opportunity. And too, I am relieved
that Ive made this decision so I can enjoy my
senior year.
Gross never played football until his freshman year
of high school.
When I first started playing I never thought
anything this big would come out of it, he said.
It's been an unbelievable spring, Mount
Miguel football coach TOM KARLO said. We have
had over 45 college coaches on campus. We could have
10 guys playing college football next year on scholarship.
Two-way lineman MALCOM JACKSON, who will be a 6-foot-3,
255-pound senior in the fall, has made a verbal commitment
to play football at the University of Washington in
2012. Jackson will start both ways for the Matadors
as a senior this season.
The big guy had plenty of college choices before casting
his fate with the Huskies. A first team All-East County
Sports.com first team pick as a junior, Jackson also
received offers from Arizona, UCLA, Washington State,
San Diego State, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado State
to name a few.
Malcolm is hard working, physical and quick,
Karlo said. Washington envisions him as a DT.
He has room to grow and unlimited potential.
Mount Miguel defensive back ABDILATIF UGAS has decided
to make a change in direction. Once committed to Bemidji
State, Ugas will now attend Chadron (Neb.) State, a
Division II institution. One more Mount Miguel standout
6-foot-4, 215-pound senior-to-be defensive end
CORY LITTLETON, the 2010 Grossmont Valley League Defensive
Player of the Year is sifting through offers
that include UCLA, Washington, Washington St., Colorado
State, Nevada, SDSU, New Mexico and UNLV. He has yet
to make a decision.
Santana Grad Finds A Home
Offensive lineman IVAN CARRENO, a 6-foot-1, 305-pound
graduate of Santana, has accepted an NAIA football scholarship
to Mayville (N.D.) State University.
No doubt much of that eye-opening exhilaration has
centered around college football scholarships. You know,
like the Clash blurts out its lyrics, Should I
stay or should I go?
After more than 30 schools made a pitch for the 6-foot-5,
195-pound Dillon, the Patriots passer made an oral commitment
to accept a scholarship to the University of Colorado
on Thursday (May 12).
Bottom line is, No other school made me feel
more welcome, Dillon said.
Dillon reportedly had offers from Arizona, Cincinnati,
Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State and Vanderbilt.
He was also reportedly interested in Oregon, USC and
Northwestern.
After visiting the Boulder, Colo. campus with his father
on an unofficial visit during spring break, Dillon was
convinced hed found Nirvana. Among the magnets
to making Dillon a Buffalo signal-caller in 2012 were
former Redskins tight end coach and now CU head coach
Jon Embree and assistant coach Rip Scherer, who spent
six seasons as quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers
and Cleveland Browns.
All this recruiting stuff has been crazy for
sure, said Dillon, who racked up 2,982 passing
yards and 19 TDs last year as a junior at Christian.
The (CU) coaches had a huge influence on my decision.
Coach Embree made me feel at home and had my best interests
in mind. I connected with him and coach Scherer right
away.
As one college scout, Scott Kennedy, said, Dillon
is a tall, thin quarterback that has a quick release
and a live arm. Despite his lack of size, he shows toughness
and the ability to stand tall in the pocket, release
the ball and take a hit. He has good footwork and is
an adequate runner. He doesn't have a rocket for an
arm, but because of his release, the ball arrives quickly.
Needs to take less chances when he's under pressure
as he'll throw into traffic at times.
Having made his commitment to his future, Dillon said
he feels a sense of relief.
I feel like I have a 50-pound weight lifted off
my shoulder, he said.
Dillon is looking forward to operating Colorado s
pro style offense in the Pac-12 Conference, which will
match him against such powers as Stanford, USC, UCLA,
Washington and Cal among others.
My cell-phone has been blowing up, Dillon
said. I cant tell you how many calls Ive
gotten the past few days.
Bussey has been a teacher in Valhallas
social science department for 7½ years
and is also a co-head coach for the school's track
team.
Hes also spent plenty of time working with
the Norsemens football team. He was an assistant
at Valhalla from 2003-2006.
Most recently, he has been the defensive coordinator
for the San Diego Stallions, a semi-pro football
team in the La Belle Community Football League
one of the newest and most competitive
minor league football organizations in America.
Bussey has contacted many of the returning staff
and most have agreed to remain on board.
We look forward to a smooth transition,
said Wilson, who was forced to find a replacement
when former head coach STEVE SUTTON stepped down.
I want to thank you for your patience through
this process and I look forward to the upcoming
years of Norsemen Football.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Cummings played wide receiver,
cornerback and quarterback the past two seasons.
Cummings ran for seven touchdowns in 2010 and
290 yards. He made 43 receptions for 692 yards
with six touchdowns in 2009. He also made 30 tackles
on defense. Cummings earned first team All-Southern
League honors in 2009 and 2010 and was the Knights
most valuable player in 2010.
The top 33 seniors in Southern California will play
the top 33 players in Arizona.
We have had a lot of great players come out of
El Capitan but this is the first one in football to
have this honor, Vaqueros coach RON BURNER said.
The 6-foot-4, 258-pound Craighead caught 26 passes
for 367 yards in a predominantly running game offense.
A good hands guy, and a first team All-East County tight
end selection as a senior, Craighead was also a beast
of a blocker and a tenacious defender who has accepted
a scholarship to SDSU.
The biggest hurdle is making sure SDSU allows
him to play as well as in the San Diego All Star game
in July, Burner said.
The SoCal team will be coached by the legendary Herb
Meyer of El Camino.
Valhalla football coach Steve
Sutton. (ECS file photo)
Valhalla's Sutton announces resignation Steps down from both football, girls fastpitch
posts
The 61-year old Sutton the second winningest
football coach in Grossmont Conference history with
a 137-95-2 record in 21 seasons has resigned
his post at Valhalla after guiding the Norsemen to a
26-18 mark over the past four seasons.
His last three Valhalla teams compiled a 24-11 record
and made the playoffs all three years.
Sutton, who also coached at West Hills for 17 years,
has developed one of the most successful passing attacks
in East County history. During his tenure the veteran
skipper has produced blue chip passers including BRYAN
HALSEY, LON SHERIFF, MONTY DUKE, TANNER ENGSTRAND, TONY
BURNER, JORDAN ADAMS, BLAKE SUTTON, KAMY AHMADIAN, PHILIP
STABACK, PETE THOMAS and FRANKLIN FOSTER all
of whom ranked at or near the top of the East County
statistical charts.
While he was at West Hills Sutton directed the Wolf
Pack to seven Grossmont League football championships.
A graduate of El Capitan, Grossmont College and the
University of the Pacific, Sutton was also an offensive
line coach at Grossmont High and San Diego City College
in the mid-1970s and 1980s.
Sutton, who is ending a 37-year teaching career in
the Grossmont District, coached softball for 30 seasons.
He ranks third all-time in San Diego CIF history with
a softball coaching record of 482-290-15. He spent the
majority of his softball coaching career at West Hills.
He also coached at Grossmont. His teams won SDCIF titles
in 1989 and 1999.
The honorees include: Grossmont College linebacker
PAT KELLY, Steele Canyon High wide receiver JAKE WRAGG,
Christian High running back/linebacker TYRONE SAULS,
Helix High defensive lineman SAM MEREDITH, and Grossmont
High linebacker/defensive end COLTON ALEXIO.
Each year, 26 of the area's best and brightest high
school and college football players are honored at a
banquet attended by more than 400 people. The event
is one of the most prestigious athletic/academic functions
in the region.
More than $30,000 worth in scholarships were distributed.
The NFF chapter's co-founder and College Football Hall
of Fame Gold Medal winner, Walter J. Zable, earned the
honor of having the chapter named after him by being
one of the football foundation's greatest supporters.
It serves a community of more than 3 million residents,
making it one of the nation's largest.

Looking into the future the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Keys
is focused on football. He proved that by accepting
a gridiron scholarship offer from UNLV of the Mountain
West Conference earlier this week.
Both Helix football coach TROY STARR and Highlanders
basketball coach JOHN SINGER agree that Keys future
is in football.
I love basketball, but I know that football is
my future, Keys said.
So why did he select the Rebels over other interested
parties including Boise State and San Diego State?
It came down to the way they treated me,
Keys said. They made me feel at home and that
was one of the things I was looking for.
The fact that Keys did not play football his junior
year caused him to be lost on the major college radar.
I heard all kinds of things because of that,
he said. Some schools talked about grey shirts
and stuff like that. Only UNLV made me a priority.
A small post player in basketball, Keys figures to
be a large free safety at UNLV.
MOUNT MIGUELs LEE LIKES SACRAMENTO STATE
Mount Miguel linebacker DIANTE LEE has accepted a football
scholarship to Sacramento State. The 5-foot-11, 208-pound
two-year varsity starter logged 39 tackles and 5 sacks
for the Matadors as a senior. He also competes in track
and carries a 3.3 grade-point-average.
Diante just turned 17, so he has a lot of room
to grow, said Mount Miguel head football coach
TOM KARLO. Sacto State is getting a quality young
man who has the potential to be a real impact player
in a few years.
Their LBs coach likes his athleticism and speed.
They are going to put him on the weakside and let him
chase the ball.
OTHER EAST COUNTY COMMITMENTS
Helix linebacker-running back RAYMONT NAILON has signed
a national letter with Humboldt State as has Mount Miguel
defensive back RONNIE HICKS.
Iowa Wesleyan, an NAIA school with an enrollment of
850, signed up East County products STEVEN ARMSTRONG
(DE, West Hills), ANDREW TRAN (RB, West Hills) and JARRETT
DALE (RB-LB, West Hills).
Grossmont defensive back JOEY ACOSTA signed on with
Northern State University (Aberdeen, S.D.).
NATIONAL SIGNING DAY
Waters signs with Division II power
It was a smooth transition for Waters, who rushed for
1,190 yards and averaged 192 yards total offense per
game. He scored 226 points and directed the Foothillers
to nine victories in 12 games and into the San Diego
CIF Division II quarterfinals.
The 5-foot-8, 175-pound Waters will attend Bemidji
State (Minn.) on a football scholarship next season.
The Beavers are an NCAA Division II university.
Also making their intentions official during Wednesdays
(Feb. 2) signing of national letters of intent were:
Helix senior tight end-defensive lineman SAM MEREDITH
(San Diego State); Mount Miguel defensive lineman REGGIE
JONES (SDSU); El Capitan tight end ROBERT CRAIGHEAD
(SDSU); and Christian linebacker-tight end TYRONE SAULS
(Air Force Academy).
Tyrone Sauls
Sauls lands a 'big team' berth Named First-Team, All-State
for all divisions by Cal-Hi Sports
On Monday (Jan. 24), Sauls, already named the
Small Schools state player of the year by Cal-Hi
Sports, gained a berth on the All-State
first team for all divisions by the leading
authority on high school athletics in California.
Sauls was named on the first-team for defense
after registering more than 100 tackles as linebacker
for the Patriots. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior
also rushed for 1,759 yards and 29 touchdowns
on offense, including a CIF San Diego Section
record-tying 7 touchdowns in a single game.
Several Pac-12 Conference colleges are recruiting
Sauls, but word is he's leaning towards Air Force
or the Naval Academy.
The only CIFSDS player to also gain a first-team
berth also came on defense in Vista defensive
back Stefan McClure, the section's defensive player
of the year in media voting through the San Diego
Hall of Champions.
Named to the all-state
third team was Helix High defensive lineman
SAM MEREDITH, along with Christian High quarterback
SHANE DILLON.
Patriots' Sauls to fly with the Falcons Accepts appointment with Air Force Academy
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Sauls, who played a variety
of positions for the Patriots, has been tabbed to focus
on playing fullback back in the Falcons triple-option
offense.
A mechanical engineer major, Sauls, an All-State linebacker,
picked Air Force over Navy in a last-minute decision.
I felt that the major I chose would offer me
a lot of different jobs, Sauls said.
Oregon, San Diego State and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
also made on table offers. Others expressing interest
included Stanford, Washington, UCLA, Colorado State,
Colorado and Harvard.
In the past week, Air Force Academy head coach Troy
Calhoun and Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo both made
visits to Sauls home.
Playing fullback at Air Force was definitely
what I was looking for, Sauls said. Their
style of offense was what I was looking for. I was comfortable
with that.
I liked Navy, too, because like Air Force, they
believe in defense first, Sauls said.
Given that Sauls also plays basketball, he remains
focused on athletics at the high school level.
I praise God and my teammates to help me get
where I am, Sauls said. By the same token,
I feel the pressure is off by a long shot. Knowing where
Im going is a comfortable feeling and a relief.
Sauls registered more than 100 tackles as linebacker
for the Patriots. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior also
rushed for 1,759 yards and 29 touchdowns on offense,
including a CIF San Diego Section record-tying 7 touchdowns
in a single game.
Highlanders' Milo, Christian's Dillon,
tabbed among All-State underclassmen
Selected to the 2010 team of state honorees are
Helix High defensive lineman WILLIAM MILO and
Christian High quarterback SHANE DILLON.
Milo (5-9, 265), who helped the Scotties to a
No. 3 ranking in the final CIF-San Diego Section
rankings by both major media outlets, was a second-team
pick on the All-Sophomores state team.
Helix (11-1) finished rated 30th in the Southland
in the final Cal-Hi Sports rankings after
winning 11 straight ballgames before falling to
4-time Division II section champion Oceanside
in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Dillon was tabbed to the state third
team on the All-Juniors unit. The 6-foot-5, 185-pound
passer threw for 19 touchdowns and an East County-leading
2,982 yards.
Both were also All-East County selections, while
Milo also made the All-Section second team chosen
by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Later this week, Cal-Hi Sports (a division
of ESPN RISE) will release its All-State Small
Schools which features Player of the Year
TYRONE SAULS of Christian High All-State
Medium Schools, All-State First Team, All-State
Second Team and All-State Third Team.
Santee resident TAY SNEDDON, who has served the past
five seasons as Madison Highs defensive coordinator
in football and softball head coach, has accepted the
Wolf Packs top football post, West Hills assistant
principal DAVE RIOS announced.
He replaces JESS BARRAGAN, who guided West Hills to
a 3-7 record last season after taking over for Wolf
Pack alum CASEY ASH.
Sneddon, 39, who moved to Santee in March of last year,
had a connection to West Hills in that he was the best
man in the wedding of Wolf Pack baseball coach JASON
FOWLER in 2008. The two have coached football together
at Madison the past few seasons.
Its always been my dream to teach and coach
youth, Sneddon said. I look forward to a
new challenge as a head football coach/teacher utilizing
my strong coaching and leadership abilities. I have
the passion, education and drive to be a successful
head coach/teacher, molding youth in the right manner.
Sneddon, who played football as a youth at South Torrance
High, El Camino Community College and San Diego State,
has 10 years of varsity coaching experience under his
belt.
A U.S. history and World History teacher the past decade,
Sneddon said he will continue teaching at Madison until
a similar position can be set up for him at West Hills.
I know the competition in our (Grossmont Hills
League) is going to be tough, Sneddon noted. The
schedule is what it is and we arent going to turn
things around overnight. But Ive been in leagues
where weve been the underdogs before and good
things have happened over time.
Sneddon handled the defense for Madison which knocked
off Valley Center 40-14 to capture the San Diego CIF
Division IV championship and qualify for a berth in
the State Bowl Championships.
I like to think I can put my stamp on a program,
he said. I hope to do that at West Hills.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Aztecs
get Maized SDSU coach Hoke,
a former Michigan assistant, given 'dream' offer
by Wolverines
Fact is, Meredith was committed to SDSU no matter who
was going to be the head coach. That person we now know
is former New Mexico head coach and SDSU defensive coordinator
Rocky Long.
I never tell a kid to select a school for its coach,
noted Helix High head coach Troy Starr. They can
be gone the first time they get a better offer. I tell
my kids to base their choice on the school, academics
and the overall football program.
Meredith, a highly honored athlete in the CIF-SDS, is
ticketed to play tight end for the Aztecs. He was also
a defensive line stalwart for the Highlanders.
Along with being a standout middle linebacker, Sauls
equaled a section record by scoring seven touchdowns
in a single contest, rushing for six and gaining another
on a pass reception in a road game at Mission Prep of
San Luis Obispo.
Overall, Sauls recorded 31 touchdowns (29 on the ground)
to lead the East County in scoring. He was also second
with 1,737 rushing yards.
"We love player of the year candidates that shine
on both sides of the ball and that certainly is the case
for Sauls," said MARK TENNIS, the longtime editor
of CalHiSports, a division of ESPN RISE. "He
came up huge for the Patriots while putting himself in
the San Diego Section record book."
Mr.
Football
Christian High's Tyrone Sauls
(40) was named
California state small-schools Player of the Year. (File photo by Frank Price, youatplay.com)
The honor is especially welcome considering Christian
finished last in the Coastal League, considered the top
Division IV-V league in California, in which league champion
The Bishop's went undefeated and captured the state bowl
game for small-school division teams to post a perfect
14-0 ledger.
While Sauls posted great numbers on offense, it was
on defense where the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder is more known
by college coaches.
Sauls was in on more than 100 tackles for the second
straight season and was named first team All-San Diego
Section. He is mulling over numerous college scholarship
offers and reportedly may go to national powerhouse
Oregon.
This is the third straight year in which the San Diego
Section has nabbed at least one of the player of the
year honors. Sauls follows 2008 Mr. Football honoree
Tyler Gaffney (Cathedral Catholic, now at Stanford)
and 2009 Mr. Football winner Dillon Baxter (Mission
Bay, now at USC).
Sauls was a first-team, All-East County selection on both
sides of the ball, including co-player of the year on
offense with Furr, along with earning All-CIF recognition
by the San Diego Hall of Champions' media panel.
Mount Miguel tackle Reggie Jones
(72). (WHHS courtesy photo)
They registered an early major strike when they received
a commitment from Mount Miguel 6-foot-6, 301-pound offensive
lineman REGGIE JONES.
A first-team All-East County and All-Grossmont Valley
League pick, Jones was also recruited by Idaho, New Mexico,
Arizona and Fresno State.
"Reggie has a great work ethic and is very mature.
He knows what it will take to be successful and is ready
to put in the work to be a great Div. I football player,"
Mount Miguel coach TOM KARLO said.
A three-year varsity letterman and senior team captain,
Jones has the makings of playing at the next level.
Reggie is just scratching the surface on how good
he could be, Karlo said. He has great feet,
long arms and a great frame to add weight. It is great
that Reggie has an opportunity to play college football
in front of his friends and family.
The Matadors (8-2-1) posted their best overall record
in more than a decade, capturing their first league
title since 1987. Over the past two seasons, Jones blocked
for 1,000-yard rushers in DERALL HUNTER (East County
leading 2,090 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2009) and DERRICK
DUNN (1,105 yards and Grossmont Conference leading 22
touchdowns in 2010).

(Final
Stats)
The Wolf Pack finished 3-7 overall and
0-5 in the Grossmont Hills League last season.
Barragan had been coaching football at the community
college level the previous two years. Hed also
been a head football coach at Mount Miguel from 2002-04
where his Matadors compiled a 10-20 record under his
tutelage.
West Hills athletic director DON RUTLEDGE said the
school is seeking a replacement immediately. Interested
parties should contact Rutledge at (619) 956-0530.

On the offensive side, Christians TYRONE SAULS
and El Capitans DAKOTA FURR were tabbed the East

of PETE THOMAS to Colorado State. Foster passed for
a Grossmont Conference-leading 2,423 yards.
Monte Vistas MATT PARRIS, who played running
back, quarterback and linebacker is East County Sports.coms
choice for Offensive Unsung Player of the Year.
The East County Sports.com selection for Coach
of the Year goes to RON MURPHY of Grossmont, who guided
the youthful Foothillers to a 9-2-1 finish, which included
a double-overtime setback to eventual San Diego CIF
finalist Mira Mesa.
Sauls also made first team on defense as well as offense.
Players named to the All-East County Sports.com
first team for the second year in a row included
El Capitan tight end ROBERT CRAIGHEAD, Helix wide receiver
AUSTIN GONZALEZ and Monte Vista receiver SHERVIN IRANIHA
on the offensive side.
