Competition in Esquibel family, as tough as on the field
By James McHugh
© East County Sports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO (3-31-15) — Steele Canyon freshman first baseman JOSH ESQUIBEL has the type of frame any head coach would love to work with, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds with a left-handed stick at the plate.
Over the last several games, Esquibel has been putting that frame to work at the dish, hitting at a .571 clip for the season with 4 RBI’s in his last outing against West Hills, a game the Cougars won 15-3. Esquibel credits the comfort of his new bat for his hot start, “I got a new bat at the beginning of the season, and since then I’ve just felt really comfortable at the plate,” he said.
Heading into the Premier Division of the Lion’s Tournament this week, Esquibel will have an opportunity to let his talents shine on a stage that has seen the likes of several MLB stars such as Adrian Gonzalez, J.J. Hardy, Mark Prior and STEVEN STRASBURG (West Hills) pass through over the decades.
Steele Canyon head coach DAN NERAT sees the upside in the talent Esquibel has already put on display during the early half of his freshman campaign.
“You don’t see kids like him come around all that often,” Nerat said. “He’s quiet, but very coachable, very manageable.”
With baseball minds taking note of Esquibel’s performance, there are a few things his coach would like to see remain a focus moving forward.
“I just want to see him stay grounded, as attention comes his way, stay grounded and perform in the classroom,” Nerat stated. “I always remind these guys they are students first.”
Coach Nerat’s words of wisdom are a calming reality check in a day when student athletes are often reaped with praise for their on-field success, yet left to their own devices in the classroom. At the high school level, many factors can play into an athlete’s success in both aspects – coaches, family and community among them.
In terms of family, Esquibel has no shortage of athletes to look to for motivation. Josh’s father PAUL was a record-breaking running back at Valhalla, while sister IRENE heads up the Steele Canyon girls wresting program that just landed five members on the all section first team to close out the 2014-2015 season.
Family can provide great motivation for players, but living in the shadow of successful kin has the ability to work in other ways as well. “I guess I feel a little bit of pressure,” Esquibel stated when asked about playing into the family line of athletes. “I want to do better than they did, and my sister went to State so I want to go further than that.”
What “further than that” means to the young Esquibel is a possible dream of playing in the big leagues one day. “I’d like to get drafted right out of high school, but whatever the best route is, that’s where I’d like to end up," he said.
If Esquibel continues to grow and hit in the same manner in which he started the season, the attention, the offers and the accomplishments will come, but for now, Esquibel will focus on getting through his first season of high school ball.

LAKESIDE (3-31-15) — El Capitan pulled an end to end victory over Ramona in Monday’s (Mar. 30) opening round of the Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
It was a bookend win for El Capitan. Both teams scored in the 1st inning and the Vaqueros scored in the 9th to finish it 2-1.
The Vaqueros (6-3) pulled it out in the bottom of the 9th. KENNY OLHAUSER singled, advanced two bases on outfield errors and scored on a pair of Ramona errors as the Vaqueros upended the Bulldogs.
JASON MOORMAN doubled and scored on a single by MYLES EMMERSON in the 1st inning.
Ramona counterpunched with a single tally in the bottom of the opening inning.
After that it was all about zeros. Ramona’s Blake Workman, who attracted between 10 and 12 scouts, allowed two runs, only one earned, in a nine inning effort but saw the game slip away in the final frame.
El Capitan reliever JORDAN FRANTZ pitched two shutout innings, allowing only one hit, to earn his first win.
GROSSMONT 3, WEST HILLS 1 — CALVIN FARRIS pitched a 3-hitter as the Foothillers knocked off West Hills in Monday’s (Mar. 30) opening round of the Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Farris walked two and struck out four. MICHAEL BYERLINE pitched one inning in relief to earn his first save, throwing two scoreless innings.
Grossmont took the early lead in the 1st inning as TIGER GUERRERO doubled, moved to third on a two-base hit by Farris and scored on an RBI single by Byerline.
The Hillers extended their lead in the fourth inning as EVAN McCARTHY singled in a run and Byerline scored another in the fifth.
West Hills scored on NATHAN LEDFORD’s RBI ground out.
SANTANA 6, SANTA MONICA 5 — The host Santana Sultans squeezed out a one-run victory over Santa Monica in Monday’s (Mar. 30) Division 5A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The Sultans swiped this win in the 5th frame as JACOB ODENKIRK slapped a 2-run double, scoring REECE HERNANDEZ and pinch runner XAVIER BAZA.
For the Sultans NOAH NUNEZ was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and TRISTEN SALINAS was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
GREEN VALLEY 5, GRANITE HILLS 2 — Granite Hills blew a 2-1 lead when Green Valley (13-2) scored 4 runs in the 7th inning to steal the victory of Monday’s (Mar. 30) Classic Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The Eagles, who are known for their hitting, were rationed to 5 hits by the Gators’ Blake Inouye.
“We’re still trying to figure it out,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS. “It seems like we can’t close people out.”
JACOB VERDON paced No. 3 ranked Granite Hills’ meager attack with two hits in two at-bats.
Eagles pitcher ANDREW BROWN surrendered only 5 hits and 3 runs in six innings while striking out eight.
MOUNT MIGUEL 9, HIGH TECH-SAN DIEGO 0 — Three Mount Miguel pitchers combined to silence the Storm of High Tech High-San Diego in Monday’s (Mar. 30) Division 3A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
ERIC DE LA ROSA, ANDREW MONTIJO and ENRIQUE KELLER allowed only 4 hits among them as they slammed the door on High Tech.
Mount Miguel (5-3) broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the third inning. ALEX ESTRADA doubled in JOHNNY NICASIO to put the Matadors on the board. With two outs De La Rosa slashed a 2-run single and eventually scored on a double by Keller.
De La Rosa finished 3 for 5 with two RBI and Estrada was 3 for 5 with three RBI. Montijo was 2 for 2 with two RBI.
SILVERADO 11, HELIX 6 — What started out to be a slugfest in La Mesa between the Skyhawks of Nevada’s Silverado High and the Helix Highlanders found the Skyhawks leading 8-6 after five innings of Monday’s (Mar. 30) Classic Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders their offense stalled after that and the Skyhawks, who scored in every inning, continued on for the victory.
Helix attempted to pick up the pace but was unable to do so as they were outhit by the Skyhawks 15-7.
LEE MUTTER hit a 2-run homer for the Highlanders, but it was much too little to keep pace with the streaking squad from Silver City.
SAN YSIDRO 8, VALHALLA 1 — Visiting San Ysidro shut the lights out on the Valhalla Norsemen in Monday’s (Mar. 30) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Eight Cougars contributed to an 11-hit attack against three Valhalla pitchers.
Trailing San Ysidro 4-1, the Norsemen finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With one out COLE HENDERSON singled to right and GARRETT YOCOM singled to third to put runners at first and second. CALEB ST. CLAIR then singled to left, scoring Henderson.
DOMENIC DONATO was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple for Valhalla.
But that’s where the Valhalla offense succumbed.
CRESPI 6, MONTE VISTA 1 — Encino’s Crespi Celts cut down Monte Vista in Monday’s (Mar. 30) first round of Division 4A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
For Crespi it was snap, crackle, pop as they pitched a 2-hitter against Monte Vista (3-5).
The Monarchs avoided the shutout in the 6th inning on an RBI single by DIEGO SANDOVAL who scored AUSTIN CAOLE after a series of hit by pitches. Monte Vista missed a second run in that inning as DAVID GARCIA was cut down at the plate.
VISTA 9, STEELE CANYON 0 — The 8th ranked Vista Panthers made it look easy as they smoked Steele Canyon in Monday’s (Mar. 30) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The loss snapped a 3-game winning streak for the Cougars (3-5), while Vista improved to 8-1.
Steele Canyon was rationed to seven singles in the lop-sided loss.
BUCKLEY 15, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 — The El Cajon Valley Braves could muster only one hit as they took a beating from the Sherman Oaks Buckley Griffins in the Division 1A Plus opening round of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament on Monday (Mar. 30).
DAVID GARCIA accounted for the Braves lone hit. Garcia scored a run as did ALEJANDRO HERRERA in the 2-run second inning.
Division 1A — Foothills Christian had to drop out of the 1A Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament “for the first in 20 years,” said a disappointed Knights coach DAVE LEWIS, due to some of his players electing to attend Spring Training in Peoria, Ariz. in lieu of playing in this tournament.

SANTEE (3-28-15) — JOSH ESQUIBEL went 4 for 4 with four RBI and three runs scored Friday (Mar. 27) as Steele Canyon hammered West Hills 15-3 in the Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
Steele Canyon (3-4) has won three games in a row and has scored 36 runs in the process. In addition to Esquibel, who is wielding a hot bat, the Cougars’ TANNER LOGAN laced 2 hits and drove in 3 runs. SERGIO ALCAREZ came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI.
Steele Canyon broke the game open with 7 runs in the 5th inning. The Cougars’ hit parade also included ZACH HART, who was 4-for-4.
West Hills’ NATHAN LEDFORD accounted for 2 of the Wolf Pack’s 3 hits in the onslaught.
VALHALLA 8, MONTE VISTA 2 — The Valhalla Norsemen jumped out to an early lead on Monte Vista in Friday’s (Mar. 27) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference tournament and captured an 8-2 victory, ending a four game losing streak at Monte Vista.
The game was decided quickly as the Valhalla Norsemen exerted their will early with five runs in the first two frames. A two-run home run by senior centerfielder ANDY VAN ANTWERP and an RBI single by CASEY O'SULLIVAN in the first inning followed by a two-run double by Van Antwerp during the second inning helped put Valhalla in front early. Van Antwerp racked up five RBIs on three hits for the Norsemen.
Senior right-handed pitcher GARRETT YOCOM racked up five strikeouts with no walks in 5 shutout innings. IVAN PLAZOLA was charged with the loss lasting just one inning, walked three, struck out one, and allowed five runs.
Monte Vista plated 2 runs in the 7th, scoring on an error in left field and a sac fly by DAVALOS.
EL CAPITAN 4, HELIX 3 — The El Capitan Vaqueros scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to knock off the Helix Highlanders in Friday’s (Mar. 27) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
JOHNATHAN SUMMERS had 2 doubles and scored on a home run by JASON MOORMAN in the 7th inning to hoist the Vaqueros record to 5-3.
For El Capitan SEAN DUNNE gave up 5 hits and one earned run. CHANCE COLSON came out of the bullpen and allowed one hit in two innings to earn the win.
The Highlanders LEE MUTTER surrendered only one run in five innings, but reliever ADRIAN SANCHEZ gave up 3 runs, 2 earned and was tagged with the loss.
GROSSMONT 10, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 — The Foothillers knocked out 11 hits en route to a victory over host Mount Miguel.
CAMERON HENDERSON was 4-for-4 with 3 runs and 3 RBI, including a double to lead the Foothillers (3-5) past the Matadors in Friday’s (Mar. 27) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
Sophomore JACKSON HULETT threw 5 scoreless innings, giving up 4 hits, walking none and struck out 1. He is now 1-1. JAYDEN LOMBARDO and MARCO BAUTISTA each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
“Hulett did an excellent job of pounding the strikezone today,” said Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO. “It was nice to get a win, but we just have to focus on getting better every day.”
CHRISTIAN 6, BISHOP’S 1 — BRYCE JURRIES pitched his third complete game victory, allowing 3 hits and only one earned run in Friday’s (Mar. 27) City Conference Tournament game as the Patriots improved to 8-1.
Jurries was 2-for-3 and TREVOR HOWELL drove in 2 runs as the Patriots continued their winning streak.

By Bill Dickens

LA MESA (3-26-15) — Helix propelled itself into contention for the Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament championship with a 6-3 victory over West Hills on Wednesday (Mar. 25).
KRIS AGUILAR slammed a solo home run for West Hills in the 6th inning. Aguilar finished with 3 hits for the Wolf Pack.
HUNTER ISBELL was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Highlanders. JACK STRONACH contributed a 2-for-3 effort for Helix.
Said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND, “We don’t do anything spectacular. We just grind it out.”
Helix has committed only one error in the last six games. In the Bill Dickens standings Helix and El Capitan are each 2-0.
"We we're able to battle, cutting the deficit in half,” said West Hills coach MIKE (Cougar) HARWELL. “I’m proud of the Pack’s performance! We hung tough with a very good team."
EL CAPITAN 5, VALHALLA 2 — El Capitan bolted out of the gate for 4 runs in the 1st inning and continued on for an easy victory over the Norsemen in Wednesday’s (Mar. 25) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
The Vaqueros opened up a 2-out rally when JASON MOORMAN was hit by a pitch. MYLES EMMERSON followed with a single to left. KENNY OLHAUSER was then hit by a pitch and SEAN DUNNE got an infield single to second base, scoring Moorman. TRISTAN DUNCAN hit a bloop single to center, scoring Emmerson and Olhauser.
In the 5th inning El Capitan’s JOHNATHAN SUMMERS tripled to right field. SAM MELERO hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Summers to complete the Vaqueros scoring.
DYLAN WANNAMAKER surrendered 2 runs in six innings to post his first win for the Vaqueros. Olhauser pitched a two inning shutout to earn his first save.
GROSSMONT 4, MONTE VISTA 2 — Monte Vista, with an upset in mind, scored 2 runs in the 1st inning by IVAN PLAZOLA.
That would be all for the Monarchs as the Foothillers came back in the 2nd inning on a home run by MICHAEL BYERLINE in Wednesday’s (Mar. 25) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
The Foothillers took the lead in the 3rd inning as TIGER GUERRERO singled, CAMERON HENDERSON walked and CALVIN FARRIS doubled to center, scoring Guerrero. Then ADAM LOPEZ slammed a 2-run single to left.
That would be enough offense for BRAEDEN BARR, who pitched a complete game allowing only 4 hits and 2 runs as he posted his first win against one loss. He struck out 7.
JONAS BUCHANAN also tripled.
STEELE CANYON 10, SANTANA 4 — Steele Canyon posted its 2nd straight victory behind the pitching of AVERY TUCK and GEOVANNY QUIROS in Wednesday’s (Mar. 25) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament. In a five inning stint Tuck surrendered only 2 runs and 6 hits, while Quiros allowed 2 runs and 2 hits.
Steele Canyon scored 4 runs in the 1st inning as MATTHEW BAGDASAR singled and stole second base. TANNER LOGAN was hit by a pitch and Tuck hit a ground ball to third. On an attempted pickoff at first base the ball got away and Bagdasar scored. JOSH ESQUIBEL also hit a sacrifice fly and JOHNNY DELUCA had an RBI single as did TREVOR ROW.
The Cougars continued to take the burden off their pitchers shoulders in the 4th inning as Tuck slammed a solo home run. Notable for Steele Canyon is the Cougars pitchers had 3 RBI in the contest. Quiros came into the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th and slammed a single down the right field line, driving in 2 runs.
CHRISTIAN 4, SAN DIEGO 0 — Christian High posted its 3rd straight shutout, blanking the San Diego Cavers in Wednesday’s (Mar. 25) City Conference Tournament action.
NATHAN JARVIS allowed only 2 hits in a complete game effort, walked none and struck out 5 as he posted his 3rd win without a loss.
The Patriots punched in 4 runs in the first three innings and never looked back.
CHASE WEHSENER slugged a triple as did NATE CAZARES for Christian.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 16, ARMY-NAVY 3 — NATHAN YEAGER and BAILEY LEWIS combined to pitch a 1-hitter at the Knights beached the Army-Navy Warriors in Wednesday (Mar. 25) Eagles Classic.
Foothills Christian hammered out 16 hits, including 4 by DANIEL LUCKETT, who scored 4 runs and drove in 4. He also scored a 2-run homer in the 5th inning.
RYAN QUINN also had a big offensive output as he went 3-for-4 with 4 runs scored and an RBI. Leadoff hitter EZRA SIMS was 3-for-5 with 3 runs and an RBI.
Luckett also hit a triple as did Sims.
Foothills Christian improved its record to 7-3.

BARONA (3-25-15) — Foothills Christian couldn’t find its offense as the Knights fell to the Calvin Christian Crusaders 7-0 in Tuesday’s (Mar. 24) Eagles Classic.
The Knights’ meager offense featured three hits, including a 2 for 3 effort by RYAN QUINN and 1 for 2 output by MARK PROFETA.
Quinn (1-1) was the hardluck loser for Foothills Christian (6-4) on the hill.

Duncan leads Vaqueros past Foothillers
By Bill Dickens

EL CAJON (3-24-15) — TRISTAN DUNCAN pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only two earned runs as the El Capitan Vaqueros upended visiting Grossmont 5-3 in Monday’s (Mar. 23) opening round of the 5th Annual Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
SEAN DUNNE got the final strikeout to earn his second save.
For Grossmont CALVIN FARRIS was the hardluck loser, surrendering two earned runs in four innings and striking out nine.
The Foothillers punched in three runs in the first inning, as EVAN McCARTHY was hit by a pitch and moved to third on an error. He scored as TIGER GUERRERO was hit by a pitch. After a walk to Farris and two outs, MICHAEL BYERLINE singled him in.
After that Grossmont’s offense went dormant.
JOHNATHAN SUMMERS led off the 1st inning for El Capitan with a single and moved to second on an attempted pick off. One out later JASON MOORMAN singled in Summers.
In the 3rd inning after Summers walked and stole a base, then advanced to third on a wild pitch, SAM MELERO singled to score him. The inning continued when MYLES EMMERSON singled to center to score Melero.
Melero struck again in the 5th inning, leading off with a single and a stolen base. He advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt. The centerfielder dropped the ball and Melero came home.
In the 6th inning CHANCE COLSON was hit by a pitch and DAWSON McCLANAHAN ran for him. Duncan hit a sacrifice to advance McClanahan to second and JAKE MEDFORD hit an infield single to put runners at the corners. DALTON JENNINGS executed a squeeze bunt that turned into a single as no one was covering first base. The play scored McClanahan.
HELIX 7, SANTANA 3 — There was nothing perfect about the Helix victory over Santana in Monday’s (Mar. 23) opening round of the 5th Annual Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament.
But coach COLE HOLLAND’s Highlanders always seem to find a way to come out on top.
The Highlanders built a 6-2 lead then had to hang on to hold off the Sultans.
Helix appeared poised to turn the game into a rout as the Highlanders scored three in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Santana fought back with a pair in the bottom of the seventh but it was much too late.
Helix took the lead in the second inning when KEATON CHASE doubled in LEE MUTTER.
In the sixth inning HUNTER ISBELL supplied the key hit, a 2-run single, to extend the Highlanders’ advantage to 3-1. Another run scored on an error.
Helix expanded its lead with three more runs in the seventh.
Santana scored two runs in the seventh inning on a base hit by JACOB ODENKIRK, who finished 3 for 4 with two RBI in the game.
STEELE CANYON 10, MOUNT MIGUEL 4 — Steele Canyon won its first game in five starts Monday (Mar. 23) in the opening round of the 5th Annual Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament with a victory over the Matadors in Spring Valley.
LANDON SCHIRER, a sophomore right-hander, did not allow an earned run as he carried the Cougars into victory lane. He struck out eight in his complete game effort.
The Matadors snapped a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning. With two outs MIGUEL OROZCO singled and advanced on a wild pitch, later scoring on an error by the Cougars first baseman.
Steele Canyon added a run in the 5th inning on a sacrifice fly by JOSH ESQUIBEL, scoring MATTHEW BAGDASAR, who had taken two bases on an error.
The Cougars scored six runs in the seventh inning to pull out the victory. Bagdasar doubled to give Steele Canyon the lead. TANNER LOGAN followed with an RBI double, as did Esquibel. The Cougars cashed in their final tally on a wild pitch.
“We let one slip away today,” said Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “We gave them nine walks. They made the plays when they needed to. They were due one, I just wish it hadn’t come against us.”
WEST HILLS 16, VALHALLA 1 — The Wolf Pack played a complete game Monday (Mar. 23) against Valhalla, winning the first game of the 5TH Annual Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament. After the smoke cleared, it was 16-1 West Hills Wolf Pack.
Junior left-hander GABRIEL SCHUBERT was tabbed to start on the hill. He picked up the win, tossing 4 innings only allowing 3 hits and striking out 3 while only surrendering 1 run. After the Wolf Pack offense extended the inning, JEREMIAH BARR stepped in to shut down the Valhalla hitters for 2 innings. West Hills, throwing their third left-hander, CLAYTON LEWIS finished up the final inning to preserve the win.
The Wolf Pack hitters had one of their best games of the year, slugging 17 base hits and scoring 16 runs.
“I tip my cap to Valhalla and Coach MIKE BANDO, they played with character and competed to the last pitch,” said Wolf Pack coach MIKE (COUGAR) HARWELL.
The Pack offense was led by senior NATE LEDFORD 3-4 (1) HR, 5 RBI with 2 runs scored. Other notable hitters were JOEY KRUG 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI, BRYCE GIBSON 3-4, 3B, 3 RBI, junior catcher AARON BARKLEY also had a solid day at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a run scored.
CHRISTIAN 11, KEARNY 1 — The Patriots pounded Kearny for 11 runs in the first three innings of Monday’s (Mar. 23) City Conference Tournament.
That would be plenty for the pitching of JOHN GERSHOW, CAMDEN BESSONE and WILL HAIL. The trio surrendered only seven hits and one run, with Gershow picking up his second win and striking out three.
Christian (6-1) is a serious contender for a Top 10 ranking although the media has yet to compile the poll.
The Patriots took charge in the 1st inning as sophomore ZACH HOGUEISSON doubled to lead off the game, Hail walked and KYLE STOWERS slugged his third homer in as many at-bats.
“The scouts are all over Hogueisson,” Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL said. “I don’t think we’ve had fewer than seven or eight scouts at any of our games.”
Against Kearny Hogueisson was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and might have had more except Mitchell emptied the bench by the third inning.
Stowers, who has a full ride scholarship to Stanford, leads the county with third home runs.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 6, ORANGE GLEN 1 — Foothills Christian jumped on host Orange Glen in Monday’s (Mar. 23) Tri-City Christian’s Eagles Classic for four runs.
That would be more than enough for Foothills Christian’s starter, JOSH LEWIS, who scattered seven hits and struck out nine in a complete game effort.
The Knights (6-3) capitalized on two errors by Orange Glen to score four runs in the opening frame. MARK PROFETA capped the inning with an RBI single.
The Knights added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by RYAN QUINN.
Foothills Christian put the game away in the seventh. Quinn and DANIEL LUCKETT walked and pulled a double steal. A dropped third strike allowed Quinn to score the final run.
“Josh Lewis has pitched great for three games in a row so we didn’t have to use any other pitchers,” noted Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. “Our defense played great.”

Stowers hits two home runs in Patriots' showdown win over Eastlake
By Bill Dickens
© East CountySports.com
EL CAJON (3-21-15) — Just how good are these Christian High Patriots?
In terms of early season performance, coach MIKE MITCHELL’s crew are 5-1, including capturing the championship of the Aztec/Foothiller Classic by upending Eastlake 9-0 Saturday (Mar. 21) at Grossmont’s Joe Gizoni Field.
“From where I stand I think we are a Top 10 team,” Mitchell remarked.
Christian has upgraded their schedule this season and has met the challenges with ease.
KYLE STOWERS blasted two home runs, including a grand slam in Christian’s 6-run 7th inning as the Patriots toppled the Titans. He hit a solo shot leading off the 6th that made it 3-0 and then broke the game open with a bases loaded long ball an inning later.
Stowers, just a junior, has accepted a baseball scholarship to Stanford University.
“The difference between this team as compared to other teams I’ve played on at Christian is it’s an aggressive group, which really helps us,” Stowers noted.
Making their first ever appearance in the Aztec/Foothiller Classic this season, the Patriots were the trophy winners against an upgraded foe from prior years.
The Patriots had won four of five pool play games to reach the championship game against previously undefeated Eastlake (5-1).
BRYCE JURRIES held court against the Titans and came up with a positive verdict. He needed only 74 pitches to turn in the complete game victory over Eastlake, which could muster only three hits. He walked one and struck out 3.
“I think a lot of these teams, because we’re a small school (300), believed we couldn’t compete against the so-called elite,” Jurries said. “We were just hoping we could prove ourselves and I think we did.”
“We had a dodge ball tournament at our school last night (Friday, Mar. 20) and the four finalists were all baseball players,” Mitchell said. “Knowing we had a championship this next morning, I was just hoping none of them would get hurt.”
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 20, HIGH TECH-NC 1 (5 inn.) – Foothills Christian hammered out 17 hits and scored in all five innings of Saturday’s (Mar. 21) Eagles Classic in San Marcos against the High Tech-North County Raptors.
The Knights put together two 6-run innings in the second and fifth.
The key blows in the 2nd were produced by 2-run doubles by TIM GRAY and JOSH LEWIS.
In the 5th inning it was more of the same as the Knights put together four walks and three singles.
“Two freshmen – BAILEY LEWIS and TREVOR SMALLWOOD – pitched the win,” noted Knights coach DAVE LEWIS.

Christian heading to Grossmont for final
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (3-20-15) — The Christian Patriots are making their first appearance in the Aztec/Foothiller Classic this season.
More than that though, the Patriots have won four of five games to reach Saturday’s (Mar. 21) championship game against Eastlake (5-0) at Grossmont’s Joe Gizoni Field at 10:30 a.m.
“Heck, when we started out we were hoping we could just go 2-3 in the tournament,” said Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL. “But our kids refused to throw in the towel – they just keep coming.”
BONITA VISTA 3, VALHALLA 2 — Visiting Valhalla received an outstanding pitching performance from WILSON MILES who had a no-hitter going for 6 1/3 innings, but then Bonita Vista spoiled the party by scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th in Thursday’s (Mar. 19) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament game.
Norsemen closer GARRETT YOCOM couldn’t put the cap on the Valhalla victory.
Valhalla committed its only error of the game to hand the Barons the game-winning tally.
Norseman CASEY O’SULLIVAN slugged a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh, which appeared to put a lock on a Valhalla victory. But it didn’t turn out that way.
RANCHO BERNARDO 3, GRANITE HILLS 2 — In a battle of two of the top pitchers in the county, Rancho Bernardo’s Drew Finley and Granite Hills’ ANDREW BROWN squared off in what came down to a photo finish in Thursday’s (Mar. 19) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament action.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t hang on as Rancho Bernardo (4-1) punched across two tallies to steal the victory.
“We had ‘em right in our hands and we let it slip through,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS. “Brown pitched a brilliant game (allowing one earned run and four hits in six innings).”
Eagles’ relief ace DANIEL VASQUEZ surrendered one run on two hits without getting an out, and that spelled defeat for the Eagles (3-2).
Finley turned in a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out eight and walked one.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 14, MARANATHA CHRISTIAN 2 — RYAN QUINN turned in a sparkling performance on both sides of the plate as the Knights improved to 4-2 in Thursday’s (Mar. 19) Bully’s Tournament contest at Barona.
As a pitcher Quinn allowed seven hits and no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings as he posted the victory. BAILEY LEWIS got the final out.
Quinn was even more effective with the bat as he stroked four hits in five at-bats with a pair of double. He scored three runs and drove in three.
DANIEL LUCKETT was 3 for 3 with three RBI, a triple and four runs scored for Foothills Christian.
TIM GRAY contributed heavily to the 14 hit attack going 3 for 5 with three RBI.
Leadoff hitter EZRA SIMS was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Knights.
Key hits in the contest came early and often. In the first inning Quinn slashed an RBI double to ignite a 3-run express. Luckett ripped on an RBI triple and scored on a base hit by Gray.
Foothills Christian broke the game open in the second with four runs. Gray lined a 2-run single to left field to anchor the rally.
For good measure the Knights drove in five runs in the fifth inning. The lightning bolt in that frame was struck by Quinn, who doubled in two.
CLAIREMONT 6, MOUNT MIGUEL 5 (8 inn.) — The Matadors built a 5-4 lead after six innings of Thursday’s (Mar. 19) Bully’s Tournament contest.
Clairemont tied the game in the seventh, sending it into extra innings and eventually won the game on a bases loaded walk by Jack Fitzmaurice.
Mount Miguel took the lead 5-4 in the sixth inning when CONNER WHITE doubled with two outs and scored on a 2-run homer by ERIC DE LA ROSA.
In the fourth inning De La Rosa tripled home a run and DANIEL SAAVEDRA followed with a triple to score De La Rosa. JOHNNY NICASIO hit a sacrifice fly to plate Saavedra.
MISSION BAY 9, MONTE VISTA 2 — Visiting Mission Bay powered in five runs in the second inning and carried a 9-0 lead into the final frame of Thursday’s (Mar. 19) Bully’s Tournament contest.
Monte Vista was limited to four hits but in the bottom of the seventh scored on RBI singles by CONNOR WHITE and DAVID GARCIA to avoid the shutout.
RAMONA 14, SANTANA 1 — Santana, which has faced five Top 10 teams, avoided a shutout with a run in the seventh inning of Thursday’s (Mar. 19) tournament contest at Ramona.
The Sultans, who surrendered 18 hits, avoided the shutout in the seventh inning due primarily to shoddy defense by Ramona.
AIDEN RASMUSSON singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on an error.
Santana totaled only three hits in the contest.
POWAY 14, EL CAPITAN 6 — Poway blasted three home runs en route to a Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament romp over El Capitan Thursday (Mar. 19) in Lakeside.
The Titans teed off on four El Capitan pitchers for 11 hits.
The Vaqueros sabotaged their own effort by committing seven errors.
Standouts were few for El Capitan. The leader of the pack was JASON MOORMAN was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI in the loss for El Capitan, which fell to 2-3.
Further highlights for the Vaqueros were not available.

EL CAJON (3-19-15) — Junior right-hander NATHAN JARVIS allowed only one run and four hits in five innings as he posted his second win of the season for the Christian Patriots in Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) Aztec-Foothiller Classic action.
Madison, a long-time Christian nemesis, couldn’t keep up with the Patriots who snapped a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning when they scored four runs.
In the breakaway fourth, which led to the Patriots’ 10-4 victory, Christian’s BRYCE JURRIES and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD reached base on singles. Jurries scored on a base hit by TREVOR HOWELL. ZACH HOGUEISSON walked to load the bases and WILL HAIL slashed a 2-run single.
Christian’s onslaught continued in the 6th inning. Howell reached base on an error, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hogueisson walked as did Hail, to load the bases. Howell scored on a balk. KYLE STOWERS hoisted a sacrifice fly and the Warhawks pitched in with an errant pitch.
WEST HILLS 8, SAN DIEGO 2 — West Hills toppled San Diego in Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) Aztec-Foothiller Classic to improve its record to 3-2.
“With the Pack understanding that we must supply the heavy artillery and get our pitchers the support they need, the offense fired off a barrage of SCUD missiles, scoring eight runs with eight total hits, three of the hits were laser guided in the gap and stretched for triples,” reported West Hills coach MIKE (COUGAR) HARWELL.
West Hills pitcher STEVEN TILLEY went the distance, pitching seven strong innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.
"Tilley look very comfortable and he wasted no time getting after the Caver hitters. It’s the kind of performance you expect from a strong right-hander. Worthy of a game ball no doubt..." mentioned Pitching Coach RUDY BAUTISTA.
The Pack had a strong offensive showing led by ALEX SCALCO, who went 2 for 3 with two runs, a triple and also stole home in the first inning.
Other notable Wolf Pack hitters were KRIS AGUILAR, who was 2 for 4 with a run, a triple and two RBI, and NATE LEDFORD who was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBI.
MATER DEI 4, GROSSMONT 3 &mdsah; The Foothillers were playing catch-up from the start as Mater Dei scored all four of its runs in the 4th inning on an error and a hit by pitch in Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) Aztec-Foothiller Classic.
Aaron Colnaneras added a 2-run double for the Crusaders.
Grossmont scored one run in the fifth inning on a groundout by KYLE PINEDA. Pineda stole two bases in the contest.
The Foothillers made a charge to tie the game in the sixth inning. After a base hit by ADAM LOPEZ, CALVIN HARRIS hit a 2-run home run. Farris finished 2 for 4 with two RBI.
MICHAEL BYERLINE also had two hits and scored a run for the Foothillers (1-4).
HELIX 4, CORONADO 1 &mdsah; In the second inning of Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) Aztec-Foothiller Classic action LEE MUTTER singled, advanced on an error and a groundout and scored on a base hit by KEATON CHASE.
In the fifth inning JOE TOILOLO walked, advanced to second on a base hit by Chase and scored on a single by Mutter. After two strikeouts Chase scored on a double by DaSHAWN KEIRSEY. STEVEN ALBA reached base on an error and eventually stole home for the win.
EASTLAKE 10, STEELE CANYON 1 — Undefeated Eastlake (5-0) mowed down Steele Canyon in Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) Aztec-Foothiller Classic.
The game was unofficially declared a knockout when the Titans scored seven runs in the fourth inning to make it 9-0.
The Cougars (0-4) avoided the shutout when AVERY TUCK followed a walk by TANNER LOGAN and brought him home on a triple to deep center in the fifth inning.
MORSE 15, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 — It was another long day for the El Cajon Valley Braves as they suffered a lop-sided loss to the host Morse Tigers in Wednesday’s (Mar. 18) in a Urban SD Invitational game.
On the bright side DONOVAN FOSTER was 2 for 3 with a stolen base for the Braves.
Pitcher HECTOR CARREON turned in two hitless innings and struck out two for El Cajon Valley.

Big fourth inning propels Vaqueros to win
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (3-18-15) — El Capitan scored six runs in fourth inning and then held on to clip host Valhalla 6-5 in the Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament on Tuesday (Mar. 17).
JOHNATHAN SUMMERS keyed the uprising with a 3-run homer in the big inning.
But the onslaught continued as CLAYTON CROMWELL doubled in a run and CHANCE COLSON went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Valhalla had taken the early advantage in the 1st inning as ANDY VAN ANTWERP doubled to left and scored on a single to left by JEFF HOUGHTBY.
The Norsemen’s comeback continued in the fifth innings as JARED SULLIVAN singled to right and Van Antwerp was hit by a pitch. An El Capitan error handed Valhalla its second run of the night.
In the sixth inning is when Valhalla made its primary challenge. With one out RYAN WITHERSPOON walked. LEWIS DIRKES singled to right and JOSH HEIDER got a single to shortstop to load the bases. Sullivan singled to right to score Witherspoon. Van Antwerp hit a sacrifice fly and Houghtby doubled to right, scoring Heider.
GRANITE HILLS 3, HILLTOP 0 — Granite Hills’ blue chip pitching continued as KENNY LAPIERRE locked in a 3-0 shutout while walking none and striking out five in Tuesday’s (Mar. 17) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament contest.
In this his varsity season, Lapierre has made two starts and won both of them.
Granite Hills supplied some power punch to support Lapierre’s pitching. DILLAN SHRUM hammered a 2-run homer in the first inning. Overall the Eagles collected nine hits, including three by Shrum and three by ROBBIE AGERBEEK.
MICHAEL DIFFLEY added the finishing touch with a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Eagles (3-1).
JORDAN VERDON joined the power parade with a double and CHASE GANDY capped the hitting attack with a base hit.
RANCHO BERNARDO 4, SANTANA 3 — No one can accuse coach RIGO LEDEZMA and his Santana Sultans for playing a cream puff schedule this season.
Although the Sultans (1-3) have suffered losses to La Costa Canyon, Granite Hills and Rancho Bernardo, their record is misleading, to say the least. Those losses have come to teams ranked in the top 15 in the nation, including Tuesday’s (Mar. 17) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament setback to Rancho Bernardo.
Santana took a 3-1 lead over the visiting Broncos but couldn’t hold it. Fact is Santana did not garner a single hit over the final three frames, while Rancho Bernardo scored three times.
The Sultans started fast when REECE HERNANDEZ singled, stole second and scored on a double by NOAH NUNEZ. After the Broncos tied it 1-1 in the 2nd Santana regained the advantage in the bottom of the inning as NIK MORA singled but was erased on a bunt by MITCHELL MILLER.
After DAULTON BARRY grounded out to shortstop, AIDAN RASMUSSON singled home Miller.
Santana extended its lead in the fourth frame. TRISTEN SALINAS walked and eventually scored on a base hit by Miller.
MOUNT MIGUEL 11, KEARNY 0 — JAKE CASTILLO continued his torrid hitting streak as he drilled a double, a triple, stole a base and scored three runs in four at-bats at the Matadors blew away Kearny in Tuesday’s (Mar. 17) Bully’s Tournament contest.
In his first four games this season Castillo is batting .650 (13-for-20).
CONNER WHITE slashed a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs in four at-bats for the undefeated Matadors (4-0).
ENRIQUE KELLER and CHRISTIAN GARCIA combined on a 3-hit shutout. Keller worked the first five frames to post his second win in as many decisions.
Other Matadors knocking out 2 hits included ERIC DE LA ROSA, IGUEL OROZCO, DANIEL SAAVEDRA and JOHNNY NICASIO.
Mount Miguel, which hammered out 14 hits, turned the game into a rout with seven runs in the sixth inning.
MONTE VISTA 8, CRAWFORD 2 — Struggling at the plate for the first part of the spring, host Monte Vista connected for seven runs in two innings of Tuesday’s (Mar. 17) Bully’s Tournament contest.
“Any time you can put runs on the board early it gives your whole team a boost,” said Monarchs coach MATT ATKINSON.
Monte Vista got a dose of both offense and defense as the Monarchs clubbed Crawford to improve their record to 3-1.
Seven Monarchs contributed hits, including AUSTIN CAOLE and ANDREW GONZALES, each of whom was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and had two RBI.
RICKY DUPREE was 2 for 2 at the plate and pitched three hitless innings while striking out three as Monte Vista’s starting pitcher.
CONNOR WHITE pitched the final four innings to notch the victory. He surrendered one earned run on three hits, walked none and struck out four.

Busy hot day on the diamond

CHULA VISTA (3-14-15) — The topic of Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Hilltop / Lolita's Tournament activity was more focused on the weather than the games. A near 100 degree oppressive heat seemed to direct the attention of the players more than ground balls and fly balls.
“This was a tough day to play baseball,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS after his Eagles blanked Santana 4-0. “It was hot and nasty. I try to note to my players that this is a typical summer day in the Midwest minor leagues – you get used to it or you’re out.”
Singles by DILLAN SHRUM and ANDREW BROWN, along with a wild pitch, set up a sacrifice fly by BILLY CUMMINGS. IZZY GOMEZ’s RBI single capped the fourth inning frame.
In the sixth inning Granite Hills played longball. MICHAEL DIFFLEY singled and scored on back-to-back triples by DANIEL VASQUEZ and JORDAN VERDON.
That’s all the offense Granite Hills (2-1) would need to back up the shutout pitching of MICHAEL CARTWRIGHT and Vasquez. Cartwright allowed only three hits and struck out five as he posted the win in his first varsity start. Vasquez finished the job by allowing only one hit in one inning.
JACOB ODENKIRK ripped a pair of singles that accounted for half of Santana’s offensive assault.
MONTGOMERY 9, WEST HILLS 7 — The Wolf Pack let what appeared to be a certain victory slip through their fingers on Saturday (Mar. 14) in the Aztec-Foothiller Classic in Santee when Montgomery scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to upend West Hills (2-2).
“You can blame this one on the coach,” said Pack coach MIKE (COUGAR) HARWELL. “I went for a pinch hitter, trying to make a big inning out of it in the top of the sixth and it didn’t work. So I brought in my closer and the bullpen collapsed.”
Rightfielder RYAN CULP was 2 for 4 with three runs scored and 3 RBI in the losing effort. JOEY KRUG was 3 for 4 with two runs scored, one run and an RBI. KRIS AGUILAR was 2 for 4.
CHRISTIAN 5, MIRA MESA 0 — Senior right-hander BRYCE JURRIES pitched a 5-hit shutout as the Patriots muffled the Marauders of Mira Mesa in Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest. He walked two and struck out six.
The Patriots gave Jurries an early cushion by scoring four runs in the opening frame. JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD slashed a 2-run single to cap the fast start. ZACH HOGUEISSON pounded an RBI single to ignite the rally.
Christian added an insurance run in the sixth inning with two outs. Hogueisson reached on an error, moved up on a single by WILL HAIL and scored on a base hit by KYLE STOWERS.
It was another big offensive outing for Hogueisson who was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Hail and Stowers had two hits apiece and left the rest to Jurries.
“Jutties threw a complete game shutout,” noted Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “That was nice – he did a great job today.”
VALHALLA 10, POWAY 7 — JEFF HOUGHTBY was 4 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored to propel the Norsemen past Poway at La Costa Canyon in Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament.
Nonetheless Valhalla was playing catch-up 3-1 through the first three innings. Valhalla fought back to tie it in the fourth at 3-3. LEWIS DIRKES singled to right and advanced to second on a ground out. JARED SULLIVAN laid down a bunt single and Dirkes took third. Sullivan stole second as Dirkes stole home. With two outs Houghtby singled to right, singled Sullivan. DOMENIC DONATO (3 for 3) then doubled to right to tie the game.
Poway counterpunched with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, lifting the Titans to 7-3 advantage.
However, Valhalla did not stand idle as the Norsemen put together a 6-run fifth. Valhalla’s comeback began on walks to COLE HENDERSON and CASEY O’SULLIVAN to ignite the big inning. JAKE BASSETTE singled to center to load the bases and Dirkes walked to drive in a run. RYAN WITHERSPOON ran for Bassette and JOSH HEIDER singled to right, scoring O’Sullivan. Sullivan hit a sacrifice fly scoring Witherspoon, and ANDY VAN ANTWERP walked. Later in the frame Van Antwerp singled to put the Norsemen on top 9-7.
Valhalla scored an insurance run in the sixth inning. Bassette walked and advanced on Dirkes sacrifice bunt. C.J. BROWN pinch ran for Bassette and darted to third on a wild pitch. Heider then slashed an RBI single to right.
For Valhalla, the closer GARRETT YOCOM limited Poway to one hit over three innings and struck out three to earn the save.
MOUNT MIGUEL 8, MISSION BAY 7 — Mount Miguel has not had much of a problem scoring runs this season. The Matadors have plated 32 runs across their first two games of the season.
Mission Bay likewise hasn’t been in any close games, outscoring their opponents 23-4.
With both teams going 2-0 and putting up big numbers, someone was bound to get their first loss in a high scoring Bully’s Tournament game on Saturday (Mar. 14). Mount Miguel won it in come from behind fashion, scoring six runs over the last two innings.
The Matadors started out slow, falling behind the Mission Bay Buccaneers early 2-0 after three innings. Mission Bay would tack on single runs in the fourth through the sixth innings to push their lead to 5-0.
JAKE CASTILLO capped off a 3 for 5 day with five RBI and the game winning single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Setting the stage for Castillo’s game winning blow were basehits by CONNER WHITE, MIGUEL OROZCO, DANIEL SAAVEDRA and JOHNNY NICASIO and a RBI bases-loaded walk to ANDREW MONTIJO.
White finished 3 for 3 with a run scored for the 3-0 Matadors.
ENRIQUE KELLER pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs and five hits while walking one and striking out four to earn the win.
“We have been preaching all winter about patience,” Matadors coach LB HAVIRD said. “Their guy had us shut down over the first few innings. But he eventually started leaving the ball up and we took advantages of their miscues.”
–Chris Davis
MONTE VISTA 3, CLAIREMONT 2 (8 inn.) — Freshman left-hander IVAN PLAZOLA allowed four hits and no earned runs while striking out five in a four inning stint in Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Bully’s Tournament.
Three other Monarch pitchers – RICKY DUPREE, AUSTIN CAOLE and ANDREW GONZALES – held the Chieftains to two hits and no earned runs, but the game went eight innings before it was decided.
It was Plazola’s first varsity start. He walked none.
“He’s going to be a good one,” said Monte Vista coach MATT ATKINSON of Plazola.
Monte Vista took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning on a base hit by TYLER WILLIAMS but the Monarchs failed to maintain the advantage, taking the game into extra innings.
In the 8th Caole singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by J.J. McDANIEL. Andrew Gonzales walked and the runners advanced on a passed ball. With two outs MATT GONZALES drew his third walk of the game. Then XAVIER CHAVOYA got a base hit with the bases loaded to give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead that they wouldn’t lose. It was his second hit of the contest. Caole also had two hits in the game.
Andrew Gonzales pitched a shutout 8th to earn his first win of the season.
SAN YSIDRO 7, STEELE CANYON 3 — Steele Canyon continued to have difficulty bunching its hits in Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest as the Cougars dropped their third decision in as many outings.
Steele Canyon fell behind 3-1 after two innings but fought back to tie it at 3-all in the fourth.
TYLER BECKMAN reached base in the 4th when the centerfielder dropped a fly ball, BRANDON PEARCE walked and ISAII PLACENTIA pinch ran for him and the runners moved up to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs MATTHEW BAGDASAR slapped an infield single to score Placentia for the RBI. The Cougars tied it on a pair of throwing errors by San Ysidro.
San Ysidro regained the lead with a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. That finished Steele Canyon. The Cougars were limited to five hits – nobody had more than one.
Three Steele Canyon pitchers rationed San Ysidro batters to 4 earned runs. AVERY TUCK allowed only one earned run in four innings but was tagged with the loss.
HELIX 11, SAN DIEGO 1 — CONNOR KONISHI and HUNTER ISBELL each hit a 2-run double as the Highlanders submarined San Diego Saturday (Mar. 14) for their third win in four decisions in an Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest.
Helix broke the game open with nine runs in the first two innings. In those two innings the Cavers pitchers contributed three hit batters and three walks.
Junior JACK STONACH was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, while LEE MUTTER slashed a pair of hits in four at-bats for the Highlanders.
RANCHO BUENA VISTA 1, EL CAPITAN 0 — Two defensive gems by visiting Rancho Buena Vista Saturday (Mar. 14) denied El Capitan a potential Aztec-Foothiller Classic victory.
In the first inning the Vaqueros loaded the bases and appeared to have a 3-run triple in the bank, only to have the Longhorns leftfielder make a circus catch to quell the rally and end the inning.
In the seventh inning the Vaqueros put runners in scoring position at second and third only to have a squeeze bunt backfire.
But the Horns weren’t done as the next RBV hitter slashed a go-ahead RBI single and that was enough to back up the complete game pitching of Thomas Savich.
CHANCE COLSON surrendered the only run of the game in the top of the seventh as he allowed 8 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 1, GROSSMONT 0 — Jaylon King hit a high chopper for La Jolla Country Day in Saturday’s (Mar. 14) Aztec-Foothiller Classic to score Ryan Kawano in the bottom of the sixth to give the host Torreys a 1-0 victory over the struggling Foothillers.
The hardluck loser for Grossmont was CALVIN FARRIS, who surrendered one run and four hits in a complete game effort. He walked none and struck out two.

Don't look past Wolf Pack
By Bill Dickens

SANTEE (3-14-15) — Some have overlooked the West Hills Wolf Pack from making any waves in Grossmont Conference baseball this season.
The Pack which has won two of its first three games, was led by the hot bat of COLE PENDLETON (3-for-4 with a double and a sacrifice fly).
“This was a ballgame that could have gone either way in the seventh,” said West Hills coach MIKE (COUGAR) HARWELL. “However, obviously we like the way it went today.”
The Wolf Pack won a wild one over San Ysidro 12-11 in Friday’s (Mar. 13) Aztec-Foothiller Classic. Trailing 7-1 after two innings, West Hills battled to make it 11-6 after six innings. The Pack continued to battle till the end.
The Wolf Pack scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh for the walk off win.
On the mound, DONAVON McCRYSTAL came on in the second inning, pitching four scoreless innings giving up only one base hit to keep the Pack in the game. Big right-hander SPENCER MOYER came in and finished the last two innings, giving up four unearned runs and stole the victory in the end.
The Wolf Pack cranked out 16 hits on the way with a total team effort led by KRIS AGUILAR 2-3, (1)3b ,(1)bb (1)R,(2)RBI, NATE LEDFORD 2-2 ,(1)sac, (2)2b, (1)R, (1) RBI, BRYCE GIBSON 2-3 (2)R, (2) RBI.
HELIX 7, MONTGOMERY 1 — Helix put away pitching power Montgomery with five runs in the first inning of Friday’s (Mar. 13) Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest.
After the Aztecs pushed across a run in the first inning the Highlanders came back on a base hit by CONNER KONISHI, a double by MATTHEW RICHARDSON and a double steal. DaSHAWN KEIRSEY walked to load the bases. LEE MUTTER singled in a run and HUNTER ISBELL got hit by a pitch and drove in a run. Then DAVID JOSEPHSON singled to left to drive in a run.
In the fourth inning Konishi slashed a double.
Mutter pitched the first five innings, allowing one run and two hits to pick up the win.
CHRISTIAN 5, STEELE CANYON 1 — Right-hander JOHN GERSHOW scattered seven hits and allowed only one earned run as the Patriots (2-1) skated past visiting Steele Canyon (0-2) in Friday’s (Mar. 13) Aztec-Foothiller Classic action.
Christian took the lead in the second inning on a base hit by CHASE WEHSENER, a single to left to make it 1-0. The Patriots padded their lead with a run in the third when NATHAN JARVIS was hit by a pitch to score TREVOR HOWELL, making it 2-0.
In the fourth inning Christian tacked on two runs as ZACH HOGUEISSON hoisted a sacrifice fly to right field. WILL HAIL capped the inning with an RBI single.
Christian picked up its final run on a wild pitch.
Steele Canyon avoided the shutout when JOSH ESQUIBEL slapped an RBI single to left field for his seventh RBI in three games.
“It was a good win,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “We got 15 players in the game – everybody contributed. It was a good team win today.
“I’m glad we played Steele Canyon now instead of later. They’re young but they have some talent and they’re going to be good.”
MADISON 5, GROSSMONT 3 — The visiting Foothillers (1-2) were silent on offense for the majority of the Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest on Friday (Mar. 13) at Madison.
Although it doesn’t show in the boxscore, the key play of the game was in the 1st inning when the Foothillers loaded the bases only to be denied when the Madison left fielder made a diving catch to end the inning.
Grossmont came right back in the second inning, putting runners at first and second only to be shut down again.
In the game Grossmont left 12 runners on base.
The Foothillers came to life in the sixth inning when EVAN McCARTHY slashed an RBI single, cutting Madison’s lead to four runs.
The rally continued in the seventh when Grossmont loaded the bases and scored two runs – one on a bases loaded walk to JAMES HINDORFF and CAMERON HENDERSON. But the rally stalled after that.

Come from behind magic for Santana
By Bill Dickens

CHULA VISTA (3-13-15) — One of the surprise teams in the Grossmont Conference this year might be the Santana Sultans. No question they pulled the rug out from under host Hilltop in Thursday’s (Mar. 12) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament as they scored twice in the final frame to pull out a 3-2 victory.
After falling behind the host Lancers 2-0 after three innings, Santana (1-1) began its comeback with a basehit by MITCHELL MILLER in the fourth. That set the drama for the final frame.
A one-out single by DAULTON BARRY lit a fire to the comeback. XAVIER BAZA pinch ran for Barry and AIDAN RASMUSSON and TRISTEN SALINAS each walked to load the bases. REECE HERNANDEZ singled to score Baza, tying the game at 2-all.
With the bases loaded and one down, CHRISTIAN MENDEZ slugged a sacrifice fly to the centerfielder, which proved to score the game-winning run as Rasmusson came in.
That made a winner of reliever JACOB ODENKIRK, who retired the side in order with one strikeout in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore starter Salinas scattered eight hits over six innings but did not allow an earned run for Santana.
EL CAPITAN 6, BONITA VISTA 2 — KENNY OLHAUSER and SEAN DUNNE combined to check Bonita Vista on 4 hits as the Vaqueros won Thursday’s (Mar. 12) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament contest at Bonita Vista.
The Vaqueros leaped in front of the host Barons with four runs in the first inning. TRISTAN DUNCAN launched the anchor shot with a two-run double.
At that point El Capitan coach CLAYTON CURO turned to the short game as DAWSON McCLANAHAN and Olhauser drove in runs with squeeze bunts.
That would be all the runs the Vaqueros (1-1) would need against the Barons (2-1).
El Capitan finished with 8 hits, including a double and a single by MYLES EMMERSON.
MOUNT MIGUEL 11, SD-SOUTHWEST 0 — Early signs of the Mount Miguel Matadors offensive attack indicate that this should be a ballclub that should score runs by the bushel.
In the first 11 frames this year Mount Miguel scored 32 runs on 15 hits under first year coach LB HAVIRD.
ENRIQUE KELLER was 4-for-4 in the Bully’s Tournament romp at San Diego Southwest, scoring three runs. DANIEL SAAVEDRA had only one hit but drove in four runs for the Matadors, CHRISTIAN GARCIA was 3-for-5 with a run scored. ERIC DE LA ROSA was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Four Mount Miguel pitchers shared in spinning a 3-hit shutout with JAKE CASTILLO picking up the win.
“The team we played today wasn’t very strong – wasn’t quite as strong as tams we’re going to play in the future,” said Havird. “We played pretty well in winter league. We played Christian and could not have played any worse. Playing these two games we’re good for where we are now. I expect things to get tougher from now on.”
MONTE VISTA 5, KEARNY 2 — For one of the few times in the last two seasons the Monte Vista Monarchs jumped out to a sizable early lead as they manufactured a 5-0 advantage over visiting Kearny that held up for five innings in Thursday’s (Mar. 12) Bully’s Tournament action.
CONNOR WHITE and SHAUN CAIN limited the Komets to five hits and one earned run while striking out eight between them. Cain pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and picked up the victory. Of course, pitching with an early lead, as these pitchers were afforded, made working from the hill not quite as challenging.
In the bottom of the 1st the Monarchs scored four runs as White provided the charge, doubling in two. ANDREW GONZALES and MATT GONZALES each helped swell the lead with an RBI single apiece.
Kearny pecked away with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the Monarchs evened their record at 1-1.
AUSTIN CAOLE ignited a 5-hit attack with a pair of singles in four at-bats.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 8, ESCONDIDO 7 — Foothills Christian took a 7-3 lead into the final frame of Thursday’s (Mar. 12) Bully’s Tournament contest at Barona and nearly let it slip through their fingers as visiting Escondido tied the game with four tallies in seventh inning.
But Foothills refused to fold, staging a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs TREVOR SMALLWOOD ignited the rally with a walk, and TRISTIN BARLING singled to left. That set the stage for JOSH LEWIS’ game-winning double, which scored Smallwood giving the Knights their 3rd win in as many decisions. Barling finished with three of the Knight’s 14 hits.
RYAN QUINN, NATHAN YEAGER, MARK PROFETA and TIM GRAY also contributed two hits apiece. Profeta also had two RBI for the Knights.
LA COSTA CANYON 3, GRANITE HILLS 0 — The Mavericks continued to bully the Grossmont Conference as La Costa Canyon posted its second straight shutout Thursday (Mar. 12), blanking Granite Hills in the Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament. LCC opened the season with a 6-0 whitewashing of Santana.
The Eagles were forced to stare down the barrel of LCC ace Ethan Abrams, who limited the Grossmont Conference powerhouse to only three hits.
Opposing pitcher, junior ANDREW BROWN smacked a double and ANDY LOWRY and CHASE GANDY each had singles for Granite Hills (1-1).
The Eagles, who also drew three walks, left 11 runners on base.
CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 9, VALHALLA 1 — Valhalla took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by ANDY VAN ANTWERP in the thirrd inning of Thursday’s (Mar. 12) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament game against top-seeded Cathedral Catholic.
But after that it was a landslide victory for the host Dons (2-0).
Cathedral snapped a 1-1 tie with five runs in the fourth inning. Three Cathedral Catholic pitchers, including ace Jonathan Pendergast – a 6-foot-3 righthander – combined to limit the Norsemen to five hits.

Schubert, Lewis and Krug combine for shutout for Wolf Pack
By Bill Dickens

SAN DIEGO (3-12-15) — Of the six East County teams that took the field in Wednesday’s (Mar. 11) tournament play, only one came away with the victory.
Some might say it was a bit of a surprise but West Hills coach MIKE (Cougar) HARWELL didn’t think so.
“It’s not like it’s time to brag about anything,” Harwell said. “We just started, but I’m pretty happy with the win.”
GABRIEL SCHUBERT, CLAYTON LEWIS and JOEY KRUG combined on a three hit shutout for the Wolf Pack (1-1) in the Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest. The trio combined for eight strikeouts in the 2-0 victory.
The only runs of the game were in the second inning when the Pack pushed across a pair – one apiece by Krug and BRYCE GIBSON.
LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 6, CHRISTIAN 3 — Christian’s sophomore ZACH HOGUEISSON slammed solo home runs in the third and fourth innings of Wednesday’s (Mar. 11) Aztec-Foothiller Classic off La Jolla Country Day’s Dylan Robertson, and finished 3-for-3 in the Patriots’ loss.
After Hogueisson tied the game with a home run in the fourth, Christian’s offense went stagnant and the Torreys cruised to the finish line despite being outhit by the Patriots 9-6.
“This is a really frustrating game because LJCD scored five runs after two outs, and we didn’t score any,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL.
WILL HAIL also had three hits but all were single in four at-bats. BRYCE JURRIES was 2-for-4, but Christian left 10 runners on base.
SAN YSIDRO 6, GROSSMONT 2 &mdsah; By the time the visiting Grossmont Foothillers found their offense in the fourth inning they were trailing the San Ysidro Cougars 5-0 in Wednesday’s (Mar. 11) Aztec-Foothiller Classic in South Bay.
The Hillers snapped the shutout as TIGER GUERRERO singled, advanced to second on an error by the shortstop and scored on a basehit to right field by CALVIN FARRIS.
Grossmont, which outhit San Ysidro 8-6, scored its second run in the fifth inning as JAKE HARR tripled and scored on a two out single by ADAM LOPEZ. Lopez, Guerrero and Farris each had two hits.
“We just have to keep trying to get better every day,” said Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO.
EASTLAKE 2, HELIX 0 — Eastlake’s Julian Escobedo and Mack Thompson combined for a four hit shutout of the Helix Highlanders in Wednesday’s (Mar. 11) Aztec-Foothiller Classic contest at Eastlake.
“Escobedo is the real deal,” observed Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “Of course, we helped him. We were too busy taking uncompetitive swings.”
Nobody for the Highlanders (1-1) could create a multiple hit game.
The hardluck loser for Helix was DaSHAWN KEIRSEY who surrendered two runs in four innings. ADRIAN SANCHEZ pitched two shutout innings of relief.
MADISON 10, STEELE CANYON 4 — Host Steele Canyon wasted solid relief pitching by ANGEL TORRES, who allowed one hit in 4 1/3 shutout innings as visiting Madison used two big innings to roll the Cougars in Wednesday’s (Mar. 11) Aztec-Foothiller Classic action. Torres walked 2 and struck out five.
On the offensive side freshman JOSH ESQUIBEL provided the majority of Steele Canyon’s punch with three hits in four at-bats. He slashed a 2-run single in the first inning, cutting the Warhawks’ lead in half.
After Madison blasted Steele Canyon starter LANDON SCHIRER for six runs, giving the Warhawks a 10-2 advantage in the 3rd inning, the Cougars halted the skid as AVERY TUCK singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Esquibel.
Steele Canyon looked as though it was headed for a big inning in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded and one out. Esquibel singled in his fourth run but that’s when the rally stalled.

EL CAJON (3-11-15) — Granite Hills may be the top team in San Diego County but that’s still to be determined.
The Eagles opened the season in Tuesday’s (Mar. 10) Hilltop / Lolita’s Tournament action by blanking Ramona 6-0.
ROBBIE AGERBEEK drove in two runs, including a first inning double and a third inning single.
KENNY LAPIERRE pitched a complete game 5-hitter, walked one and struck out seven in his first varsity start.
The Eagles put the game away in the 1st inning. With one out JACOB VERDON singled and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder. A single by DILLAN SHRUM put runners at the corners. DANIEL VASQUEZ singled to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
ANDY LOWRY, who was 3 for 3 in the contest, drove in Shrum to make it 2-0. Agerbeek doubled to score Vasquez for a 3-0 score.
Granite Hills broke the game open in the third on singles by Vasquez, Lowry, Agerbeek and a sacrifice fly by AUSTIN DABBS.

Monte Vista missed a chance to tie the game on a long fly ball to center field, but the Cardinals corralled it for the final out.
Williams and freshman DIEGO SANDOVAL finished with two hits apiece.
Monte Vista wasted pitching by AUSTIN CAOLE, who allowed no hits and one run. ANDREW GONZALES pitched four innings, allowing two unearned runs and struck out four. He was tagged with the loss.

MOUNT MIGUEL 21, CRAWFORD 1 (4 inn.) — Matadors coach LLOYD (LB) HAVIRD celebrated his debut as Mount Miguel’s head coach with the rout of Crawford in a non-league encounter Tuesday (Mar. 10) in the city.
The Matadors capitalized on 10 walks and 8 hit batters to go along with 15 hits.
Senior ALEX ESTRADA pitched two shutout innings with four strikeouts for the win and hammered out three hits in four at-bats in the Mount Miguel onslaught.
Ten Matadors contributed to the siege. ANGEL ABARCA slashed a 3-run triple and ANDREW MONTIJO had a pair of doubles. JOHNNY NICASIO, VINCENT ALVAREZ and ERIC De La ROSA each hit a double.
Havird has coached at Mount Miguel primarily in football for 15 years.
The veteran coach said, “When (former baseball coach) JASON BABINEAU departed for El Cajon Valley for an administrative position, I wanted to keep the positive things that he’d done going. He left me a bunch of gritty guys.
“We can’t make errors but if we can play good defense we’ll be OK.”

EL CAJON (3-8-15) — The host Grossmont Foothillers capitalized on eight walks from San Diego pitching to topple the Cavers 9-2 at Joe Gizoni Field in the opening round of the Aztec-Foothiller Tournament on Saturday (Mar. 7).
The Foothillers started their barrage in the first inning, merging four walks, an RBI single by MICHAEL BYERLINE and a sacrifice fly by BRAEDEN BARR, plus an error by the San Diego third baseman to take a 4-1 lead.
Grossmont put the game in the bank in the 6th inning with three runs. EVAN McCARTHY slashed an RBI single in the knockout frame.
The Cavers continued to walk players and committed three errors to turn the game into a blowout victory for Grossmont.
Grossmont’s junior right-hander CALVIN FARRIS flirted with a no-hitter as he allowed only six hits, no earned runs, no walks and struck out four to earn the win.
JAYDEN LOMBARDO struck out three batters in the final frame to lock up the win.
HELIX 9, MIRA MESA 7 — CONNER KONISHI, LEE MUTTER and JACK STRONACH shared on a 7-hitter in Saturday’s (Mar. 7) Aztec-Foothiller Classic. Konishi got the win for Helix.
