EAST COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL — 2009

West Hills names one of its own to baseball post

© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (8-28-09) — Little more than a decade ago former West Hills student-athlete JASON FOWLER was a senior catcher for the Wolf Pack. Earlier this week he was named varsity head baseball coach at his alma mater by vice principal DAVE RIOS.

Fowler, who went on to play baseball at San Diego City College and Upper Iowa University, replaces CHRIS BAUM.

“When I finished college I had the West Hills baseball job in my sights,” Fowler said. “But, at the time, it was not open.”

So Fowler joined the football staff at Madison and is committed to coaching that sport there again this season.

At the same time he’ll begin making plans for the Wolf Pack baseball team.

“We lost most of our experience, so I know we will have to reorganize and rebuild,” Fowler said. “Of course I want to win, but I’m not real concerned with how many games we win my first year. Our goal will be to compete, stay in every ballgame.”

Fowler finds coming back to East County sort of a return to the future.

“I’ve always looked up to coaches in the Grossmont Conference, guys like ( El Capitan’s STEVE) VICKERY and (Santana’s JERRY) HENSON,” Fowler said. “We want to model our program after them. It’s good to be back home.”

The Wolf Pack finished 36-47 in three seasons under Baum.

Eagles' Hopper, Sultans' Smith, gain D-I rides

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (8-21-09) — A pair of East County players have made plans to move on to the collegiate Division I level.

TRAVIS HOPPER, a three-year starting pitcher for Granite Hills High School, has accepted a baseball scholarship to New Mexico State University.

Meanwhile, Santana outfielder CODY SMITH, who’ll be a senior for the Sultans next spring, has verbally committed to San Diego State University.

Hopper, a 6-2, 182-pound southpaw, twirled three seasons for the Eagles, compiling a 21-11 record with a 2.87 ERA. The crafty lefty notched 86 strikeouts in 210 innings. He joins an Aggies staff that has two senior southpaws returning from last year’s 44-17 MNSU team.

One thing Hopper doesn’t do is live off the fastball. He’s a clever corner cutter who was the starting and winning pitcher for Granite Hills when the Eagles defeated Torrey Pines in the San Diego Section Division I championship game in 2007.

Among his honors were being selected to the All-East County team as a sophomore and a junior. He also gained a berth on the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team as a junior.

Smith, who batted .357 with five home runs, 17 RBI and 17 stolen bases as a junior for Santana, selected Tony Gwynn’s Aztecs over Arizona and UC Riverside.

“Why wouldn’t I want to play for one of the greatest hitters in baseball history?” Smith said. “Those other schools are great, too, but SDSU is close to home so my family can come to a lot of the games.”

Little Poteet becoming a giant

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (8-9-09) — Christian High freshman CODY POTEET, rated one of the MaxPreps.com top 30 freshman baseball standouts of 2009, has been named to the website’s All-America team.

A 6-foot, 160-pound right-hander, Poteet earned All-East County™ first team honors with a 9-1 record, a 1.56 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings. When he wasn’t pitching, Poteet, batted .394 with 31 RBI, eight doubles and nine home runs.

Needy could become a Future Friar
Santana standout signs with Padres for $300K

© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (7-28-09) — Upon his graduation from Santana High in early June, JAMES NEEDY had a handful of choices, but has decided to embark on a career as a professional baseball player rather than accept a baseball scholarship to the University of San Diego.

“Yeah, I’ve signed,” confirmed the 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-hander, a 6th-round choice in the June draft by the San Diego Padres. He was the 174th pick overall.

Needy received a $300,000 signing bonus.

At the moment, Needy is going through the routine physical tests to satisfy the Padres they’ve spent their money well.

“I know I had an option between going with the Padres or attending college,” said Needy, who posted a sparkling 1.00 ERA with an 8-5-1 record and 97 strikeouts in 91 innings for the Sultans this season.

Once the paperwork is completed, Needy will report to the Padres' Arizona rookie league in Peoria, Ariz., by the end of the week.

“I thought about it a long time, but I decided baseball is the route I want to take and I want to get started as fast as I can,” he said.

Probably the only drawback, if it is one, is Needy has bronchitis right now.

“I think that bothers me more than it bothers them,” he said. “But this is not the way I wanted to start out.”

Needy is not overly concerned about his current illness.

“My focus is on baseball and I’m ready to go.”

Needy’s veteran coach JERRY HENSON of Santana believes his big pitcher made the right choice.

“If that’s what he wants to do, I’m going to back him all the way,” Henson said. “I guess when you think about it, it’s the right decision that he can live on. It’s not like he made a rash or quick decision. He pondered it for weeks.”

Now that everything’s been decided, Needy said, “I’m satisfied with my position and where I’m going. As a matter of fact I’m downright excited.”

It's Griffin vs. Griffin after younger brother
signs with LMU, could oppose USD sibling

LOS ANGELES (7-24-09) — It seems strange, almost, that a pitcher of the talent of Grossmont’s AARON GRIFFIN would be a senior without a scholarship. After all, Griffin owned an 18-1 record with two saves and an ERA of 2.04 over his last two seasons, which included 148 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings.

Add to his positive formula the fact that he’s 6-foot-5, 200 pounds, which made his availability even more confounding. Upon his graduation from high school, the college coaches started to come calling. Pepperdine, Oregon, San Diego State and Loyola Marymount all expressed interest.

Griffin finally signed with the Lions of Loyola Marymount.

“I feel blessed to get an opportunity like this,” Griffin said. “I’m pitching in a quality (West Coast) conference and I’m only 130 miles up the road from Grossmont High.”

But the story goes deeper. There’s a strong possibility that freshman Aaron Griffin could pitch against his brother A.J. GRIFFIN, who will be a senior at USD in the fall. The older Griffin has been an award-winning closer in the WCC for the Toreros, but hopes to move into the starting rotation his final year.

“I’ve never pitched head-to-head against my brother,” Aaron said. “To get that chance at the college level would be a great opportunity that I’d truly relish. You know, with all the baseball and all the sibling rivalries we’ve had as brothers over the years, this would be an exciting challenge – I know for me and probably for both of us.”

The younger Griffin has been told by head coach Jason Gill that he has a chance to grab one of the Lions three starting positions and could possibly end up the team’s closer next season.

“They’ve given me a very good deal and shown me a lot of respect and that’s all I can ask for,” Aaron said.

While Aaron continues to work out in preparation of launching his college career on August 28, A.J., a late-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies is putting together a brilliant season with the semi-pro Santa Barbara Foresters. In 37 innings, A.J. has posted a 5-0 record and a 0.71 ERA for the Foresters (31-9). He struck out 41 and walked five. The Santa Barbara team is making a run to repeat an NBC (National Baseball Congress) champions.

Conor Meredith

Meredith takes D-II rout to Upper Iowa

© East County Sports.com
FAYATTE, Iowa (7-24-09) — Grossmont High alum CONOR MEREDITH has played just about every position possible on a baseball diamond.

“Yeah, they even looked at me as a catcher,” he said.

But the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Meredith will begin his collegiate career at Upper Iowa University as a shortstop next season.

Meredith, who batted .370 with 8 home runs, 28 RBI and 10 stolen bases as a senior, elected to accept a scholarship from the Division II Peacocks over lesser offers from Rhode Island University and Arkansas State, both Division I schools.

“I know a lot of people probably think ‘What’s a Southern California kid like me going into the frozen tundra to play baseball for?’” Meredith said. “Actually it doesn’t snow as much as people out of the area like to believe. It’s about the same as Chicago. Really, we get more games called because of cold weather than snow or rain.”

Fifteen seniors graduated from last year’s Upper Iowa team, which finished 27-27. According to Meredith, Upper Iowa has a returning all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference second baseman.

“I’m not sure but I think the coaches are hoping that I can fill in at shortstop to keep him at second base,” Meredith said. “That’s fine with me. At Grossmont, I played shortstop as a freshman and as a sophomore. I think I’m up to the challenge.”

Meredith’s father, Jeff, who was a successful college football player as well as a baseball coach at Grossmont, warned his son not to take his competition lightly.

“These are college baseball players and they obviously have talent, no matter where they come from,” the elder Meredith said.

Weather aside, Meredith will have the warmth of knowing he has an uncle who lives only four hours away (in Chicago).

AFLAC ALL-AMERICAN GAME
El Capitan's Vickery tabbed West coach

© East County Sports.com
SAN DIEGO (7-2-09) — During his 30 seasons as a high school baseball coach, El Capitan High’s STEVE VICKERY has mentored in his share of high profile games. Of course, his 562 victories attract him to the promoters of the elite contests – both locally and nationally.

Vickery, who has managed teams in the California North-South All-Star series and the Area Code Games in the past, was introduced as the West All-Stars skipper for the 7th annual Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic, slated for Petco Park on Sun., Aug. 16.

Forty of the nation’s top seniors-to-be will face off in an East-West format in a nationally televised contest carried live by FSN (Fox Sports Net) at 5 p.m. (PDT).

“It will be nice to be surrounded by all that talent,” Vickery said. “It’s an honor to be able to coach these guys in the most prestigious all-star game of its kind.”

No East County players are included on the two 20-player rosters. The only local guy involved is Rancho Buena Vista High shortstop TONY WOLTERS.

The only East County players to have participated in this game are Valhalla brothers SEAN and RYAN O’SULLIVAN.

The blue-chipper in this year’s contest is Las Vegas High catcher Bryce Harper of Las Vegas High. Harper was featured on the June 8 cover of Sports Illustrated. He is labeled the LeBron James of baseball. And the guy is only 16-years old. Wow!

Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith will serve as the Aflac Baseball Classic honorary chairman for the third year in a row.

“All of these kids picked for the game are the total package,” Smith said. “They’re not only talented ballplayers they are good students. Most of them are going to get a chance to experience their dream, so we’ve stressed how important it is to give back.”

Tickets are $5 and available at the Hall of Champions. Proceeds from the game will benefit Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego’s only hospital dedicated exclusively to pediatric care. Since 2003, this event has generated nearly $685,000 for charity.

The Aflac game was held at Dodgers Stadium last year with the East winning 4-2. Approximately 1,000 fans attended the game. The previous two games were sellouts at SDSU’s 3,300 seat Tony Gwynn Stadium. Aflac officials are anticipating a larger crowd this year and have worked out a deal with the San Diego Padres to play in Petco Park.

  West Hills seeks baseball coach

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (7-13-09) — West Hills High School is seeking a head coach for the Wolf Pack baseball team following the sudden resignation of CHRIS BAUM last Wednesday.

Baum guided the Wolf Pack for the past three seasons, compiling a 36-47 record. Baum has reportedly moved to the Midwest to further his education.

For more information on the opening, contact West Hills vice principal David Rios at (619) 956-0420.

'New' names in prep baseball

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (7-1-09) — No matter what the sport, coaching changes are always part of the game nowadays.

Switches at the helm are just short of routine. Two of the latest changing of the guard involves baseball at Monte Vista and Valhalla.

Former Granite Hills alum and assistant coach CHAD WILLIAMS has accepted the varsity baseball post at Monte Vista High. He is replacing BRANDON ROGERS, who resigned to pursue other business opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Norsemen’s new baseball mentor is familiar in name but clearly a new face. That is, MIKE M. WILSON is replacing MIKE J. WILSON at Valhalla’s varsity helm.

Valhalla’s newest field boss named Wilson spent the past 12 seasons coaching baseball at Cathedral Catholic – 11 as the Dons’ junior varsity head coach. A year ago, Wilson was a varsity assistant, helping the Dons capture the Division III section championship.

“I’ve wanted my own program for a long time,” Mike M. Wilson said. “This is a challenge to take over a great program coming off a down year. We have a strong senior class coming back so it should be exciting competing against the great baseball teams they have in East County .”

Williams, 25, steps in as one of the youngest coaches in the San Diego CIF. He is, however, not lacking support.

Splitting his college career between two seasons at San Diego State (under Tony Gwynn) and two at Chico State, Williams spent three seasons as an assistant coach under the tutelage of Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS.

“I learned a lot from Coach Davis, both as a junior and a senior and as a coach,” Williams said. “I’ve been around him – I almost sound like him. I’ve picked up a lot of his sayings.”

Williams figures three seasons as an assistant coach under Davis is a solid stepping stone to Monte Vista where he will be joined by his father MIKE WILLIAMS, who spent 25 years coaching baseball and football at Patrick Henry. Solid assistant coach DAVID CRABTREE (a former Davis disciple) and proven winner MARK SMELKO (1998 CIF Division II champions) are also part of the newcomer’s staff.

“This is a good opportunity for me,” the younger Williams said. “I plan to take a more leadership role. I know the talent is there, and that’s what makes this job so exciting."

SAN DIEGO (6-12-09) — Former Grossmont High standout A.J. GRIFFIN was drafted in the 34th round of Thursday’s (June 11) final day of professional baseball’s free agent draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 6-foot-5 junior right-hander and a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection, entered the season as the all-time leader in career saves, then added three more to that record, which now stands at 28, before having to move into a starting role for the Toreros, due to injuries on the USD pitching staff.

Griffin posted a 5-2 record in league games, with a 4.17 ERA and rang up 50 strikeouts. Griffin was also named WCC Co-Pitcher of the Week once this season. Overall, Griffin posted a record of 8-3 with a 3.33 ERA and was second on the team in strikeouts with 85.

Padres select Santana's Needy in 6th round

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (6-11-09) — When the curtain fell on JAMES NEEDY’s senior baseball season on Thursday (June 4), the Santana pitching ace sat in the dugout while his teammates scurried for their cars in a rush to get to the Santee school’s senior prom.

When asked about the upcoming draft, Needy shrugged his shoulders. It was not that he didn’t care, but more because he was uncertain how much immediate impact it would have on his life.

On Wednesday (June 10), Needy found out. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound right-hander was selected in the 6th round by the San Diego Padres. He was the 174th pick overall.

“My dad stayed home from work to follow the draft on the internet,” Needy said.

But the pitcher still got the scoop. Seems the younger Needy was sleeping when his name popped up on the draft tracker teleprompter.

He was awakened by a telephone call from Padres’ scout Pete DeYoung.

“He didn’t ask me any questions; he simply said I’d been drafted by the Padres,” Needy said. “I guess you could say I was surprised that the Padres took me. I feel like I talked to someone from every team.”

Needy posted a sparkling 1.00 ERA with an 8-5-1 record and 97 strikeouts in 91 innings for the Sultans this season.

Other East County athletes selected in the second day of Major League Baseball’s free agent draft were Steele Canyon right-handed pitcher ANDREW BELLATTI (Tampa Bay, 12th round, 379th overall), Grossmont College outfielder SEQUOYAH STONECIPHER (Florida Marlins, 14th round, 428th overall).

Needy said DeYoung made a home visit.

“I guess it was about a month ago when he came over to our house,” Needy said. “All he talked about was the Padres’ organization. He didn’t ask stuff like how much it would take for me to sign, stuff like that.”

Needy said he had expected to be drafted somewhere between the 3rd and 10th rounds.

“I was hopeful for the 3rd round, but if I went as low as the 10th it would be nightmarish,” he said. “I guess I was drafted a little lower than I thought I would be, but I’m not too far from the middle.”

Of course Needy doesn’t have to turn pro out of high school since he has a baseball scholarship to the University of San Diego in hand.

“It’s a win-win situation for me in that I’ll be playing in San Diego , one way or another,” Needy said. “I have a lot of thinking to do but they are both great opportunities. In the coming days I’ll just have to weigh which one’s the best.”

The Padres are expected to begin negotiations with Needy as early as Friday (June 12).

“It feels like I’ve been on the phone all day,” Needy said. “I never knew I had so many friends until my name popped up in the draft. When I went to lunch today, people came up and congratulated me – people that I’ve never even met.

“I guess this is the most exciting day of my life so far,” he added. “It’ll be interesting to see where things go from here.”

Much like Needy, Bellatti has big-time options. He can sign with the Devil Rays or ride his scholarship to Cal State Fullerton, one of the premier baseball colleges in the country.

Bellatti posted a 6-6 record with one save and struck out 79 in 68 1/3 innings. His ERA was a respectable 2.77.

As a batter, which will not be Bellatti’s future, he hit .414 with seven home runs and 27 RBI for the Cougars.

Bellatti could not be reached for comment.

As expected, Stonecipher – a 6-foot, 195-pound left-fielder – as selected by the Marlins.

“Actually, I went a few rounds higher than I expected,” Stonecipher said. “I just want to get my foot in the door. It’s always been a lifetime goal for me.”

Stonecipher tied for the California Community College home run lead with 17. He also possesses excellent speed on the bases and a strong arm in the outfield.

“I know I showed a lot of power but I don’t consider myself a home run guy,” said the Mission Bay High grad. “I’m more of a gap-to-gap kind of guy.”

Although Stonecipher had several scholarship offers, including one to NAIA champion Lubbock (Texas) Christian, turning pro seems to be his focus.

“We’re going to talk about it, but I hope things work out so I can get my pro career started,” he said.

Meanwhile, GOLDY SIMMONS, a San Diego native who came to SDSU via San Diego City College and Monte Vista High, was drafted in the 23rd round by the Chicago White Sox.

Simmons made 16 appearances including three starts in his first season as an Aztec. He finished with a record of 1-0 and a 5.97 ERA, striking out 30 over 28.2 innings of work.

The son of former major league outfielder Nelson Simmons, Goldy was previously drafted twice, both after his senior year of high school and his freshman season of community college ball.

The 2009 draft resumes with rounds 31 through 50 on Thursday (June 11) at 9:30 a.m. (PDT). Fans can follow the proceedings on the internet at MLB.com.
