Ranked as one of the top 40 college prospects nationally
by Student Sports, Majam hit .725 with 11 homers
and 35 RBI. In the circle, she posted a 13-1 pitching
record with a 1.38 ERA and struck out 150 batters in
76.1 innings. Her reported career totals also included
a .654 batting average in 74 games plus 34 homers and
108 RBI.
Said Cal-Hi Sports editor Mark Tennis on Majam, "Sure,
the level of competition, even for small schools, wasn’t
strong, but Majam is headed for the SEC to play next
at Ole Miss. She’s also keeping up a family tradition
of playing at the next level. Three older sisters –
Mari (Northwestern), Kelly (Hawaii) and Allison (Colorado
State) – all played at the Division I level."
Tennis noted that Ginger Bial, who played at The Bishop’s
of La Jolla in 1990, is the only other San Diego Section
choice on the all-time list of small school state players
of the year. Just two years ago, the winner was Cheridan
Hawkins of Anderson, who was the Pac-12 Pitcher of the
Year this season for Oregon.
Majam was coached by former West Hills stanbdout LINDSAY
SUTTON, who is believed to be the first perosn to win
CIFSDS fastpitch crowns both as a player(1999) and a
coach.

THE 2014 ALL-EAST COUNTY™ TEAM
Horne, Altmeyer share Player of the Year citation
Horne, a four-time, first team honoree on the All-East
County team, was named the Grossmont Hills League player
of the year, and was a threat on both offense (.450) and
defense, bringing another league title to the Wolf Pack.
The same could be said for Altmeyer, the player of
the year for the Eastern League champion Patriots. Her
batting average was even better (.481) against an arguably
tougher schedule. Plus, it's rare for a second baseman
to be rated so highly among infielders (such laurels
more often go to shortstops and first basemen).
Horne and Altmeyer
were also named to the All-CIFSDS team as
selected annually by the media under the auspices
of the San Diego Hall of Champions. The Cal State Northridge
bound Horne was a first-team pick, while Altmeyer
made the second team, along with Mira Mesa
shortstop Quirisa Mauga, an Arizona recruit.
So even if one wants to list Horne as the winner as a
career award and Altmeyer for the slightly better season,
the players will share the award for the 2014 season.
It's the first time the award has been split since
2010 (Jenny Lahitte, Granite Hills; and Lorena Klopp,
Steele Canyon ), and only the third split this century.
There is also a split for freshman of the year, with
HALLE KYLER of Granite Hills and MADISON JAMES of Patrick
Henry winning as the pitcher, and DESTINY BACON of Grossmont
and RYLEIGH DOBYNS of West Hills named as field players.
Coach of the year is MARK OBNEY of Valhalla, who worked
the Norsemen to a big second-half run to the season,
becoming a finalist for the CIF Division I title before
falling to five-time champion Mater Dei Catholic in
the title game.

The Valhalla run was fueled by senior third baseman CARLEE
WALLACE, the East County newcomer of the year. After sitting
out the first month of the season after transferring from
Foothills Christian (frosh) and Francis Parker (11/12),
she established both East County and Grossmont Conference
single-season records with 13 home runs.
The unsung hero is KATIE CARMICHAEL of El Capitan .
The Ivy League bound pitcher overcame a pair of obstacles
before finally leading the Vaqueros to a share of the
Grossmont Valley League crown. She rarely pitched as
an underclassman for three years behind national recruit
DELANIE GOURLEY, then battled a back injury throughout
her senior season to pitch every meaningful ballgame
for the Vaqueros.
