Thanks to an opportunistic offense, an
undersized but swarming defense, possibly
the best kicker in the San Diego Section
and terrific clock management by the coaching
staff, the Wolf Pack rallied for 17 fourth-quarter
points to stun Steele Canyon, 20-17, in
the Cougars homecoming game on Friday
night (Oct. 11).
This is one of the biggest games
Ive ever been a part of, and Ive
been with some CIF championship teams (at
Madison ), West Hills coach TAY SNEDDON
said. This was huge. Im so proud
of our guys for pulling this off.
West Hills (5-1, 1-0 GHL) trailed 17-3
with 10 minutes left in the game and somehow
managed to beat Steele Canyon (2-4, 0-1
GHL) for the first time in seven years.
DANIEL McMANUS, cool as the breezy air
at Cougar Stadium, belted a 24-yard field
goal as time expired to set off a wild celebration
on the visitors side.
Pretty much when I kicked it, I knew
it was good, said McManus, who leads
the section with 10 field goals in six games,
including a pair of 52-yarders in the same
game three weeks ago. I mean, it was
nerve-racking before the kick, but it really
was only a chip-shot.
Once the snap and hold were good,
I just punched it in.
Moments earlier, Steele Canyon had an opportunity
to go ahead, but a 36-yard field-goal attempt
resulted in a muffed snap, and the Wolf
Pack took over at their 30-yard line.
NOAH YLAGAN gained 9 yards on the next
play, but a holding penalty brought the
ball back 10 yards. On second-and-13 from
the 27-yard line, McManus leaped over a
Cougar defender to snare a pass from STEPHEN
SCHINDLER. McManus had the end zone in sight
before being tripped up from behind by JEBARI
GAUSE-BROWN and had to settle for a 38-yard
pickup to the Steele Canyon 35-yard line.
Thought I had six (points),
said McManus, who caught three balls for
75 yards.
Methodically, West Hills then rushed seven
times for 28 yards to set up McManus
winning kick by calling a timeout with 0:02
left on the clock.
We knew exactly what we needed to
do, Sneddon said. Lets
run the clock. Lets go for the win.
Weve got the best kicker in the county.
After Steele Canyon called a timeout to
try to ice McManus, long snapper MATT LIPSCOMB
pitched a perfect feed to fill-in holder
Ylagan, and McManus split the uprights.
In four years in this league, this
team has never been in first place,
Sneddon said. I know its only
the first game, and we have a long way to
go, but its huge to beat a team like
Steele Canyon.
Since moving into the reconfigured Grossmont
Hills League, West Hills was 2-13 against
league foes over the past three seasons.
For years we were able to push West
Hills around, Steele Canyon coach
SCOTT LONGERBONE said. Obviously thats
not the case anymore. Tay has his kids believing
in the program. He has his kids in the weight
room, and that shows. They have a great
defense, and they came back from a 17-3
deficit in the fourth quarter. Thats
great coaching. They kept playing for four
quarters, and we didnt.
Steele Canyon improved on a 7-3 halftime
advantage on the fourth play of the third
quarter. After completing only one pass
in three attempts in the first half, JORDAN
JOHNSON heaved a 64-yard scoring strike
to LAWRENCE DICKENS to make it 14-3.
Late in the third quarter, KENNETH BAGDASAR
booted a 26-yard field goal to make it 17-3.
West Hills then fumbled the ensuing kickoff
return, and MACKEY BOWERS recovered it for
the Cougars at the Wolf Pack 19-yard line.
What looked to be game-set-match for the
Cougars, actually started a tremendous rally
for the Wolf Pack. Three plays later, the
Cougars botched another field-goal snap,
and PEANUT HERRADA intercepted the pass
from the Cougars holder.
After a 15-yard pass interference penalty
on Steele Canyon, Schindler tossed a 51-yard
TD pass to Herrada as the Wolf Pack pulled
within 17-9 with 10:39 to play. (The PAT
attempt was blocked by Gause-Brown).
Seventeen seconds later, NOAH ORTIZ intercepted
a pass and cut all the way across the field
for a 30-yard TD return to make it 17-15
before Ylagan turned a short pass into a
great score on the ensuing 2-point conversion.
Steele Canyon had built its lead behind
the running of MARKELL LINDLEY, who finished
with 158 yards on 28 carries, including
a 61-yard run in the first quarter that
set up his own 3-yard score on the next
play.
With the game tied in the fourth quarter,
Lindley rushed seven straight times for
39 yards before that drive stalled, and
the Cougars botched their potential game-winning
kick.
Weve got to play all four quarters,
Longerbone said. We did not play all
four quarters tonight. When you dont
play all four quarters, you lose your homecoming
game.
West Hills finished with 234 total yards
to Steele Canyon s 296, but it was
the big plays by the Wolf Pack defense that
turned this one.
We feel like we have one of the best
defenses in the East County, Herrada
said. I think we showed that tonight.
Said Sneddon, Defense has been our
backbone all year, and they bowed up again
tonight, especially when it mattered.
Coming off a tough loss to El Capitan
two weeks ago, West Hills has positioned
itself well for a Division II playoff
berth as it heads to Valhalla next week.
Steele Canyon, with arguably the toughest
schedule in the section but assured of a
playoff berth in the new Open Division,
will try to rebound on the road against
the insanely wild offense of Grossmont.
Weve got some issues we need
to work out, Longerbone said. In
this league, were going to have to
kick and scratch to get to.500.
Notes: West Hills snapped a long, 6-game
losing streak to the Cougars in posting their
first-ever win in Jamul (the Wolf Pack
did win once at Grossmont High).
Perennial favorite Grossmont (5-1, 1-0 GHL) pulled
a narrow 63-49 escape against Granite Hills (3-3, 0-1
GHL) in the Grossmont Hills League opener.
In the second quarter, JAKE HAAR took a handoff up
the middle and used the power blocking of DUSTIN BINNS
and TARIQ BOUTROS to score from 33 yards out, giving
the Foothillers a 21-14 lead. Haar earlier in the quarter
had tied the game on a touchdown run, finishing with
3 touchdowns in the game. He also had 175 yards rushing.
This is the best game Ive had so far,
said Haar, a 5-foot-7 running back. Its
a lot easier to score touchdowns when the holes are
huge and the blockings good, like it was today.
Were primarily a passing team but the running
game was working so well we didnt go away from
it.
The Eagles were down 28-14 when junior wideout MICHAEL
LEDESMA took a handoff and the left-hander tossed a
touchdown pass to senior BLAKE DeHAVEN, who caught the
pass right at the goal line for the score.
DeHaven also returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown
in the third quarter.
In a game which seemingly had very little defense,
the deciding play may have been an interception return
for touchdown by Grossmont senior JUSTIN PEACE, since
the offenses were rarely stopped. The Foothillers lineman
released his tight end and jumped in the air to take
down the attempted short pass, then raced 76 yards the
other way for the score, giving Grossmont a 49-35 advantage
in the fourth.
The Eagles got the score back when Ledesma came across
the backfield from his receiver position and took a
run around left end. He got several nice blocks along
the way, including a backfield block by YAHIA BENCHENCE
and a key pickup downfield by JESSE BISBAL on the way
to a 56-yard score to make it 49-42 with 8:40 left in
the game
Senior running back JOSH ANDERSON scored three touchdowns
for Grossmont to make it 56-42.
Grossmont again was ahead by two touchdowns when Ledesma
struck again for the Eagles on another end around, this
time to the right side. Ledesma ran virtually the same
route, however, it was like a mirrored-reflection of
his previous score, as this one came from 30 yards out.
He finished with 133 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Haar sealed the scoring late on a 40-yard run up the
middle, when he took a handoff and pushed aside four
would-be tacklers before outracing another, then smashing
over a final defender inside the 5 for the score with
2:24 left in the game.
J.T. BARNES had a touchdown in the second quarter for
Grossmont as well as 8 for 8 PATs, while junior SETH
COLLINS also had a touchdown for Granite Hills.
Quarterback CHRIS MEREDITH threw a touchdown pass to
CHRIS KOONS to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead early in
the game. Meredith finished by hitting 13 of 20 passes
for 142 yards.

No. 14 MOUNT MIGUEL 42, No. 10 EL CAPITAN 21
When it comes time to pass out the trophies for
the Grossmont Valley League championship, Mount Miguel
(5-2, 1-0 GVL) is usually at the front of the line.
In fact, unless the Matadors collapse they will be able
to claim their fourth league title at the expense of
the Vaqueros (6-1, 0-1 GVL).
These teams are both predominantly offensively loaded.
But both squads turned to the ground game to try to
pull out a victory Friday night (Oct. 11) in the GVL
opener.
Mount Miguel quarterback BRAD MORENO completed 5 of
9 passes for 79 yards and rushed for 65 for 6 carries.
But the top guns for the Matadors were BEN LOMIBAO,
who scored 4 touchdowns on 21 carries for 157 yards,
and TRE BRYERS, who had 16 carries for 111 yards and
a touchdown.
Lomibao could have had an even bigger game had he not
had to leave the game early in the fourth quarter with
a concussion
All we talked about was winning our fourth straight
league title, said Bryers. And now that
weve got it, its a pretty exhilarating feeling.
Mount Miguel jumped on top of El Capitan 20-7 in the
first quarter and 28-14 by halftime.
El Capitan quarterback BRAD CAGLE was under pressure
all night by the Matador defense but completed 13 of
24 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed
for 48 yards and a score.
KEITH LUSK logged a fumble recovery and an interception
for the Matadors, while AUGUSTIN BALTAZAR recorded two
pass breakups and interception. Lomibao had a pass breakup,
a fumble recovery and a sack, while CODY STONE and RASHAD
TATE each had a sack.
SCOTT ROOT caught 7 passes for 60 yards for the Vaqueros,
while CHRIS PEARSON pulled down 3 passes for 78 yards
and a touchdown.
DANIEL GOULET recorded a sack for the Vaqueros and
WYATT ALVERAZ had a pass breakup.

No. 8 HELIX 47, VALHALLA 10 The Norsemen
unlocked the scoring Friday night (Oct. 11) with a huge
47-yard bomb from senior quarterback DANNY RODRIGUEZ
to senior receiver JOHN TODD, as the No. 8 ranked Highlanders
were temporarily stunned in the Grossmont Hills League
opener.
Rodriguez faked a play-action handoff, then took a
deep drop before unloading the high aerial down the
right hashmark. Todd already had two steps on his defender
when he caught the heave, which traveled nearly 50 yards
in the air, and he coasted in from just outside the
5 for the 7-0 lead. Running back ELIJAH BELL provided
the necessary extra protection on the long-developing
play.
Valhalla extended that opening-scoring drive midway
through the first quarter, as protection back FABIAN
YAKOU took the snap on a fake punt on fourth-and-2 and
rushed right to the mark at the Helix 49.
Helix's first scoring drive came in the second quarter
and was highlighted by several gains by sophomore running
back ADRIAN PETTY. DERRICK CLARK then powered in from
3 yards out, but the point-after-try failed.
Rodriguez connected with senior ISAIAH EDWARDS for
a first down completion to spur Valhalla 's ensuing
drive, then the Norsemen converted on a fourth-down
near midfield. EAN HENDRICKSON boomed a 40-yard field
goal for a 10-6 lead.
The Highlanders took the lead in the game 13-10 when
MICHAEL AUSTIN ran a bootleg for a long touchdown on
a fourth-and-two play at the Valhalla 43. Earlier on
the drive, on a 3rd-and-6 at the Helix 37, AARON HARDIN
caught a 14-yard pass from Austin to the Valhalla 49.
Austin faked a handoff to his tailback, and the sophomore
rolled back to the left side, sprinting for the corner
and outrunning a defender to reach the end zone.
Valhalla wasn't done putting a scare into the Highlanders,
as Todd hauled in a 28-yard pass from Rodriguez, as
the quarterback laid the ball perfectly down the right
sideline.
However, Helix senior linebacker RUEBEN LEASAU intercepted
a pass on the next play and returned it 61 yards for
a touchdown, as Helix ended up taking a 20-10 lead into
the locker room.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Leasau stepped in front of
the pass, which was intended for a crossing receiver.
He motored back into Valhalla territory, breaking a
tackle at the 40, then picked up a block from teammate
JABRION BURNSIDE, before receiving a convoy of teammates
the rest of the way.
Helix scored on its opening drive of the third quarter
after holding Valhalla to a three-and-out. Austin hit
JALEN DAVIS with a 25-yard corner route down the left
side to the Norsemen 16. From there, Austin converted
the drive to Davis, who caught a short pass over the
middle and slid between two defenders for the score,
putting Helix up 26-10.
Rodriguez completed a pair of passes on the next drive,
as Edwards fought for yardage on a 10-yard reception,
then Todd gained 20 on a catch out to midfield. JAKE
BASSETTE caught another strike down to the 31 for another
first down, but the drive stalled as Helix blocked a
50-yard field goal attempt.
Helix took advantage of a short field for a scoring
drive late in the third. Austin found Hardin on the
left side for a 7-yard pass as the Highlanders quickly
beat a blitz.
Edwards excited the crowd one more time on the ensuing
kickoff when he split the seam right through the Helix
pursuit for a 62-yard return.
Valhalla's certain last stand was thwarted by a 3rd-and-1
run by Clark, as a sure dive play turned into a 29-yard
burst by the sophomore.
After the Scotties trailed 10-7, they held the Norsemen
scoreless for the remainder of the contest, led by defenders
ISAIAH YOUNG, JALEN WYATT and CHRISTIAN CHAVEZ.
XAVIER TUITELE had a sack in the first half for the
Highlanders, while teammate MIKE FAJARDO wrapped one
up in the third quarter and MICHAEL BENJAMIN recorded
an interception. FORREST HANLON forced a fumble on a
sack deep in Valhalla territory in the fourth quarter,
as Helix took over on the 3.
DASHAWN KEIRSEY entered the game for Helix at quarterback
and ran it in from the 3 on a fake-handoff keeper with
6:38 left in the game.
GUISEPPE CASTANOS had a tackle-for-loss in the third
quarter for Valhalla.

MONTE VISTA 46, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 The
El Cajon Valley Braves were hoping for a homecoming
spectacular Friday night (Oct. 11) with a win to open
Grossmont Valley League play, only to be left stunned
in heavy disappointment.
"We thought we would come in here with a great
battle, considering the wins El Cajon had against the
likes of Orange Glen and San Ysidro," said Monarchs
coach RON HAMAMOTO.
Well that definitely turned out to be false as the
Monarchs established their reality of being a heavy
contender for a playoff spot from the very beginning.
From offense to defense the Monarchs were on a mission,
with a small hiccup early on the first offensive drive
as quarterback THOMAS WALKER let the pigskin slip from
his grasp and into Braves defender DAMAJE HODGES
arms for their first and only turnover.
But with the hard-hitting force of the Monte Vista
defense, moving the ball for the hosts was not gonna
happen. The Braves game plan was to start their
usual heavy dose of running back MATTHEW SHEARIN, who
was held to 4 yards on 6 carries. He would only play
a snap or two before he was helped off the field to
start the third quarter. With Monte Vista leading 38-0
early in the third quarter, this was devastating to
the Braves. Shearin would not return.

El Cajon Valley is wrapped up by Monte Vista
junior Josh Castenda (35).

Before intermission, Monarchs big defensive back
D.J. DOSIER would compile two interceptions for 84 yards
and a walk-in touchdown, along with the previous 6-yard
dandy Dosier hauled in from Walker a series earlier.
He also returned a punt 43 yards.
The Monarchs have now won four in a row, with three
of them on visiting turf to improve to 4-3 overall and
1-0 in league play. With this intensity there could
very well be a playoff surprise, along with the huge
bout with Mount Miguel next week.
The Monarchs finished the demolition of the Braves
46-0, although not without loss, losing running back
CARLOS QUEVEDO was carted off the field via ambulance
with a dislocated knee, upon a broken up play with 1:05
left in the third quarter.
Monte Vista running back JAQUI MORRIS made the most
of 5 carries as he gobbled up 72 yards and scored 2
touchdowns.

Luckily, unlike a difficult loss at Mission Bay, all
three units from Christian stepped forward to secure
a 49-3 romp in its Central League opener Friday (Oct.
11) at Neidermeyer Stadium.
The Pats defense forced a quick 3-and-out, forcing
Coronado to settle for a field goal, then Christian
(6-1 overall) answered with seven unanswered touchdowns
to coast for the easy victory along the Silver Strand.
While the defense held Coronado to a mere 180 yards
in total offense, Patriots running back PARIS MILLER
rumbled on scoring rushes covering 31 and 43 yards for
a 14-3 advantage. Miller finished with 81 yards on just
four carries.
Quarterback MICHAEL CARRILLO followed with a pair of
touchdown passes. He found ZANE COFFMAN wide open on
a screen pass from 13 yards out, then NICK SEXTON made
an acrobatic catch with a defender all over him on a
27-yard score.
And when senior linebacker TRENTON SAULS stripped the
ball from a Coronado ball-carrier in the backfield,
his 58-yard runback made it 35-3 at the intermission.
Carrillo (8-12-0, 127 yards) found TREVOR HOWELL on
a 4-yard pass to cap the opening drive of the second
half, initiating a running clock at 42-3.
KAI ARVAN paced Patriots receivers with three grabs
for 78 yards. JOEY MORONES capped the rout with a TD
on a 4-yard rush.
On defense, SEBASTIAN SWIFT registered 12 tackles (
6 solo), while DREW SCOTT posted a sack.
Coronado quarterback Robby Weissenfels left the game
in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury. The
two-way performer is the son of former Navy standout
defensive back Bob Weissenfels, who helped the Midshipmen
to victory in the 1989 Navy-Army game with a key interception
in an 18-16 victory at Giants Stadium.

FEARLESS FORECASTER Predictions

Helix, El Capitan, Christian
to become league championss
1. As a rule a league championship is decided on the
final encounter of the season. That wont be the
case in the Grossmont Valley League as Mount Miguel
visits El Capitan on Friday (Oct. 11) in a winner-takes-all
match-up at 7 p.m.
The host and No. 10 ranked Vaqueros are unbeaten in
six starts. But Mount Miguel has won the last three
league titles.
Sounds like a pretty good match-up to me. Too bad the
title will be decided on opening night. Of course that
wont make it any easier for either team.
The unbeaten Vaqueros will look to quarterback junior
BRAD CAGLE (242.3 yards per game average) to direct
El Capitan to the league title. This is a unit that
also includes running back D.J. SMITH, who is certain
to run wild, ISAIAH CAPOOCIA, who will use his speed
to test the Matadors quickness, and receiver SCOTT
ROOT who has been injured lately but should be at full
strength come game time.

Mount Miguel (4-2) is also talent laden with plenty of
speed to keep stride with the Vaqueros.
The key nuggets for the Matadors are quarterback BRAD
MORENO (190 ypg, 6 TDs), running back BEN LOMIBAO, who
has come into his own, averaging 95 yards per carry
and 9 TDs.
However, receivers JOVON RICHARDSON and DAVAUGHN MURRAY
are big-time targets for Moreno.
Defense is probably the Matadors strength. Division
I prospect Murray and middle linebacker MIRACLE TAUSAGA
are the anchors of the unit. Not to be overlooked are
linebackers RASHAD TATE and TRAVIS DALY.
This is a championship game too bad its
in the opening round... El Capitan 32-26.
3. MONTE VISTA: After a slow start the Monarchs have
picked up the momentum as they look to running backs
JEMIEL JACKON, TONY WALKER and LEE WADE to pick up the
pace at the expense of the Braves... Monte Vista
2820.
4. EL CAJON VALLEY: The Braves are loaded with skill
players but are hurting in the trenches, which could
determine their fate. Theyve pulled a few upsets
along the way, but making the playoffs might be out
of reach. Escaping the cellar would be a realized goal
for the Braves.
5. SANTANA: The Sultans have been outscored 202-36,
which doesnt add up to many victories for Santana.
So escaping last place is unlikely.

GROSSMONT HILLS LEAGUE
1. HELIX: When it comes to championships, no team has
a larger compilation of them than Helix. This may not
be the best band of Highlanders, but coach TROY STARRs
crew always seem to come up with the victory combination.
The Highlanders are a defensive laden team, led by
versatile JALEN DAVIS. The Highlanders are heavy favorites
in Fridays (Oct. 11) game at Valhalla... Helix
42-7.
2. GROSSMONT: Quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE is one of
the top passers in the San Diego Section, which should
make the Foothillers bona fide challengers for the GHL
title.
The Hillers will get a chance to prove that at Granite
Hills in the league opener.,, Grossmont 35-14.
3. STEELE CANYON: No team in East County has played
a tougher schedule than the Cougars have. Thus they
should be the dark horse to capture the GHL.
4. WEST HILLS: This is a battle for third place and
both teams think theyre worthy of being third.
Give the nod to... Steele Canyon 21-17.

5. GRANITE HILLS: The Eagles are vastly improved over
last year but will they have the muscle to cause an uprising
in the GHL? Not likely... theyll prove that against
Grossmont.
6. VALHALLA: The Norsemen (1-4) are used to running
with the elite but so far thats not the case this
year. Thus they are overmatched in a rebuilding league.
CENTRAL LEAGUE
1. CHRISTIAN: The Patriots have a lot of weapons. They
are an offensive powerhouse, but whether they can put
up enough points to turn back their competition remains
to be seen.
Not many teams can score more points than Christian,
led by quarterback MICHAEL CARRILLO and his bevy of
receivers.
The title in this league will probably come down to
a duel with University City or Clairemont, but first
they must get past Coronado... Christian 38-18.

Morones (44) and
Hunter Arvan (18)

The Patriots are
projected to take
the Central League
championship. (Photo by Ramon Scott)
