DEL CERRO (7-11-09) — San Jose State bound quarterback Ronnie Yell scrambled 71 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 8:14 remaining Friday (July 10), giving the South a late 10-6 victory in the 19th annual Alex Spanos All-Star Classic, held at Patrick Henry High School Stadium.

Yell, a recent grad of Lincoln High, avoided an up-the-middle pass rush, skipped past another North defender, then sprinted the distance along the right sideline for the winning score. The decisive play gave Yell the most outstanding player award among South players, a roster which included 20 members from East County high schools.

The winning coach for the South was El Capitan's RON BURNER.

Valhalla’s ‘Pistol Pete’ Thomas chooses ASU

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (7-2-09) — Valhalla High coach STEVE SUTTON has tagged his nationally renowned quarterback PETE THOMAS with the moniker “Pistol Pete.”

No one is actually sure why the veteran Norseman coach has chosen to hang that handle on his premier passer, but Thomas was firing bullets with pinpoint accuracy during his junior season during Sutton’s second year at calling the plays.

“Coach has done a lot to make us a better football team in his two years here,” Thomas said. “It starts with getting up at 5:30 in the morning all summer, lifting weights and playing in as many passing tournaments as we can.”

Coming off his junior season when he passed for 3,159 yards and 28 touchdowns on 246-of-360 accuracy, Thomas attracted college scouts by the dozens. He was offered recruiting trips by the handfuls, but made actual official visits to Boston College, Maryland, Northwestern, Colorado State and Arizona State. He also was accepted at Harvard where only academic scholarships apply.

On top of that, Thomas and his family toured the country last summer, visiting colleges showing interest in the 6-foot-5, 210 pound quarterback.

“When we weighed all the pros and cons it always came back to Arizona State as the best fit for me,” said Thomas.

Thus, Thomas recently made a verbal commitment to Arizona State . He will enroll at the Tempe , Ariz. university in time for the 2010 season.

Three factors led to Thomas’s final decision.

No. 1: “I guess the biggest thing is they run a pro style offense similar to what we do at Valhalla only a lot more sophisticated,” he said.

No. 2: “They play in the Pac-10 which is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

No. 3: “ASU is a lot closer to home than many of the others, which isn’t a big deal, but it does allow my parents a chance to attend more games.”

College football’s elite institutions have been in pursuit of Thomas for more than a year. At the top of the list is USC.

“They approached me, but never made any firm offers,” Thomas said. Same is true with several schools of that caliber.

“I’m happy with my decision,” Thomas said. “I have family living out there and that made it a more comfortable fit.”

Playing for Arizona State’s father-son coaching tandem of Dennis and Bryce Erickson is another plus in Thomas’ eyes. The young recruit finds Xs and Os on the Sun Devils’ drawing board as magnetic.

“Coach Dennis has won two national college championships and coached in the NFL,” Thomas said. “He definitely knows how to develop quarterbacks.”

With his future planned, Thomas believes he can take a clearer focus on his final season. Valhalla fell one victory short of claiming the San Diego CIF Division III championship, falling in the final, 49-13, to Cathedral Catholic.

“We plan to have a better finish this year, Thomas said.

Thomas will graduate next January.

“I’ll be able to get to Tempe early enough to compete for the starting job as a true freshman,” he said.

Van on road to join Florida Gators

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (6-26-09) — Former Helix High running back-corner TRAVON VAN expects to be playing football at the University of Florida in the 2010 season.

Albeit Van has committed to the Gators, he must first hike up his grades at Milford Academy, a prep school in New Berlin, N.Y. He’ll attend in the fall.

TROY STARR, head coach at Helix, believes Van can succeed at Milford and move on to Florida.

“There is a lot of upside to Travon,” Starr said. “He has the ability to be a running back or a corner at the Division I level. I know he can compete for playing time. (Florida) did not take him as a favor to me.”

Starr was an assistant coach for head football coach Urban Meyer at Florida in 2007.

“The Florida coaches liked him the first time they saw him,” Starr said.

The 6-foot, 195-pound Van rushed for 1,237 yards and 11 TDs on 139 carries last season for the Highlanders (10-2-1) who lost the San Diego CIF Division II championship to Oceanside (23-19) in the final seconds.

Milford Academy plays a 13-game schedule, including games against Navy JV, Army Prep, Yale JV, South Alabama JV and Princeton ’s frosh.

“My objective is to make it to ‘The Swamp,’” Van said. “I figure this next season will be a nice stepping stone to get me there. I know I can make an impact on the field, but I also have to take care of business in the classroom.”

For the past three years, Milford Academy has sent 98 percent of its students on to college.

“I’m not sure where I stack up at Milford, but I’m ready to compete,” Van said. “All I know is Milford is the No. 1 prep school in the country.”

Football: And there they go!

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (6-9-09) — Five Helix Highlanders, past and present, have advanced their college football careers for 2009.

Quarterback TY CULVER and linebacker EDDIE FAAMAILE are moving on to the University of San Diego, while running back JOJO PHILLIPS and safety TRELAN TAYLOR will attend NCAA Division II Chadron State (Neb.) in the fall.

Culver racked up 2,588 yards total offense for the Highlanders a year ago and earned All-East County Sports.com honors as did Taylor, who reeled in 10 interceptions in his final two seasons.

Former Helix standout DERRICK PERRAULT, a two-year starter at safety at Southwestern College, has accepted a scholarship to NCAA Division II Western New Mexico University. The Mustangs are based in Silver City, N.M.

Meanwhile, Grossmont High defensive back DOMINIQUE BRADLEY has accepted a scholarship to NAIA power Midland Lutheran (Freemont, Neb.), while Monte Vista product RODNEY TAYLOR, a defensive back, plans to attend and play football at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa.

Midland Lutheran has taken a liking to East County football players the past few seasons. Grossmont High graduate KHALID WATERS made contributions during his freshman season as did defensive back BRANDEN BROWN (Steele Canyon). Former Foothiller MICHAEL GRAHAM has also joined the Midland express.

Shropshire bound for Whittier

SPRING VALLEY (6-5-09) — Mount Miguel High School ’s CHRIS SHROPSHIRE will play football at Whittier College this fall, Matadors head football coach TOM KARLO has announced.

A 5-foot-8, 172-pound defensive back, Shropshire carries a 3.5 GPA and also received an offer from Menlo College.

“He is a great kid who really put in the time to get his academics to the point where he had options for continuing his education,” said Karlo. “I really enjoyed having him on the team and I am confident he will have a successful future.”<

Cameron Moss
Moss selects to
be Rams tough

© East County Sports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO (1-29-09) — Steele Canyon tight end CAMERON MOSS drew the attention of colleges across the nation during his junior and senior seasons playing for the Cougars. Thus, he had plenty of choices to select from when it came time to cast his future.

The 6-foot-5, 236-pound Moss has committed to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. He was also offered scholarships by New Mexico, San Diego State, Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) and Dartmouth College (for academics). Moss said he liked Dartmouth (Hanover, N.H.) of the Ivy League, but it was too far from home.

Colorado State was nothing but plusses to Moss’ way of thinking. Not only are the Rams coached by former Patrick Henry, Mesa College and CSU alum Steve Fairchild, Moss has relatives living in a Denver suburb.

“My mom’s sister and her husband live in Aurora, Colo.,” Cameron Moss said. “So it’ll be nice to have family an hour or so away.”

Since the Rams return two seniors at tight end Moss figures to redshirt his first season.

“That’s fine because it’ll give me time to work in the weight room, learn the system and get acclimated academically,” Moss said.

This is Fairchild’s second season as head coach and his 13th year as coach in the program. He’s also coached the Buffalo Bills and St. Louis Rams.

“I played against Fairchild,” said Cameron’s father MARTIN MOSS, a graduate of UCLA who played for the NFL’s Detroit Lions. “I’ve always been big on the quality of a person. Steve Fairchild is a quality guy.”

CSU’s Anthony Hill (running backs coach) handled the recruitment of Cameron.

“He was very supportive,” Moss said.

Stanford, UCLA, Washington State and Villanova also expressed interest.

Cameron Moss plans to major in Civil Engineering. Colorado State is one of the nation’s top schools for that degree.

“Our whole family sat down and listed the pros and cons of each school,” Cameron Moss said. “My dad had some influence on me, sure. But the decision was ultimately mine.”

Rust joins new coach at NMSU

© East County Sports.com
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State University’s technique for recruiting El Capitan High’s passing phenom TANNER RUST was straightforward.

Rust remembers checking out his telephone voicemail one evening when he heard an unfamiliar voice that would change his future.

The caller leaving that message was New Mexico State University’s DeWayne Walker, who only four weeks earlier was named head football coach of the Aggies.

“He asked me if I wanted a scholarship,” Rust recalled. “Yeah, I was completely taken by surprise when I heard that message. I guess they liked the films I sent them.”

El Capitan's Tanner Rust

Walker, UCLA’s defensive coordinator a season ago, has added former Washington State offensive coordinator Tim Rosenbach to his staff. Rosenbach is a former NFL quarterback.

“They brought four coaches to my house for a visit,” said Rust of the Western Athletics Conference braintrust. “It was impressive to have that kind of attention.”

Rust did receive the similar coddling from San Jose State, which sent head coach Dick Tomey to his Lakeside home.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Rust, appears to be the blue-chip quarterback recruit for the Aggies, who also have three redshirt freshmen and a JC transfer returning from last year’s 3-9 team.

San Diego State made a scholarship pitch to Rust last year, but he did not bite.

Other schools might have attempted to recruit Rust’s rocket passing arm – 5,884 yards, 60 TDs, 359 completions in 677 attempts had he not maintained a keen interest in baseball.

Bottom line is baseball could still be Rust’s track to the future.

New Mexico State has agreed to allow Rust to play baseball in addition to football. That might not be enough, although the Aggies posted a 28-33 record on the diamond a year ago.

Cal State-Fullerton, UCLA and USD remained on Rust’s trail to the end, hoping to make him a full-time baseball player. Rust batted .410 as a junior catcher and .404 as a sophomore shortstop.

As a Division I quarterback, he may not have that choice.

“It takes a lot of time in the off-season to be a big-time college quarterback,” El Capitan coach RON BURNER said. “So obviously Tanner will eventually have to make a choice.”

Not to be overlooked is the June professional baseball draft.

No question Rust should attract attention from the pro scouts.

“Right now, I’m thinking about being a college quarterback,” Rust admitted. “But, at the same time, I want to enjoy my last year of high school baseball.”

Anthony Larceval
Larceval commits to San Jose State

SAN JOSE (1-23-09) — Helix senior nose guard ANTHONY LARCEVAL, a three-time All-East County Sports.com first-team pick, has made a verbal commitment to attend San Jose State University on a football scholarship in the fall of 2009.

The 6-foot-1, 262-pound Larceval was selected the East County Sports.com Defensive Player of the Year as a senior after helping guide the Highlanders (10-2-1) to the Grossmont Conference championship. Helix reached the San Diego CIF Division II finals before losing to Oceanside in the final seconds.

According to Scout.com, Larceval has been flying under the radar for much of the past year, despite great showings in the spring and summer at the New Level/Badger 7-on-7 tournament and the Scout Combine in Los Angeles.

Sacramento State showed early interest, but San Jose State clinched the deal.

Larceval had played linebacker prior to this year, before moving to the D-Line. The SJSU coaches already have him penciled in to play up front, possibly at defensive tackle.

“I’m solid to San Jose State,” Larceval told Scout.com. “That’s the best fit for me.”

Foothills wins second crown

LINDA VISTA (1-16-09) — Foothills Christian School, coming off its first-ever football league title, captured a second crown this season.

The CIF-San Diego Section office announced the winners of its annual All-Academic teams for the fall sports season, with the Knights owning the top composite grade-point average among every school – in all divisions – in the section. All members of the Foothills football team, using the CIF's unweighted scoring system, posted a 3.27 GPA.

"We couldn't be prouder for all of our players," noted Knights head coach STEVE PERDUE. "It shows the dedication of our players both on the field and in the classroom."

The Knights will join six other sports programs in a ceremony at the next CIF-SDS Board of Managers meeting, to be held Tuesday (Jan. 27) at the San Diego County Office of Education complex, Annex C, at 9 a.m..

Among East County schools, honorable mention included the Helix High girls field hockey program, and the Christian High girls volleyball program.
