AZUSA (5-19-08) -- San Diego Christian College starting
pitcher LANCE JANKE was honored by the Golden State
Athletic Conference as one of five pitchers selected
to the All-GSAC team. Janke, a transfer from Grossmont
College, was the lone member of the Hawks selected by
conference coaches to the 19-member squad.
Janke, despite a 5-6 overall record, was recognized
by the coaches, for his power and consistentancy, ranking
among the GSAC leaders with a 3.20 earned-run average
and finishing fifth among the 10 schools with 79 strikeouts
over 84 1/3 innings of work.
The 6-foot-1 right-hander prepped at University City
High, then became one of four Griffins to join SDCC
when the school fielded its first baseball team for
the 2007 season.

BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (5-1-08) -- The second season
of San Diego Christian College baseball ended pretty
much the same way it began: a competitive ballclub which
at times falls short in the end.
The story held true in Wednesday's (Apr. 30) season
finale as the Hawks scored a run in the 9th inning and
had the tying baserunners aboard with no one out. However,
Cal State San Marcos retired the next three batters
to hold on to a 10-8 decision at Stars Field.
Senior second baseman KENOLI FONSECA closed his college
career on an up note, batting 4-for-5 and driving in
a pair of runs. Fonseca finished leading the ballclub
in runs scored, batting .353 to finish third on the
Hawks behind junior ANDREW HAYASHI (.373) and senior
TYLER PERKINS (.363).
Starting pitcher MATT LUNA left with a 5-4 lead, allowing
just two earned runs before the Cougars rallied late.
Luna remained in the contest as the designated hitter,
going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs, including two
in the 5th to allow SDCC to re-take the lead at 7-4.
However, San Marcos (22-16-1) scored three times in
both the 7th and 8th against the bullpen.
The first rally saw DANE PONCIANO (Mount Miguel HS)
drive in a pair, then the tying run came home on a wild
pitch. An inning later, the go-ahead run scored on a
balk.
Ponciano, the catcher, went 2-for-5 with three RBI,
while designated hitter Austin Way batted 4-for-5 and
scored twice.
The Hawks complete their season with a 19-26 overall
record. They were 14-22 in the Golden State Athletic
Conference to place 8th of 10 ballclubs following a
6th-place finish in their debut campaign.

COSTA MESA (4-30-08) -- San Diego Christian College
closed its Golden State Athletic Conference campaign
with bats blazing Tuesday (Apr. 29), scorching Vanguard
University pitching for four runs and six hits in the
first inning alone, waltzing to a 7-2 decision over
the Lions.
Hawks second baseman KENOLI FONSECA keyed the outburst
with a two-run single to left field for a 2-0 lead,
following by run-scoring doubles by shortstop DANNY
GONZALES and left fielder JEREMY WALLER.
Meanwhile, TIM ACHESON scattered five hits over six
innings to gain the pitching victory. Three SDCC relievers
-- DANIEL REITZ, JERRY CARMICHAEL and NICK LOCKE --
each tossed a shutout inning to preserve the verdict,
as the Hawks (19-25, 14-22 GSAC) finished eighth in
GSAC play.
San Diego Christian collected 12 hits, including two
by both Hawks centerfielders -- starter TYLER PERKINS
and substitute SCOTT WHITTET -- along with two by Gonzales.
Vanguard (17-31, 8-28 GSAC) finished on a down note,
committing six errors to finish the season with 96 errors
in 48 ballgames -- the poorest among the 10 GSAC schools.
There's still one regular season contest remaining
for San Diego Christian, playing host to Cal State San
Marcos at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Apr. 30) at Stars Field.
Sunbirds down Hawks behind Lowell
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-27-08) -- Fresno Pacific
University right fielder Anthony Lowell posted his most
productive day of the season. The College of the Sequoias
transfer knocked in five runs in the opener of Saturday's
(Apr. 26) Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader,
then went 3-for-4 with a key RBI in the nightcap, powering
the NAIA's 12th-ranked Sunbirds to a sweep of San Diego
Christian College, 7-3 and 7-4, at Stars Field.
Despite the victories, Fresno Pacific (34-11, 26-9
GSAC) can no longer catch 5th-ranked Azusa Pacific.
The Cougars (40-8, 28-7 GSAC) clinched the conference
championship after taking a pair from visiting Biola,
12-11 in 11 innings and 18-7.
San Diego Christian grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the
opener.
SEAN WEST singled home TYLER PERKINS, who also singled,
then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. MANNY
HERNANDEZ followed with a basehit, with both runners
advancing into scoring position on a passed ball.
HANK LANTO then drove home Perkins and Hernandez with
a basehit to center for the early lead. The hot-hitting
Lanto, a senior from Modesto , is batting .375 (6-for-16)
with nine RBI over his last four starts.
However, the rest of the afternoon belonged to Lowell,
who batted 6-for-9, with six RBI and three runs scored.
He tied the game with a 3-run homer in the 6th, then
the Sunbirds added four runs in the 7th to unlock a
3-3 tie, capped by a 2-run triple by Lowell .
In game two, the Sunbirds broke a 1-1 tie with three
runs in the 3rd, featuring a run-scoring, ground-rule
double by Lowell .
The Hawks (13-22, 18-31 GSAC) rallied on a solo home
run by DANNY GONZALES in the 4th, then a pair of runs
on ground outs in the 6th, but fell short.
SDCC, which will finish in 8th among the 10 GSAC schools,
concludes the regular season with a road game at Vanguard
on Tuesday, then entertains Cal State San Marcos in
a non-conference ballgame on Wednesday. Both start at
3 p.m.
Hawks stopped by Lions' king
© East County Sports.com
COSTA MESA (4-25-08) -- In a blink of an eye, ANDREW
HAYASHI and KENOLI FONSECA smacked 1st-inning doubles,
giving San Diego Christian College a quick 1-0 lead.
Then the Hawks were stopped by the Lions' king.
Vanguard University pitching ace Richard Jessup yielded
just four additional hits the rest of the afternoon,
leading the Lions to a 6-1 decision over the Hawks in
Thursday's (Apr. 24) Golden State Athletic Conference
ballgame.
Jessup registered 16 outs on ground balls with his
sinker, including all three outs in the 1st, 4th, 7th
and 9th innings, clinching the victory with a game-ending
double play.
Hayaski later added a second double for the Hawks,
otherwise, it was all Vanguard, which scored three times
in the 4th to take the lead for keeps. Included were
a pair of unearned runs off hard-luck loser LANCE JANKE
(5-5), who struck out five against just one walk.
Janke allowed a mere four hits over six innings, but
Jessup was simply more dominate.
Lions first baseman Zachary Falk later homered to open
the 6th.
San Diego Christian (18-23, 13-20 GSAC) will host Fresno
Pacific in a GSAC doubleheader, starting at noon Saturday
at Stars Field.
Hawks post first-ever shutout during sweep of Westmont
© East County Sports.com
SANTA BARBARA (4-20-08) -- San Diego Christian College
senior MATT LUNA, a product of West Hills High, made
school history Saturday (Apr. 19) by becoming the first
Hawks pitcher to toss a shutout, leading to a doubleheader
sweep of host Westmont at Russ Carr Field.
MANNY HERNANDEZ slugged a 3-run triple in the 9th inning
of the opener in a 5-4 victory, then Luna went all seven
innings in a 2-0 decision, giving San Diego Christian
a 4-game season-series sweep of the Warriors in Golden
State Athletic Conference action.
Luna struck out seven without issuing a walk in tossing
a 4-hitter. The lone threat came in the 7th, when pinchhitter
Mark Boujikian belted a one-out double, moving to third
on a ground out.
However, Luna was able to ink his name in school ledgers
with a shallow fly out to SDCC right fielder SEAN WEST
to complete the shutout.
Hernandez had a hand in both runs by the Hawks (18-22,
13-19 GSAC).
West opened the contest with a two-out basehit, stole
second base, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Hernandez
then took ball four for a walk, but when the pitch went
to the backstop, West came home.
In the 5th, Hernandez doubled to right-centerfield,
eventually scoring when HANK LANTO singled to center.
In the opener, Hawks pitcher GARRETT LINGLE went 6
2/3 solid innings, but left trailing 2-1. However, Hernandez
tied the ballgame in the 8th, then SDCC scored four
times in the 9th.
Hernandez slugged a one-out double to left-center,
moved to third when DANNY GONZALES flied out to deep
right, then made it a 2-2 contest when the Westmont
pitcher balked.
An inning later, DAVID MADDOX doubled home West for
a 3-2 lead, with Hernandez later sending his triple
down the right-field line, scoring TYLER PERKINS, ANDREW
HAYASHI and Gonzales.
Westmont (8-31, 4-28 GSAC) answered with two runs in
the 9th on a home run by Terrell Wong, but Hawks reliever
JERRY CARMICHAEL came on to register the final out for
the save.
Hawks go oops, blow 8-0 lead
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-18-08) -- In a "fish
that got away" story, San Diego Christian College
saw an 8-0 advantage slip away, as Concordia University-Irvine
scored 10 times over the final three innings to shock
the Hawks, 16-11, in Thursday's (Apr. 17) Golden State
Athletic Conference ballgame at Stars Field.
The victory gave the Eagles (19-15, 17-13 GSAC) a sweep
of the 2-game series.
Concordia shortstop Nathan Dean and first baseman Dante
Beltramo each went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs to
rally from 8-0 and 10-6 deficits. Concordia took the
lead by scoring six times in the 7th inning, featuring
the go-ahead, two-run single up the middle by Beltramo.
Pinchitter Aric Weinberg also stroked a 2-run single
during the rally, then Concordia scored four more times
in the 9th, two coming home on a Gregg Davison basehit
to left field.
San Diego Christian (16-22, 11-19 GSAC) chased Eagles
starter Derek Bondo for seven runs in 1-plus innings.
Catcher HANK LANTO keyed both 4-run rallies over the
first two innings. In the 1st, six of the first seven
Hawks reached base, including a 2-run single by the
middle by Lanto, who then repeated the feat in the 2nd
to finish with four RBI.
KENOLI FONSECA and MANNY HERNANDEZ also knocked in
a pair of runs, but five SDCC relievers failed to maintain
the advantage.
Next for San Diego Christian is a Saturday (Apr. 19)
doubleheader at Westmont , starting at noon.
Hawks finally topple No. 4 Azusa Pacific
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-13-08) -- For the first
time in school history, San Diego Christian College
finally got the upper hand over nationally ranked Azusa
Pacific.
The Cougars, ranked 4th in the NAIA, had swept the
2007 season series from the Hawks -- frankly, none of
the ballgames were close (composite 43-15 scoring margin)
-- and were on their way to another 4-game sweep in
'08 after capturing the opening game of Saturday's (Apr.
12) Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.
However, after dropping the opener, 12-4, the Hawks
bounced back to down Azusa Pacific, 8-5, for their first
win in eight tries against the Cougars. It was also
the school's third-ever victory over a Top 10 opponent,
having swept a twinbill against Cal Baptist when the
Lancers were ranked No. 8 last season.
San Diego Christian (16-20, 11-17 GSAC) now owns a
10-9 record at Stars Field this season.
The loss by Azusa Pacific opened the door for 14th-ranked
Fresno Pacific to catch the Cougars for the GSAC lead.
However, the Sunbirds also dropped the second game of
a doubleheader Saturday, splitting a pair with Concordia-Irvine.
FPU won the opener 5-1; the visiting Eagles took the
nightcap, 4-2.
The Hawks next play at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Apr. 16) at
Concordia (17-15, 15-13 GSAC).
Azusa Pacific's point of view re-cap
By Joe Reinsch,
APU Media Relations
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-13-08) -- The NAIAs
No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific wasted no time getting
a valuable doubleheader split on the road Saturday
at San Diego Christian, winning the opener, 12-4,
before dropping the nightcap by an 8-5 margin.
Second-place Fresno Pacific split at home with
Concordia, keeping the Cougars GSAC lead
stable at 1 game over the Sunbirds.
Senior shortstop Matt Venegas led off the first
game with a double to center field, and he scored
the games first run on junior centerfielder
Kirk Nieuwenhuis 1-out double down the left-field
line. The 1-0 lead held up over the next 2 innings
before the Cougars sent 14 batters to the plate
in an 8-run third inning that pushed the lead
to 9-0.
Nieuwenhuis drew a pair of walks in the inning,
leading off the inning with a base on balls that
started the extended rally. He stole second, took
third on a balk and then scored on senior designated
hitter Stephen Kohatsus single down the
right-field line, 1 of just 4 Cougar hits in the
inning. With runners on second and third after
junior leftfielder Stephen Gillettes double
to left, senior catcher Derrick Keeton was hit
by pitch to load the bases. Junior third baseman
Ryan Dowell was hit by Hawks starter Garrett Lingles
2-1 pitch to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead, and
Lingle walked the next 2 batters to bring in another
run before leaving the game with a 5-0 deficit.
San Diego Christian reliever Jesus Nevarez didnt
fare much better than Lingle, walking Nieuwenhuis
for the second time in the inning before surrendering
back-to-back run-scoring singles to Kohatsu and
sophomore first baseman Brice Cutspec to push
Azusa Pacifics advantage to 9-0. Nevarez
was replaced by Donald Arthur, who hit Gillette
with his second pitch before ending the nightmare
with an inning-ending strikeout. The 3 Hawks pitchers
combined to walk 4 batters, hit 3 more and surrender
4 base hits in the third inning alone.
Gillettes second double of the game brought
in another run and capped a 3-run fifth that began
with another Nieuwenhuis leadoff walk and gave
the Cougars a commanding 12-1 lead at the contests
halfway point. Gillette finished with a game-high
3 hits in a 3-for-4 effort in the opener, and
14 Cougars were put on base by way of walks or
hit by pitch. Senior righthander Andrew Shive
scattered 2 runs on 6 hits and struck out 4 in
6.1 innings of work to pick up the win.
Gillette was 3-for-4 again in the nightcap, but
he was Azusa Pacifics only multi-hit batter
in the contest. The Cougars surrendered 3 first-inning
runs to the Hawks, putting leadoff batter Andrew
Hayashi on base with a hit by pitch before back-to-back
base hits gave San Diego Christian a 1-0 lead
before the first out had been recorded. The Hawks
scored their second and third runs on consecutive
groundouts.
Sophomore Chris Feicht delivered a 2-out pinch-hit
single with runners on second and third in the
second inning, cutting the lead to 3-1, and the
Cougars briefly took the lead an inning later
with a 3-run third. Venegas drew a leadoff walk,
Dowell singled to right, and Kohatsu was hit by
pitch to load the bases for Nieuwenhuis, who delivered
a game-tying 2-run single to right with no outs.
Cutspecs groundout scored Kohatsu from third
base for a 4-3 Azusa Pacific lead, but the Hawks
escaped further damage by nabbing a would-be Cougar
base-stealer for the second out before an inning-ending
groundout.
The lead was short-lived, as San Diego Christian
tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the third, with
Manny Hernandez and Kensoli Fonseca delivering
back-to-back 2-run singles with 1 out before the
Cougars turned a double play to end the inning
with a 7-4 deficit. The Cougars loaded the bases
in the fourth and fifth innings without scoring,
then loaded them again with 2 outs in the seventh
inning after Gillette hit a 1-out RBI double that
cut the lead to 8-5. Nevarez, who entered with
runners on first and third with 1 out in the seventh,
threw a wild pitch and walked a batter before
getting the final groundout, picking up the eventful
save.
With the split, Azusa Pacific is now 33-8 overall,
21-7 GSAC, while San Diego Christian is now 16-20
overall, 11-17 GSAC. The Cougars return to action
with a midweek home-and-away series with fourth-place
California Baptist, which has won 8 of its past
10 games, including a home doubleheader sweep
of Fresno Pacific. Azusa Pacific hosts the GSACs
hottest team on Wednesday, April 16, followed
by a visit to the Lancers on Thursday, April 17,
with both games scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

Sea Lions homers top SDCC
© East County Sports.com
POINT LOMA (4-11-08) -- The pitcher's duel between San
Diego Christian College's LANCE JANKE and Point Loma
Nazarene's Dais Koenig tipped towards the side of the
host Sea Lions when Chris Huston and Kurt Steinhauer
hit late home runs for a 5-2 victory at Carroll Land
Stadium.
Thursday's (Apr. 10) decision gave the teams a split
of their Golden State Athletic Conference series.
The ballgame was tied at 1-1 on an ANDREW HAYASHI groundout
to score JEREMY WALLER in the 3rd, offset by an unearned
run by PLNU in the 5th.
However, an inning later, Huston smacked a two-out,
solo homer to right-centerfield. Then in the 7th, the
Sea Lions scored three times, capped by a two-run shot
to center by Steinhauer.
Hawks centerfielder TYLER PERKINS collected an RBI
on a sacrifice fly in the 8th, but Sea Lions reliever
Robie Naegele pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 9th
save of the season and prevent SDCC from sweeping the
4-game season series.
San Diego Christian (15-19, 10-16 GSAC) hosts conference
leading and 4th-ranked Azusa Pacific on Saturday (Apr.
12) in a noon doubleheader at Stars Field.
Hawks tsunami the Sea Lions
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-10-08) -- San Diego Christian
College might have settled into cruise control mood
after scoring four 8th-inning runs on as many consecutive
hits to seemingly put away visiting Point Loma Nazarene.
But when the Sea Lions answered with three runs in
the 9th, Hawks reliever TIM ACHESON was called to close
out the contest, allowing the hosts to hang on to post
a 9-7 triumph in Golden State Athletic Conference action
at Stars Field.
Acheson, knowing he needed only to get batters out
to escape the jam, allowed a sacrifice fly and a single
for two PLNU runs, but then registered a shallow fly
ball out and a grounder to collect the save by pumping
fastballs at Sea Lions batters.
San Diego Christian scored twice in the 7th to assume
a 5-4 lead when MANNY HERNANDEZ collected a clutch,
two-out double to right-centerfield, bringing home KENOLI
FONSECA and DAN FLANNERY.
Then the Hawks delivered what they thought was the
knockout blow in the 8th, featuring consecutive run-scoring
hits by SEAN WEST (triple to score ANDREW HAYASHI),
DANNY GONZALES, Flannery (double) and Fonseca.
DONALD ARTHUR, a product of Steele Canyon High who
finished 10th in the East County with a .403 batting
average in 2004, collected his first collegiate pitching
victory. He later pitched for Grossmont College but
got injured.
"Several of his ex-teammates at Grossmont asked
him to join us, and he's been a nice addition,"
said head coach PAT HORVATH. "He was our back-up
first baseman, but he wanted to play and we needed some
pitching, so he's been working at it for the past few
weeks. He's a good kid who's worked hard, and now he's
getting his chance."
The Sea Lions (19-18, 12-13 GSAC) had two runners on
base in the 7th with one out, but Arthur kept the score
at 5-4 with a strikeout and a pop out. The Hawks (15-18,
10-15 GSAC) then answered with two runs to take the
lead for keeps, albeit barely, to level Arthur's record
at 1-1.
The top of the Hawks lineup dominated, going a composite
8-for-12, as Hayaski went 3-for-4, right fielder SEAN
WEST batted 3-for-3, then Gonzales going 2-for-5 with
two RBI.
The teams complete the home-and-home series Thursday
at 3 p.m. at PLNU's Carroll Land Stadium, the the Hawks
host a Saturday doubleheader against GSAC leading Azusa
Pacific, starting at noon. Azusa 's Cougars are ranked
4th nationally in the NAIA.
Mustangs again sweep SDCC
© East County Sports.com
SANTA CLARITA (4-6-08) -- San Diego Christian College
was stopped by a pair of solid performances by pitchers
from The Master's College, dropping a Golden State Athletic
Conference doubleheader to the Mustangs, 10-3 and 4-3,
Saturday (Apr. 5) at Reese Field.
In the opener, Tim Woodward allowed just one run over
8 innings, raising his record to a GSAC best 8-2 this
season. In the nightcap, Joe Zeller allowed a run in
the 7th (and final) inning to finish with a 5-hitter
over the Hawks.
San Diego Christian, trailing 4-2, saw HANK LANTO reach
on an error, eventually scoring on a ground out by KENOLI
FONSECA, but Zeller got the final out for their second
sweep of the Hawks this season.
Hawks designated hitter DAN FLANNERY went 3-for-4 and
scored a run in the first contest, while DAVID MADDOX
went 2-for-3, driving in a pair of runs with a triple
in the 7th, then on a fielder's choice grounder in the
9th in his homecoming outing. The junior infielder hails
from nearby Valencia .
In the second ballgame, the Hawks held a 2-0 lead before
The Master's (24-12-1, 12-12 GSAC)) parlayed four consecutive
RBI singles to take the lead.
San Diego Christian (14-18, 9-15 GSAC), which just
completed an 8-of-12 stretch on the road, will play
3-of-4 at home next week. The Hawks will play a home-and-home
series with Point Loma Nazarene, then host GSAC leading
and 4th nationally ranked Azusa Pacific in a Saturday
twinbill.
Janke aces Cal Baptist
© East County Sports.com
RIVERSIDE (4-4-08) -- LANCE JANKE, the ace of the San
Diego Christian College pitching staff, once again delivered
on Thursday (Apr. 3), powering the Hawks past host Cal
Baptist, 7-2, in Golden State Athletic Conference action
at Totman Stadium.
Janke, a transfer from Grossmont College, struck out
six and allowed just one earned run in eight innings.
All seven hits allowed were singles.
Relief pitcher JESUS NEVAREZ, a Purple Heart recipient
from the War in Iraq , then struck out two Lancers in
the 9th inning to close-out the victory and give San
Diego Christian (14-16, 9-13 GSAC) a split of the 2-game
series. The decision snapped Cal Baptist's 3-game winning
streak.
TYLER PERKINS backed the strong pitching performance
by batting 3-for-4, including his first home run of
the season. The centerfielder tagged the first pitch
of the 7th inning for a leadoff homer.
Cal Baptist (23-13, 12-10 GSAC) reached Janke in the
1st, scoring twice on consecutive RBI singles by J.P.
LaPointe and Levi Garrett. The Lancers still had the
bases loaded with no one out, but Janke escaped the
jam with a strikeout and a double play grounder, then
limited Cal Baptist to just three additional hits the
rest of the ballgame.
The Hawks' comeback started in the 2nd, when GARRETT
LINGLE doubled, then scored on a DANNY FLANNERY single.
SDCC then scored five times in the 3rd to grab the lead
for keeps.
The tying run came as a gift, when DANNY GONZALES was
hit by a pitch with the basesloaded, scoring pinchrunner
JEREMY WALLER. First baseman MANNY HERNANDEZ followed
with a 2-run single to left, followed by run-scoring
ground balls by Lingle and Flannery.
On Flan's grounder, the throw went home, but the catcher
failed to apply the tag to gift wrap another run to
the Hawks. Despite the fielder's choice, the designated
hitter finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
The victory moved the Hawks within a game of The Master's
and Point Loma Nazarene -- both 10-12 -- for sixth place
and a potential NAIA regional playoff berth. SDCC and
The Master's meet in a doubleheader this Saturday at
noon in Santa Clarita, while the Sea Lions host two
contests with Biola.
Hawks doomed by 6 errors
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (4-3-08) -- Scuffling on defense
in recent weeks, the flood gates opened on San Diego
Christian College on Wednesday (Apr. 2), committing
a half-dozen errors to allow four early unearned runs
in a 13-7 setback to visiting Cal Baptist at Stars Field.
The game was the first of a two-game series, which concludes
Thursday in Riverside.
Lancers centerfielder Robert Lundy opened the ballgame
with a leadoff homer, then the ball started bouncing
around. A pair of errors in the 2nd inning made it 3-0,
then another miscue in the 4th pushed the margin to
7-1.
However, San Diego Christian made things interesting
with six runs over the middle three innings, cutting
the deficit to 10-7.
THERON WEST (single) and SEAN WEST (double) knocked
in runs in the 4th. An inning later, DANNY GONZALES
singled home a run, later scoring on a wild pitch, followed
by an RBI single by Theron West, chasing Cal Baptist
starter Kevin Duke to prevent the University of Oklahoma
transfer from gaining the victory.
But the only Hawks run off the bullpen was a 6th-inning
sacrifice fly by KENOLI FONSECA, the lone blemish in
four innings of work by Cal Baptist relievers. Scripps
Ranch High product Kyle Tye collected his first win
of the season, sending the Lancers to 23-12 overall
(12-9 in Golden State Athletic Conference play).
SDCC (13-16, 8-13 GSAC) held a 13-12 advantage in hits,
including two each by Fonseca, Gonzales, Theron West,
ANDREW HAYASHI and BRYAN KOBARA, but the Hawks stranded
11 baserunners.

BARONA INDIANA RESERVATION (3-30-08) -- Biola Universitys
Kris Cook batted 5-for-8 and drove in five runs Saturday
(Mar. 29), powering the Eagles to a Golden State Athletic
Conference doubleheader sweep of San Diego Christian
College, 14-3 and 9-1, at Stars Field.
Cook, the designated hitter, hit a grand slam in the
first contest, one of four homers by the 21st-ranked
Eagles. Moving to catcher for the second ballgame, Cook
went 3-for-4 to back a complete-game effort by winning
pitcher Josh Baas.
For the Hawks, TYLER PERKINS, THERON WEST and HANK
LANTO each collected two of the team's 11 hits in the
opener. Game Two saw shortstop DANNY GONZALES bat 2-for-3
and scoring their only run on an ANDREW HAYASHI basehit
in the 4th inning.
The triumphs moved Biola (21-9, 13-7 GSAC) into second
place past Fresno Pacific. San Diego Christian (13-15,
8-12 GSAC) remains one game behind local rival Point
Loma Nazarene.
The Hawks will play at home-and-home series with Cal
Baptist, playing in Riverside on Wednesday, then home
on Thursday -- both start at 3 p.m.
Concordia catches the Hawks
© East County Sports.com
IRVINE (3-28-08) -- Moments after San Diego Christian
College scored in the 5th inning to catch host Concordia-Irvine,
the Eagles answered back with five quick runs, skating
to an 11-2 victory over the Hawks in Golden State Athletic
Conference action Thursday (Mar. 27) at Preus Field.
SDCC seocnd baseman ANDREW HAYASHI lifted a sacrifice
fly to centerfield, allowing TYLER PERKINS to score
after he singled and moved to third base on an error.
However, Concordia right fielder Michael Gonzalez doubled
home a run, followed by a 2-run single by catcher Chase
Moltz. Gonzalez batted 3-for-4 with three runs and five
RBI, including a 2-run homer in the 7th, then a 2-run
single in the 8th to put away the triumph.
For the Hawks (13-13), shortstop DANNY GONZALES batted
3-for-4, while centerfielder Perkins went 2-for-4 and
scored a run. However, despite 11 hits, SDCC stranded
a dozen baserunners.
The decision leaves the teams tied in the GSAC standings
at 9-9, two games behind third-standing Biola (10-7
GSAC). Point Loma Nazarene can make it a 3-way deadlock
with a victory at Vanguard.
Hawks' youth serves
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (3-26-08) -- It was a day
for the youth on the San Diego Christian College baseball
team to step forward, as a pair of Hawks underclassmen
proved pivotal in rallying for Tuesday's (Mar. 25) 5-4
non-conference victory over University of Sioux Falls
(S.D.) at Stars Field.
"It gave us a chance to play some of our younger
guys who worked hard and deserved a chance to play,"
noted SDCC head coach PAT HORVATH. "I was extremely
pleased with their efforts."
The lightly used BRYAN BOBARA and Christian High product
DANNY MITCHELL were at the heart of the comeback.
After Sioux Falls snapped a 1-1 ballgame with three
runs in the 6th, the Hawks applied pressure on the Coyotes
defense, which began to crumble.
A pair of errors saw Kobara scored an unearned run
in the 7th. An inning later, the junior from Santa Cruz
would become the focal point when the Hawks (13-12)
struck for three additional runs to grab the lead.
With runners at the corners, Kobara doubled deep to
centerfield to tie the contest. Mitchell followed with
an RBI single to left to plate Kobara with the go-ahead
run.
Senior releiver MATT LUNA then capped a solid 2 1/3
inning effort of 2-hit ball out of the bullpen to gain
the pitching victory. He survived a lead single in the
9th with a shallow fly ball and a double play grounder
to ANDREW HAYASHI at second base, as shortstop DANNY
GONZALES completed the pivot and throw.
First baseman MANNY HERNANDEZ was the only player on
either team to register multiple hits, going 2-for-3
with a walk.
Freshman pitcher JERRY CARMICHEL tossed four solid
innings for San Diego Christian. The product of Snowflake,
Ariz. , allowed just one hit and an earned run in his
first collegiate start.
Sioux Falls saw left-fielder Aaron Baken for 1-for-2
with two RBI, featuring a go-ahead, 2-run double in
the 6th.
The visiting Cougars (4-12), who have lost almost half
of their schedule due to inclement weather in the Northern
Plains, come from an area not known as a mecca for baseball.
Among the handful of 36 major-leagues hailing from
the Mount Rushmore state include pitchers TERRY FORSTER
(8-0 career postseason record after prepping at Santana
High) and Floyd Bannister, catcher Terry Francona, and
Hall of Fame manager Sparky (George) Anderson.
San Marcos rallies to nip Hawks

ESCONDIDO (3-25-08) -- A busy week full of five contests
over six days opened on a sour note for San Diego Christian
College after wasting a 5-1 lead in falling to Cal State
San Marcos, 6-5, in Monday's (Mar. 25) non-conference
contest at Escondido High School.
Hawks starter GARRETT LINGLE tossed six solid innings
of 3-hit ball, allowing just a sacrifice fly for a run
in the 5th. SDCC answered back immediately when HANK
LANTO led off the 6th with a booming homer to right
for a 5-1 advantage.
However, the Cougars (12-14-1) answered with two runs
in the 7th, loading the bases then receiving a pair
forced-in runs on a walk and a hit batsman.
In the 8th, San Marcos received back-to-back home runs
by Mike Penaand and Jackson Chapelone to open the inning,
then in the 9th, a passed ball allowed El Capitan High
product LOUIE RUSSO to score the winning run.
San Diego Christian (12-12) built an early lead behind
RBI single by CHAD INDERWIESHE in the 2nd, then a booming
3-run homer by ANDREW HAYASHI, which hit the batter's
eye in dead-centerfield.
Hayashi went 2-for-4 to continue his torrid hitting
pace. The junior second baseman is batting .458 (11-for-24)
over his last six ballgames.
The Hawks return home Tuesday (Mar. 25) for a game
which was added to the schedule recently, entertaining
the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) at Stars Field,
starting at 2:30 p.m.
The USF Cougars are 4-11 after dropping their Monday
doubleheader at UC San Diego, 10-1 and 6-2, to open
a West Coast roadtrip. UCSD's Tritons are now 23-7 overall.

La Verna rallies past SDCC

LA VERNE (3-18-08) -- Moments after San Diego Christian
College first baseman MANNY HERNANDEZ snapped a 1-1
deadlock with a solo homer in the 7th inning, the University
of La Verne answered by scoring eight times in the home
half of the inning, gaining a 9-2 non-conference victory
over the Hawks at Ben Hines Field.
Designated hitter Scott Marcus (3-for-5) laced a go-ahead,
2-run double to centerfield, then Mike Moretti later
added a grand slam, as the Leopards registered eight
hits off five SDCC pitchers in the frame to propel La
Verna (9-8-1) over the .500 mark.
Hawks third baseman DAVID MADDOX batted 2-for-3 for
San Diego Christian, which fell to 12-11. The game ended
one out short of regulation due to darkness.

FRESNO (3-16-08) -- San Diego Christian College exploded
for six runs in the 9th inning to snap a 4-4 tie, lifting
the Hawks to a 10-4 triumph over No. 23 Fresno Pacific
to split Saturday's (Mar. 15) Golden State Athletic
Conference doubleheader.
The split prevented the Sunbirds from gaining a virtual
tie for the GSAC lead with second-ranked Azusa Pacific,
while moving the Hawks (12-10 8-9 GSAC) to within 1
1/2 games of third-place Biola.
The decisive inning included a 2-run single by ANDREW
HAYASHI, while Fresno Pacific (1-46, 10-4 GSAC) committed
three errors in the inning, making a winner of Hawks
reliever BRANDON ABELL, who tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings.
The hot-hitting Hayashi, who was moved from second
to third in the San Diego Christian batting order for
this ballgame, finished with his best batting performance
of the season. He went 4-for-6 with two runs scored
and three RBI.
Being the second game of a GSAC twinbill, the contest
was only slated for 7 innings. Thus, San Diego Christian
technically won in extra innings, make the Hawks 3-0
all-time against the Sunbirds in extras.
Fresno Pacific took the opener, 3-2, scored twice in
the 8th and once in the 9th to steal away the win on
an RBI double by pinchhitter Casey Padgett.
San Deigo Christian's lone contest during spring break
is 3 p.m. Monday at La Verne (8-8-1).

BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (3-13-08) -- Unable to do
anything on the road all season, Concordia University
suddenly discovered the answer -- strong pitching.
After going winless for more than a month away from
Irvine, the Eagles won for the third time in four road
starts by withstanding a rally from San Diego Christian
College to win, 6-3, in Golden State Athletic Conference
action Wednesday (Mar. 12) at Stars Field.
Concordia mounted a 5-0 lead behind the pitching of
Enrique Lechuga (5-1), who allowed just one hit through
the first four innings. Lachuga is the reigning GSAC
pitcher of the year, posting an 11-1 record and a 2.95
earned-run average last season.
The Hawks trimmed the deficit to 5-3, but Eagles closer
Cameron Bayne tossed two innings of no-hit ball for
the save. A native of Hawai'i , Bayne walked one --
the first batter he faced in the 8th -- otherwise, SDCC
leadoff batters went a collective 0-for-8 for the contest.
For the San Diego Christian (11-9, 7-8 GSAC), second
baseman ANDREW HAYASKI and first baseman MANNY HERNANDEZ
went 2-for-4 each, but the rest of the team managed
just three hits. Concordia (7-8, 6-7 GSAC) saw designated
hitter Cody Kissell go 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and
a run scored.
The Hawks completed their 7-game homestand with a 4-3
mark. They next travel to the central valley to meet
Fresno Pacific in a doubleheader, starting at noon on
Saturday.

BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (3-9-09) -- Senior right-hander
LANCE JANKE tossed a complete-game 6-hitter for San
Diego Christian College on Saturday (Mar. 8), but the
Hawks needed to settle for a split in a pair of Golden
State Athletic Conference romps at Stars Field.
The Hawks bested visiting Vanguard University , 8-1,
but the Lions stormed back to take the night cap, 12-2,
snapping SDCC's 5-game GSAC winning streak.
Janke, a product of Grossmont College and University
City High, gained his third complete game in five starts
this season, striking out eight Lions and setting down
10 batters in order following a lead double to open
the contest.
Meanwhile, San Diego Christian scored three times after
two were out in the 4th, then five more in the 8th to
bust the contest open.
The first rally saw JEREMY WALLER single through the
left side of the infield for a pair of runs, then an
error -- the first of four committed by Vanguard --
made it 3-0.
Shortstop DANNY GONZALES batted 3-for-4 and scored
twice to lead the offense, while first baseman MANNY
HERNANDEZ added a pair of basehits.
In game two, Vanguard centerfielder Tyson Leighton
registered an RBI triple and a 2-run homer for the Lions
(7-13, 3-11 GSAC). The Hawks managed just five hits,
including a 2-for-3 outing by second baseman ANDREW
HAYASHI.
GSAC batting leader KENOLI FONSECA went 1-for-8 in
the doubleheader for the Hawks, dropping his average
to .442.

Wednesday (Mar.12) at 2:30 p.m. against Concordia.
Hawks rally past Point Loma
Preisendorfer near-perfect in relief
© East County Sports.com
BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (3-7-08) -- In what could
statistically be called the strongest relief appearance
in school history, senior right-hander CLINT PREISENDORFER
tossed 4 1/3 innings of 1-hit ball, allowing San Diego
Christian College to rally past Point Loma Nazarene,
7-4, in Golden State Athletic Conference action Thursday
(Mar. 6) at Stars Field.
After the visitors had already scored three times to
assume a 4-3 advantage, Preisendorfer entered to kill
a Sea Lions rally in the 5th inning. From then on, PLNU
(11-9, 6-6 GSAC) would only get a 7th-inning double
from Kaohi Downing the rest of the way. Downing finished
batting 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, all coming
in the first half of the ballgame.
Preisendorfer only struck out one, getting most of
his outs on pop-ups and shallow fly balls, including
consecutive pops to close the contest.
San Diego Christian (10-7, 6-6 GSAC), immediately after
losing the lead, took it right back with four runs in
the home-half of the 5th.
With two runners on, an error by the Sea Lions second
baseman allowed the tying run to score. Hawks catcher
BRAD INDERWIESCHE followed with an RBI single for the
lead, then third baseman DAVID MADDOX later added a
2-run single to center.
Hawks left fielder KENOLI FONSECA continued his hot
hitting by going 2-for-4, while second baseman ANDREW
HAYASHI and first baseman MANNY HERNANDEZ also added
a pair of hits each.
Prior to Preisendorfer's performance, the best efforts
by a Hawks reliever were last season: a 4 1/3-inning,
2-hit outing by MATT LUNA (at Fresno Pacific, Mar. 29)
and three full frames of 1-hit ball by BRANDON ABELL
(vs. Concordia, Apr. 28).
San Diego Christian wraps up its 7-game homestand by
hosting Vanguard University for a Saturday (Mar. 8)
doubleheader starting at 11 a.m., then entertains Concordia
next Wednesday (Mar. 12) at 2:30 p.m.
Cougars find their Way
Hawks fall in 13 innings

BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION (3-5-08) -- The longest day
of the season for Cal State San Marcos left fielder
Austin Way ended on an up note. After committing an
error and going hitless all afternoon, the senior doubled
home the go-ahead run in the 13th inning, lifting the
Cougars past host San Diego Christian College, 6-3,
in Tuesday's (Mar. 4) non-conference game at Stars Field.
The loss was the first extra innings setback in Hawks
history. It was also the longest contest (in innings)
for both schools, which each initiated baseball programs
in 2007.
Ricardo Moran opened the 13th with a lead single. One
out later, Way sent a drive to right-centerfield, then
scored on another double by Terry Moritz. A third run
scored on an error.
The runs ended a string of 10 consecutive shutout innings
by Hawks pitchers BRANDON ABELL and TIM ACHESON. Cougars
designated hitter Tristan Gale slugged a one-out homer
in the 3rd for San Marcos (8-8 overall) to claim a 3-1
lead, before SDCC put together its solid succession
of zeroes.
San Diego Christian (9-7) moved even in the 7th. Catcher
HANK LANTO, who matched teammate TYLER PERKINS with
three hits on the day, reached on an infield single.
Pinchrunner JEREMY WALLER advanced on a balk, then a
DANNY GONZALES bunt went for a basehit when the Cougars'
infield failed to cover first base.
Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to trim the deficit
to 3-2, then a ground ball to the right side by GARRETT
LINGLE tied it.
Lanto earlier registered an RBI single in the 1st to
score KENOLI FONSECA to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Cougars reliever David Julio tossed the final 4 2/3
innings to gain the triumph. He allowed just two hits
and struck out two.
