Lawrence continues to re-write record book,
gains pass yardage mark in pasting West Hills

SANTEE (11-9-13) — While Imperial High's Royce Freeman has been busy rewriting the CIF San Diego section history books for running backs, Grossmont High's ANTHONY LAWRENCE has been doing a little writing of his own.

On Friday (Nov.8) the senior quarterback was poised to place his name atop the all-time list for passing yards in the San Diego section. Needing only 48 yards, Lawrence found CHRISTIAN BROOKS over the middle for 20 yards early in the second quarter to vault into the top spot.

Other Views
Lawrence would finish 20-25 for 280 yards and five touchdowns for the game as Grossmont pounded host West Hills, 48-6.

The Foothillers would score on 3 of the 5 full series in the first half, and all of the drives in the 2nd half, with the 4th quarter played under a running clock.

Grossmont marched 71 yards on its first drive, culminating in an 8-yard Lawrence hook-up with Brooks. The big play on the drive was a 15-yard burst up the middle by JAKE HARR.

Following two stalled drives, the Foothillers (8-2, 4-1 GHL) would score touchdowns on their next six full possessions.

After breaking the passing record early in the 2nd, Lawrence next gave the 'Hillers a 14-0 lead on an 18-yard pass play to ALIJAH AVANT (4 catches, 66 yards, 2 TD).

But Lawrence was just getting started. He revisited Brooks (7-111 2 TDs) with 50 seconds left in the half. He lofted a pass in between two defenders as Brooks glided under it from 25 yards out.

Bad enough that Grossmont scored right before the half to make it 21-0. They also got the ball to start the 2nd half.

Now it was Avant's turn again. On 2nd down and a yard to go from the 32, Lawrence threw his 4th TD to Avant and the rout was on.

Up 28-0, Avant thought he'd try something new. On a drive that started with JOSH ANDERSON'S 23-yard rush, Avant ran in his 3rd TD of the night from 11 yards out.

Lawrence found JT BARNES for his 5th touchdown on the night and mercifully the scoring ended on 2-yard plunge by DJ HILL.

"Breaking the record is amazing", Lawrence said. "I wasn't really sure at first, but they announced over the loud speaker and I knew it then. But this is secondary to our ultimate goal… a championship".

‘Hillers head coach TOM KARLO had praise for his quarterback beyond the record. "The remarkable thing about Anthony is his complete understanding of the system we run. "He has free reign on every play and we trust his reads completely."

With playoff pairings coming out Saturday Nov.9), Grossmont might just have locked up a top 4 seed in Division I. West Hills fell to 7-3 overll (3-2 GHL).

RANCHO SAN DIEGO (11-9-13) — With the thought of a three-way tie in the back of their minds, the Helix Highlanders made sure they came out as solo champions of the Grossmont Hills League by slipping past host Steele Canyon, 14-13, Friday (Nov. 8) night.

This also was a milestone victory for Helix coach TROY STARR, who rolled his high school record to 200-46, thanks to an errant extra point snap by the hard luck Cougars.

The playoff pairings will be announced on Saturday (Nov. 9), and the Grossmont Hills League champion Highlanders figure to earn a decent seed in the Open Division.

“Reaching this point in the season is one of our goals,” Starr said.

Helix was fortunate to escape Steele Canyon with a win, however.

The Cougars (3-7, 1-4 GHL) put together a 16-play, 75-yard scoring drive that concluded with quarterback DOMINIC WOOD scoring on a 9-yard run.

Before the Cougars could catch their breath, NATHAN STINSON returned the ensuing kickoff 79 yards to tie the game with less than a second to play in the quarter.

Neither team scored in the second or third quarters.

The Highlanders finally took the lead as quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN scrambled 53 yards for a touchdown that also accompanied a PAT kick by MARCUS NORRIS that made it 14-7.

Steele Canyon wasn’t finished quite yet as XAVIER GOODLOE wrestled a 31-yard completion from the Highlanders’ JALEN DAVIS.

Wood then fired a 15-yard completion to JORDAN JOHNSON. Wood went to the air again three plays later and hit Goodloe with a 19-yard scoring pass.

But Steele Canyon ’s special teams, which were a problem all night long, committed a back-breaking error, denying the potential tying PAT kick by snapping the ball over the kicker’s head, leaving Helix with the final margin of victory.

Stinson led the Helix offense with 117 yards on 21 carries.

After Helix secured the victory, Starr’s players and fans surrounded him with various mementos of posters and photos marking the big night.

Although subtly pleased with his latest milestone, Starr was more interested in praising his team for capturing their fourth straight undefeated league championship.

“I’m not a self-promoting kind of guy,” Starr said. “I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by good coaches and good players.”

CHRISTIAN 62, LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 9 – The Patriots of Christian finished the regular season as the top scoring team in the San Diego Section with 474 points in a 9-1 season.

“We did that despite playing with nine running clocks,” said Christian offensive coordinator DAVID BEEZER.

Six times Christian scored 49 points or more, including 62 vs. La Jolla Country Day in Friday’s (Nov. 8) non-league finale. The Patriots figure to earn a No. 2 berth in the San Diego CIF playoffs.

TREVOR HOWELL snared seven passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots romp over the Torreys.

In the third quarter, ZANE COFFMAN busted up the middle and went untouched for a 60-yard touchdown run.

Also in the third, Christian sophomore quarterback DAVID TODD JEREMIAH fired a quick-hitter to a slashing TREVOR HOWELL around the left hash that turned into a 50-yard score, as Howell juggled the pass momentarily before gathering it in and racing in to the end zone.

Late in the third, freshman JOEY MORONES rumbled up the middle for a 53-yard run, shedding a tackler at midfield and getting hauled down at the 1. On the next play, the 205-pound back was rewarded with the 1-yard scoring blast.

The Patriots' offensive line had a field day, led by freshman JON STEIN, juniors CHAD HUMPHRIES and LAITHE ISENMANN, seniors DAVID SUDA and OWEN ADAIR, and sophomore TY NICHOLS.

Christian improved to 9-1, while the Torreys fell to 5-5.

EL CAPITAN 48, EL CAJON VALLEY 7 – As predicted, this regular season finale was all but over at the end of the first quarter. However, the visitors did not come away unscathed.

El Cajon Valley coughed up the ball on their first possession, and it was recovered deep into Braves' territory by El Capitan linebacker DANIEL GOULET.

The Vaqueros were in business. The first handoff from scrimmage was to linebacker-fullback D.J. SMITH, and as he stumbled he laid his right hand down to regain balance. He came up with his elbow hanging . . . season over.

"It's devastating for the team, and for D.J.,” said El Capitan coach RON BURNER. “The whole plan was for D.J. to get a few carries and gain 18 yards to achieve 1000 yards for the season, and to sit out the remainder."

The show had to move on, and the Vaqueros did just that. Five plays later quarterback BRAD CAGLE up the middle for a 3-yard score, 7-0 El Capitan . The Vaqueros would not let up, with Cagle hitting slot receiver ISAIAH CAPOOCIA twice for two scores in the 1st quarter and with wide receiver DYLAN ARNAIZ in the second quarter, leaving a lopsided score of 42-0 at intermission.

Coach Burner, aware of needing to keep his players healthy, as they stand to be the No. 4 seed in the Division IV playoffs, started to file in the second stringers.

The Vaqueros allowed the Braves to chew up some field. An ALAN MICHAEL HARRIS quarterback run into the endzone for a touchdown late in the 3rd quarter left the score 42-7, Vaqueros.

El Capitan would take a knee in victory formation to seal the win, 48-7.

Cagle finished the night, 8-14 passing for 113 yards, threw 3 TD passes, and rushed for one.

"We are taking it one game at a time, are a No. 4 seed in SDS CIF playoffs, and a first round bye,” Cagle noted. “Whoever we play, we are gonna come out hard."

Cagle went on to say how he really wanted D.J. Smith to get his 1,000 yards rushing, and how he just slipped, and season over.

Another defensive notable, safety SAM MELERO had two picks on the evening, one he returned 70 yards for a touchdown.

El Capitan finishes the regular season 9-1 overall and 3-1 in Grossmont Valley League play. Be very afraid of these Vaqueros, they are a team to watch.

GRANITE HILLS 45, VALHALLA 25 – Only once in the last 12 meetings has Granite Hills vanquished Valhalla, but the Eagles did so convincingly Friday evening (Nov. 8), with a 45-25 nod at Granite Hills Stadium in a contest that appeared to be more of a practice session on “let’s see how many yellow flags we can throw” by the hardworking referees.

Late in the first quarter, Eagles junior quarterback SETH COLLINS broke through the line on a draw play and squirted 33 yards to the Norsemen 27-yard line to give the Eagles the first opportunity to score.

On the next play, however, Valhalla senior defensive back TYLER KASTAN and defensive lineman ANDREW TODD stuffed the runner and ripped the ball loose, where it was pounced upon by teammate CHRIS RAMSEY at the Norsemen 29-yard line.

Three plays later, with the ball at the Valhalla-31, EAN HENDRICKSON came in to punt for Valhalla . With a 1-8 record in this rebuilding year, offensive coordinator COLLIN EARDLEY had Hendrickson fake the punt and take off down the right sideline, stepping out of bounds 8 yards later after carefully negotiating his route just past the first down marker — that is, until the referee spotted the ball shy of the marker, giving the home team great field position at the Valhalla 39-yard line.

Collins methodically led the Eagles on a 12-play drive that resulted in the game’s first score when he scampered for an 8-yard touchdown run down the right sideline. BRYCE STRICKLAND split the uprights with the PAT attempt, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 6:56 left in the first half.

Junior quarterback VINCENT MANUPELLA took over for PHILLIP NASSEH on the Norsemen’s next possession, starting at their own 20-yard line. He got the Valhalla offense moving with a quick hitter to wide receiver DANIEL RODRIGUEZ, good for a 20-yard gain to the Valhalla 40-yard line.

Two plays later, Manupella threw a wide receiver screen pass to senior JOHN TODD for a 15-yard pick up to the Eagles’ 45-yard line. Then disaster struck.

First, one of many what appeared to be “phantom” holding penalties moved the Norsemen backwards to their 41-yard line; then MICHAEL LEDESMA picked off an errant pass for Granite Hills and returned it to the Valhalla 30-yard line.

A 20- yard pass to Eagles receiver JOSH LONGBRAKE to the Valhalla 8-yard line brought the Eagles knocking once again, but sophomore linebacker LOGAN BAKER and Kastan broke up successive passes, forcing Granite Hills to call upon Strickland to attempt a 24-yard field goal, which was good. Granite led 10-0, with 2:50 left to play before intermission.

Valhalla coach CHARLES BUSSEY must have pumped up the troops during halftime because the Valhalla offense came out firing on all cylinders, sustaining a 17-play drive that stalled at the Eagles’ 5-yard line. Hendrickson kicked a 22-yard field goal, making it a one possession game, 10-3, at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter.

It didn’t take the Eagles long, however, to rain on Valhalla ’s parade. Four plays later, JESSE BISBAL sped around the right side, kicked in the afterburners and jetted 56 yards to pay dirt, extending the Granite Hills lead to 17-3, with 6:59 remaining in the third period. Bisbal finished the game with 10 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Less than 2 minutes later, Valhalla was right back in the game. Following one of those phantom holding penalties, Granite had the ball at its 22-yard line. With a fierce rush, DIAMANTE COLEMAN, BRENT KEATON and GIUSEPPE CASTANOS stuffed the runner for a 3-yard loss.

On the next play, the snap went over the quarterback’s head, where it was scooped up by Baker at the Eagles’ 7-yard line and returned for a touchdown, once again making it a one-possession game, 17-10, with 5:03 left in the third quarter.

Undeterred and in a hurry to end the football victory drought against Valhalla , the Eagles took over the game. BLAKE DeHAVEN returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to the Norsemen 7-yard line. Three plays later, Collins smashed into the end zone from 2 yards out, making it 24-10 at the 3:10 mark. DeHaven returned three kicks for 122 yards

Seven seconds into the 4th quarter, Granite upped the score to 31-10 after Ledesma broke off a 16-yard run. Valhalla ’s DANIEL RODRIGUEZ scored two TDs in the 4th quarter, but it wasn’t enough, as Granite’s senior quarterback CHRIS MEREDITH threw a 27-yard TD pass to Longbrake and bulled into the end zone on a 1-yard quarterback sneak for another score.

Longbrake finished with 3 catches for 80 yards.

Defensively, Valhalla ’s Baker, the leading tackler in the San Diego Section, added 10 more tackles, as did Castanos, also one of the defensive stat leaders in the County.

MONTE VISTA 44, SANTANA 3 – Monte Vista senior running back JEMEIL JACKSON rushed for four touchdowns and three 2-point conversions for a 30-point effort in a Grossmont Valley League victory as the Monarchs finished the regular season with a 5-5 mark.

Jackson registered scores of 12 and 18-yard scores in the first quarter, and ran the conversion in on both, as the Monarchs surged to a 16-0 lead.

Junior running back LEE WADE added a 26-yard scoring run in the second quarter, and Jackson followed with the conversion, increasing the lead to 24-0.

The Sultans got on the board in the second on a 30-yard field goal by junior JACOB HAMPSON.

Jackson later rushed for another 18-yard touchdown, putting Monte Vista ahead 30-3 at halftime. Jackson ’s fourth score came on a 4-yard run in the third quarter.

Finally, in the fourth, senior running back JAQUI MORRIS ran for a 5-yard touchdown.

The teams split the time of possession, but Monte Vista finished with an 18-5 first-down advantage.

Monte VIsta 's defense recorded three interceptions on the evening.

Santana senior receiver OWEN BROWN had a nice night, grabbing six receptions for 44 yards, and recorded an interception with a 30-yard return. Brown also had 12 tackles, including seven solo and one for loss.

Santana senior linebacker A.J. JAMES had 10 stops, including five solo and one for loss.

Foothills falls, but future fuels optimism

CHULA VISTA (11-8-13) — Looking toward the future, Foothills Christian High was glad to prove the difference between the top and the bottom of the Citrus League is narrower than expected.

In Thursday's (Nov. 7) regular season finale, the Knights held the lead through the first quarter against Calvary Christian Academy before the Royal Knights pulled away in the second half to take a 56-19 victory, clinching their second straight league crown.

"We have mostly freshmen while Calvary has a bunch of seniors, so the future looks bright for us," said Foothills Christian head coach THOM LUBIC. "With a good summer in the weight room, our returning players now know for sure they can compete for the league title next season."

However, for 2013, Calvary Christian Academy (9-1, 5-0 Citrus) is the title-holder thanks to running back Justin Santa Maria. The junior back carried 29 times for 253 yards and four touchdowns, covering 3, 13, 28 and 25 yards.

Santa Maria capped an 88-yard drive on Calvary's first possession, but a couple of breaks allowed Foothills to claim the lead.

The hosts forced a fumble, but it was nullified by a roughing the passer penalty, which temporarily knocked the Knights' CALEB HOFFMAN out of the ballgame. But upon his return after sitting out one play, Hoffman connected on a 45-yard scoring strike to senior DANNY ZASTOUPIL in his final high school contest. Hoffman's conversion kick gave Foothills a surprising 7-6 advantage.

The teams then swapped five TDs over six possessions in the second quarter, giving Calvary a 28-19 lead at the intermission.

Foothills' scores included Hoffman's 13-yatd TD pass to CAMERON DESMARAIS. The score came on the first play following a 60-yard kickoff runback by DANIEL HOFFMAN.

A series later, a Hoffman-to-Hoffman connection saw a series of re-directions to avoid a pair of linebackers before Daniel Hoffman found clear space on a 76-yard dash.

During the second quarter, Santa Maria nearly posted another touchdown, but fumbled just short of the goal line, JOSEPH EICKOFFforced the ball loose with TAYLOR BANKHEAD recovering in the end zone for a touchback on the opening play of the quarter.

Just before the half, Bankhead registered another fumble takeaway after CONNOR GEORGE jarred the ball loose from Santa Maria in the backfield for a 3-yard loss.

FEARLESS FORECASTER – Predictions

The Record Book officially becomes obsolete

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com

SANTEE (11-07-13) — This Grossmont Hills League finale at West Hills Friday night (Nov. 8) has plenty of goals for both teams.

Fearless Forecaster
Last Week: 6-1 (.857)
Season: 63-22 (.741)

If the host Wolf Pack (7-2, 3-1 GHL) were to upend the No. 15 Grossmont Foothillers (7-2, 3-1), it is conceivable that the league could end up in a three-way tie, should Helix (7-2, 4-0) stumble at Steele Canyon (3-6, 1-3).

You could call this the Record Bowl.

On the Grossmont side Foothillers quarterback ANTHONY LAWRENCE has already established a San Diego Section record with 632 pass completions. The senior signal-caller needs 48 passing yards to break the section record for aerial connections. He’s also 7 touchdowns shy of the section touchdown passing record.

But all the hoopla does not belong solely to Grossmont.

West Hills’ kicker DANIEL McMANUS is on a record-breaking skein of his own. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior needs 3 field goals to break the CIF season record of 16 presently held by John Cortney of St. Augustine (1997).

On a further note, McManus is aiming to break the Most Consecutive Field Goals record of 9 that is held by Nate Tandberg of Rancho Bernardo (1993) and Jordan Congdon of St. Augustine (2004).

This has been a lopsided series of late, with the Foothillers winning the last four games by a composite score of 159-41.

It won’t be that lop-sided, but the Hillers should squeak out a victory this time... Grossmont 24-21.

No. 5 HELIX at STEELE CANYON, 7 – A year ago Helix stampeded past Steele Canyon 46-10 in a Grossmont Hills League contest, but there’s no way that a lop-sided game of that measure will be repeated Friday night (Nov. 8) in Cougar Country.

There are those who say it’s been a down year for Helix (7-2, 4-0 GHL), but you’ll never convince Cougars’ coach SCOTT LONGERBONE that the Highlanders are sputtering on either side of the ball.

The Highlanders need a victory to secure the GHL championship. Should they stumble, they could wind up tied with Grossmont and West Hills.

This is a new-look Helix team than the one that began the season. Quarterback MICHAEL AUSTIN is the sophomore director of an ever-improving offense for the Highlanders. NATHAN STINSON has picked up the ground game. In his latest outing he gained 185 yards and 2 TDs on 21 carries.

That backed up the passing of Austin, who completed 15 of 21 passes for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns.

But the pivotal performer for the Highlanders is JALEN DAVIS, who has scored 10 TDs as a receiver and kickoff returner.

Running back-slotbacks LAWRENCE DICKENS and MARKELL LINDLEY carry the Steele Canyon offense, while SEAN McCARTHY anchors the Cougars’ defense.

This one has upset written all over it... Helix 21-17.

VALHALLA at GRANITE HILLS, 7 – The host Eagles can look forward to the playoffs, while Valhalla has been all but eliminated as these two teams meet in Friday’s (Nov. 8) Grossmont Hills League final game.

The Eagles need a win to be 5-5 and will certainly get a berth in the San Diego Section Division III playoffs.

If Valhalla, in Division I, were to pull an upset, there’s a slight chance that the Norsemen could snag a playoff berth, but don’t bet on it.

The Eagles need to shift into high gear since they’ve lost 4 of their last 5 games if they want to get any kind of seeding preference.

Both of these teams have played musical chairs at various positions. Probably the most noteworthy players for Valhalla are linebackers LOGAN BAKER and GIUSEPPE CASTANOS.

Key players for Granite Hills are running backs JESSE BISBAL and SETH COLLINS.

Valhalla grounded the Eagles 41-0 a year ago but there’s no way that’ll happen again... Granite Hills 28-26.

No. 12 EL CAPITAN at EL CAJON VALLEY, 7 – This one should be an ugly affair as the once-beaten Vaqueros figure to bury the Braves in Friday’s (Nov. 8) Grossmont Valley League finale.

El Capitan is all but certain to extend its 5-game winning streak at the Braves’ expense, which includes a 54-14 victory over El Cajon Valley last year.

The Vaqueros are an offensive powerhouse led by quarterback BRAD CAGLE (2061 yds, 22 TDs).

On the flip side the Braves have been battered by injuries, so the score will be... El Capitan 42-7.

SANTANA at MONTE VISTA, 7 – The host Monarchs need a victory in Friday night’s (Nov. 8) Grossmont Valley League regular season final to finish with a 5-5 record.

Monte Vista has won 9 of the last 12 meetings in this series with Santana, including a 41-7 win last year.

The Monarchs are a battered bunch with key injuries across the board, but that will not be enough to stall them against the Sultans... Monte Vista 33-0.

CHRISTIAN at LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY, 7 – The Central League champion Patriots could easily look past host La Jolla Country Day in Friday’s (Nov. 8) season-ending non-league game. But don’t expect that to happen.

Led by quarterback MICHAEL CARRILLO (1792 yards, 22 TDs), the Patriots are poised for a blowout of the Coastal League Torreys (5-4). Carrillo has thrown only one interception in 279 passes.

Christian has scored 412 points while registering 3 shutouts on defense.

So even though this game doesn’t have any major meaning, don’t expect the Patriots to look past long-time rival LJCD... Christian 42-14.

Thursday, Nov. 7
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN vs. CALVARY CHRISTIAN
at Olympian, 7 p.m. – After snapping a lengthy losing streak with a 9-6 triumph over Julian, the Foothills Christian Knights hope to carry the momentum of a two-game winning streak into the playoffs in Thursday’s (Nov. 7) regular season Citrus League final. Last time these teams met was in 2011 with the Royals Knights snapping a two-game losing streak. This is a tough one to figure... Calvary Christian 23-9.

Should Helix High football be removed from the Grossmont Conference?

OTHER THOUGHTS:

I have been a reader of your website for more than 10 years and greatly appreciate the unique, high-quality product that you produce week after week. As such, I was surprised you were willing to utilize your reputable platform for the opinion piece written by Linda Byerline about the lopsided nature of the Helix-Grossmont rivalry. Despite her various accusations, she is unable to produce any evidence to indicate that Helix "recruits" football players. If anything, Helix has been hurt more by transfers with the transfer of Josh Harris to Oceanside than any benefit. Did any of this year's stars start out their high school careers at a different school?

I think the biggest indicator that Helix does not recruit is the continual influx of players who went to the feeder middle schools, La Mesa and Lemon Grove middle schools. If Helix coaches were recruiting Pop Warner players, we could see lots of players from completely different middle schools showing up at Helix freshman year. This simply is not the case. Should Ms. Byerline indeed have any evidence of malfeasance, a call to the CIF would quickly clear things up faster than airing any sour grapes on your website.

She indicates that the rivalry should be more even. Why is that? Should El Cajon Valley fans accuse Grossmont of recruiting because they have a grossly uneven series against them? Should Helix accuse Grossmont of recruiting in baseball given their prolonged string of dominance? No, some programs are simply better than others.

OPINION: Should Helix football be removed
from Grossmont Conference play?

[This is an independent opinion from one of our readers. EastCountySports.com takes no side in the matter.]

The annual football game for The Musket between Helix and Grossmont high schools sounded like it was full of excitement, but left me wondering, "What if?"

Prior to Helix making the transition to become a charter school for the 1997-98 school year, it was widely known to be a school that heavily promoted the football program. Thus, If you wanted your child to get a good education you would request an intra-district transfer and send them to Grossmont; if you wanted your child to do well in football you would request the paperwork to send them to Helix.

However, Helix' chartered status changed everything, making for an uneven playing field. The Highlanders now may acquire student-athletes in any form that they wish to acquire them to attend their school.

For instance, Point Loma Tech, which is on a lottery system due to the large number of students attempting to gain admission to the school, may choose to acquire their students in any form they wish to do so.

Thus, Helix, too, may also choose to pursue any specific type of children to attend their school by any means.. However, although a public school in the broadest sense, Helix possesses a free pass to recruit students specifically to play football, leaving them with a lop-sided series advantage in what should be a more even series with their neighbors to the east.

Things have reached extreme proportions. Helix players and coaches, during postgame hand shakes, openly ask the top opposing players to transfer, while coaches may also choose to attend Pop Warner games county-wide, looking for the Best of the Best and "woo" these potential students to their school. Again, something that other schools can’t do.

This advantage has resulted in Helix not only dominating its football series with Grossmont, the Scotties have already won league championships 10 times this century, including seven of the last eight titles.

The CIF is already taking measures to neutralize such advantages, lumping the most successful programs into an "open division" for playoff competition. Other parts of the country also are doing this.

However, the Grossmont Conference has remained effectively in tact for more than 50 years since its creation in 1961. Perhaps it's time to change the playing level during the regular season, too.

One easy fix is to move charter schools into the same league with large-enrollment private schools and academies. Thus, one league alignment could consist of: Helix, Steele Canyon (another charter high school), academies in San Dieguito and Canyon Crest, plus the county's two largest private schools in Cathedral Catholic and St. Augustine.

It's not like it hasn't happened before locally. When the CIF San Diego Section was formed in 1960, St. Augustine (along with Fallbrook and Mountain Empire) requested to remain in the Southern Section before returning years later.

This new "Super Six" league would consist of similar schools, each attempting to lure (recruit) students, doing so with the full knowledge of other schools that will not have this same advantage -- they must continue to take only the children within their boundaries.

Grossmont and Helix may continue to battle in non-league, neighborhood games, but the fallacy of a rivalry could be erased.

Administratively, the Grossmont Conference could still run well with nine schools (10 when a school in Alpine is finally constructed).

Since CIF opened the door with its new playoff line-up, go all the way and do it across the board. This system may be best for more schools and keep competition more fair, because right now, no one can effectively challenge Helix for the Grossmont Hills League crown.

— Linda Byerline

OTHER THOUGHTS:
I am an alumnus of Helix High School and former football player during the Jim Arnaiz era. Way back 30 years ago, our team won the Grossmont League title during all of the years I was a student and player. We also won a few CIF titles in the process.

Back in those days and continuing on into the 1980’s and 1990’s, Helix remained a football powerhouse. Helix has dominated the Grossmont League for more than 30 years and the results are due to great Coaches and players, striving to always stay on top. Helix has always modeled its football program, in the same manner as Michigan, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, etc. The football program has always been top notch and the players of today and many former players always strive to keep the tradition alive! So, why now are parent's or coaches from other schools complaining?

This constant whining and complaining that Helix always has the best football athlete’s is nonsense. The football coaches at Helix are all top notch. Aside from the varsity head coach and defensive coordinator, most or all of the junior varsity and freshmen coaches are dedicated volunteers, who have full-time jobs, and dedicate their time to contribute to a successful program. I should know, because I am one of those coaches. We have players that come to us with little or no prior playing experience at the youth football level or at any level of football. We coach and develop these players to improve their skill level and enhance their football knowledge. There are many examples I could provide to your independent source. We also stress academics first and tell our players that football or any other sport is secondary.

Other Grossmont League schools have many talented football players. I should know, because I have seen them play against Helix over the past five years. Maybe it is time for these Grossmont League schools, who are upset with the level of play from their football teams, to please look in the mirror and develop a football program that fits there talent and plays to there strengths. Maybe then, they will begin to realize, that it takes hard work and dedication, to become a successful football program.

No one is complaining that Oceanside High, Cathedral Catholiic High and others, qhich are also dominant football programs in San Diego County. Heck, Oceanside has beaten Helix numerous times in the CIF Finals and all we talk about at Helix is working hard and striving to remain competitive for our school and community!

I am just appalled at these accusations, They hold no merit.
