Where the big dogs bark.
A super playoff division that was created this season
to crown the best of the best football programs in the
San Diego Section.
It wasnt supposed to be this easy for the Scotties.
But it was!
Behind the play of sophomores MICHAEL AUSTIN, NATHAN STINSON
and DERRICK CLARK not to mention a stellar defensive
effort No. 4-seeded Helix (9-2) rolled to a 41-7
victory over No. 5 La Costa Canyon (7-4) on Friday night
(Nov. 15) at Jim Arnaiz Field.

We felt like we were the underdogs in this one,
said Clark , whose three second-half touchdowns turned
this game into a lopsided boat race. A lot of people
doubted us.
Clark never touched the ball in the first half but wound
up with a game ball afterward.
Subbing for Stinson, who had to leave the game with
leg cramps early in the third quarter, Clark led the
Highlanders with 93 rushing yards on 16 carries, including
two short touchdown runs and one magnificent 42-yard
scoring reception.
Stinson handled the rushing load in the first half,
finishing with 81 yards on 14 carries, including one
short scoring run and an impressive 10-yard TD reception.
Austin was equally effective, completing 15-of-23 passes
for 219 yards and three touchdowns without an interception
or a sack.
Senior statesman JALEN DAVIS, who had six catches for
91 yards, warned his younger teammates that things promise
to get tougher in the next round when Helix squares off
against No. 1-seed Mission Hills (10-1) next Friday (Nov.
22) in a semifinal matchup at Mission Hills.
Were going to have to have a good week
of practice, Davis said. We played well
tonight, but we have to clean up our little mistakes.
We have to make sure we work hard all week.
Open Division
MISSION HILLS 56, STEELE CANYON 35 The
Cougars' LAWRENCE DICKENS had a memorable night
that he would probably rather forget, as Steele
Canyon lost its San Diego CIF Open Division playoff
opener, falling for the sixth time in seven games
to close the season.
Dickens had five touchdowns on the evening, catching
five passes for 237 yards and three scores, while
rushing seven times for 40 yards and two scores.
Dickens' 19-yard touchdown run gave the top-seeded
Cougars an early 7-0 lead, but the Grizzlies countered
with a 1-yard keeper by quarterback Connor Wynn.
The Grizzlies' Wynn had four touchdown passes,
including a 23-yarder to DeChaun Holiday that
put the hosts up 14-7 with 5:48 left in the second
quarter.
Dickens caught at short pass from quarterback
DOMINIC WOOD and turned it into an 80-yard catch-and-run
score to make it 14-14.
However, Wynn would answer with a 22-yard touchdown
pass to Martrel Holmes with 1:38 left before halftime.
The key momentum swing would come moments later,
as the Mission Hills defense stopped the Cougars
on fourth down at its own 39 with 1:15 left. That
would be plenty of time for Wynn, who completed
the first-half scoring on a 31-yard TD pass to
Holiday with :31 left.
Dickens scored on a 7-yard run with 10:45 left
in the third, then Steele Canyon recorded its
second blocked field goal of the night with 4:27
to go in the quarter.
The next drive was foiled, however, when Mission
Hills recovered a high snap and took advantage
of the good field position when Wynn found Scott
Higgins for a 20-yard score.
Dickens caught a 68-yard bomb from Wood on the
next drive, pulling the Cougars and the momentum
to within 35-27 with 1:26 left in the third quarter.
Ricky Liuchan scored on a 6-yard touchdown for
the Grizzlies with 10:12 left in the game, then
cornerback Esteban Senteno scored on a 25-yard
interception return to make 49-27.
Mission Hills (10-1) won its fourth straight
game and will host Helix in the semifinals next
Friday (Nov. 22).
Wynn completed 15-of-24 passes for 237 yards
and five touchdowns, and he also ran for a score.
Steele Canyon's ALEX WILEY blocked a field goal
attempt in the first quarter.
Dickens, who is looking at Harvard or Yale as
possibilities to expand his education and playing
time, also added 93 yards on four kickoff returns
for good measure.
This was one of his best games, no doubt
about it, said Cougars coach SCOTT LONGERBONE
of Dickens. He was catching the ball over
the middle and shedding tacklers left and right.
Wood finished by completing 11 of 17 passes for
282 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Steele Canyon finished the season with a 3-8
record, which included 5 losses by a total of
11 points.
Grizzlies quarterback Wynn made his seventh playoff
start, and his experience in post-season play
was obvious.
They were a veteran team across the board,
Longerbone confirmed.
Before Fridays game, La Costa Canyon coach Sean
Sovacool talked about how it would take a total team
effort to beat Helix.
We have to play team football to beat these guys,
Sovacool said. They dont. They can win with
their individuals. When they play as a team, theyre
awfully dangerous.
Indeed, Helix played as a team.
We played really well against a good team,
Helix coach TROY STARR said. I have a feeling
they were a little flat after their big win against
Torrey Pines last week. Thats tough to do, come
into the playoffs after winning a huge rivalry game
the week before.
Theyre a quality team. We were just able
to make some plays.
Clark produced the best of those plays.
Taking a short shuffle pass from Austin late in the third
quarter from the 42-yard line, Clark scooted around the
defense for about 20 yards, broke a couple tackles and
then appeared to be taken down around the 20-yard line.
Instead, he rolled over the defender and managed to pop
himself up with his right hand, landing on his feet. After
a brief pause, he realized he wasnt downed and waltzed
into the end zone for a 28-0 lead.
I just followed my blocks at first, Clark
said. When I rolled off somebodys chest
and found myself still standing, I just headed toward
the end zone.
But Clark wasnt done.
He scored on a 3-yard run minutes later, and on Helixs
final scoring drive, Clark carried all eight plays for
55 yards and a 1-yard score.
However I can help the team, Clark said.
Thats what Ill do.
Many people believed this was the best matchup on the
first night of the sections new six-division playoff
format, and for the first 15 minutes it was a slugfest.
After six punts and a fumble recovery by the Scotties
JOSEPH TAUANUU, Helix finally changed the scoreboard
with 8:25 left in the second quarter.
Stinson capped a 10-play, 55-yard drive with a 6-yard
touchdown run, and MARCUS NORRIS converted the first
of his five PAT points to make it 7-0.
On Helixs next offensive play, Austin hit a wide-open
Davis for a 67-yard pickup that set up a 10-yard TD
by Stinson on a shuffle pass from Austin with 1:49 before
intermission.
To that point, La Costa Canyon had but two first downs
and 44 total yards. Then quarterback Jake Mann rushed
51 yards for a first down that set up a 41-yard field-goal
attempt by Mason Bright. As time expired in the half,
the left-footed Brights kick was long enough but
sailed just wide of the left upright.
Trailing 14-0, LCC tried an onside kick to start the
second half, but after Helix recovered, Stinson took
the first play for 29 yards to set up a 7-yard TD pass
from Austin to AARON HARDIN, who finished with three
catches for 23 yards.
Clarks highlight touchdown catch-and-run-and-roll-and-run
late in the third quarter made it 28-0. Clarks
next TD made it 34-0.
The Mavericks avoided the shutout on their ensuing
possession as Mann hit Hunter Hogencamp for a 13-yard
TD pass play, but Helix answered with another scoring
drive to close it 41-7.
Actually, Helix could easily have tacked on one more
score. Starting at first-and-goal from the 6-yard line
with 2:20 to play, Starr had backup quarterback DASHAWN
KEIRSEY take a few knees to run out the clock. Earlier
in the quarter, Keirsey caught three straight passes
for 37 yards to set up Clarks third TD.
A desperate La Costa team tacked on some yardage in
the fourth quarter, but otherwise the Highlanders
defense was dominant. The Mavericks managed 231 yards
but only seven first downs.
It was a big night on both sides of the ball,
Austin said. After that first quarter, we felt
like we were really clicking on offense. Our preparation
helped us out a lot this week.
As young as we are, this was a big win for us.

The outcome was similar to the first meeting as No.
5 seeded Grossmont (9-2) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in
the first half and cruised to a 35-6 pasting of No.
12 Otay Ranch (8-3).
It was also another record-setting night for Foothillers
quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE. A week after setting the
section record for passing yardage, Lawrence added another
major record to his resume' when he found HUNTER REINER
on a 15-yard touchdown to start the second half. With
Lawrence's third TD of the night, he now stands atop
the section in all-time TD passes with 93.
The Foothillers start was much like the weather...
a little sloppy. Otay was clogging up the middle and
the 'Hillers high flying arial attack was grounded
until early in the 2nd quarter. That's when head coach
TOM KARLO's senior quarterback took over.
Up 7-0 in the second quarter, Lawrence found wideout
J.T. BARNES from the 11-yard line and Grossmont took
a 14-0 advantage.

The biggest chain of events took place right before
the end of the half. An Otay drive stalled, forcing
a punt to the Foothiller 15-yard line with only 1:10
left in the half. Lawrence would need only 60 seconds.
He strung together pass plays of 30, 16, 6, and 8 yards
to advance the ball to the Otay 25-yard line.
Then with only 9.9 seconds left, ALIJAH AVANT made
a circus catch down the middle to complete a 25-yard
touchdown and a 21-0 halftime score.
"We know we can score in a hurry," Karlo
said. "And Alijah made a heckuva catch."
Grossmont would also get the ball to start the 2nd
half. This time it would take only 32 seconds to up
the ante to 28-0 with Lawrence finding Reiner on the
record breaker.
"That TD right before the half really gave us
some momentum and we kept it going in the 2nd half,"
said Lawrence .
With the game in hand, Lawrence finished off the Foothillers
scoring when he found Barnes streaking down the far
sideline for a 65-yard scoring strike.
"We thought when we looked at the tape that we
might have to throw mostly short stuff," Barnes
said. "But I was able to get behind the defender
and Anthony put it on the money."
"Otay was pretty physical and we were a little
sloppy early on," Lawrence stated. "We need
to avoid that next time out."
That would be in the quarterfinals on Thursday (Nov.21)
at No. 4 seed Carlsbad.

Division 2
WEST HILLS 31, SCRIPPS RANCH 17 The Falcons
thought they had sent an early message with a 92-yard
touchdown run in the game's opening minute, but
the host Wolf Pack responded with 24-straight points,
and that provided the cushion to advance out of
Friday's (Nov. 15) first-round Division II San Diego
CIF matchup in Santee.
NOAH YLAGAN's 4-yard touchdown run midway through
the first quarter tied the score at 7-7.
Early in the second at the Falcons' 5, senior
DANIEL McMANUS went in motion to the right, took
the inside handoff, got a cutback block from Ylagan,
and turned it up to the goal line, crashing into
a defender and into the endzone, giving West Hills
the lead.
The Wolf Pack added another score when Ylagan
took a delayed pass against a hard-rushing Scripps
defense, and found himself in the open near the
Falcons' 25. He had to break out of a near wrap-up,
but from there he went untouched for a two-score
lead.
Late in the second quarter, McManus booted a
41-yard field goal to send the Wolf Pack into
the locker room ahead, 24-14. The successful boot
broke the section record for consecutive field
goals with 10, snapping a 20-year mark.
People forget what a great kicker McManus
is, said West Hills coach TAY SNEDDON. In
this game he also kicked 5 touchbacks.
The Falcons would close the first half scoring
on a 4-yard touchdown run, however the Wolf Pack
defense kept the visitors out of the end zone
after halftime, as the West Hills "Honey
Badger" defense was led by junior CONNOR
FINNESTAD, and seniors PEANUT HERRADA, RYDEN KERR,
E.J. GARCIA and SEAN OLSZANOWSKI.
In my opinion, Kerr has to be best linebacker
in the league, Sneddon noted.
D.J. LEWIS returned to the lineup for the Pack
after missing three games with injuries.
He definitely makes a difference,
said Sneddon of Lewis, who is headed to Kansas
State on a baseball scholarship.
In the third quarter, the Wolf Pack capitalized
on a muffed return, as quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER
capped a short drive by punching it in from 1-yard
out, increasing the lead to 17.
Seventh-seeded West Hills (8-3) advances to the
Division II quarterfinals Thursday (Nov. 21) at
Mesa College to face No. 2-seeded St. Augustine
(8-2)..
EL CAPITAN 45, DEL NORTE 21 The Vaqueros
(10-1) took a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter by
scoring three touchdowns in less than four minutes en
route to a Division II San Diego CIF opening-round victory
over the visiting Nighthawks (5-6) Friday (Nov. 15).
The Vaqueros opening drive took up nearly half of the
first quarter, but they came up empty. Finally, El Capitan's
BRAD CAGLE spun in on a keeper for the game's first score
with 3:21 left in the opening quarter.
On the ensuing drive, ISAIAH CAPOOCIA recorded an interception
when the receiver bobbled a pass at the El Capitan 47.
The junior defensive back quickly gathered the ball
and returned it 43 yards to the Del Norte 4. CHRIS PEARSON
later got the call from the 1 and powered in behind
linemen PATRICK GOLDEN and ROBERT DELOZIER, as well
as fullback DANNY IBARRA.
In the opening stages of the second quarter, Capoocia
caught a quick screen to the left from Cagle, slipped
through defenders just past the 50, then slashed back
to the middle, then right side of the field, resulting
in a 48-yard score. Along the way, he got blocks from
SCOTT ROOT and JOSH BROOKS to spring him into the clear
to the right pylon.
Del Norte would get as close as it would the rest of
the way early in the third, when Patrick Zeller caught
a 24-yard TD pass from Parker Lappin to make it 24-14
with just a little over 1:30 into the second half. The
duo also hooked up for a 15-yard score in the second
quarter.
El Capitan answered with a passing touchdown from Cagle
to Capoocia from 8 yards out to go back up by 17. The
pair connected on six passes on the night, good for
116 yards. Cagle finished with 275 yards through the
air.
Ibarra added a 5-yard score in the fourth quarter before
Lappin threw his third touchdown of the game, this one
to Quentin Meeks, for the Nighthawks to close to within
38-21 with six minutes remaining.
Capoocia capped off his big night with under five minutes
left in the fourth, as he ripped off a 51-yard touchdown
run for his third score of the game. This time, he lined
up in the left slot, countered back through the backfield,
got a sealing block from PERRY WINKLER, and turned up
the right hash before putting on the burners to spring
through a tired defense.
No. 6-seeded El Capitan plays at No. 3-seed Imperial
(10-0), with record-setting running back Royce Freeman,
next Thursday (Nov. 21).
El Capitan junior TAKOTA CURO booted a field goal from
25 yards away as the gun sounded at the end of the first
half.
Del Norte's leading rusher, Marc Gallant, tried to
go on a sprained ankle, but left the game after just
three rushes.
The Vaqueros held Del Norte to 25 yards rushing in
the first half, and 87 for the evening.
Quarterback Brad Cagle finished the evening by completing
20 of 36 for 279 and 2 touchdowns for the Vaqueros,
who have set a school record with 495 points in 11 games.
What makes that total so impressive is the Vaqueros
have had to overcome several injuries including the
loss of two-way starter D.J. SMITH in late season action.
But this is no one-man show, as the Vaqueros proved
against Del Norte. Capoocia caught 6 passes for 115
yards and 2 touchdowns. Pearson also caught a scoring
pass from Cagle.
Capoocia proved his overall talent as he rushed for
64 yards and a touchdown on only four carries.
Cagle, Pearson and Ibarra also scored touchdowns for
El Capitan . For good measure Capoocia also picked off
a pass and returned it 30 yards.
Weve been through a lot of adversity all
season, said El Capitan coach RON BURNER. We
lost arguably our best player on both sides of the ball
when Smith went down.

Some might say that the Eagles (6-5) made it look easy
when they eliminated Bonita Vista 28-14 in the first round
of Division 3III playoff action.
The No. 8 seeded Eagles, who last won a post-season
playoff game 10-7 over Chula Vista in 1985, did all
of their scoring in the first half of Fridays
(Nov. 15) opening round of post-season play.
Granite Hills jumped on top on the first play of the
game when CHRIS MEREDITH threw a 66-yard touchdown pass
to MICHAEL LADESMA. And the Eagles continued on from
there to claim a 28-14 victory over the Bonita Vista
Barons (5-6).
After Bonita Vista fought back for a 14-7 lead late
in the first quarter, the Eagles tied the contest on
the first play of the second quarter when SETH COLLINS
galloped 41 yards to paydirt to make it 14-all.
Granite Hills put the game away with two more scoring
strikes in the second quarter as Meredith threw a 6-yard
scoring toss to JOSH LONGBRAKE, and Collins suckered
the Barons by taking a run and then throwing a 51-yard
scoring pass to MICHAEL LADESMA.
While it might appear that the Granite Hills offense
carried the load, that would be unfair to the Eagles
defense, which put the brakes to the Barons all night
long.

Note: From 1992-2000, Barons went
winless in 8 games; previous win was 1980 over Escondido.
Junior Ladesma caught touchdown passes of 66 and 51 yards.
We used a lot of crack back fakes to make things
work for us, he said. Once we scored on
a pass over the middle and the other one we scored on
a read option.
Meredith completed 6 of 10 passes for 130 yards and
2 touchdowns. Collins was 4 for 6 throwing the ball,
adding up to 78 yards and one score for Granite Hills.
The top receiver was Ladesma, who caught 4 passes for
142 yards.
While Granite Hills waited 27 years for its first postseason
triumph, Bonita Vista owns just two CIF wins since 1980
first round wins in 2001 and 2005 a 330-year
span.

A
total of 31 sportswriters, sportscasters and CIF
representatives from throughout the county vote
in the weekly poll. This year's panel includes:
John Maffei, Craig Malveaux, Dennis Lin, Don Norcross,
Lisa Lane and Andrew Bruer (U-T San Diego), Steve
Brand, Terry Monahan, Bill Dickens, Tom Saxe and
Rick Hoff (U-T San Diego stringers), Nick Pellegrino
(East County Sports.com), Steve Dolan and Rick Hill
(107.9 FM/The Mountain), Ernie Martinez (XTRA Sports

Bob Petinak, Jordan Carruth, Bobby Wooldridge and
Mark Chlebowski (The Mighty 1090), Rick Willis,
Brandon Stone and Jake Fadden (KUSI-TV), Craig Elsten

Jeff Kurtz (playonsports), Jerry Schniepp, John
Labeta (CIF San Diego Section office), Bruce Ward
(SD City Schools).
In a battle of teams that are used to participating in
the playoffs, this could be a good one at Jim Arnaiz Field
at 7 p.m.
Fifth-seeded La Costa Canyon (7-3) is probably one
of the stealth powerhouses against a Helix team that
has pounded out an 8-2 record.
The 4th-seeded Highlanders are hard to figure because
you dont know if theyre going to pass or
run. They are definitely capable of doing both.
Sophomore quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN has come on to
be a marksman for Helix, completing 93 of 165 passes
for 1241 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Not to be overlooked is newcomer NATHAN STINSON, who
has rushed for 551 yards and 3 touchdowns on 66 carries.
But the Helix talent level doesnt stop there.
Versatile JALEN DAVIS is all over the field but is most
deadly on kick and punt returns and interceptions.
So this is a pickem, but the nod here goes to...
Helix 24-21.
(9) BONITA VISTA at (8) GRANITE HILLS
Appearing in the playoffs used to be old had for Granite
Hills, but lately that hasnt been the case. The
last time the Eagles appeared in post-season play was
against Carlsbad in 2011, which resulted in a 49-7 loss.
This year the Eagles (5-5) are a more balanced team
than in the past few years. Some might say the same
for Bonita Vista (4-6).
The point man for Granite Hills is running back JESSE
BISBAL, hwo is averaging 94 yards and has scored 10
touchdowns in nine games. His sidekick SETH COLLINS
is pretty good too. He has compiled 493 yards
and 7 touchdowns on 75 carries.
CHRIS MEREDITH will be the quarterback for the Eagles
when they collide with the Barons (4-6) on Friday (Nov.
15) in the Division III San Diego CIF first round.
The Eagles primary receiver is JOSH LONGBRAKE, who
has 32 catches on 558 yards for 5 touchdowns.
This is a cliffhanger which could go either way but
our bet goes to... Granite Hills 17-14.
(12) OTAY RANCH at (5) GROSSMONT The
Foothillers (8-2), who are averaging 47.3 points per
game, should turn Fridays (Nov. 15) Division I
San Diego CIF playoff opener into a runaway.
Led by San Diego CIF record-breaking quarterback ANTHONY
LAWRENCE, the Foothillers should be able to corral the
Mustangs (3-7).
Earlier in the season Grossmont pulverized Otay Ranch
45-7, and it shouldnt be much different this time
around.
With receivers CHRISTIAN BROOKS and J.T. BARNES, Lawrence
is loaded with quality blue-chips that the Mustangs
cant cover.
The Grossmont running game is a little bit shaky but
should be bolstered by the return of JOSH ANDERSON...
Grossmont 40-16.
(8) STEELE CANYON at (1) MISSION HILLS
When it comes to hard luck, Steele Canyon could provide
the team picture this season.
The Cougars (3-7) have lost seven games by a total
of 18 points, which has to concern the top-ranked Grizzlies
(9-1) in Fridays (Nov. 15) first round of the
San Diego CIF Open Division.
So its time for an upset for the Cougars, led
by quarterback DOMINIC WOOD and his speedy receivers
LAWRENCE DICKENS and MARKELL LINDLEY.
Defense of course has always been a Steele Canyon strong
suit and it should be again this week. So dont
look for the Cougars to fold against the Grizzlies.
In their regular season final of the Grossmont Hills
League the Cougars lost on a snap over the kickers
head in a 14-13 setback. Against Grossmont the Cougars
lost 21-19 when the Foothillers turned back a 2-point
conversion by a foot, that would have tied the game.
Reaching even earlier in the schedule Vista beat Steele
Canyon 8-6, so its been a rough road for the Cougars.
So theres no sure thing in this match-up, but
we have to go with the higher seed... Mission
Hills 17-13.
(10) SCRIPPS RANCH at (7) WEST HILLS
This is certainly a winnable game for the Wolf Pack,
which split two playoff games a year ago.
Given that the Wolf Pack (7-3) has played in the rugged
Grossmont Hills League should give them the nod against
Scripps Ranch (6-4) in Fridays (Nov. 15) Division
II San Diego CIF opener.
Defense is West Hills strength, but the Wolf
Pack led by quarterback STEPHEN SCHINDLER, should also
provide enough offense to send the Falcons home... West
Hills 21-14.
(11) DEL NORTE at (6) EL CAPITAN Only
previous injuries could deny El Capitan a victory in
Fridays (Nov. 15) Division II San Diego CIF opener
against visiting Del Norte.
Due to late season injuries among the ranks, Vaqueros
coach RON BURNER has had to play shuffle with his offensive
backfield. That certainly wont make it easier
for Del Norte when watching previous game films of the
9-1 Vaqueros.
The key to El Capitan s success will be quarterback
BRAD CAGLE, who has passed for 2546 yards and 26 touchdowns.
These teams have never played before but give the nod
to the Vaqueros... El Capitan 21-20.
(12) EL CAJON VALLEY at (5) MATER DEI CATHOLIC
The return of versatile MATTHEW SHEARIN gives
the El Cajon Valley Braves a clean shot at an upset
in Fridays (Nov. 15) first round of the Division
IV San Diego CIF playoffs.
Although injured late in the season, Shearin has regained
his footing and averages 116 yards rushing per game.
He is the key to the Braves chances of advancing.
This is not a passing team, so the Braves (2-7) must
count on their ground game to move to the next level.
Mater Dei Catholic leads the all-time series between
these teams 3-1, but there is one glaring challenge:
the Crusaders were beaten by El Capitan 44-0, while
El Cajon Valley lost to El Capitan 48-7.
Sounds like a close one... Mater Dei Catholic
28-26.
