RANCHO SAN DIEGO (4-30-15) — Granite Hills senior DANIEL VASQUEZ pitched a complete game 2-hitter and struck out 12 in Wednesday’s (Apr. 29) Grossmont Hills League 7-2 victory over Steele Canyon to maintain their 1-game circuit lead.
The victory allowed the No. 4 ranked Eagles to collect their sixth win in a row.
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 as Steele Canyon scored two runs on an RBI single by JOEY GERARDI and a fielder’s choice by BRANDON PEARCE.
Granite Hills tied the game in the third inning as MICHAEL DIFFLEY doubled and JORDAN VERDON belted a 2-run homer.
The Eagles snapped the tie with three runs in the sixth inning. SEAN ROSS broke the tie with a base hit, which was his second game-winning RBI of the season. ROBBIE AGERBEEK doubled in a run and Diffley singled in another.
In the seventh inning ANDY LOWRY doubled in a run and Ross reached base on an error as the Eagles put the game away.
EL CAPITAN 4, MONTE VISTA 1 — DYLAN WANNAMAKER, a senior right-hander spun a complete game 3-hitter Wednesday (Apr. 29) and struck out fourth as he hoisted his record to 2-0 and helped the Vaqueros maintain their second place in the Grossmont Valley League race.
El Capitan broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning as SAM MELERO and VICTOR CARLINO each singled. MYLES EMMERSON swatted a third base hit and JASON MOORMAN slugged an RBI double.
The Vaqueros eventually broke the game open in the sixth inning. CLAY CROMWELL reached base on an error and scored on a double by DAWSON McCLANAHAN. Melero then singled in McClanahan to make it 4-1.
Melero finished 2-for-3 with one RBI for the Vaqueros.
HELIX 10, GROSSMONT 0 — Crafty sophomore CONNER KONISHI spun a 3-hitter through six innings in Wednesday’s (Apr. 29) Grossmont Hills League contest with rival Grossmont at Joe Gizoni Field. The southpaw surrendered only three hits as he dominated the Foothillers.
The Highlanders scored eight runs in the first three innings and then ran away with Konishi supplying the handcuffs. Konishi needed only 74 pitches to put the Highlanders back on the bus to Helix.
The Foothillers mustered only three hits in the loss.
Bottom line though is the Highlanders get two more chances at facing off against the Foothillers. The Highlanders need both wins and a little bit of luck if they are to upend Granite Hills for the GHL title.
MOUNT MIGUEL 4, WEST HILLS 3 — Trailing 3-1 after five innings, the Matadors punched in a run in the sixth as pinch hitter CONNER WHITE doubled. Two outs later JAKE CASTILLO doubled him home.
But the uphill climb continued for Mount Miguel, which scored three runs in the seventh inning to pull out a come-from-behind Grossmont Valley League victory on Wednesday (Apr. 29).
In the final inning the Matadors (10-10, 4-3) drew a one-out walk to ERIC DE LA ROSA. ANDREW MONTIJO then doubled and MIGUEL OROZCO followed with a base hit to score De La Rosa and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Mount Miguel’s DANIEL SAAVEDRA singled up the middle score Montijo and tie the game at 3-3. JOHNNY NICASIO reached base on an error by the first baseman, which allowed Orozco to score the winning run.
It was a clean steal.
“This is the first time we finished the game that we took the lead late,” said Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “We’ve lost the lead in five games where we took the late lead and lost. So this was a big game for us.”
West Hills mustered only two hits, the major blow being a 3-run homer by KRIS AGUILAR in the third inning which gave the Wolf Pack (8-12, 3-4) the early lead.
SANTANA 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 1 — AIDAN RASMUSSON rattled off four hits and drove in five runs to spark Santana to a lop-sided Grossmont Valley League victory over the Braves at El Cajon Valley on Wednesday (Apr. 29).
Rasmusson produced the only extra base hit of the game with a double.
REECE HERNANDEZ chipped in with three hits and four runs scored in five at-bats for the Sultans who maintained their 2-game GVL lead, which features a 2-game spread over El Capitan.
COLTON CALVERT pitched 5 shutout innings and struck out six to earn his second win in as many decisions for Santana.
JACOB ODENKIRK finished off the Braves with two strong innings in relief.

Wehsener drives Christian to a win on the peninsula
By Bill Dickens

CORONADO (4-29-15) — It’s a beautiful setting but it plays tough because of the wind. And Tuesday (Apr. 28) the wind was stiff on the peninsula.

Sophomore first baseman CHASE WEHSENER drove in three runs in Christian’s 7-2 victory over the Islanders on Tuesday. He was 1-for-4 with 3 RBI and had the key blow, a 2-run double that ignited Christian’s 3-run rally in the sixth inning.
Wehsener rang up eight RBI in the Patriots’ three game Central League sweep over Coronado.
The Patriots (19-2, 6-0) turned the game into a blowout with four runs in the seventh inning.
KYLE STOWERS had an RBI double and Wehsener drove in a run on a groundout. The rally continued as BRYCE JURRIES swatted an RBI single and pinch hitter MITCHELL GRIFFIN closed the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Christian’s pitching kept a stranglehold on Coronado as starter Stowers pitched two shutout innings and struck out four. JOHN GERSHOW allowed one run in two innings and CAMDEN BESSONE allowed one hit and no earned runs in three frames to earn the victory.
OLYMPIAN 4, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 1 — For the first time in more than a month Foothills Christian suffered a loss in Tuesday’s (Apr. 28) non-league game at Olympian.
The loss for the Knights (16-4) snapped a 10-game winning streak.
Olympian broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the 6th frame and improved to 15-5.

Jurries lifts Patriots even higher
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-28-15) — BRYCE JURRIES is known more for his pitching skills, but the senior right-hander proved that he can do more than pitch.
A clutch performer, Jurries lifted a bases loaded sacrifice fly ball to right field with the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th Monday (Apr. 27) to give the Christian High Patriots a solid grip on the lead of the Central League race. The Patriots are now 18-2 and 5-0 in league.
It was Jurries third game-winning RBI.
The Patriots came up with the big hit against the Coronado Islanders in the final inning. Christian combined two hits, two walks and a game winning sacrifice fly to overcome the Islanders 4-3.
TREVOR HOWELL collected his third hit in four at-bats to lead off the seventh inning. ZACH HOGUEISSON followed with his second hit with nobody out. WILL HAIL advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and KYLE STOWERS drew a walk and Jurries blasted the game-winning hit.
“People think I only care about pitching,” Jurries said. “I mainly care about pitching but I love hitting as well.”
But it was Jurries’ bat that decided the issue Monday.
“The guy threw a curveball on the outside of the plate, and that’s what I was looking for,” Jurries said of his sacrifice fly ball. “I don’t care what it takes for us to win – whether I’m hitting or pitching. I’ll take it any way we can get it.”
Christian travels to Coronado for a rematch tomorrow (Tuesday, Apr. 28) at 3:30.
GRANITE HILLS 1, GROSSMONT 0 — ANDREW BROWN pitched a 2-hit shutout as Granite Hills took command of first place of the Grossmont Hills League over Helix on Monday (Apr. 27) as they edged visiting Grossmont in a league showdown.
The Eagles scored rapidly with the game’s only run coming in the 1st inning. JORDAN VERDON singled and DILLAN SHRUM doubled. DANIEL VASQUEZ stroked the game-winning base hit.
This was a battle of pitching and limited offense.
CALVIN FARRIS allowed only six hits and one run for Grossmont, but his generosity was too much.
VALHALLA 8, STEELE CANYON 4 — The Norsemen scored in every inning as they knocked off Grossmont Hills League rival Steele Canyon on Monday (Apr. 27) at Valhalla.
The Norsemen received a surprisingly strong start from COLE HENDERSON (2-1) scattered eight hits and struck out five in a 5.1 stretch to guide Valhalla to the victory.
In the first inning LEWIS DIRKES walked, advanced to second on a balk and scored on a base hit by JEFF HOUGHTBY, which proved to be his fourth game-winning RBI to lead East County.
Valhalla extended its lead to 2-0 in the second inning as BROCK MOSIER scored on a wild pitch.
In the 3rd inning ANDY VAN ANTWERP ignited a rally with an infield single. He stole second and Houghtby followed with a walk. DOMENIC DONATO lined into a double play. Houghtby then stole second and scored on a single to left by Henderson.
The Cougars’ AVERY TUCK broke up the Valhalla shutout bid with a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning.
After building a 7-1 lead Valhalla’s JARED SULLIVAN scored on a base hit by Mosier in the fifth frame.
In the sixth inning Steele Canyon added two more runs as Tuck and JOEY GERARDI both doubled. Tuck scored on Gerardi’s hit and ZACH HART doubled to left field, scoring Gerardi.
The Cougars added a final run in the seventh after MATTHEW BAGDASAR singled, moved to second and third on passed balls, and scored when ROBERT DIAZ hit a sacrifice fly to center.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 17, SD-SOUTHWEST 0 — Foothills Christian used a multiple hit attack to blowout San Diego Southwest in Monday’s (Apr. 27) non-league action.
BAILEY LINK banged out four hits and a double in six at-bats with two RBI for the Knights (16-3), while EZRA SIMS ripped four hits in five at-bats with a pair of RBI and two runs scored as Foothills Christian scored in six of the seven innings.
Overall the Knights riddled SD-Southwest for 23 hits.
Added to the attack was TIM GRAY who was 3-for-6 with two RBI and a double.
The onslaught was spread evenly as DANIEL LUCKETT was 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBI and a double. Designated hitter TREVOR SMALLWOOD came up big for the Knights with two hits, three RBI and a pair of runs in three at-bats.
“Everybody we put out there hit the ball hard, including the guys coming off the bench,” noted Foothills Christian coach DAVE LEWIS.

Sultans stay ahead of the pack with Salinas' arm

SPRING VALLEY (4-26-15) © Santana maintained a 2-game edge in the Grossmont Valley League and posted its 10th straight win Saturday (Apr. 25) as it skated past Monte Vista on both ends of a double header.
In the opening game TRISTEN SALINAS pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout and struck out 6 in a 6-0 victory for the Sultans.
Santana had to go overtime to avoid an upset by Monte Vista, earning a 4-2 victory in 10 innings in the nightcap.
In Game 1 CHRISTIAN MENDEZ blasted a 2-run homer in the 5th inning which extended Santana’s lead to 6-0. Mendez was 3-for-8 with a pair of game-winning hits in the doubleheader.
In the two games Sultans leadoff hitter JACOB ODENKIRK was 5-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Santana pitching in the second game was divided between NOAH NUNEZ and DAULTON BARRY, with each hurler going five innings as the Monarchs scored only two runs.
ANDREW GONZALES slugged a 2-run home run in the third inning of the second game to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead at the time.
Nine games remain in the regular season, which gives Santana the edge and puts the pressure on El Capitan.
G1: EL CAPITAN 10, WEST HILLS 0
G2: EL CAPITAN 3, WEST HILLS 2 (8 inn.) — The Vaqueros received solid pitching from TRISTAN DUNCAN and CHANCE COLSON as they executed a sweep against West Hills in Saturday’s (Apr. 25) to remain two games out of first place Santana in the Grossmont Valley League.
In the opener Duncan (4-1) was touched up for 10 hits in a complete game effort, but did not allow a walk or a hit batter while striking out 11. It took him 99 pitches – 74 strikes – to nail down a 10-0 victory over the Wolf Pack in Game 1.
SAM MELERO was 3-for-9 with a pair of RBI in the opener. His totals included a double and a triple.
El Capitan scored five runs in the seventh inning to turn the game into a blowout.
The Vaqueros squeezed out the victory in the second game in the 8th inning as MYLES EMMERSON doubled and MICHAEL LARWA ran for him. KEN OHLHAUSER doubled to give El Capitan a 3-2 lead.
Colson allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings, but hung around long enough to get the win. JORDAN FRANTZ pitched a shutout eighth to save the victory.
G1: MOUNT MIGUEL 19, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 (6 inn.)
G2: MOUNT MIGUEL 15, EL CAJON VALLEY 4 — Host Mount Miguel rolled off a 34-4 scoring edge over visiting El Cajon Valley in Saturday’s (Apr. 25) Grossmont Valley League doubleheader action.
JOHNNY NACASIO was 7-for-8 with seven runs scored in the Matadors’ sweep, while JAKE CASTILLO was 6-for-9 with fove RBI. ENRIQUE KELLER joined the onslaught by going 5-for-9 with six RBI.
For good measure, Mount Miguel got a solid pitching performance in Game one from ERIC DE LA ROSA who pitched a 4-hit shutout in a game shortened after six innings. He also struck out seven as he evened his record to two
In the nightcap sophomore ANGEL MELGAR pitched four innings and allowed only two hits and no earned runs while striking out five.
“We worked on hitting to the opposite field today,” said Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “It’s one thing to do that in practice but it’s nice to be able to use it effectively in a game.”
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 11, HOOVER 6 :mdash; Foothills Christian pounded out 15 hits en route to its 10th straight win with Saturday’s (Apr. 25) non-league win over the host Hoover Cardinals.
The issue was decided early as Foothills Christian took a 9-3 lead after three innings.
RYAN QUINN was a triple threat for the Knights as he went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and two stolen bases.
JOSH LEWIS was also 3 for 4, and leadoff man BAILEY LINK was 2 for 4.
“Everybody hit the ball really well today,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. The two heroes were freshman TREVOR SMALLWOOD, who came in the game in the 2nd inning and gave us four innings of good pitching. The other was LIAM CAREY. He’s been out all year with a bad back. He came in and pitched two innings.
“This was our fourth game in five days and those two guys came in and pitched. Our regular pitchers were tired so our reserves saved us.”

Lapierre goes the distance for Granite Hills
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-25-15) — KENNY LAPIERRE (3-1) pitched a complete game victory for Granite Hills Friday (Apr. 24) over the Grossmont Foothillers. The 5-1 win put the Eagles in the Grossmont Hills League lead at 9-6, 3-0.
This is a close race as Helix (12-6, 3-1) moved into the No. 2 spot, while Grossmont (13-9, 2-1) fell to third place.
For Granite Hills it’s been a different look. This team has traditionally been a ballclub that hits for a living. But pitching has been the name of the game for the Eagles so far this season.
These two teams combined for 10 singles. The biggest blow was a 2-run home run by the Eagles’ DILLAN SHRUM. It was his second of the year.
“You don’t spot a team a 3-run lead in four innings and hope to come back,” said Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO.
ANDREW BROWN, DARIAN COSSIO and Vasquez swatted three hits apiece for Granite Hills. Vasquez also had a pair of doubles.
For Grossmont BAILEY VAN EVERY scored the only run.
STEELE CANYON 3, VALHALLA 2 — Steele Canyon and the Norsemen of Valhalla continue to struggle offensively in Grossmont Hills League play. Fact is, the two teams are tied for last at 1-4 in the circuit.
Steele Canyon (6-13) snapped a six-game losing streak by edging Valhalla in a league showdown with the Norsemen on Friday (Apr. 24).
GEOVANNY QUIROS allowed only two earned runs in six innings as he picked up the victory for the Cougars. LANDON SCHIRER pitched a hitless inning in the seventh to earn the save for Steele Canyon.
Steele Canyon pulled off the victory with two runs in the fourth frame and one in the sixth. In the 4th MATTHEW BAGDASAR singled to left and eventually advanced on a passed ball.
One out later SERGIO ALCAREZ slammed a home run, allowing the Cougars to tie the Norsemen at 2-2 after four frames.
Steele Canyon took the lead for keeps in the sixth. ISAII PLASCENCIA singled to right and ROBERT DIAZ ran for him. Bagdasar was called out for catcher’s interference, which forced Diaz to return to first base. Unhappy with the call, Bagdasar was ejected for throwing his bat.
JOSH ESQUIBEL singled to center, scoring Diaz with what proved to be the winning run.
JEFF HOUGHTBY led Valhalla’s meager attack with a single and a double in three at-bats.
The Norsemen pushed one across in the 1st inning as LEWIS DIRKES singled to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Houghtby drove in Dirkes with a base hit to right field.
Valhalla extended its lead to 2-0 in the third frame. With two outs Houghtby doubled to center and scored on a base hit by DOMENIC DONATO.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 4, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 2 — The Foothills Christian Knights proved they’re pretty good mountain climbers as they scaled the foothills in search of Red Hawks on Friday (Apr. 24) for a non-league game at Mountain Empire.
Foothills Christian’s BAILEY LINK led off the game with a double, moving to third on KONNER VON DER LEITH’s groundout. RYAN QUINN singled to score Link for the Knights’ first run.
In the third inning Quinn doubled and DANIEL LUCKETT tripled to score him.
JOSH LEWIS singled to lead off the fourth inning, moved to second on a balk and to third on MARK PROFETA’s 6-to-3 groundout. Two outs later, Link singled in Josh Lewis and Von Der Leith doubled in Link.
“Link, a sophomore, is the one who makes our engine run,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. “He made two diving stops at shortstop today. He came in to pitch with two runners on in the seventh inning and struck out two guys.”

Big innings lead to two East County wins
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-24-15) — This was a day of the big inning – times two.
Foothills Christian scored 17 runs Thursday (Apr. 23) in the 5th inning of an Ocean League contest over San Diego Jewish Academy resulting in a 20-5 victory.
Meanwhile Christian High scored 15 first inning runs in a Central League encounter with Lincoln on Thursday (Apr. 23) that the Patriots turned into a 17-2 victory.
CHRISTIAN 17, LINCOLN 2 — Three pitches into the game Christian took a 1-0 lead on a double by ZACK HOGUEISSON and that set the stage for the onslaught.
The Patriots pounded out nine hits in a row, which included a 3-run shot by Hogueisson and a 2-run shot by KYLE STOWERS.
Christian’s first turn at-bat lasted just under an hour as they took a 15-0 lead. The Patriots collected 15 hits in their opening turn at-bat. In fact the Patriots batted around twice in the opening frame.
Eight Patriots contributed multiple hit games in the league encounter.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “It was the most incredible inning I’ve ever encountered. And we didn’t just hit pop fly singles. We hit the ball hard all day. In fact they gave us only two walks.”
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 20, SD JEWISH ACADEMY 5 — Foothills Christian erupted for 17 runs in the fifth inning of Thursday’s (Apr. 23) Ocean League blowout at Barona Diamond.
The Knights knocked out 20 hits in the lop-sided victory led by BAILEY LINK’s 4-for-4 effort. KONNER VON DER LEITH also had 3 hits, MARK PROFETA had three hits, and TREVOR SMALLWOOD had three.
“That’s gotta be some kind of record,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS, whose team improved to (13-3, 2-0).
But it isn’t, as it doesn’t even stand in the top 10. The leading mark is 24 runs in an inning.

Vasqez fires a three hitter

EL CAJON (4-23-15) — DANIEL VASQUEZ fired a three hit shutout as Granite Hills climbed back into the Grossmont Hills League race with a 4-0 victory over host Valhalla in Wednesday’s (Apr. 22) contest.
Vasquez walked two and struck out eight in a complete game effort.
Granite Hills took the early lead in the opening frame as JORDON VERDON doubled to center and scored on a single to right by DILLAN SHRUM.
The Eagles made it 2-0 in the fifth inning as SEAN ROSS doubled, CHASE GANDY laid down a bunt single and MICHAEL DIFFLEY walked. Jordon Verdon then hoisted a fly ball sacrifice fly to left field but that’s all Granite Hills would get in that inning.
In the 6th inning Granite Hills put together a 2-out rally. ANDREW BROWN singled to center and stole second. He scored on a base hit to left by Ross.
In the 7th Diffley doubled to right and scored on a two-out double by Shrum to make it 4-0.
All Valhalla could muster on the day was three singles – one by ANDY VAN ANTWERP, one by DOMENIC DONATO and one by C.J. BROWN.
HELIX 6, STEELE CANYON 1 — Steele Canyon suffered its fifth straight loss as CONNER KONISHI spun a 3-hitter to carry the Highlanders to the Grossmont Hills League victory on Wednesday (Apr. 22).
The Highlanders have won five of their last six.
Helix took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning and made that stand up for its latest victory.
The Highlanders made the most of 9 hits as no single player drove in more than one run. But the gang tackling by the Highlanders was enough to keep Helix in contention for the league lead.
“Konishi has been extremely effective for us all year,” Helix coach COLE HOLLAND said of his sophomore left-handed pitcher.
Holland did express some disappointment as he noted that the Highlanders left 13 runners on base.
Steele Canyon avoided the shutout when SERGIO ALCAREZ blasted his first home run in the second inning.

Von Der Leith shines in all facets of win
By Bill Dickens

LA JOLLA (4-22-15) — It wasn’t perfect but it was darn close as Foothills Christian clipped San Diego Jewish Academy 3-1 in Tuesday’s (Apr. 21) Ocean League encounter.
In the fourth inning junior KONNER VON DER LEITH reached base on an error, advanced on a groundout and stole third base. DANIEL LUCKETT flew out to center to score Von Der Leith. TIM GRAY walked and EZRA SIMS singled him home.
The Knights scored an insurance run in the 7th. Sims walked and JOSH LEWIS doubled. MARK PROFETA hit into a fielder’s choice that saw Sims cut down at the plate. On the play Profeta and Josh Lewis executed a double steal to add the bonus run.
Von Der Leith was outstanding on the hill for the Knights.
“This was Vondy’s game,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. “That’s what I call him. He gave up no hits, didn’t walk anybody and struck out 11. It was a good day.”
CHRISTIAN 10, SERRA 3 — Christian, ranked No. 7 in the county, put on its hitting shoes and teed off on Serra for a 7-2 lead after three innings in Tuesday’s (Apr. 21) Central League encounter to hold firmly onto its grip on the league lead.
TREVOR HOWELL led the offensive assault with two hits and three RBI, catcher WILL HAIL was 3-4 with two RBI in the Patriots’ victory.
ZACH HOGUEISSON was 2-2 with three runs scored and two RBI.
BRYCE JURRIES pitched five innings as Christian’s starting pitcher and allowed only two earned runs as he rolled his record to 6-0.
EASTLAKE 6, GROSSMONT 5 — The visiting Grossmont Foothillers let a potential non-league victory slide through their fingers Tuesday (Apr. 21) as they succumbed to the fifth ranked Eastlake Titans.
Grossmont (13-8), ranked No. 9, catapulted to a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Foothillers, who previously edged Eastlake 5-4 the first week in April, blew the lead in the final frame of the rematch.
The Hillers jumped in front on an RBI single by ADAM LOPEZ in the first inning. They broke the game open in the 3rd inning with a four-spot. Grossmont put together five singles, including a 2-run shot by BRAEDEN BARR. Lopez and CALVIN FARRIS also chipped in with run-scoring base hits, and it appeared the game was all but over.
But no, as Eastlake scored in four consecutive innings to steal the victory.
The Titans snapped a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh off a combination of shoddy defense to tag MICHAEL BYERLINE (2-4) with his fourth loss in six decisions.

Salinas and Alesi show off muscle in victory

LAKESIDE (4-21-15) — High scoring games are very rare in East County baseball these days. Case in point was Santana’s 10-6 Grossmont Valley League victory over host El Capitan on Monday (Apr. 20) that went for extra innings.
The Sultans pulled off the win with four runs in the eighth inning.
TRISTEN SALINAS slugged two home runs and two doubles as the Sultans took command of the Grossmont Valley League.
JERRY ALESI also slapped a solo home run for Santana.
In the decisive eighth inning the Sultans banged out five consecutive hits to pull out the extra inning victory.
CHRISTIAN MENDEZ doubled in a run and MITCHELL MILLER doubled in two for Santana.
Perhaps the greatest key to the victory was the relief pitching of COLTON CALVERT, who pitched four shutout innings to pick up the victory.
GRANITE HILLS 5, VALHALLA 1 – Junior ANDREW BROWN pitched a 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Granite Hills bowled over Valhalla Monday (Apr. 20) in Grossmont Hills League action.
JORDAN VERDON had two hits including a double, while DILLAN SHRUM was 2-3 with a run scored for Granite Hills.
Granite Hills took the lead on an RBI single by MICHAEL DIFFLEY in the second inning. The Eagles put the game away in the fifth inning on an RBI single by ANDY LOWRY and a 2-run double by Brown.
Valhalla’s lone tally came across on a double by LEWIS DIRKES and a sacrifice fly by JEFF HOUGHTBY in the first inning.
HELIX 8, STEELE CANYON 0 – Host Helix scored a first quarter touchdown and added the extra point in the second quarter as the Highlanders rolled past Steele Canyon Monday (Apr. 20) in Grossmont Hills League action.
JACK STRONACH carried the hammer for Helix with three hits and three RBI in three at-bats in the Highlanders’ big first inning. Included in his totals Stronach slugged a 2-run homer in the opening inning.
That was plenty of offense for senior pitcher LEE MUTTER who blanked the Cougars on 5 hits. ADRIAN SANCHEZ pitched a scoreless 7th inning to complete the shutout.
“Offensively it was great to see us put together a game like this,” noted Helix coach COLE HOLLAND.
MONTE VISTA 4, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 – In a battle that continues for the Grossmont Valley League title, host Monte Vista took a step forward by blanking rival Mount Miguel on Monday (Apr. 20).
This game belonged to sophomore ANDREW GONZALES, who was a double threat for the Monarchs. He pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout and also was 1-3 at the plate with a double.
The Monarchs took the lead in the second inning on an RBI double by DENNIS DAHLIN.
Monte Vista broke the game open in the fourth inning on an RBI single by SHAUN CAIN and added two more runs on a two-base error by the Matadors to stretch the Monarchs advantage to 4-0.
That’s all the offense Gonzales would need to post his 4th win in as many decisions.
WEST HILLS 21, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 – The Wolf Pack hitters again brought their bats to the game, pounding out 20 hits in Monday’s (Apr. 20) Grossmont Valley League contest en route to a 21-0 victory over the visiting El Cajon Valley Braves.
The Pack’s offensive outburst was led by senior shortstop KRIS AGUILAR’S 4-5 performance which included three runs, two doubles and five RBI.
Junior left-fielder JEREMIAH BARR came up with another big game going 4-4 with two runs scored, a booming double off the fence and when the dust settled, "JBarr" had four RBI for the day.
Other notable sluggers were senior NATE LEDFORD 1-3 with his second homerun in the third inning, two RBI, senior JOEY KRUG was 3-4 with two RBI. Senior centerfielder DONOVAN McCRYSTAL was 3 for 5 while driving in two runs.
The Pack got another strong pitching performance from junior left-hander GABRIEL SHUBERT (4-2) pitching a strong four innings and surrendering only two hits while striking out six. Next on the mound for the Pack, junior lefty CLAYTON LEWIS tossed two scoreless innings giving up a hit and striking out four. Junior GRANT MICKELSEN came in to make his varsity pitching debut tossing a perfect inning striking out two.

The Foothillers, who have now won 12 of their last 14 starts, have hoisted their record to 13-7. The shutout Patrick Henry in the first game 7-0.
In the opening contest of the twinbill, JACKSON HULETT and MICHAEL BYERLINE combined for a seven hit shutout. Hulett earned the win to go 2-1, and Byerline logged his third save.
The second game was not as successful as the Patriots pasted the Foothillers 9-3.
In the opening round EVAN McCARTHY was 3-4 with three runs scored, and BRAEDEN BARR was 3-4 with four RBI.
In the nightcap Grossmont’s defense crumbled. Byerline was 2-4 with two runs scored for the Foothillers, who could not overcome five errors.
TIGER GUERRERO and McCarthy each had a pair of hits in the losing cause.
The Patriots’ Darren Henry hit a grand slam homer in the third inning to put the game on ice.

SPRING VALLEY (4-18-15) — Under the bright lights of Petco Park, Grossmont High sparkled against Steele Canyon in a Grossmont Hills League encounter on Friday (Apr. 17).
The Foothillers punched in three runs in the opening frame on back-to-back singles by TIGER GUERRERO and EVAN McCARTHY, then MICHAEL BYERLINE doubled in two in a 7-2 victory over Steele Canyon.
Grossmont broke the game open with five runs in the third inning to turn the game into a 5-0 blowout. The Foothillers tagged on two more runs as ADAM LOPEZ singled and scored in the third frame.
The Cougars avoided the shutout as JOSH ESQUIBEL singled and scored on a double by SERGIO ALCAREZ.
VALHALLA 4, HELIX 3 (10 inn.) – Visiting Valhalla took on the Helix Highlanders on Friday (Apr. 17) in a Grossmont Hills League game that stretched 10 innings before the sun went down.
Helix took the early lead, scoring once in each of the first three innings before Valhalla hit the scoreboard with a run of their own as JEFF HOUGHTBY came in on a wild pitch.
LEE MUTTER scored CONNER KONISHI in the 1st, MATTHEW RICHARDSON brought in KEATON CHASE on an RBI single in the 2nd inning, and DaSHAWN KEIRSEY hit a sacrifice fly to score JACK STRONACH in the third. That would be all the scoring the Highlanders could muster the rest of the way.
DOMENIC DONATO singled to left to score Houghtby in the sixth to tie the score at 3-3, which held up all the way to the 10th inning when COLE HENDERSON walked and was brought home on BROCK MOSIER’s fielder’s choice.
Houghtby and Mutter each blasted doubles and ANDY VAN ANTWERP had a stolen base.
SANTANA 12, EL CAPITAN 4 – The Sultans rode roughshod over the visiting El Capitan Vaqueros on Friday (Apr. 17) in a Grossmont Valley League game.
The Vaqueros could not seem to find their groove as Santana jumped ahead 2-0 before El Capitan managed to rally with four runs in the third.
That seemed to spark Santana, which then added eight runs in the next two innings and added a final two more in the fifth.
NOAH NUNEZ led the Sultans with a 2-4 effort which produced three runs and two RBI, while JACOB ODENKIRK was 1-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
VICTOR CARLINO and SEAN DUNNE had doubles for El Capitan, while MITCHELL MILLER smacked a double for Santana.
MOUNT MIGUEL 16, MONTE VISTA 3 – Mount Miguel steamrollered Monte Vista, beginning with a 5-0 first inning burst in Friday’s (Apr. 17) Grossmont Valley League encounter.
ENRIQUE KELLER was 4-5 with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the stampede.
ERIC DE LA ROSA was 2-5 with two runs scored and four RBI, including his second home run in the third inning with a man aboard.
JAKE CASTILLO went 2-2 and scored three runs for Mount Miguel, while ALEX ESTRADA slammed a triple as he went 1-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.
Monte Vista struggled in the lop-sided loss.
WEST HILLS 24, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 – The West Hills Wolf Pack banged out 23 hits on their way to scoring a 24-2 Grossmont Valley League win against the El Cajon Valley Braves on Friday (Apr. 17).
"What's important at the end of the day-- the dub-u in the books"... Cougar (aka Wolf Pack coach MIKE HARWELL).
It was junior left fielder JEREMIAH BARR leading the Wolf Pack. "JBarr" produced, having a 3-4 day with two walks, three runs, a double and six RBI. Senior DH BRYCE GIBSON also stepped up big going 3-6 with two runs, three doubles and five RBI. Catcher ERIK MITCHELL, first baseman NATE LEDFORD, shortstop KRIS AGUILAR and big JOE KRUG all blasted a double that helped secure the win.
Strong starting pitching from senior right hander STEVEN TILLEY paced the team to a solid team win. Tilley pitched five scoreless innings allowing only three hits while striking out nine Braves hitters. The Pack then turned to RHP SPENCER MOYER. The big right-hander closed the door in the bottom of the inning. Coming into wrap up the game, AARON BARKLEY shut the door with little resistance.

Hail Hail Christian win

EL CAJON (4-17-15) — Top 10 power Christian High chopped down Clairemont 6-1 in Thursdays (Apr. 16) Central League encounter.
Patriots starter KYLE STOWERS pitched four hitless innings to help Christian take a 5-0 lead. He struck out 5.
Clairemont scored twice in the 5th inning off reliever NATE JARVIS, but that was the only flare of offense the Chieftains showed all afternoon.
Senior catcher WILL HAIL paced Christian’s 12-hit attack with a double, 2 singles and 3 RBI.
The sturdy 5-foot-11, 205-pound Hail has been a stalwart of the Christian defense as well as offense. During his first two seasons, as a freshman and a sophomore, he held his own as the Patriots centerfielder. He shifted to catcher as a junior and continues to be Christian’s No. 1 receiver for the 15-2 Patriots this season.
If he weren’t needed so badly as a catcher, he would pitch more than he has so far this season. He has allowed only 2 hits in 12 innings. Of course, in league play Hail is 7-for-8 (.785). Overall he’s batting .430 in the No. 3 hole for the Patriots.
It’s hard to measure Hail’s value as he’s a defensive dynamo.
“I call all my own pitches, and that makes the game even more fun,” he said. “There are a lot of things that I might want to do, like being a DH or pitch more often, but I have to admit I like where I am.”
GRANITE HILLS 4, SCRIPPS RANCH 3 – Known for its heavy hitting, Granite Hills has struggled most of this season. It took the Eagles nine innings to ground the Scripps Ranch Falcons 4-3 in a non-league game on Thursday (Apr. 16) in El Cajon.
SEAN ROSS slashed a game-winning single with one out in the bottom of the 9th to score ANDREW BROWN, who had reached base on a double.
“We’ve had trouble coming up with the key hit all year, so it feels good to get back on our home field and win a close one,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS.
The Eagles tied the game 1-1 with a solo home run by ANDY LOWRY (his second) in the 2nd inning.
Granite Hills was obliged again to play catch-up in the 4th. JORDAN VERDON doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lowry
The Eagles were one frame from being knocked out by the Falcons in the bottom of the 7th. DILLAN SHRUM singled and CHASE GANDY ran for him. Lowry followed with an RBI double to send the game into extra innings.
That set the stage for Ross’ knockout blow.
Eagles pitchers KENNY LAPIERRE and Brown allowed only 2 earned runs in nine frames with Brown picking up the win.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 12, MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 7 – The Foothills Christian Knights scored in 6 out of 7 innings while pounding out 17 hits Thursday (Apr. 16) in a non-league victory over host Mountain Empire.
DANIEL LUCKETT was 3-for-4 with 4 run scored, a home run and 3 RBI to pace the Knights (13-4).
BAILEY LINK was 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while RYAN QUINN was 3-for-5 with 2 runs, an RBI and 3 stolen bases.
EZRA SIMS had 3 stolen bases while TIM GRAY swiped 2.

SPRING VALLEY (4-16-15) — The Santana Sultans traveled to host Mount Miguel Wednesday (Apr. 15) for a Grossmont Valley League contest and treated the Matadors to a 12-2 blowout.
The first inning saw the two teams tied at one apiece, but Santana edged in front in the second with three runs to lead 4-1 until the fourth inning, when the Sultans added another marker to their ledger.
The big inning, however, was the fifth when Santana scored five runs and the game was well in the Sultans’ hands. They would score two more in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.
Mount Miguel scored one run in the fifth, but that would be all the Matadors could muster. ALEX ESTRADA and CONNER WHITE each had a double, with Estrada scoring the only run for the Matadors.
JACOB ODENKIRK led Santana, going 3-for-4 with five runs scored and three RBI. He slammed his first home run in the second inning with three men aboard.
NOAH NUNEZ was 4-for-5 with four RBI, while REECE HERNANDEZ finished 2-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a pair of doubles. MITCHELL MILLER was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a double for Santana.
TRISTEN SALINAS picked up the win for the Sultans, going six innings, allowing three hits and two runs – one earned – two walks and two strikeouts. BRANDON MOSBURG finished up with one inning, allowing one hit and issuing a walk.
ERIC DE LA ROSA was the hardluck loser for Mount Miguel.
WEST HILLS 8, MONTE VISTA 4 – West Hills came out swinging the bats en route to an 8-4 victory over host Monte Vista Wednesday (Apr. 15) in a Grossmont Valley League contest.
Wolf Pack senior centerfielder ALEC SCALCO had a day, going 3-for-4 with a game leadoff triple and scoring two runs while stealing two bases. Senior designated hitter NATE LEDFORD also brought his bat to the game, going 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI.
Junior Catcher AARON BARKLEY also chipped in with a solid batting performance going 2-for-3 with a double, a sac fly and two runs scored. NATHAN LEDFORD chipped in with a double.
In total the Wolf Pack banged out 14 hits in a total team effort attack.
Junior left hander GABRIEL SHUBERT tossed five solid innings, picking up the win and scattering five hits while only surrendering four runs, two of which were earned.
Senior DONOVAN McCRYSTAL came in to shut the door and picked up the save, pitching the final two innings and surrendering only onr base hit on his way to striking out five.
Monarchs catcher JJ McDANIEL went 2-for-3, scored two runs, had an RBI and stole a base. DIEGO SANDOVAL was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
“Credit Monte Vista for being so persistent in the game,” said Wolf Pack coach MIKE “Cougar” HARWELL.
HELIX 14, VALHALLA 2 – The Helix Highlanders made it look easy as they pounded out six runs in the first inning and turned the game into a blowout with five runs in the fifth in a Grossmont Hills League lop-sided victory over Valhalla on Wednesday (Apr. 15).
CONNER KONISHI picked up the win by pitching five innings and allowing only two earned runs. He struck out three. Reliever LEE MUTTER pitched two inning and surrendered one run.
In the big inning MATTHEW RICHARDSON and Konishi singled and JACK STRONACH was safe on catcher’s interference. Mutter followed with a line drive single to left field, scoring Richardson and Konishi. DaSHAWN KEIRSEY was hit by a pitch. HUNTER ISBELL walked and KEATON CHASE singled to center, scoring Mutter, while DAVID JOSEPHSON was put out on a 4-6-3 double play. Keirsey scored on that play. STEVEN ALBA followed with a single to right to score Isbell.
Valhalla got on the board when JOSH HEIDER blasted a solo home run to left field to lead off the third.
Helix had another big inning in the fifth with Isbell slashing a single, Chase and Josephson walked to load the bases. Alba walked in Isbell and Richardson was cut down on a 6-3 double play which also caught Alba at second. Chase made the most of it by scoring on the play. Josephson scored as Konishi reached on an error by the shortstop, who allowed JACK STRONACH to also reach on the following at-bat. Mutter singled to center to plate Konishi and Stronach.
Valhalla fought back in the sixth, but got off to a slow start with a pop-up to second and a fly out to center. JEFF HOUGHTBY laced a double to left and DOMENIC DONATO crushed an RBI double to left to score Houghtby. But that was all the scoring the Norsemen could muster.
GROSSMONT 7, STEELE CANYON 1 – Statistics often don’t tell the tale, and they didn’t in Wednesday’s (Apr. 15) Grossmont Hills League encounter between the Foothillers and the Cougars.
On the side of the Foothillers it was a grueling attack. For the Cougars it was a taxing event.
Grossmont broke up a 2-1 advantage with 5 tallies in the 6th, riding the long ball to do so. In fact the Foothillers hit three home runs in that frame. TIGER GUERRERO hit a 3-run shot, and CALVIN FARRIS and MICHAEL BYERLINE each hit a solo shot as Grossmont burst to a 7-1 lead.
BRAEDEN BARR and Byerline combined to limit Steele Canyon to one earned run in the Grossmont Hills victory.
The Cougars outhit the Foothillers 10-6.
AVERY TUCK slashed three hits and JOSH ESQUIBEL had a base hit and an RBI in the losing cause.
EL CAPITAN 27, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 (6 inn.) – The Grossmont Valley League favorites from El Capitan buried host El Cajon Valley in Wednesday’s (Apr. 15) second round of league play.
It was a hitting parade for the Vaqueros who hammered out 22 hits in the lop-sided victory. Nine Vaqueros contributed to the onslaught.
JORDAN FRANTZ and MYLES EMMERSON drove in five runs apiece in the rout that included a 13-run second inning.
The game had overtones of being even more lop-sided than it was, but coach STEVE VICKERY put on the brakes.
DYLAN WANNAMAKER drove in three runs and scored three for the Vaqueros (12-4, 2-0).
DAWSON McCLANAHAN was 2-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBI.
Three El Capitan pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and shared in the victory.
It was a long day for El Cajon Valley, which trailed 16-0 after two innings.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 7, HIGH TECH–CHULA VISTA 5 – Foothills Christian snapped a 5-5 tie with two runs in the sixth inning to knock off High Tech-Chula Vista in a non-league encounter on Wednesday (Apr. 15) at Sweetwater’s Senior Little League Field.
The majority of the scoring came in the first two innings and the game was tied 5-5 after two innings.
BAILEY LINK doubled in the first inning, followed by another double by KONNER VON DER LEITH, which scored Link. DANIEL LUCKETT slashed a double to score Von Der Leith, and TIM GRAY singled to score Luckett.
In the second inning after two outs, Link was hit by pitch and Von Der Leith singled to short. The ball got away from the fielder and Link scored on the error. On the attempted pickoff at second base, the ball slid past the centerfielder and Von Der Leith scored on the error.
EZRA SIMS singled to lead off the 6th. One out later MARK PROFETA doubled Sims home and Link doubled to score Profeta.

Sultans narrowly avoid the horns
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (4-14-15) — DAULTON BARRY turned in a powerful pitching performance Monday (Apr. 13) in the Grossmont Valley League opener which led to a 3-2 victory for the Santana Sultans over the visiting Mount Miguel Matadors.
Barry is a double threat as a pitcher and an infielder for the Sultans, but pitching was the name of the game for this contest for the junior right-hander. He spun a complete game against the Matadors, allowing 5 hits and no earned runs.
Santana did all of its scoring in the 2nd inning to take an early lead. JERRY ALESI slugged an RBI double to stake the Sultans to a 1-0 lead. MITCHELL MILLER and JACOB ODENKIRK each drove in a run in that inning.
The Matadors fought back thanks to two Santana errors and an RBI single by CHRISTIAN GARCIA.
ENRIQUE KELLER was the hardluck loser for the Matadors as he allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs in a complete game effort.
CHRISTIAN 13, CORONADO 7 – Tabbed the pre-season favorites of the Central League, the Christian High Patriots are on their way to living up to that prognostication.
They took a positive first step out of the dugout in the league opener by out-slugging host Coronado on Monday (Apr. 13) on the peninsula.
Catcher WILL HAIL anchored the Patriots’ offense with four hits, three runs and three RBI in five at-bats.
JOHN GERSHOW took his share of healthy cuts as he went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
KYLE STOWERS joined the hit parade as he went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
EL CAPITAN 25, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 – The Vaqueros hammered out 23 hits in a lop-sided opening Grossmont Valley League victory on Monday (Apr. 13) in Lakeside.
SEAN DUNNE led the offensive charge with four hits and four RBI in six at-bats for El Capitan (10-4). Dunne supplied the muscles with 3 doubles included in his totals.
Fourteen Vaqueros contributed to the offensive onslaught.
Catcher JASON MOORMAN was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.
CLAY CROMWELL pounded out three hits and three RBI for the Vaqueros.
Three El Capitan pitchers combined to spin a 2-hit shutout. CHANCE COLSON allowed one hit and struck out six, while JORDAN FRANTZ allowed one hit and struck out five. ROBBY CALLAWAY closed out the rout, allowing no hits and one strikeout.
El Cajon Valley’s offense consisted of singles by HECTOR CARREON and JESUS FAVELA.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 19, ESCONDIDO CHARTER 5 – A 15-run third inning propelled Foothills Christian past Escondido Charter at Barona Diamond in a non-league contest on Monday (Apr. 13).
MARK PROFETA drove in five runs with three hits, and RYAN QUINN cashed in three more with three hits as the Knights (11-4) cruised to a lop-sided victory.
Profeta and BAILEY LINK shared the pitching chores, allowing five hits and five earned runs while striking out nine in the victory.
MONTE VISTA 7, WEST HILLS 0 {forfeit} – The West Hills Wolf Pack was penalized for having too many game points and thus were dealt a forfeit loss to Monte Vista this season. The forfeit was assessed in the Grossmont Valley League opener Monday (Apr. 13).

BILL DICKENS’ PREDICTIONS
Here are Bill Dickens' predictions for the 2015 High Baseball season
Grossmont Hills League
1. Granite Hills (6-6) – The Eagles certainly have the pitching with DANIEL VASQUEZ, KENNY LAPIERRE and MICHAEL CARTWRIGHT, but the hitters haven’t produced. If the Granite Hills hitters find the plate, the Eagles will make a title run.
2. Grossmont (10-6) – Grossmont has won eight of its last nine starts and is certainly a challenger for the league laurels. One thing the Foothillers have going for them is a balanced pitching attack with CALVIN FARRIS, MICHAEL BYERLINE, JAYDEN LOMBARDO and BRAEDEN BARR, which may give them enough muscle to overthrow the Eagles. Grossmont’s offensive effort is anchored by ADAM LOPEZ.
3. Helix (9-5) – The Highlanders are just beginning to catch stride and are capable of capturing the Grossmont Hills crown. The Hillers have quality pitching guided by CONNER KONISHI and LEE MUTTER. Double threat DaSHAWN KEIRSEY can hit and pitch and will be a key to the Highlanders’ playoff success.
4. Valhalla (7-7-1) – Versatile COLE HENDERSON is a prime ingredient to the Norsemen’s success, but Valhalla will have to scramble to overtake its premium contenders.
5. Steele Canyon (5-8) – The Cougars have been tabbed to finish out of contention but have enough talent to surprise their league competition. TREVOR ROW and AVERY TUCK are key pitchers who may turn things around for Steele Canyon.
Grossmont Valley League
1. El Capitan (10-4) – El Capitan has streaked to a 10-4 record and stands as the favorite of the Grossmont Valley League. The Vaqueros junior catcher MYLES EMMERSON will guide the fortunes of El Capitan, a team that is clearly the one to beat for the title. This is a young Vaqueros team that includes 15 juniors. The pitching staff is untested but should come around with TRISTAN DUNCAN and CHANCE COLSON along with SEAN DUNNE.
2. Santana (3-8-1) – Versatile pitcher-outfielder TRISTEN SALINAS and steady JACOB ODENKIRK are the key ingredients to the Sultans future. DAULTON BARRY is a double threat as a pitcher and an infielder for the Sultans. This one could go either way.
3. West Hills (5-7) – Versatile pitcher-infielder JOEY KRUG is the anchor of the Wolf Pack and DONOVAN McCRYSTAL is the key pitcher-outfielder. Infielder COLE PENDLETON should also contribute with his glove.
4. Mount Miguel (6-7) – Versatile JAKE CASTILLO will be the guideline of Mount Miguel as the Matadors are looking for a fourth place finish.
5. Monte Vista (6-7) – ANDREW GONZALES and AUSTIN CAOLE are cornerstones for the Monarchs, who figure to be a longshot at best.
6. El Cajon Valley (2-7) – El Cajon Valley, who has struggled for years, seem to be coming to life. But the Braves are overmatched in the Grossmont Valley League. Braves alum and first year coach CLIFTON THOMAS is providing solid guidance.
Central League
1. Christian (13-2)
2. Coronado (4-9)
3. Serra (5-8)
4. Clairemont (6-8)
5. Lincoln (7-7)
El Capitan brings home the Dickens with late dramatics
By Mark Meadows
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-12-15) — A long tradition of memorable battles between the El Capitan Vaqueros and the Grossmont Foothillers added a new twist in the final of the Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament on Saturday (Apr. 11) at Joe Gizoni Field. El Cap (10-4) took home the crown with an improbable finish and an 8-7 victory over Grossmont (10-6).
Five-foot, 10-inch sophomore JAYDEN LOMBARDO went six strong innings for the Foothillers allowing three runs, none earned, and Grossmont was in complete control on the way to adding this championship to their recent Lions Tournament Premier Division championship.
The Vaqueros had other ideas.
Down 7-1 entering the 6th inning, an error and a walk led to a single by VICTOR CARLINO that rattled the first base bag and plated 2 runs. The score was now 7-3 Grossmont.
After a scoreless 6th for the Foothillers, the fireworks began.
DALTON JENNINGS led with a base on balls. SAM MELERO followed with an infield single to third. DAWSON Mc CLANAHAN worked a walk and MYLES EMERSON rocketed a 2 run scoring double to left center. Grossmont's lead was cut to 7-5.
JASON MOORMAN decided to jump on the bandwagon and delivered a run scoring single for El Capitan to cut the lead to 7-6. The air was becoming very thin in Gozoni Field.
VICTOR CARLINO (2-4, 3 RBI) would make it hard to breathe. With a dump single into left, Carlino tied this championship at seven apiece. MARSHALL CHAMPLIN would do him one better. A hustle play on a grounder to short, with the game on the line, Champlin beat out a return throw on a double play, scoring Moorman to put the Vaqueros up 8-7.
"I was just looking for a good pitch to hit," he said. "I think the key was to not over think it."
SEAN DUNNE pitched the final two innings to earn the win in relief.
"We've preached all year about not giving up and playing all 21 outs," El Cap head coach CLAYTON CURO stated. "If you believe it you can get it."
"Hey, they earned this win", said Grossmont head coach JORDAN ABRUZZO. "They had the clutch hits at the right time and sometimes you just tip your cap."
CHRISTIAN 9, FRANCIS PARKER 2 — Few teams have more impressive records than the Christian High Patriots who have rolled to 13 wins in 15 starts.
Christian’s latest conquest came against long time nemesis Parker in Saturday’s (Apr. 11) City Conference Tournament Championship game at Madison, raising the Patriots record to 13-2.
The Patriots rode the one-hit pitching of WILL HAIL, who did not allow an earned run during a six-inning stint. Hail did more than just pitch as he was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
JOHN GERSHOW pitched one inning, gave up one hit and one run and one walk as he slammed the door on the Lancers (10-6).
It was the third tournament in as many tries won by Christian. The Patriots won the Aztec-Foothiller Tournament title, the Orlando, Fla. Invitational and the City Conference crown.
TREVOR HOWELL was 3-for-4 in the Patriots’ 13-hit attack. CHASE WEHSENER was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI. BRYCE JURRIES was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI. CHRISTIAN MEZA was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
G1: FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 9, TRI-CITY CHRISTIAN 1
G2: FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 7, TRI-CITY CHRISTIAN 6 — Foothills Christian executed a non-league sweep of Tri-City Christian on Saturday (Apr. 11) at MiraCosta College.
In the opener Foothills Christian hammered out 14 hits with RYAN QUINN supplying his first game-winning RBI.
BAILEY LEWIS allowed only one run in the first five innings as he picked up the win in Game One for the Knights. TREVOR SMALLWOOD pitched the final two innings as the Knights completed a 3-hit victory.
In the nightcap Foothills Christian’s offense stalled until the final frame when the Knights scored 7 runs to erase a 6-0 deficit.
EZRA SIMS supplied the walkoff base hit for the Knights in Game Two to complete the sweep.

Lowry's homer not enough in Orange County

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (4-10-15) — Granite Hills, which has been traveling from home base to Orange County on a daily basis, including Thursday (Apr. 9) when the Eagles dropped a 5-4 decision to the Chatsworth Chancellors in the prestigious Boras Classic.
The 32-team invitational pits 16 of baseball’s best high school teams from Southern California against 16 of the best baseball programs from Northern California, to ultimately name a de-facto state champion.
Said Scott Boras, Director of The Boras Foundation, which sponsors the event, “We want to provide outstanding high school teams a chance to participate in an elite competition, while at the same time giving them a world-class venue to showcase their talent in front of collegiate-level coaches and professional scouts.”
This is the second time Granite Hills has participated in this tournament and has won only two games against the blue chip talent.
In Thursday’s encounter against Chatsworth the Eagles came from behind from a 5-1 deficit. JORDAN VERDON slashed a 2-run double and ANDY LOWRY hammered a home run in the 6th inning with a man aboard.
But the Eagles (6-6) catch-up offense was unable to do so against Chatsworth (12-9).

Jurries streak comes to an end, Patriots win
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-9-15) — Christian’s BRYCE JURRIES saw his shutout string snapped at three but still came out a winner over Mission Bay (12-4) in Wednesday’s (Apr. 8) City Conference Tournament semifinal.
More than that though Jurries’ five inning stint, coupled with relief work by CAMDEN BESSONE and KYLE STOWERS, helped the Patriots produce an 8-3 victory. The win put them into the tournament finals on Saturday (Apr. 11) against Francis Parker at Madison High at 10:30 a.m.
In a previous meeting Christian (12-2) lost to Parker 5-4 in nine innings. This bout against Mission Bay wasn’t as challenging. The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a base hit by WILL HAIL.
An inning later Christian punched across two on a run-scoring double by JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD and a triple by TREVOR HOWELL to make it 3-0.
KYLE STOWERS sparked the break out third inning with his 4th solo home run of the season. CHRISTIAN MEZA capped the hefty frame with a 2-run double, staking the Patriots to a 7-1 lead.
That was more than enough for Jurries who allowed only two earned runs in five innings to collect his fifth win without a loss.
HELIX 12, MONTE VISTA 0 — Helix’s DaSHAWN KEIRSEY was the star of the show in Wednesday’s (Apr. 8) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament to keep the Highlanders’ playoff hopes alive going into Friday’s final round.
Keirsey allowed only one hit in 5 2/3 innings, surrendering a no-hit bid when the Monarch’s AUSTIN CAOLE singled up the middle with one out in the 6th inning to break up the no-no. It was a clean single, a no-doubter.
As soon as the base hit touched the ground, Helix coach COLE HOLLAND made a change, bringing in DOMINIC TSUTSUI.
Helix needs a win over Mount Miguel on Friday to have a chance of qualifying for the tournament championship.
“Nobody in our dugout mentioned that I was throwing a no-hitter, even though in the back of my mind I kinda thought I was,” Keirsey said. “I felt the most comfortable as I have at any point all year. All I did was pound the strike zone.”
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Keirsey, who walked one and struck out eight, will attend the University of Utah on a baseball scholarship upon graduation.
Keirsey also swung the bat with authority. He scored the first run of the game with a bunt single and a stolen base and eventually scored on an error. In the 3rd inning he slashed a triple to drive in a run.
“I love pitching and hitting but I realize I’m going to be a position player in the future,” Keirsey said.
“I thought Keirsey had the best command he’s had since he’s been here,” coach COLE HOLLAND said of the Highlanders’ 3-year starter.
The Highlanders pounded out 13 hits, including three by LEE MUTTER and CONNER KONISHI who also had three RBI.
EL CAPITAN 9, STEELE CANYON 1 — El Capitan locked up a Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament spot in the championship game Saturday (Apr. 11) at El Capitan behind the complete game pitching of TRISTAN DUNCAN who allowed only one run on five hits and struck out 11.
Looking ahead the battle will likely be between Grossmont and Helix as teams who are bidding for a chance to play the Vaqueros for the championship. Due to Wednesday’s (Apr. 8) loss to El Capitan, Steele Canyon has been all but eliminated from tournament contention.
The Vaqueros rattled off 13 hits, including three by DALTON JENNINGS. El Capitan scored in five of the seven innings to bury Steele Canyon.
GROSSMONT 2, SANTANA 0 — BRAEDEN BARR and MICHAEL BYERLINE combined on a 7-hit shutout to give Grossmont its eighth straight win in Wednesday’s (Apr. 8) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament action.
Barr picked up his 3rd win in four decisions and Byerline logged his second save. More than that though Barr broke the scoreless tie with an infield groundout and JAYDEN LOMBARDO singled in a run to account for all the scoring in the fourth inning.
The hardluck loser for Santana was DAULTON BARRY, who pitched a complete game 5-hitter and did not allow an earned run.
VALHALLA 7, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 — Four Valhalla pitchers combined on a 6-hit shutout, led by starter CASEY O’SULLIVAN in Wednesday’s (Apr. 8) Bill Dickens Grossmont Conference Tournament contest.
Valhalla made it look easy in dusting off Mount Miguel. LEWIS DIRKES led off the game with a triple for the Norsemen. ANDY VAN ANTWERP singled to center to make it 1-0.
Valhalla took command in the 3rd inning as Dirkes doubled to left and DOMENIC DONATO singled to right to score him. COLE HENDERSON then whacked his second home run of the season with Donato aboard.
GRANITE HILLS 6, DAMIEN 1 — ANDREW BROWN pitched a complete 3-hitter as Granite Hills toppled La Verne Damien in the second round of the Boras Classic on Wednesday (Apr. 8).
Granite Hills jumped in front 3-0 after two innings. The Eagles (6-5) finally produced some offense with nine hits after sputtering miserably for the past week.
The Eagles took a 5-1 lead after four innings and Brown made the early advantage stand up.
Granite Hills will face Chatsworth Thursday (Apr. 9) at noon in the third round of the tournament at Junipero Serra High.

Winning streak snapped for Christian
Same tired story against Parker
By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
SAN DIEGO (4-8-15) — Mark Allen slashed a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday (Apr. 7) with two outs when the winning run was scored, staking Francis Parker to a 5-4 City Conference Tournament victory over the Christian Patriots.
The No. 6 ranked Patriots were only three outs away from posting their 11th straight victory. That’s when Jonas Davis, who has a scholarship to Nevada, spoiled the party with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
“We were only three outs from winning the game,” said Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL. “But there’s something about when we play at Parker – whether it’s football, baseball or basketball - we always seem to come up short. We always beat them when we play them at home.”
In Tuesday’s latest meeting Christian blew a 3-1 lead for a variety of reasons. They hit into two double plays and had three runners picked off in addition to committing three errors.
On the up side, KYLE STOWERS slashed a double and a triple to keep Christian in the game.
NATHAN JARVIS surrendered only 4 hits and 3 earned runs in 6 2/3 innings, but the bullpen could not protect him as JOHN GERSHOW gave up a run and four hits in 1 2/3 innings that decided the game in the final frame.
Christian plays host Mission Bay on Wednesday (Apr. 8) at 3:30 in an effort to land a spot in the City Conference Tournament championship.
JUNIPERO SERRA 4, GRANITE HILLS 0 — Granite Hills suffered its 3rd shutout loss of the season in Tuesday’s (Apr. 7) opening round of the Boras Classic, falling to the Junipero Serra Lions.
Granite Hills mustered only three hits, including one each by ANDY LOWRY and SEAN ROSS, and a double by DILLAN SHRUM.
KENNY LAPIERRE pitched 5 2/3 innings, surrendering five hits, four earned runs, five walks and three strikeouts.
Granite Hills will continue play in the Boras Classic Wednesday through Friday (Apr. 8-10).

Vikings ground out a Eagles championship
By Mark Meadows

HOLTVILLE (4-7-15) — The Foothills Christian High Knights invaded the Imperial Valley on Monday (Apr. 6) with their sights set on the championship in the final of the Tri-City Eagles Classic. The Knights (7-4) arrived in the final on the strength of their 3-1 record in pool play, outscoring their opponents 49-12.
Standing in their way? The home standing Holtville Vikings (9-6), although the Vikings were declared the visiting team for the final. Holtville was also 3-1 in pool play with a similar 42-12 differential in scoring. One might expect a high scoring affair between teams averaging over 10 runs a game in this tournament; and they would be wrong.
Local knowledge was a factor in Holtville's 5-3 triumph over the Knights. With a steady wind blowing in from the West, the Knights couldn't keep the ball out of the air on offense. Eleven of their 21 outs were fly outs in a place where the ball just dies in the wind. Conversely, the Vikings had only three fly outs.
"Our approach at the plate today wasn't what we talked about beforehand," said Foothills Christian coach DAVE LEWIS. "We also made mistakes in the field that led to most of their runs."
Foothills Christian started the scoring in the bottom of the first. BAILEY LINK was on board with a lead single to left. Two hitters later RYAN QUINN followed with a single that was booted by the right fielder, allowing Link to score. Knights up 1-0. But winning baseball is about holding a team scoreless after your team scores.
That didn't happen. After a one out walk in the second inning, a muffed grounder put runners at first and second. A botched double play left a first and third situation. An inning that should have been scoreless was about to get ugly. After a stolen base and a run scoring single, Holtville cashed in with a 2-run single to left to lead 3-1. All three runs were unearned.
"Give them credit," said Lewis. "We gave them extra bases and outs, but they also had some clutch hitting."
In the fourth inning, three more errors led to two more unearned runs and the Vikings final tally of five.
The Knights didn't go down without a fight. In their half of the fourth, DANIEL LUCKETT had a single to left and eventually scored on a TIM GRAY single to left. In the 5th, back to back walks to MARK PROFETA and TRISTIN BARLING led to a KONNER VON DER LEITH pinch single to cut it to 5-3.
JOSH LEWIS pitched a complete game for the Knights, giving up seven hits, five runs - none earned – four walks and struck out seven.
Some controversy then ensued in the sixth. Leading off the inning was Luckett, and on a 1-1 count, his backswing caught a piece of the Holtville catcher. The CIF rule states that this is a 'dead ball' unless there were already two strikes. The Knights had the count at 1-1, the official scorekeeper had the count at 1-2. The umpire seemed to not know the rule either way. He declared the batter out. Coach Lewis has lodged an official protest of the game.
"We seemed to be getting some momentum going in the previous innings," he stated. "That's our number four hitter and one of our captains. I'm not pulling my protest."
It's the better part of 2 1/2 hours to Holtville from El Cajon. After missed chances and miscues, the return trip probably seemed like six hours.
This battle of San Diego Section CIF Division IV teams might not be over, pending the protest. And it could be even more interesting as they could meet down the road in the playoffs.
Patriots take care of business in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (4-5-15) — The Christian High Patriots continued to bully a light-headed field on Saturday (Apr. 4) by blanking the City of Life Christian Academy out of Kissimmee, Fla. behind the 1-hit pitching of WILL HAIL in a 10-0 victory in a game that was halted after 4 1/2 innings.
It was the third straight win for the Patriots during their three game sweep of the Disney Tournament.
Hail struck out six and walked one in his shutout victory. On top of that he was 1 for 2 with three RBI for the Patriots (11-1) and stole three bases.
Christian’s offense ran wild all afternoon. KYLE STOWERS swiped three sacks, as did TREVOR HOWELL. The Patriots totaled 10 steals in their abbreviated contest.
CHRISTIAN MEZA was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, two RBI, a double and a stolen base.

Patriots sweep first two games in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (4-4-15) — The fact that Christian swept a double header Friday (Apr. 3) in the opening rounds of the Disney Tournament in Orlando, Fla. would be sparkling enough.
Given that pitcher BRYCE JURRIES completed his third straight shutout was even more impressive as the Patriots upended the IMG Academy Ascenders out of Bradenton, Fla. in Game One, 6-0.
The Patriots followed that up with a 5-1 victory over the Mynderse Blue Devils of Seneca Falls, NY to raise their season record to 10-1.
Jurries scattered eight hits, struck out seven and walked two as he raised his record to 4-0.
Christian took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning of the opening game on a triple by ZACH HOGUEISSON and a ground out by KYLE STOWERS.
In the second inning JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD singled and scored on a double by TREVOR HOWELL.
In the third inning the Patriots continued to pour on the offense. Stowers had a single and scored on a wild pitch to help the Patriots take a 4-0 lead.
In the fourth inning Ledgerwood singled, Hogueisson doubled and both runners scored on a double by WILL HAIL.
Christian made it a quick kill in the 1st inning against the Blue Devils of New York, stealing 10 bases to boot.
They scored five runs in the first inning. After two walks, Hail singled in a run to make it 1-0. Stowers followed with a 2-run double. CHASE WEHSENER singled then executed a double steal with Stowers stealing home base. Ledgerwood ripped an RBI single to bring in Wehsener to cap the early uprising by the Patriots.
Three Christian pitchers combined for a 5-hitter with Wehsener logging six strikeouts in three innings.
Christian collected seven hits including two hits by Ledgerwood and Wehsener.
The Patriots will conclude their Florida tour against the City of Life Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Fla. on Saturday (Apr. 4) at 11 a.m.

Foothillers win the Premier Division behind Farris' hot bat

CHULA VISTA (4-3-15) — ADAM LOPEZ was 3-for-6 with 5 RBI to help guide the Grossmont Foothillers to the championship of the Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament by toppling Torrey Pines 4-3 in the finals, and Eastlake 5-4 in the semifinals.
But Lopez did more than swing the bat as he pitched two shutout innings for the win against Torrey Pines. He also had a 2-run double against the Falcons in the 5th inning.
Grossmont punched across what proved to be the winning run in the 6th inning on a double by TIGER GUERRERO and a single by Henderson. The victory was the 7th straight for Grossmont after a 1-5 start.
Grossmont’s CALVIN FARRIS was selected the Premier Division MVP.
The Foothillers made the most of 3 hits in the semifinal game against Eastlake with 5 runs in the 5th inning. That may look like a bundle, which it was, but the key hit was a bases loaded double and 3 RBI by ADAM LOPEZ.
VALHALLA 7, KENNEDY 6 (8 inn.) — The Norsemen played catch-up for three innings before walking off with Thursday’s (Apr. 2) Premier Division consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
COLE HENDERSON was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI along with a double and a home run to ignite the Norsemen offense. In the last two games Henderson has batted .778 (7-for-9).
ANDY VAN ANTWERP was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Valhalla, which pounded out a dozen hits against five Kennedy pitchers.
The Norsemen put the game away in the 8th inning as GARRETT YOCOM walked, LEWIS DIRKES also walked and JEFF HOUGHTBY singled in the winning run.
HELIX 16, RANCHO LAS VEGAS 6 — The Helix Highlanders scored a season high 16 runs in Thursday’s (Apr. 2) Classic Division consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
DaSHAWN KEIRSEY led the charge by going 2-for-5 with a pair of triples and 5 RBI.
JACK STRONACH was 4-for-5 with 4 runs scored and an RBI.
KEATON CHASE chipped in to the onslaught, going 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, a double and a triple.
That took all the pressure off the Helix staff, which struggled out of the gate.
The Highlanders (7-5) scored 13 runs in the first 3 innings and never looked back.
STEELE CANYON 4, NORTHVIEW 3 — The Cougars of Steele Canyon have won 5 of their last 7 starts, including Thursday’s (Apr. 2) consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
But it took them until the final frame to dry dock the Vikings of Covina. Northview scored twice in the 7th inning to snap a 1-1 tie, however, Steele Canyon counterpunched with 3 runs to collect the victory.
Pinch hitter JOEY GERARDI launched the rally with his first home run of the season. TREVOR ROW walked and JONATHAN KRATZ ran for him. MATTHEW BAGDASAR banged a double to tie the game, SERGIO ALCAREZ eventually walked with the bases loaded to force in the game winning run.
ESCONDIDO 4, MOUNT MIGUEL 3 — In the 1st inning of Thursday’s (Apr. 2) Division 3A semifinal of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament, the Matadors got sacrifice flies from CONNER WHITE and ENRIQUE KELLER, and an RBI double from ERIC DE LA ROSA.
“We did some good things – we have some stuff to build on,” said Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “We got to the last day of the Lions Tournament and we can build on that. We were right there – we just have to get more consistent on the basics and our execution.
“We scored all three runs in the top of the 1st inning and then watched it slip away.”
ALEX ESTRADA accounted for half of the Matadors’ 4 hits.
VISTA 3, WEST HILLS 1 — The Wolf Pack came up short Thursday (Apr. 2) in a consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament, losing a close game to Vista 3-1.
On the mound for West Hills, senior right-handed pitcher DONOVAN McRYSTAL pitched a solid 5 innings, only surrendering 2 runs, while giving up 3 hits and fanning 3 Vista hitters.
Picking up where McCrystal left off, left-handed pitcher JEREMIAH BARR pitched a solid inning in relief, giving up 1 unearned run and striking out 2. The Wolf Pack had a tough time at the plate and had only 3 hits but made it a game until the end.
"The Pack worked hard all week and coming up short is a tough pill to swallow,” said West Hills coach MIKE (Cougar) HARWELL. “We'll get on the diamond after the Easter break and tighten the lug nuts."
GRANITE HILLS 6, NEVADA CORONADO 1 — Known more for its hitting than any other phase of the game, Granite Hills has proven to be a blue chip pitching unit.
The Eagles (5-4) gave up one run on three hits in knocking off Nevada Coronado Thursday (Apr. 2) in a Classic Division consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
That lone tally came in the 1st inning, which is rare for the Eagles’ pitching staff, which owns a county-best 4 shutouts.
The Eagles snapped a 1-1 tie with 3 runs in the 5th inning. JACOB VERDON led a 9-hit attack by going 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
DANIEL VASQUEZ and MICHAEL DIFFLEY combined on a 3-hitter and did not allow an earned run. Vasquez struck out 7 in 6 1/3 innings.
WESTVIEW 11, MONTE VISTA 4 — Poor base running and powerless pitching added up to a Division 4A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament semifinal blowout on Thursday (Apr. 2).
“It’s pretty hard to win a ballgame when you have three baserunners picked off – one at each base, first, second and third,” said Monarchs coach MATT ATKINSON. “On top of that our four pitchers failed to strike out a single batter.”
The Monarchs (5-6) scored 2 runs in the 1st inning with only one hit – a double by AUSTIN CAOLE. DIEGO SANDOVAL and JJ McDANIEL had RBIs without benefit of a hit, giving the Monarchs the early lead.
In the 5th inning Westview committed three errors and ANDREW GONZALES had an RBI single. That rally might have continued but a Monte Vista runner was picked off as second base. After that the Monarchs’ offense stalled.
Four Monte Vista pitchers were touched up for 15 hits but did not strike out a single batter.
EL CAMINO REAL 7, EL CAPITAN 0 — The Vaqueros were listless in Thursday’s (Apr. 2) consolation game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament as they fell to the Conquistadors.
“You’d think that a team that had to get up at 6 in the morning, eat breakfast and then bus 25 miles to Lakeside, then play a 3-hour ballgame before jumping back on the bus and driving three hours home to Woodland Hills would be the tired team,” mused El Capitan assistant coach STEVE VICKERY. “But that was hardly the case. We looked like the team that was lacking sleep.”
The Vaqueros (7-5) mustered only 3 hits in the loss.
“We just couldn’t figure it out,” Vickery said. “Eighteen of our 21 outs were hit on the ground.”
El Capitan’s offense consisted of singles by JASON MOORMAN, MYLES EMMERSON and TRISTAN DUNCAN.

EL CAJON (4-2-15) — Granite Hills blanked Granada Hills Kennedy 6-0 in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Classic Division encounter of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The Eagles punched across 4 runs in the opening frame and added a 5th run in the 2nd.
JACOB VERDON was 3-for-4, MICHAEL DIFFLEY slammed a solo home run in the 1st inning and IZZY GOMEZ drove in 2 runs as the Eagles pulled a runaway win over the Kennedy Cougars.
CATHEDRAL 6, HELIX 4 — CONNER KONISHI was 3-for-4 with an RBI and HUNTER ISBELL was 3-for-3 to lead the Highlanders, but their pitchers gave up 11 hits. It was too much to turn back the Dons in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Classic Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
VALHALLA 16, NORTHVIEW 6 — JEFF HOUGHTBY was 3-for-6 with 5 RBI to carry the torch for Valhalla in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Premier Division game of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
COLE HENDERSON hammered 4 hits in five trips. Nine Norsemen contributed to an 18-hit attack.
Valhalla scored 8 runs in the 5th inning to break the game open.
EL CAPITAN 8, PALISADES 2 — Versatile MYLES EMMERSON went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI as the Vaqueros punched out Palisades in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The standout for El Capitan was Emmerson, who threw out the only person trying to steal a base. In the last two days he has attracted several scouts.
“He’s been playing his best baseball in front of a full house of scouts,” said Vaqueros assistant coach STEVE VICKERY.
After hoisting a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning, Emmerson slashed an RBI double in the 5th inning. He capped he free swinging affair with a base hit in the 7th.
TRISTAN DUNCAN was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI for El Capitan.
CHANCE COLSON pitched a complete game, surrendering only 5 hits, 2 runs while walking one and striking out 5.
MONTE VISTA 2, SAN DIEGUITO 1 — The Monarchs scored their only 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to steal a 2-1 victory over the Mustangs of San Dieguito in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Division 4A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
In the decisive 7th the Monarchs did not hit the ball out of the infield. But the winning tally came when SHAUN CAIN walked with the bases loaded.
CARLSBAD 4, WEST HILLS 3 — West Hills senior KRIS AGUILAR had a game to remember in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Not only did the Wolf Pack pitcher throw 5 good innings surrendering only 4 hits and 4 runs – 2 of which were earned while striking out 4 – he also was the key offensive player as well going 2-4 to keep his hot hitting going strong in the first half of the season.
The Pack trailed by 4 going into the 7th inning and was able to rally back scoring 3 but was not able to get the key hit when it mattered most and left the tying run at second base.
GROSSMONT 6, RANCHO LAS VEGAS 1 — BRAEDEN BARR pitched a 2-hitter to propel the Foothillers into the semifinals of the Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Barr needed only 85 pitches to finish the job.
Grossmont broke the game open with five runs in the 5th inning. JAYDEN LOMBARDO slammed a 2-run double to ignite a 5-run 5th inning for the Foothillers.
SANTANA 5, OCEANSIDE 0 — NOAH NUNEZ spun a 1-hit shutout and struck out 10 in a complete game victory for Santana in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Division 5A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament. Nunez pitched to 3 batters over the limit.
The sophomore right-hander missed a no-hitter as he surrendered a drag bunt single in the 5th inning. No doubt that was painful.
TRISTEN SALINAS counterpunched for Santana for the second time in two games with a 2-run shot in the 2nd inning. In addition to hitting his 2nd circuit clout in 24 hours, Salinas was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI against Oceanside.
NORTH HOLLYWOOD 3, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 — Mount Miguel advanced to the semifinals of Division 3A in the 65th Annual Lions Tournament despite suffered a bitter loss to North Hollywood in Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) final round of pool play.
ALEX ESTRADA slammed a 3-run solo homer in the 3rd inning to tie the game 1-1, and then the teams swapped runs until the final frame.
That’s when the Huskies of North Hollywood scored the winning tally. Mount Miguel had the bases loaded with one out and a Matador got picked off at third base, thus putting the Huskies in front.
Mount Miguel was unable to recover, but the news wasn’t all bad. The Matadors will participate in the Division 3A semifinals on Thursday (Apr. 2) against Escondido at Alliant University at 9 a.m. Should they win they will face the winners of the Valley Center-Fallbrook noon game at 3 p.m., also at Alliant, for the Division 3A championship.
STEELE CANYON 13, OTAY RANCH 4 — After going scoreless in the first two games of the Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament, Steele Canyon erupted for 7 runs in the 3rd inning Wednesday (Apr. 1) en route to a blowout of Otay Ranch.
In the explosive 7th AVERY TUCK tripled in one run, ISAII PLACENTIA followed with an RBI single. The onslaught continued as ZACH HART slashed a 2-run single, staking the Cougars to a 7-0 lead.
Placentia finished 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, while Hart was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, 2 runs scored and a stolen base. JOEY GIRARDI chipped in with an RBI double as a pinch hitter in the late innings.
It was as close to a perfect game as Steele Canyon has played all season. The Cougars, in fact, turned three double plays.
Steele Canyon will host Northview in a consolation game at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Apr. 1).
SD JEWISH ACADEMY 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 1 — El Cajon Valley avoided a lop-sided shutout in the 4th inning of Wednesday’s (Apr. 1) Division 1A Plus of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament on a run by BRANDON RUMLEY, who slugged his third double in two days.
Other than Rumley’s power stroke, the Braves offense sputtered miserably, limited to singles by DAVID GARCIA and JESUS FAVELA.
The problem for the Braves is that they could not overcome nine errors as San Diego Jewish Academy scored 8 unearned runs.

Bats lead the way for Helix

LA MESA (4-1-15) © The Helix Highlanders, known more for their pitching and defensive prowess, broke out with the bats and overcame seven errors but came up short against the Moorpark Musketeers 12-10 in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Classic Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Helix coach COLE HOLLAND praised the Highlanders’ 10-hit attack but was humiliated by the porous Helix defense.
“The only thing we were missing was cotton candy and the lion tamer in this circus,” he said.
CONNER KONISHI was 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Highlanders played catch-up after the 1st inning when they fell behind 4-1.
A 9-run 2nd inning by Moorpark appeared to put the game away but Helix fought back with five runs in the third inning.
What stunned Coach Holland was the fact that his Highlanders gave up seven errors and only two earned runs.
EL CAJON VALLEY 6, GOMPERS 1 — El Cajon Valley put together its second win in nine games by jumping Gompers in a Division 1A Plus contest of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament on Tuesday (Mar. 31).
The Braves knocked out eight hits, led by BRANDON RUMLEY’s two doubles and three RBI.
CARLOS MEIJIA was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while JESUS FAVELA was 1-for-3 with an RBI. DONOVAN PEREZ-FOSTER and HECTOR CARREON were each 1-for-4 with a run scored.
ALEJANDRO HERRERA turned in a complete game pitching effort, holding Gompers to one run and five hits while walking four and striking out five.
EASTLAKE 5, EL CAPITAN 4 — The El Capitan Vaqueros let one slip through their hands as they gave up four runs in the final two innings that resulted in a 1-run loss in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
“We had the victory right in our hands but we let it slip loose,” said Vaqueros assistant coach STEVE VICKERY.
The Vaqueros (6-4) lost what appeared to be a certain victory to Eastlake (10-1) as the Titans scored four runs in the final two frames.
Eastlake got solo home runs in the 6th inning from Jack Sandberg and Tucker Torano to tie the game 3-3.
El Capitan carried a 4-1 lead into the 6th inning only to see its offense stall.
CHANCE COLSON had a double and a triple in the losing effort.
Bottom line is Titans pitcher Julian Escobedo hammered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th to stake Eastlake to the victory.
MONTE VISTA 2, VISTA GRANDE 1 — Monte Vista snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 7th as DIEGO SANDOVAL rolled an infield single to the shortstop and scored on a triple by ANDREW GONZALES in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Division 4A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament contest against Vista Grande of Arizona.
Gonzales was 3-for-4 on the afternoon and hit the game-winning RBI.
It was a big day for Gonzales as he pitched a complete game effort. He allowed 5 hits, no earned runs, no walks and struck out 4 to raise his record to 2-0.
DAVID GARCIA was 3-for-3 in the winning effort.
GROSSMONT 12, CARLSBAD 4 — The Foothillers laced the Lancers in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
CAMERON HENDERSON led the charge with four hits including a solo home run, two runs and three RBI in the 4th inning. Henderson is kind of an unsung hero with a 4-for-5 under the radar effort.
KYLE PINEDA also got four hits.
Sophomore JAYDEN LOMBARDO (1-0) pitched four innings giving up four hits, two earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts. MARCO BAUTISTA pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits, two runs both earned, two walks and four strikeouts.
MOUNT MIGUEL 10, CASTLE PARK 1 — The Matadors dominated the hill as ENRIQUE KELLER, CHRISTIAN GARCIA and ANDREW MONTIJO combined for a pitching performance that allowed only one earned run and 8 strikeouts in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Division 3A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Catcher ALEX ESTRADA drove in three runs with two hits and Keller went 3-for-3 as the Matadors blew out Castle Park.
Mount Miguel finished with 11 hits.
ANGEL SEATON drove in a pair of runs and was 1-for-3 with 2 RBI. ERIC DE LA ROSA was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple and two RBI.
TORREY PINES 2, STEELE CANYON 0 — Steele Canyon surrendered two runs in the 1st inning – which had to smart considering neither was earned – in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Steele Canyon suffered three errors in the 1st inning – two on one play.
AVERY TUCK pitched a complete game six innings. He did not allow an earned run and struck out seven. He gave up a single in the 2nd inning and a single in the 6th.
“Tuck had a really outstanding outing – one of the best of the year,” noted Cougars assistant coach MARK BRUDER.
VALHALLA 4, POWAY 1 — The visiting Valhalla Norsemen toppled Poway under the lights in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
COLE HENDERSON and GARRETT YOCOM combined to allow only 3 hits and one unearned run.
Valhalla put the game away in the 4th inning with 4 runs after falling behind Poway 1-0 in the 2nd inning. LEWIS DIRKES walked, JEFF HOUGHTBY doubled to left sending Dirkes to third. DOMENIC DONATO was intentionally walked, and C.J. BROWN singled to center, scoring Dirkes. Henderson singled to right, scoring Houghtby. Yocom singled past the shortstop to score Donato, and Brown scored on a sacrifice fly by CASEY O’SULLIVAN.
Bottom line for Valhalla was Henderson allowed one unearned run in five innings. Yocom picked up the save.
WEST HILLS 11, RANCHO LAS VEGAS 2 — The West Hills Wolf Pack won big versus Rancho Las Vegas in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Premier Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Knowing that the Pack needed another solid performance on the mound, the team looked to senior pitcher JOEY KRUG. The proverbial workhorse stepped up big for the Wolf Pack. Tossing 5 scoreless innings while surrendering only 2 infield hits and striking out 4, Krug battled and earned a much needed win in an 11-2 victory.
The Pack showed up with their bats slugging out 11 hits led by seniors COLE PENDLETON who was 2-4 with one run, a stolen base and an RBI, KRIS AGUILAR who went 2-3 with a run and an RBI and BRYCE GIBSON who was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
The Pack also added to the power numbers by getting a clutch triple by DONAVON McCRYSTAL, earning an RBI while getting a stand-up double by first baseman NATE "Bama" LEDFORD. On the bases, the Pack had a total of 5 stolen bases w/ senior ALEC SCALCO leading the charge.
Left-hander JEREMIAH BARR pitched the final two innings, giving up four hits, two runs, walked one and struck out two.
“J.Barr threw some good stuff today,” said Wolf Pack coach MIKE (Cougar) HARWELL. “We plan on keeping the momentum and giving our best effort!”
ST. AUGUSTINE 3, GRANITE HILLS 0 — The struggling Granite Hills Eagles offense did little to help its cause against No. 3 ranked St. Augustine in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Classic Division of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
Granite Hills suffered its second shutout in seven games, wasting quality pitching on both occasions. The Eagles wasted a complete game effort by KENNY LAPIERRE (2-1) who allowed only three runs in a losing effort.
Of course Granite Hills’ lack of offense has been unable to pick up Lapierre’s superior pitching.
The Saints Michael Goodridge pitched a complete game 5-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.
FRANCIS PARKER 9, SANTANA 8 — Santana let a victory slip through their hands as they faltered against Francis Parker in Tuesday’s (Mar. 31) Division 5A of the 65th Annual Lions Tournament.
The Sultans fought back as TRISTEN SALINAS slugged a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning with one out.
Parker (5-3) scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning and Santana was unable to counterpunch.
