But when a surprising jump pass over the middle
was intercepted by 5-foot-8 linebacker Rene Siluano
in the endzone with 10 seconds remaining, it clinched
a fifth consecutive San Diego Section crown for
Oceanside, which held off the upset-minded Highlanders,
23-19, at Qualcomm Stadium.
"The call may not be the typical play that
someone is expecting, but that's what made it
a good call," said Scotties 6-foot-8 tight
end LEVINE TOILOLO, the intended receiver. "It's
a play we've practiced but never used in a game.
It just didn't go our way."
A week ago in the semifinals, the Helix defense
made a late, goalline stand to subdue Eastlake
27-24 when the Titans attempted to run up the
middle. History also records two other postseason
contests also ended in similar fashion this playoff
year, including two failed attempts by El Capitan
against St. Augustine.
So when Helix failed on a 1st-and-goal from the
Pirates-1 on a handoff to reliable running back
TRAVON VAN (90 yards on 17 carries), Starr elected
to cross-up the Oceanside defense with a 1950s
era jump pass.
"I was only responsible for a pass, so that's
what I was looking for, no matter what kind of
pass it might have been," said Siluano, who
stands a full foot shorter than the Stanford bound
Toilolo.
And when the pass darted towards the knees of
Siluano, Toilolo had no opportunity to utilize
his massive height advantage to reach the football,
thus ending Helix' shot at upsetting the defending
CIF state bowl game champions.
Oceanside (12-0-1), which ran its unbeaten streak
to 25 games the Pirates' last setback was
to Helix in the 2007 season opener now
moves into consideration for another state bowl
contest at Home Depot Center in Carson.
Meanwhile, the disappointment among the Highlanders
was tremendous as, ultimately, history did repeat.
Oceanside now owns four straight championship
game victories over Helix over the past seven
seasons, the others coming in 2002, 2004 and 2006.
This one was the closest.
"It didn't matter who had the ball in their
hand, we just had to score," said Van. "The
defense always brings their lunch to work
they work hard every game and gave us a chance,
but we just didn't finish it off."
Helix got the ball back with 3:02 remaining when
senior free safety TRELAN TAYLOR survived a collision
with teammate PAUL BLAKENEY to hang on to the
ball for an interception at the Helix-36.
Two plays later, Helix quarterback TY CULVER
(9-for-16, 147 yards) found Taylor on a 41-yard
pass down the right sideline in front of the Oceanside
bench. The pair again hooked-up for a 3rd-down
conversion for 15 additional yards to move into
position for the upset of the Pirates, the top-seeded
team in the division and ranked 20th in California
by CalHiSports.com.
"The interception was a big play that changed
the momentum, as our offense tried to get it done,"
noted Taylor. "We kept fighting back, but
that (final offensive) play isn't the reason we
lost."
Helix (10-2-1) shocked many by taking a 19-16
halftime lead, despite being out-gained by a 2-to-1
margin in yardage. However, Oceanside took the
second half kickoff and marched 77 yards in 12
plays, capped by a 1-yard by Jake Fely.
Little did anyone know the touchdown would be
the lone scoring play of the second half.
"Everyone worked hard on their specific
assignments and did a great job making plays when
the ball came their way," Toilolo noted about
the Helix defense. "We had our opportunities,
but small mistakes cost us."
Oceanside took the a 7-0 lead just 57 seconds
into the contest, driving 49 yards after recovering
an onsides kickoff to start the contest. Four
plays later, Pirates quarterback Jordan Wynn (13-34-3,
300 yards) connected with Demario Coleman from
26 yards for the score.
Culver answered with a 5-yard TD run off the
right tackle, following the lead block of pulling
guard ANTHONY LARCEVAL with 13.8 seconds left
in the period. The conversion was wide leaving
Oceanside with a 7-6 lead, however the Pirates
missed their own PAT following a 1-yard TD dive
by King Holder.
Helix got even on Culver's second touchdown run
from 3 yards out with 3:34 left in the half, but
Oceanside kicker Jose Velasquez booted a 41-yard
field goal to regain the lead at 16-13 with 31.8
seconds to go.
However, the Scotties took their first lead on
a 25-yard gallop by Van. The score was set-up
when Taylor returned the kickoff 42 yards to the
middle of Oceanside territory after bouncing off
a hard hit by a Pirates tackler and bouncing to
the outside.
Holder finished with six receptions for 65 yards,
Siluano led all Oceanside rushers with 72 yards
on 14 carries.
The Helix defensive unit finished by gaining
four turnovers. In addition to Taylor's interception,
JO-JO PHILLIPS returned a theft made in the end
zone 70 yards, while Blakeney recorded both a
pick and a fumble recovery, as a hard hit by defensive
end ANTHONY ANDERSON jarred the ball loose.
Culver finished with 1,948 pass yards, topping
the school's best mark this decade set in '01
by ALEX SMITH (1,704), now with the NFL 49ers.
Cathedral
makes case for state bowl bid,
romps past Valhalla in Division III finale
Buoyed by four touchdowns by record-setting senior
running back TYLER GAFFNEY, Cathedral Catholic capped
a perfect 13-0 season by whipping the Norsemen,
49-13, in Friday's (Dec. 12) SDCIF Division III
championship contest at Qualcomm Stadium.
Gaffney's scores give him 51 for the season,
a new San Diego Section record. The tailback also
rushed for 156 yards, giving him 2,459 for the
season. The section rushing record is 2,663, set
later in the evening by Escondido junior Ricky
Seale, who gained 216 in the Cougars SDCIF Division
I 45-28 setback to La Costa Canyon, which gained
its first-ever SDCIF Division I title.
The Dons (13-0) are in the running for a CIF
state bowl contest, which would give Gaffney one
additional contest to make a run at the mark.
Gaffney was talking about everything except individual
records after pasting the Norsemen, who were making
their first-ever title game appearance.
"Perfect. 13-0. Senior season. You cant
ask for more," exclaimed Gaffney. "And
although it's not in our control, we do want to
go 14-0."
On Sunday (Dec. 14), all 10 CIF section commissioners,
including San Diego's Dennis Ackerman, will meet
to award berths to next weekend's expanded series
of five state bowl games.
Also influencing the decision is the state rankings
by CalHiSports.com. Senior editor Mark
Tennis was in town to watch both top contenders
Cathedral and Oceanside to rate the squads, while
gathering opinions from coaches and members of
the media. An informal poll in the press box showed
the Dons with a slight edge over Oceanside; ballots
for the final county rankings are due over the
weekend.
Gaffney helped make the case for the Carmel Valley
side. Along with his rushing, he caught two passes
for 98 yards -- both for touchdowns -- and returned
a pair of punts for 45 yards, giving the senior
nearly 300 all-purpose yards.
"We were trying to spread the ball, show
them we could do this and we could do that,"
noted Gaffney. "Then we started to put the
grind on them and put them down."
However, the contest did not start well for Cathedral.
After a scoreless first quarter, it was Valhalla
which broke the ice to take the early lead.
Following an interception by WESLEY PARKER, the
Norsemen needed just two plays to score on a pass
by PETE THOMAS. The junior quarterback connected
with JAMES LEIGHTON, who bounced off a pair of
Dons tacklers for the 11-yard touchdown.
Thomas finished by completing 25-of-34 for 308
yards, including seven to Leighton for 95 yards.
Missed opportunities earlier prevented Valhalla
from gaining a larger cushion.
Two other first-half drives into the Dons redzone
saw a 4th-down pass get batted away by Brenden
Van Deventer, then a fumble at the goalline late
in the half was recovered by Cathedral.
"We had some chances to score a couple of
other times," admitted Valhalla coach STEVE
SUTTON. "But we didn't because of the fumble
at the goalline, then the protection went wrong
in the first quarter and their kid knocked the
ball down on fourth down."
The Norsemen also lost a score after a penalty
nullified a 97-yard kickoff return by TRAIVONNE
BROWN in the second half.
"Their defense is really good -- I didn't
realize how fast they are, which is one reason
why they are 13-0," added Sutton. "I
don't know if we could've beaten them, but we
should've scored more than we did."
Still, going against one of the Southland's top
ballclubs, Valhalla held its own for the first
15 minutes, limiting Gaffney to just 21 rushing
yards in the first period.
"We just came out and tried to show them
what we had," junior nose tackle SHANE PENNIX
stated. "Gaffney is a great running back
and once he gets outside, he can break tackles.
So we had to show how we could pressure him and
keep him inside."
"His legs are strong and he made some good
cuts to break tackles."
Added Brown, "It was our first time here,
so we had to come out pumped up and show that
we deserved to be here."
After Cathedral took a 7-6 lead, Gaffney scored
on a 19-yard burst, then hauled in a 56-yard TD
pass, breaking four tackles along the way for
a 21-6 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Gaffney scored on a 31-yard
gallop, then on a 42-yard pass from quarterback
Parker Hipp. The younger brother of Grossmont
College JC All-America tight end KYLE HIPP --
the 2008 Joe Roth Memorial Award recipient --
completed 9-of-16 passes for 208 yards and three
scores.
Valhalla's other score came midway through the
third period on an 80-yard march.
Thomas went 2-for-2, including long completions
to DEREK WHITE (37 yards) and MATTHEW SWANGER
(22) to get to the Dons-1, where Leighton took
a fly sweep to the right to cut the lead to 35-13.
The Dons capped the scoring with Van Deventer's
44-yard runback on an interception.
"I told the team I wasn't satisfied until
I got the ring," added Pennix. "But
we got to the 'Q' for the first time, so I am
satisfied now."
Added Thomas, "We felt good -- we should've
put it in on those first two drives. But Cathedral's
defense is solid and they stopped us in the redzone
twice. We finally put it in the endzone, but we
knew going in that we needed to score more than
twice to beat these guys."
"Cathedral's defense is really fast -- they're
right up there with Helix -- and showed they're
the No. 1 team in the county."
Another bright note for the Norsemen: the offense
returns eight starters.
"Plus, Shane is the cornerstone of our defense
and he'll be back," noted the quarterback.
"I know we didn't win our last game, but
11-2 is pretty good."

CIFSDS Division III Championship
Valhalla Norsemen vs. Cathedral Catholic Dons (Photo by Bob Davis, Cathedral Catholic HS)
The conversation may be well-deserved.
The top two teams in both major San Diego County media
rankings, defending state bowl titlist Oceanside (11-0-1)
owns a 24-game unbeaten streak as the Pirates seek a
fifth consecutive Division II section crown. Meanwhile,
undefeated Cathedral's Dons (12-0) is rated 10th in
the state one slot above the Bucs, according
to Cal-Hi Sports.
However, speculation centers around the belief that only
one San Diego Section program will advance into the expanded
state bowl series, with five ballgames to be held at Home
Depot Center in Carson. Thus, it may simply come down
to a recommendation by SDCIF commissioner DENNIS ACKERMAN
to the other nine section leaders which comprise the selection
committee on which team gets in -- or more importantly,
which is left out.
Cathedral, a Division III program, is actually classified
as a Division II program by state CIF enrollment standards,
just like Oceanside. And both teams may be ignored as
the Southern California representative.
In the Southern Section which is commonly accepted
to be stronger Corona-Centennial (13-0) meets
Chaparral (12-1) for the Inland Division title, while
Long Beach Poly (13-0) tangles with Tesoro (14-0) for
the Pac-5 crown.
Fortunately for the San Diego schools, Sherman Oaks
Notre Dame and Orange Lutheran, which are ranked ahead
of them, both suffered playoff losses last week, opening
the door for a possible bowl berth as an at-large representative.
But which one?
In the local media poll which includes East County
Sports.com and The North County Times lists Cathedral
ahead by a sliver, taking 11 of 21 first-place votes.
It's a similar margin which has the Dons ahead by one
spot in the Cal Hi Sports state rankings, although Oceanside
gets the slight nod in the USA Today national ratings
at No. 20.
It should be an extremely difficult choice to make
a determination.... Stop!
Despite all the talk, did someone forget that East
County's very own Helix and Valhalla high schools remain
on the schedule before any discussion of advancing to
any state bowl becomes valid.
Not a slouch at being in the limelight, the Highlanders
(10-1-1) are making their 8th appearance at Qualcomm
since 1998, and are longtime acquaintances with Oceanside's
Pirates. They will meet in the finals for the fifth
time this decade for the section's Division II crown.
The Norsemen (11-1), guaranteed with their finest finish
in school history, are newcomers to playing at the "Q."
They will take on the Dons for the Division III title
in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
DIVISION III
No. 9 Valhalla vs. No. 1 Cathedral, 1 p.m.
The Dons attack centers around senior running
back Tyler Gaffney, who has scored a San Diego Section
record 282 points (47 touchdowns) this season, including
a record-tying 7 against Scripps Ranch on the final
day of the regular season.
With 2,381 rushing yards, Gaffney needs 244 more to
break the section record of 2,625, set by Gary Taylor
of Morse in 1990. Should Cathedral win and gain a bowl
berth, the record should no doubt get eclipsed.
The Dons average a click under 48 points per contest,
but do allow their share of opposition scoring
the opening necessary for the Norsemen to stay in the
contest with their aerial attack led by Valhallas
most prolific passer, PETE THOMAS.
Speedy running back TRAIVONNE BROWN has breakaway speed
and is the point man in the running game for the Norsemen.
DEREK WHITE, MATTHEW SWANGER and JAMES LEIGHTON are
sure-handed receivers who know how to find the endzone.
Cathedrals Parker Hipp is no slouch throwing
the football, having completed 69 percent of 165 passes
for 2,054 yards and 20 touchdowns. Hipp also averages
nearly 6 yards a carry and has scored three times.
Nobodys offense is better than Cathedrals.
The closest thing to it would be possibly Valhallas
offense.
Nonetheless, the Norsemen have no answer for Gaffney.
Thus, Valhalla better force several turnovers or else...
Cathedral, 48-21.
DIVISION II
No. 3 Helix vs. No. 2 Oceanside, 4:30 p.m.
The seemingly annual battle for the Division II title
between these Green & White clad programs should
be another thriller.
While Oceanside is known as a running team, the rise
in the play of senior quarterback Jordan Wynn makes
the Pirates even more difficult to contend with. The
Pirates' question mark was at receiver following the
graduation of their top six pass catchers, but a new
crop has exceeded expectations in the transformation
of the offense.
At the top of the list is Osmond Nicholas, who has
verbally committed to San Diego State, and DeMario Coleman,
who has the best hands among the Pirates, owning team
highs of 43 receptions and 1,164 yards.
Among the people media and coaches we've
talked with, almost everyone says the score will be
28-21. We don't know if that's an Internet rumor everyone
has picked up on, yet almost everyone has made the same
prediction with one asterisk you need to select
the winner.
The Scotties front seven is certainly capable of stopping
the running game. They held Valhalla's touted pass attack
to just two touchdowns in a 28-14 victory with a speedy
secondary led by TRELAN TAYLOR and BRANDON WATSON.
Let it be said that Helix plays a little bit of offense,
too. Running back TRAVON VAN is a scoring threat every
time he touches the ball, and senior TY CULVER is an
underrated quarterback. When it comes to 6-foot-8 LEVINE
TOILOLO, take your pick where he makes his greatest
impact because hes good on both sides of the ball.
The Fearsome Forecaster has been RED
HOT with upset selections during the postseason
(do you remember Grossmont over Bonita Vista, Steele
Canyon over Ramona, and Helix over Eastlake).... Do
you mean???... Yes, the East County Sports' championship
Upset Special... Helix, 28-21.
