with improved productivity

LAKESIDE (4-1-11) Granite Hills High switches
between KIMMY TRIOLO and DESIREE MEJIA in the pitching
circle, so when one isn't pitching, the other seeks
to contribute in other ways.
On Thursday (Mar. 31), with Triolo in a difficult duel
against El Capitan's DELANIE GOURLEY, it was Mejia who
was the difference-maker in gaining a Grossmont Conference
Tournament triumph over the Vaqueros. Filling the batting
order as the designated player, Mejia registered a pair
of go-ahead hits, including the game-winner in the 8th
inning of a 4-1 triumph.
Mejia, who broke a scoreless contest with a run-scoring
single in the 6th, hooked a 2-run double just inside
the chalk down the right-field line in the 8th when
the Eagles scored three times to gain the team's fourth
win in their last five outings.
"I didn't put any pressure on myself, but I still
felt I had to execute for my team," said Mejia.
"It's all of us all together working hard in practice,
then showing it in the game."

A series of contributors set the stage for Mejia.
Sophomore RAE SHEW opened the 8th by reaching on an
error, Triolo slapped a liner off Gourley's glove for
an infield hit, then junior NICOLE OBNEY was hit by
a pitch to load the bases.
Mejia then went inside-out with her swing, placing
the ball over El Cap's first baseman. Two batters later,
a clean single to left field by RAE SHEW provided a
bonus run.
"Desiree is our 'go to' player and always seems
to come through," noted Triolo. "When we need
a hit, she's our clutch hitter."
Triolo, meanwhile, escaped her own jam when the Vaqueros
refused to roll over and twice brought the potential
game-tying run to the plate in their half of the 8th.
After Gourley reach on an error, TAYLOR HUNT short-hopped
the wall in left for a booming double. However, Triolo
coaxed a foul pop and a soft grounder both to
Obney at first base to cap her complete-game
effort.
Meanwhile, Gourley suffered yet another difficult setback
despite registering 14 strikeouts against just a single
walk.
Down 1-0 after Mejia's initial RBI basehit, El Capitan
forced extra innings with a run in the 7th.
KATIE CARMICHAEL stroked a basehit, taking second base
when the ball went through an outfielder. NICOLE BALINGER
bunted pinchrunner MacKENZIE GANDY to third on the sacrifice,
with Gandy later scoring by beating the throw to the
plate on a grounder by center fielder FELICIA ARCAMO.
SANTANA 3, STEELE CANYON 2 The Sultans
gained a measure of revenge from an earlier loss by
taking a wire-to-wire victory over the Cougars in Thursday's
(Mar. 31) key Grossmont Conference Tournament contest.
The win kept Santana within a game of Valley Pool-leading
Mira Mesa in the quest for a GCT championship game berth.
Meanwhile, Steele Canyon and Helix dropped out of a
3-way tie for the Hills Pool lead, leaving West Hills
alone in first place.
The Sultans struck early with two runs in the 1st inning.
ARIEL RASMUSSON opened with a walk, moved to second
on a wild pitch, then scored when a drive by AMANDA
GRABLE hit the fence in left-center field. KAYTI GRABLE
followed with a double to advance pinchrunner ALEX BREIDT
to third base, scoring on a sacrifice fly to left by
CAITLIN ARNDT.
After Steele Canyon halved the lead, Breidt would again
score as a courtesy runner in the 3rd following a lead
single by Kayti Grable. AMBER SCHISLER walked, then
EMILY SCHISLER pounded a deep double. Breidt would come
home to make it 3-1, but the ensuing pinchrunner was
out at the plate.
Steele Canyon placed the potential tying and go-ahead
runners on base in the 7th, but Amber Schisler would
coax a fly out to her senior sister in center field
for the final out. The sophomore pitcher struck out
three to collect the complete-game triumph.
No information was reported by Steele Canyon.
VALHALLA 7, MONTE VISTA 4 Norsemen senior
TORREY ROOK rocked a tie-breaking, 2-run double in the
5th inning Thursday (Mar. 31), then pitched the final
two innings to save the first varsity victory for starting
pitcher KYLA CLAPHAM.
The host Monarchs jumped to an early 3-1 lead, but
Valhalla broke through with four runs in the 5th, then
a pair of markers in the 6th, gaining the school's first
Grossmont Conference Tournament triumph of the season.
Trailing by two runs, a series of Monte Vista throwing
errors allowed CANDICE STAMPER (walk) and DIONNA SMITH
(fielder's choice) to come home and tie the game. Rook
followed with a deep drive to left-center to bring home
Clapham (sac bunt; reached on fielder's choice) and
NAOMI TELLEZ (safe on error).
Monte Vista got a run back on a bases-loaded walk to
make it 5-4, but the Norsemen answered right back with
a 2-out rally when MADISON HAUSEUR (hit by pitch), Smith
(walk) and Clapham (walk) loaded the bases.
MADISON LABSHERE followed with a clutch basehit to
center field, bringing home Hauseur and Smith.
WEST HILLS 13, MOUNT MIGUEL 0 (5 inn.)
Wolf Pack sophomore MELISSA EGGLESTON came within one
batter of tossing a perfect game, yet still achieved
East County's first no-hitter of the season after blanking
the Matadors in Thursday's (Mar. 31) Grossmont Conference
Tournament ballgame.
The lone blemish came on a 1-out walk to Mount Miguel
senior captain RAVEN WIECHMAN in the 2nd inning. Meanwhile,
opposing shortstop JESSICA ALDERSON batted 2-for-2,
with a double and three RBI for West Hills.
"At least Mount Miguel had a good attitude and
looked like they were having fun," Wolf Pack coach
MIKE APPLEBAUM said about the winless Matadors. "They
seemed to be enjoying the experience."
The victory, coupled by losses by Steele Canyon and
Helix, left the undefeated Wolf Pack alone in first
place in the conference tournament standings at 3-0.
West Hills (5-2-1 overall) has now won four straight
contests.
MIRA MESA 16, HELIX 4 Following an 8-0
setback to top-ranked Bonita Vista, the Marauders bounced
back by again posting double digits on a Grossmont Hills
League opponent to stay unbeaten in Grossmont Conference
Tournament action Thursday (Mar. 31) in La Mesa.
And, once again, Mira Mesa did most of its damage on
the second and third time through the batting order.
Included was a 2-run homer by senior captain Joanna
Asenjo in the 4th inning to mount a 3-0 lead which eventually
reached 5-1.
In the 5th, Helix responded with three markers to make
it a contest.
Cousins SYDNI TOILOLO and PRECIOUS SEETIA-NOA registered
consecutive one-out doubles for the first run. RAEISHA
CARTER was hit by a pitch, with both runners moving
into scoring position on an illegal pitch, then scoring
on a two-out single by freshman DESIRAE BORDINE.
However, Mira Mesa shortstop Katiyana Mauga answered
with a 3-run homer in the 6th, as the Marauders scored
five times in the 6th, then six more in the 7th, to
make it a runaway. It's a pattern Mira Mesa has duplicated
numerous times since veteran coach Brad Griffith returned
for a third tour coaching the team this season.
The other Highlanders run came on a bases-loaded basehit
by KAI PENN, allowing pinchrunner CARLY ACEVES to score
in the 4th.

GROSSMONT 22, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 (5 inn.)
The Foothillers erupted for 12 runs in the 2nd inning
to mount a 14-0 lead in a run-rule win over the host
Braves.
Shortstop AUBRIE MAY pumped a 3-run homer in the 2nd
inning, then KAITLIN NICKS pounded a 2-run shot in the
5th, with both shots going to left field.
RACHEL STALFORD pitched no-hit ball in her short stint
in the circle, with DANIELLE McMILLAN going the final
three frames for her first varsity save.
ECVHS scored both of its runs in the 4th, when DIANE
FRIAS, CHELSEA BALL and JESSICA SNOW gained consecutive
basehits to load the bases, with Frias and Ball coming
home on a sharp single to centerfield by NOELLE PONTIUS.
Ball extended her hitting streak to an East County
best 13 straight ballgames.
SAN MARCOS 8, PATRICK HENRY 0 (5 inn.)
Missing several key components, the Patriots were blanked
on just one hit in Thursday's (Mar. 31) Falcon Fiesta
pool play contest in San Carlos.
Christina Clermont tossed the shutout for the Knights,
utilizing her riseball to thwart the hosts by striking
out 10 batters. The lone hit was a 3rd-inning, bunt
single by Henrys CARLY MITCHELL.

EL CAJON (3-31-11) In the team's finest outing
of the season, Grossmont High pitcher RACHEL STALFORD
tossed a 4-hit shutout while the defense converted several
key plays in Wednesday's (Mar. 30) Falcon Fiesta victory
over visiting Rancho Buena Vista, 3-0.
Stalford struck out five batters and walked just one,
then was aided by a pair of double plays.
"It was the first time we put everything together
this season," said Hillers coach JERRY LERUD. "Rachel
pitched great, but our offense and defense was just
as solid."
In the 4th, centerfielder AMANDA PORTER hauled in a
fly ball, then fired a strike to catcher SARAH NICKS
for the out at the plate to keep Stalford's shutout
bid intact. Then in the 6th, Nicks made a grab on a
short pop-up, then drilled the ball to second baseman
HAYLEY KASDEN, who was covering first base on bunt coverage.
In addition, Nicks threw out a runner attempting to
steal second base in the 2nd.
Meanwhile, the Hillers pulled some surprises when they
bunted.
Following a Porter single to lead off the 1st, she
took two bases on a sacrifice bunt by MOLLY SIMPSON.
Kasden then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring
home Porter for a 1-0 lead.
An inning later, Nicks singled, followed by a double
by sister SARAH NICKS to place two runners in scoring
position. MEGAN CRISCI then lifted another sac-fly to
left, then HEATHER DEMENT singled to left for a 3-0
cushion.
EL CAPITAN 4, SERRA 0 It was the "other"
Vaqueros underclassman who held the host Lady Q's in
check, as freshman KATIE CARMICHAEL tossed a 3-hit shutout
in Wednesday's (Mar. 30) contest in Tierrasanta.
Carmichael struck out seven Conquistadors without issuing
a walk in a big bounce-back outing.
"We started Katie against Point Loma a couple
of weeks ago, but she didn't get through the second
inning," El Cap coach JOE COTA recalled. "But
this was a great effort -- I'm happy for her."
The strong effort was needed because the Vaqueros didn't
break open the ballgame until scoring three times in
the 7th to expand a 1-0 advantage.
The early run came in the 2nd when flex player CASSI
BATTAGLIA doubled to left-center, followed by an RBI
single by third baseman NICOLE BALINGER, also to left-center.
In the 7th, DELANIE GOURLEY doubled in MARISA CUEVAS
(walk), followed by a walk to JENNA PORTER. Catcher
CINDY GONZALEZ followed with an RBI single, with Porter
later scoring on an error.
Serra's last chance saw the lead batter single and
steal second base. However, Carmichael retired the next
three Lady Q-Dawg batters to gain the victory.
SANTANA 11, RAMONA 4 The Sultans erupted
for five runs in the 1st inning, then AMANDA GRABLE
powered a 3-run homer in the 3rd to mount a 9-3 lead
to gain the victory on Wednesday's (Mar. 30) trip up
the mountain.
It was a 4 RBI outing for Grable, the Santana catcher,
also adding a run-scoring double to post a 1-0 lead
just two batters into the ballgame.
KAYTI GRABLE knocked in her sister with a basehit,
with EMILY SCHISLER driving in a run on a sacrifice
fly which was dropped, then the Sultans added another
RBI single by KENDRA KUPER.
After Ramona moved to within 6-3 entering the 3rd,
Amanda Grablea homer to center also brought home
TARA GRENNEN and ARIEL RASMUSSON. An inning later in
the 4th, MALLORY BOYD delivered a 2-run single to push
Santana into double digits.
Kuper also pitched the final 5 2/3 innings to collect
her first win of the season. She struck out two without
issuing a walk.
MT. CARMEL 6, VALHALLA 2 In a game which
many players thought would be cancelled when it was
discovered that no umpires were assigned to work the
contest, the 40-minute delay proved problematic for
both pitchers, but Sundevils hurler Bree Williams regained
form more quickly to take Wednesday's (Mar. 30) non-league
win at Leto Field.
Williams issued a season-poor six walks, but compared
to nine free passes issued by the Norsemen, the senior
posted the better effort for the four-time defending
SDCIF Division II titlists.
"I was actually told the game was cancelled and
I was packing up my things," said Williams, who
will pitch for Academy of Art University in San Francisco
next season. "Then five minutes later, the team
was told the game was on, so I had to warm-up all over
again."
Valhalla pitcher TORREY ROOK wouldn't offer any excuses,
yet walked the first four Mt. Carmel batters to start
the game as the Sundevils took a 2-0 lead. But when
MADISON LABSHERE and Rook drove in runs in the bottom
of the 1st, everything was even once again at 2-all.
"I was already warmed-up, so the delay wasn't
a reason," said Rook, who will pitch crosstown
from Williams for San Francisco State next spring. "We
just need to start pulling everything together and string
some hits together."
Valhalla (2-6) finished with just four hits off Williams.
For Mt. Carmel (7-3), first baseman Gina Calo busted
open the game with a 2-run double in the 4th, giving
her a 3-RBI outing. Sundevils shortstop Nina Villanueva
batted 2-for-3 and scored twice.

rally falls short to Carlsbad

SAN CARLOS (3-30-11) The SDCIF playoffs
are still more than six weeks away, but Tuesday's
(Mar. 29) key match-up between teams which got
off to above-average starts could determine which
side gains a first-round home game.
Give that advantage to Carlsbad, which rode
the arm of senior pitcher Katie Wilkinson to down
host Patrick Henry, 5-2, in a Falcon Fiesta pool
play contest.
Wilkinson, who is ticketed to replace graduating
NAIA All-America pitcher BRENNA SANDBERG (West
Hills) at Cal State San Marcos next season, got
out of one rough inning to lift the Lancers' record
to 11-4.
"We're just focusing and working hard,"
said Wilkinson, who recorded 13 of the final 15
outs on grounders. "We just need to improve
our attitude so we can beat teams like La Costa
Canyon to win our league."
Carlsbad tallied three runs in the 4th inning,
eventually mounting a 5-0 lead before the Patriots
answered in the 6th.
LEXEE HUTCHENS ended the shutout bid by scoring
on a sharp single to right by ALEXANDRA MOOTRY,
who later scored on a KELLY JERTBERG basehit.
But with two runners on base and the potential
game-tying run at the plate, Wilkinson escaped
with a strikeout, then retired Henry in order
in the 7th.

West Hills claims city championship
© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (3-30-11) In the second incarnation of
the City of Santee Championship, West Hills rallied
from an early 3-1 deficit by collecting 15 of their
17 hits over the final four innings to subdue east-side
rival Santana in Grossmont Conference Tournament action
held Tuesday (Mar. 29) at Sportsplex USA.
West Hills pitcher NOELLE JOHNSON overcame three early
runs by striking out 10 Sultans to allow her teammates
to come back, capped by the first varsity homer by Wolf
Pack second baseman VANESSA McHUGH.
Taking advantage of a distorted defensive alignment
which saw Santana bring its right fielder to a rover-type
spot near the infield, McHugh turned on a fastball and
whistled a drive past the first baseman into the right-field
corner.
"All of our left-handed hitters are slap hitters
except me," noted McHugh. "So I was able
to turn on the ball."
Since the fields at Sportsplex USA are tailored to
slow-pitch softball, the outfield fence is 300 feet
away rather than the traditional 200-220 feet. And without
a temporary outfield fence, the ball rolled and rolled.
"I lost track of the ball because I was looking
into the sun," added McHugh. "So when I picked-up
my third-base coach and he kept pumping his arm hard,
I thought it would be a close play at home."
Instead, the ball remained in the outfield before McHugh
crossed the plate to cap her perfect day the plate.
The Vanguard University bound senior went 2-for-2 and
walked three times.
"When Vanessa saw me telling her to keep going,
there was a big smile on her face," said head coach
MICHAEL APPLEBAUM. "I don't think she believed
she was about to homer."
Johnson was matched by teammate TAYLOR HALLAHAN by
going 3-for-5 at the plate. Meanwhile, left-fielder
HEATHER VALLES went 3-for-4, including the go-ahead
hit with the bases loaded in the 5th, breaking a 3-all
contest with a single to score both JESSICA ALDERSON
and SAVANNA BAGGETT.
Early on, tied at 1-1, Santana regained the lead when
AMBER SCHISLER stroked a 2-run homer down the left-field
line in the 3rd inning, as the ball sailed over the
defender.
Santana catcher KAYTI GRABLE went 2-for-3 and scored
once, while KATHERINE PETTY recorded her first varsity
basehit. The other Sultans runs were registered on basehits
by KENDRA KUPER in the 2nd, then ARIEL RASMUSSON in
the 7th.
Former Santee mayor (and current city councilmember)
JACK DALE presented a new perpetual trophy for the series
between the intra-city rivals.
STEELE CANYON 2, EL CAPITAN 0 Among six
pitching arms to select from, the Cougars may have finally
found a No. 1 starter in GRACE KRAMER, who tossed a 2-hit
shutout to out-duel Vaqueros' standout DELANIE GOURLEY.
"She's my sophomore stud," said Steele Canyon
coach JULIE BOHE. "Grace did a fantastic job."
While Kramer stopped El Capitan with five strikeouts
in the Grossmont Conference Tournament contest, the
Cougars may have discovered a young bat to complement
Kramer.
Sophomore first baseman KALI SCHWARTZ drove in both
of the game's runs with a sharp, 2-run single to centerfield
in the 4th.
The rally started on a GABRIELLE BEASLEY single, a
sacrifice bunt by Kramer, then MICHELLE BEASLEY singled
and stole second base to place both sisters into scoring
position to set-up Schwartz.
Kramer was also aided by several solid defensive stops,
something "we've been focusing on quite a bit,"
added Bohe.
Included were grabs of liners by KAYLIE AZEVEDO and
Schwartz, but the ballgame's biggest play would cap
the victory.
El Capitan loaded the bases with two outs in the 7th,
with Gourley, the team's top hitter at the plate. However,
on a 1-0 pitch, Cougars catcher MOLLY HUTCHISON ended
the game by picking off the runner at third base by
firing a strike to COURTNEY JOHNSON for the tagout.

with her bat.
Triolo jump-started the offense with an RBI triple
in the 1st inning, driving in TARIN MARKS, who scored
twice. Triolo also belted a double in a 2-3 outing.
Eagles senior outfielder SAVANNAH BROOKS posted a sacrifice
fly to bring home DESIREE MEJIA in the 2nd, then Mejia
singled home Marks in the 3rd for a 3-0 advantage.
Granite Hills added a pair of unearned runs in the
7th on a pair of passed balls in winning for the third
time in four outings.

MIRA MESA 10, VALHALLA 4 Just whose idea
was it to allow the Marauders to participate in the
Grossmont Conference Tournament? The question could
be asked after Mira Mesa clocked the visiting Norsemen
for its third straight thumping of a Grossmont Hills
League representative.
Freshman Quirisa Mauga belted a 2-run, go-ahead triple
in the 1st inning, off-setting a quick 2-0 Valhalla
lead, the Marauders pitchers Lani Vanta and Kasey Campbell
to limit Valhalla to just six basehits.
The Norsemen accepted a pair of gift runs early on.
Following consecutive walks to DIONNA SMITH and KYLA
CLAPHAM, MADISON LABSHERE reached on an error to score
Smith, then NAOMI TELLEZ grounded to the right side
for another run.
Mira Mesa then took control with a trio of multiple-run
innings.
The only other Norsemen offense came in the 3rd, courtesy
of a pair of hard hit balls.
Labshere led off with a double off the fence in centerfield,
then Tellez lined a home run to nearly an identical
spot, but over the barrier.
Mira Mesa is 3-0 in the pool of Grossmont Valley League
schools, with only Santana capable to catch them for
a berth in the championship contest.

In a career outing, Highlanders senior centerfielder
CLAUDETTE SMITH hit for the cycle and drove in seven
runs, powering the Scotties past the host Braves in
Tuesday's (Mar. 29) Grossmont Conference Tournament
contest.
Following a 1st-inning basehit, Smith blasted a 3-run
homer to centerfield in the 2nd, scoring both RAEISHA
CARTER and CASSIE EWERT. An inning later, Smith pumped
a bases-loaded triple, bringing home Carter, Ewert and
DESIRAE BODINE.
Needing a double for the cycle, Smith "only"
singled in the 5th, but gained another opportunity when
Helix fell a run short of invoking the run rule by leading
12-3 to force another inning.
In the 6th, Smith recorded her double, as Carter scored
for a third time on Smith hits. Carter went 3-for-3
with a pair of walks, while SYDNI TOILOLO batted 3-for-4.
For El Cajon Valley, CHELSEA BALL extended her East
County best hitting streak to 12 contests with a pair
of singles, while EVELYN GLAUDE went 2-for-3, including
an RBI double to plate MERLINDA LOPEZ in the 5th to
prevent the run rule for at least one additional inning.
The Braves also scored twice in the 1st, including
a 2-run single to score KAMY ROJAS and Glaude.

GROSSMONT 14, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 (5 inn.)
KAITLYN NICKS, because of the run rule, never got the
at-bat necessary to complete the cycle, yet still posted
impressive numbers in the Foothillers' romp over the
Matadors.
Nicks drilled a 2-run triple in the 1st inning as part
of a 3-RBI performance, then added a double, single
and a walk in Tuesday's (Mar. 29) Grossmont Conference
Tournament affair. Nicks' effort was enough to allow
sophomore DANI McMILLAN to collect her first varsity
pitching victory in spinning a 4-hitter while striking
out five batters.
Also collecting two hits each for Grossmont were sophomore
left fielder MOLLY SIMPSON (2 RBI, 2 runs), AMANDA PORTER
(2 runs), TAYLOR WATERS (2 RBI) and HEATHER DEMENT.

Scotties fiesta with 8-run outburst
© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (3-29-11) When you're a coach, sooner
is always better than later. But you will always take
either.
"After being out of school for 2 1/2 weeks, I
could see why we were lethargic," said Helix head
coach KELLIE NELSON. "But when we did get going,
we really kicked it into gear."
In a contest seemingly destined for extra innings,
instead the Highlanders erupted for 8 runs in the 6th
inning, igniting the run rule in a 9-1, 6-inning decision
over visiting Morse in Monday's (Mar. 28) Falcon Fiesta
contest.
SAVANNAH McCULLY and KEANA NAKATA combined on a 1-hitter
for the Scotties, but a 1st-inning run without the aid
of a basehit kept the Tigers in the game until Helix
finally returned to form.
After CLAUDETTE SMITH reached on a bunt and later tied
the game in the 3rd, the Highlanders gained 8 runs (5
earned) in their single greatest inning of the season.

Helix loaded the bases when SAMANTHA CUNNINGHAM reached
on an error, RAEISHA CARTER bunted for a basehit, then
DESIRAE BORDINE registered a basehit.
CASSIE EWERT followed with a basehit for a 2-1 lead,
then the fire drill began. Smith lifted a fly ball to
center field for a sacrifice fly and an RBI, but when
the ball was dropped, three runs would come around to
score.
Helix later received RBI hits from CHANELLE WARD, SYDNI
TOILOLO and Cunningham, then Carter capped the ballgame
with a run-scoring double.
Nakata, who pitched two perfect innings of relief,
gained the victory. She struck out two of the six batters
she faced.
The lone Morse hit was a single by Allana Hille in
the 2nd.
WEST HILLS 23, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 (5 inn.)

Meanwhile, MELISSA EGGLESTON and JAMIE BUSH combined
on the shutout. Based on rules enacted last season,
Eggleston collected the victory under run-rule conditions
after going the first two frames, while Bush picked
up a 3-inning save.
West Hills received three RBI in the 1st by freshman CORTNEY HORNE on a bases-clearing double to right field.
For El Cajon Valley, junior CHELSEA BALL extended
her season-long hitting streak to 11 consecutive games
with a single in the 1st. The other Braves hits
were consecutive 5th-inning singles by JESSICA SNOW
and AISSA THOMAS.
In addition, ECVHS converted the defensive stop of
the game when second baseman EVELYN GLAUDE laid out
to knock down a hot grounder ticketed for center field,
recovering in time to make the play at first base in
the 4th.
RANCHO BERNARDO 3, VALHALLA 1 The Broncos'
Madison Jones led off the game with a home run to left
field, then later scored another run in Monday's (Mar.

Jones crushed a changeup for the 1-0 lead, however,
the Norsemen were able to immediately tie the game off
Broncos pitcher Sara White.
Madison Labshere gained the first of consecutive walks,
moved to third base on a hit batter to load the bases,
then scored on a wild pitch. After that, White settled
down in tossing a 1-hitter.
Rancho Bernardo snapped the tie with two runs after
two were out in the 6th.
Erin Madrid walked, Jones singled through the left
side, and when the throw missed the cutoff, both runners
moved into scoring position. The next batter then reached
on a throwing error, allowing the tie-breaking runs
(both unearned) to score.
White struck out 10 batters to top Norsemen pitcher
TORREY ROOK, who also allowed just a single earned run.
POWAY 10, GRANITE HILLS 1 (5 inn.) In
a non-league affair held in North County, the Eagles
managed just a lone run when BROOKLYN SCHWEN singled,
then circled the bases on a double by shortstop KIMMY
TRIOLO in the 2nd inning.
Schwen batted 2-for-3 with a triple for Granite Hills.

Eagles victory is a 'hit'

EL CAJON (3-27-11) In a week of finding a way
to manufacture just enough runs to win, no one on Granite
Hills High was complaining after winning in ugly fashion.
Batting with the bases loaded in the bottom of the
7th inning, freshman RAE SHEW was struck by a pitch
to force in a run, the lone marker in the Eagles' 1-0
decision over Grossmont Hills League rival Grossmont
in Saturday's (Mar. 26) Falcon Fiesta pool play contest.
The run made a winner of Granite Hills pitcher DESIREE
MEJIA, who tossed a 5-hit shutout to stop the Foothillers.
Following 6-plus innings of scoreless action against
Grossmont pitcher RACHEL STALFORD, Granite Hills received
a leadoff double by TARIN MARKS to open the 7th.
Sophomore KIMMY TRIOLO followed with a basehit, so
Mejia was walked to load the bases with no one out.
However, Stalford then hit Shew, who both gained an
RBI and kept Granite Hills in contention for a berth
in the tournament's championship flight if they can
win-out throughout the balance of its pool-play schedule.
EL CAPITAN 4, CLAIREMONT 1 (6 inn.) In
a Hilltop Tournament contest played at Olympian High,
Vaqueros pitcher DELANIE GOURLEY posted 14 strikeouts
and tossed a 3-hitter at the Chieftains in the first
of the team's two pool play contests Saturday (Mar.
26).
The triumph gave El Cap a 3-0 record in the event,
including last Wednesday's forfeit win from Mar Vista
when everyone showed up including cameras from a
certain website and a local television station except
the visiting Mariners.
Vaqueros catcher CINDY GONZALEZ batted 2-for-3, including
a 2-run triple in the 5th inning, later scoring on a
double by freshman shortstop KATIE CARMICHAEL.
EL CAPITAN 2, EASTLAKE 1 (6 inn.) In
the Vaqueros' second Hilltop Tournament pool play game
on Saturday (Mar. 26), it was a near perfect replay
for pitcher DELANIE GOURLEY. The left-hander again struck
out 14 and yielded just one run, this time throwing
a 1-hitter against the Titans.
Eastlake's one hit was transformed into a run in the
4th inning, but El Capitan immediately answered to secure
the lead in the 5th.
MARISA QUIVAS opened with a walk, moved to second base
on a Gourley grounder to the right side, then second
baseman JENNA PORTER walked. With two outs, CINDY GONZALEZ,
a junior, struck for her second triple on the day, scoring
both Quivas and Porter to grab the lead for keeps.
BONITA VISTA 13, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 (5 inn.)
The Braves avoided getting shutout with a pair
of runs in the 5th against the top-ranked and undefeated
Barons in a Hilltop Tournament contest played at Olympian
High.
ECVHS saw the first three batters reach to load the
bases, as MERLINDA LOPEZ singled, NOELLE PONTIUS walked,
then RACHEL SHADDIX was hit by a pitch.
KAMY ROJAS followed by also getting struck by a pitch
for an RBI, followed by a run-scoring single to centerfield
by EVELYN GLAUDE.
OLYMPIAN 11, EL CAJON VALLEY 3 (5 inn.)
The host Eagles took advantage of seven Braves errors
to win by run-rule in Saturday's (Mar. 26) Hilltop Tournament
pool play ballgame.
ECVHS took the initial lead in the 1st inning on consecutive
basehits by EVELYN GLAUDE (single to center), CHELSEA
BALL (infield hit) and DIANE FRIAS (basehit to right-center).

Olympian then registered 11 runs, yet the Braves had
the final say with two runs in the 5th.
AISSA THOMAS dented the fence in centerfield with a
booming, 2-out double, scoring on a KAMY ROJAS double
to left-center field. EYELYN GLAUDE, a junior outfielder
who went 3-for-5 on the day, then singled to left-center
to bring home Rojas.

Vincent's drive lifts Eagles
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (3-25-11) The bats of Granite Hills
High are slowly coming to life.
On Thursday (Mar. 24), the Eagles produced just enough
runs to gain a narrow 3-2 decision over Madison Avenue
rival El Cajon Valley in Grossmont Conference Tournament
action.
FELICIA VINCENT capped a 3-run outburst in the 2nd
inning by driving in a pair with a single, then the
Eagles hung on when the Braves bats made some
noise over the final four innings.
The rally started quietly with consecutive basehits
by BROOKLYN SCHWEN and KIMMY TRIOLO, followed by back-to-back
walks to ALLIE CIMMARRUSTI and SAVANNAH BROOKS for the
first run.
Vincent, a sophomore, followed with a drive to left
field for a 3-0 margin before the Braves battled back
in seeking their first win over Granite Hills since
2004 (the ballclubs did not meet last season).
Junior right fielder MONICA DUGGAN started both ECVHS
rallies in a 2-for-3 outing.
In the 4th, Duggan singled, then took third base on
a bashit by JESSICA SNOW. But when the throw to third
sailed out of bounds, Duggan was awarded home.
Two innings later, Duggan again singled, eventually
scoring when NOELLE PONTIUS dropped a flare into centerfield
for an RBI basehit.
Duggan's second run could well have tied the contest
if a close play in the 5th had gone the other way.
Braves leadoff batter KAMY ROJAS walked, then was advanced
to second base. CHELSEA BALL followed with an infield
single, with Rojas sent home in the hope of catching
the Eagles napping.
However, Granite Hills first baseman NICOLE OBNEY fired
a strike to catcher KRISTINA LAHITTE, with the umpire
ruling the sweep tag clipped Rojas before she touched
the plate.
The Braves out-hit the Eagles, 5-4.
MIRA MESA 9, GROSSMONT 1 The Marauders,
the annual guest entrant to the Grossmont Conference
Tournament, received a 3-run homer from junior right-fielder
Tani Leasau in the 3rd inning to bomb the Foothillers.
It was Mira Mesa's second consecutive blowout victory
over a ballclub from the Grossmont Hills League.
The Hillers' lone run came in the 4th. After RACHEL
STALFORD reached on a fielder's choice, courtesy runner
AMANDA PORTER scored from first base on a double to
deep left by KAITLYN NICKS.
Falcons nip Santana in extras
© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (3-24-11) In a battle between two ballclubs
that could just as easily rank among the county's Top
10 teams rather than listed among the honorable mention,
it was Scripps Ranch which produced one additional key
play at the end, squeezing out a 3-2 victory in 9 innings
over Santana in Wednesday's (Mar. 23) featured East
County contest.
The Falcons' Emily Gusse, who ranks among the premiere
shortstops in the San Diego Section, lifted a tiebreaker
sacrifice fly to plate Mickey Wanstedt with the winning
run in a ballgame which featured several lead changes.
"We knew it was going to be a great game,"
said Gusse. "I was able to get the ball in the
air to center field, where others might have tried to
go for the big hit."
Intelligent play by the senior may explain why she's
ticketed to attend Harvard, which features former Valhalla
High and 3-time NPF professional All-Star CARRI LETO
MARTIN as an assistant coach.
Following five innings of scoreless play, Scripps Ranch
grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 6th, only to get countered
when the Sultans' CAITLIN ARNDT blasted a 2-run homer.
Her first career longball also brought in EMILY SCHISLER,
who went 4-for-4 then was intentionally walked in the
8th.
Arndt also kept Santana in the game with her arm.
The Falcons answered Arndt's homer when Marisa Datko
belted a single with a pair of runners in scoring position.
The runner on third easily scored to tie the contest,
but Arndt fired the ball to second baseman TAYLOR BARRY,
who drilled the relay to catcher AMANDA GRABLE to cut
down Michaela Long with the potential go-ahead run at
the plate.
Taylor Curran earned the pitching win for Scripps Ranch,
despite allowing 12 hits, to nip Amber Schisler, who
yielded just seven hits.
"We scratched and fought for the win, but we need
to come through to win big games like this," noted
Emily Schisler, the Santana center fielder, who looks
to attend either Oregon State, UC Santa Cruz or SDSU.
"And now we play Steele Canyon next, which beat
us at the Cougar Classic, so we need to come out strong."
POWAY 11, HELIX 3 One day after collecting
their first triumph of the season, the Highlanders fell
on the road to one of the top ballclubs in the county
in Wednesday's (Mar. 23) Falcon Fiesta encounter.
Helix (1-5-1) scored all of its runs in the 3rd inning.
SAM CUNNINGHAM blasted a leadoff double to right-center
field, then advanced to third base on a deep fly ball
by CLAUDETTE SMITH.
KEANA NAKATA then singled home Cunningham, with courtesy
runner KAI PENN moving into scoring position on a passed
ball. PRECIOUS NOA singled and stole second base to
place runners on second and third, with both scoring
when Noa's cousin, SYNDI TOILOLO, belted a double to
right-center field.
For Poway (7-2), Angela Randazzo slugged a 3-run double
when the Titans scored six times in the 1st inning,
while Haley Steele batted 3-for-4 with two runs and
an RBI.
ESCONDIDO 12, PATRICK HENRY 4 The torrid
hitting of Patriots senior ALEXANDRA MOOTRY continued
Wednesday (Mar. 23) despite falling to the host Cougars
in Falcon Fiesta play.
Mootry collected three RBI with a run-scoring single
in the 4th inning, then a two-run double in the 6th
for Patrick Henry (4-5).
However, Mootry was up-staged by Escondido's Paige
Falconieri, who hit a pair of home runs, including a
grand slam in the 6th to evoke the run rule in a 6 RBI
performance.
In addition, Hawai'i bound left-hander Kayla Wartner
also posted a pair of doubles for Escondido (6-2).
EASTLAKE 9, CHRISTIAN 8 The Patriots
were one out away from a nice non-league victory on
the road, but the final four Titans hitters all collected
hits to produce three runs to send Christian to a shocking
setback.
A key change to the Pats lineup produced immediate
results when sophomore ANAYA TOBIASON was elevated from
the bottom of the card to the No. 5 slot. The centerfielder
responded with 2-run doubles in both the 1st and 3rd
innings in a 4 RBI performance.
Meanwhile, pitcher MONIQUE ELLIOTT posted her fifth
multiple hit outing in her last six contests. The senior
2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base to raise
her average to .478. Catcher MARY GRABOWSKI also garnered
two hits and scored twice.

Sultans
accept gift victory
© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (3-23-11) A by-product of fielding
a young ballclub is the ability to close out ballgames.
Or in this case, unable to close as a fourth East
County school gave away a 7th-inning lead due
to a rash of errors or mental mistakes.

Valhalla High became the latest victim to hand
a gift victory to an opponent, as Santana parlayed
a pair of errors into three runs (two unearned)
without registering an out to shock the guest
Norsemen, 6-5, in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) Grossmont
Conference Tournament opener.
The Sultans, who now own East County's best record
at 6-2, were about to get saddled with a loss
before a ground ball by KENDRA KUPER was thrown
away, allowing TARA GRENNEN and EMILY SCHISLER
to score the tying and winning runs to complete
a comeback from deficits of 4-2 and 5-3.
AMBER SCHISLER, who collected the pitching victory,
opened the 7th with a double to left-center field,
but was forced to remain at second on a grounder
to the left side by Grennen, but the ball was
booted.
Emily Schisler reached on an infield single to
load the bases, then CAITLIN ARNDT's flare to
right for a basehit trimmed the margin to 5-4.
On Kuper's grounder, the throw went to the plate
with no one out, but the defense couldn't complete
the play.
Santana jumped to a quick start when AMANDA GRABLE
tagged a changeup for a 2-run homer to left-center
in the 1st. The North Dakota State bound Grable
later added a run-scoring single in the 6th to
complete a three RBI outing.
In between, Valhalla took the lead on a 4-run
rally in the 5th, capped by a 2-run homer by MADISON
LABSHERE. The outburst started when DIONNA SMITH's
line single scored CANDICE STAMPER (walk), with
Smith coming home with the tying run on a KYLA
CLAPHAM drive to left-center.
In the 6th, Santana got a run back on Kuper's
double to the fence in center, followed by Grable's
second hit. But the Norsemen took the run back
in the 7th when Smith pounded an identical double,
then scored on a single to right by Labshere,
giving her three RBI on the afternoon.

'Snowflakes' aid Foothillers' victory

LAKESIDE (3-23-11) A day following the rain,
was it actually snowing Tuesday (Mar. 22) on the southern
edge of Eucalyptus Hills?
"It was the chalk flying everywhere," noted
Grossmont High softball coach JERRY LERUD. "It
was the one time I was so glad the foul lines weren't
painted."
The pyrotechnics of chalk came courtesy of sophomore
MEGAN CRISCI, who belted a 7th-inning double down the
left field line to bring home CAITLIN NICKS with the
game's only run in a 1-0 decision over host El Capitan
in a Grossmont Conference Tournament opener.
With more and more fields sporting grass in the outfield,
both lines are marked with white paint instead of the
more expensive chalk. However, since El Capitan utilizes
an all-dirt surface, 200 feet of chalk mark the line
from home plate to the foul poles.
"And I couldn't have been happier," added
the coach. "There was no doubt about the call from
the umpire once the ball landed on the chalk."
Crisci, the Hillers' first baseman, delivered Nicks
from third base after the senior reached on a basehit
to left-center field, then advanced on a wild pitch
and a passed ball.
Grossmont pitcher RACHEL STALFORD then set the Vaqueros
down in order in the bottom of the 7th, gaining two
shallow fly balls, then logged her eighth strikeout
to polish off her 2-hit shutout in out-dueling Vaqueros
pitcher DELANIE GOURLEY.
The only hits off Stalford were two-out doubles by
NICOLE BALINGER in the 1st, then Gourley in the 6th.
Both sailed to deep center field.
Gourley allowed seven hits, although several of the
balls were allowed to drop. She finished with 14 strikeouts,
including whiffs to strand Grossmont runners at third
base in the 2nd and 4th innings.
"It's tough to put a full lineup together against
Delanie," added Lerud. "She's really difficult
to hit."
AMANDA PORTER registered three of Grossmont's seven
basehits.
HELIX 1, MONTE VISTA 0 The pressure is
finally off the Highlanders after SUZANNE McCULLY and
KEANA NAKATA combined to toss a 5-hit shutout of visiting
Monte Vista in Tuesday's (Mar. 22) Grossmont Conference
Tournament opener.
"Yup, finally is right, but I'm not going to complain,"
said Scotties coach KELLIE NELSON. "We played a
really good game and deserved to win, so this will really
help our confidence."
McCully allowed just five hits in as many innings to
collect the victory as Helix snapped a scoreless contest
with a run in the 4th inning. Nakata, who battled injuries
throughout her freshman season in 2010, then threw no-hit
ball at the Monarchs in her two innings to garner the
save.
The run wasn't very dramatic, but when you open the
season at 0-4-1, you'll take it when it leads to a victory.
Following a pair of basehits by SEETIA NOA and Nakata,
RAEISHA CARTER walked to load the bases, then freshman
DESIRAE BORDINE also walked to force home the run.
STEELE CANYON 27, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 (5 inn.)
Tied at 1-1 following both teams' first at-bats, rumor
is Cougars coach JULIE BOHE might have held a brief
"discussion" with her team about their lackluster
play.
The result was the most runs by an East County ballclub
since Steele Canyon bounced Monte Vista, 26-0, on May
8, 2007, en route to capturing the SDCIF championship.
The Cougars played an array of underclassmen and junior
varsity call-ups, including CHELSEY HARMENSON, who registered
two doubles among her three hits, and KAYLIE AZEVEDO,
who had a pair of basehits.
Among the regulars, catcher MOLLY HUTCHISON recorded
four of the Cougars' 26 hits, while ASHLEY BARANOW,
GRACE KRAMER and BRITTANY HOPKINS had three hits each,
as Steele Canyon collected 11 runs in the 4th inning.
Hopkins, a junior, also tossed a complete-game 3-hitter
in the run-rule shortened, 5-inning ballgame of Grossmont
Conference Tournament play.
Wednesday Update: The
Eagles say they didn't report because it was NOT
an official ballgame. Seems like no umpires showed
up, so Mira Mesa parents volunteered to umpire,
thus making it a scrimmage (via our way of reading
CIF rules). STAY TUNED... someone's going to protest. |
MIRA MESA 15, GRANITE HILLS 1 It was
revenge time for the Marauders, annual guest entrants
in the Grossmont Conference Tournament, who advanced
to the 2009 tournament championship contest before falling
to the Eagles, 3-1.
No information was reported by Granite Hills.

SPRING VALLEY (3-22-11) While all of Monday's
(Mar. 21) East County softball action was rained out,
there was still off-the-field news. Monte Vista High
placed an online notice that the Monarchs forfeited
their season-opening doubleheader to Calexico. No reason
was listed, nevertheless, the team's record dropped
from an East County best 6-2 down to 4-4.

Braves vanquish Vikings to move above .500
© East County Sports.com
CLAIREMONT MESA (3-20-11) While every member
school in the Grossmont Hills League is stumbling with
a record at .500 or below, the surprising Grossmont
Valley League boasts three ballclubs with winning records.
The most unexpected of the trio is El Cajon Valley, which moved to 4-3 overall after blasting La Jolla, 15-3, in Saturday's (Mar. 19) consolation round of
the Friar Classic.
Junior left fielder CHELSEA BALL powered the Braves
with a pair of early home runs. Ball tagged a 2-run
blast in the 1st, then a 3-run shot an inning later
both to straightaway center field in posting 5
RBI against the Vikings.
First baseman DIANE FRIAS aided the effort by going
3-for-3 and scoring three times to make a winner of
starting pitcher MIRANDA MULLENS. Tossing the final
two innings was GINA GARCIA, who earned a save in the
5-inning, run-rule triumph.
PATRICK HENRY 17-12, OTAY RANCH 6-11
Patriots first baseman ALEXANDRA MOOTRY posted a career
day in a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Mustangs.
Slugging home runs in both contests, Mootry finished
the day with 7 RBI.
In game one, Mootry drove in five runs with a triple
and a homer, going 3-for-4. She also scored four times.
Third baseman JESSICA PING also knocked in five runs
with a single, double and a homer.
Meanwhile, Otay Ranch leadoff batter Carlee Wood was
equally unstoppable, going 3-for-3 with a homer and
scoring twice.
The second game saw Mootry belt a 2-run homer in the
3rd. In addition, right fielder JENNIFER SCHUFF batted
3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored.
Wood went 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring three times
for Otay Ranch.
With the sweep, Patrick Henry moved to 4-4 overall.
DEL NORTE 9, CHRISTIAN 5 The powers-that-be
operating the Friar Classic apparently changed the tie-breaker
rules to determine the tournament finalists, leaving
both of these teams out of Saturday's (Mar. 19) championship
round.
Instead, these ballclubs played a consolation contest,
with the Nighthawks storming back from a 5-1 deficit
through five innings to defeat the Patriots in a contest
held at Madison.
Christian mounted an early lead on consecutive RBI
singles by JEANNIE VEST and MONIQUE ELLIOTT in the 2nd,
then Elliott walked with the bases loaded in the 3rd.
Elliott later posted a run-scoring single in the 5th,
capping a 3-for-4, 3 RBI performance.
TORREY PINES 14, HELIX 3 Although the
Falcons' run as the top-ranked team in the county will
end, Torrey Pines closed the week on fire by taking
the Highlanders' annual night game and barbecue in a
6-inning, run-rule decision in Falcon Fiesta play Saturday
(Mar. 19).
Helix scored its runs on a squeeze bunt by DESIRAE
BORDINE, bringing home outfielder CLAUDETTE SMITH (triple),
followed by a passed ball to plate shortstop CHANELLE
WARD.
In the 6th, KAI PENN walked, stole two bases, then
came in on a fielder's choice.

The week of the rebound
© East County Sports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO (3-19-11) For fastpitch teams
which did well at the season-opening Cougar Classic,
a fast start was made to order. For programs which failed
to meet early expectations, it's now time to dust off
and step forward.
Earlier in the week, West Hills did so after stopping
No. 2 Scripps Ranch. And on Friday (Mar. 18), it was
Patrick Henry's turn after blanking No. 7 Steele Canyon,
3-0, in Falcon Fiesta action.
"We know we're a good team, we just needed to
put some things together," said Patriots coach
DON SHAFFER.
Leading the way was junior pitcher GRACE HERNANDEZ,
who stopped the Cougars on just three basehits. She
was also backed by several defensive stops.
"Even though we only got three hits, we hit a
couple of shots," noted Steele Canyon coach JULIE
BOHE. "But their defense made some snags on line
drives."
Patrick Henry got all the runs they needed in the 1st
in taking a quick 2-0 advantage.
Senior first baseman ALEXANDRA MOOTRY doubled home
LEXEE HUTCHENS to open the scoring, then third baseman
JESSICA PING doubled in Mootry. In the 3rd, Mootry,
who went 2-for-4 came home again for a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, all the Cougars could muster were singles
by MICHELLE BEASLEY, ASHLEY BARANOV and VANESSA KELLEMS.
GROSSMONT 1, EASTLAKE 1 (tie, 11 inn.)
Foothillers senior RACHEL STALFORD continued her rate
of more than one strikeout per inning, but neither team
could score over the final 90 minutes before darkness
arrived in Friday's (Mar. 18) non-league dram.
Stalford finished with 13 strikeouts yet needed to
settle for a no decision.
Grossmont scored in the 4th inning when HAYLEY KASDEN
walked, then SARAH NICKS singled to left field. But
when the throw sailed past all of the Titans infielders
and bounced along the backstop, Kasden waltzed home.
Eastlake answered to get even in the 5th. Following
a 2-out walk, Christensen saw her basehit skip underneath
an extended outfielder, rolling by for a triple.
The Hillers had one chance to re-claim the lead, but
LAUREN MIRANDA failed to get either of a pair of calls
while on the bases.
While attempting to steal second base, a ground ball
to third base was thrown away to first, which would've
allowed Miranda to easily score. However, the ball found
an opening in the fence, forcing her back to third.
Moments later, Miranda appeared to have scored on a
squeeze bunt, but was ruled out at home even though
the tag was high on her shoulder while her legs were
clearly past the plate.
BONITA VISTA 9, GRANITE HILLS 2 Eagles
head coach ERIN COYNE could take one small positive
out of Friday's (Mar. 18) Falcon Fiesta setback against
Barons pitcher Jennifer Hartman.
"Well, at least she's going to Sacramento State," noted Coyne, herself a one-time standout for
the Hornets. "We had a real difficult time hitting
against her."
For Granite Hills, FELICIA VINCENT batted 2-for-4 against
Hartman, including an RBI single to drive in fellow
sophomore ALISSA BUDVARSON in the 3rd inning. However,
five errors would doom the Eagles.

The Barons (7-0), who are anticipated to be the San

polls next week after capturing the Cougar Classic,
remained undefeated as freshman Alex Vargas batted 3-for-3
and drove in a pair of runs.
UNIVERSITY CITY 1, VALHALLA 0 Norsemen pitcher
TORREY ROOK also spun a 3-hitter Friday (Mar. 18), but
when her teammates failed to score, the senior was saddled
with the loss in a non-league ballgame.
Rook registered 10 strikeouts for the third consecutive
outing, yet was beat on an RBI double to left field
by Alexis Curtiss in the 4th inning.

Sultans' Schisler making the adjustment
© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (3-18-11) When baseball made the transition
from wood to aluminum bats, there was talk about starting
a new section of records now that pitching would no
longer dominate.
The same scenario may occur in fastpitch.
With the pitching rubber pushed back a yard to 43 feet,
strikeouts are down in the early going this season,
with many observing that only the upper crust of pitchers
are able to achieve double-digits in strikeouts.
One of those may be Santana's AMBER SCHISLER, who reached
the becoming-more-rare plateau to stop visiting Clairemont,
4-2, in Thursday's (Mar. 18) non-league contest.
Schisler sat down the Chieftains on just four hits,
including two over the final six innings. And when sister
EMILY SCHISLER bombed her first career over-the-fence
home run in the 6th inning, the Sultans gained the needed
insurance run to move their record to an East County
best 5-2.
Senior right fielder CAITLIN ARNDT batted 2-for-3 with
a double, while sophomore catcher KAYTI GRABLE also
went 2-for-3 among the team's nine hits.
Down 1-0, TARA GRENNAN and Arndt moved the ballclub
even with consecutive doubles in the 2nd. An inning
later, Grable's basehit to left drove in ARIEL RASMUSSON
(safe on error, stolen base) with the go-ahead run,
followed by a run-scoring basehit by Amber Schisler
to bring home courtesy runner CATHRYN CANCILLER-PETTY.
WESTVIEW 8, VALHALLA 1 The Wolverines
erupted for six runs in the 1st inning, then clean-up
hitter Jessica Snider smacked a 2-run homer in the 4th,
allowing the hosts to quickly "deep six" the
Norsemen in Thursday's (Mar. 17) non-league contest.
Catcher Sasha Margulies also posted a pair of doubles,
part of Westview's 10-hit attack to back winning pitcher
Kaylynn Pierce, who tossed a 6-hitter to send Valhalla
(2-1) to its first setback of the season.
Trailing 8-0, the Norsemen avoided the shutout in the
6th when NAOMI TELLEZ turned around a changeup for her
first home run of the season. RACHEL DIEDRICH also recorded
a pair of basehits.

Norsemen hold on to down Patrick Henry

SAN CARLOS (3-17-11) One of the most difficult
stretches of ballgames by any East County fastpitch
program this season saw Valhalla High nearly give away
a 3-run lead, but the Norsemen hung on to down host
Patrick Henry, 3-2, in Wednesday's (Mar. 16) non-league
contest.
Valhalla, the region's lone remaining undefeated team,
carried a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the 7th inning,
but a pair of errors allowed the Patriots to score twice
with the opportunity to pull out a surprising triumph.
However, Norsemen pitcher TORREY ROOK overcame the
miscues thanks to a strong defensive stop by first baseman
MADISON HAUSEUR. With Henry runners on the corners,
the Patriots attempted a 2-out bunt looking for a surprise
basehit, but Hauseur was able to collect the ball and
touch first base ahead of the batter for the final out.
Rook finished with 10 strikeouts to down Henry's GRACE
HERNANDEZ, who pitched a complete game 6-hitter.
MADISON LABSHERE paced the Norsemen to a 3-0 lead with
run-scoring hits in the 3rd and 6th innings. Her first
hit was a double to left field, bringing home KYLA CLAPHAM,
who reached on an error. Later, Labshere's sharp basehit
scored LIANA GORNEY, who singled up the middle, then
moved into scoring position on a MEGAN HUGHES sacrifice
bunt.
In between, Valhalla gained another unearned run when
Rook reached on an error, with courtesy runner ELSA
MONTES coming around on consecutive basehits by DIONNA
SMITH and Clapham.
The Patriots (1-4) Henry broke up the Valhalla shutout
with two runs in the 7th. Hernandez walked to lead off
the inning. Third baseman JESSICA PING slammed her second
double to left-center, advancing Hernandez to third.
Both runners scored on Valhalla errors, but Hausers
defensive gem saved the win for the Norsemen.
Upcoming games for Valhalla include trips to Westview
(Thursday) and University City (Friday).
DEL NORTE 13, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 (6 inn.)
The picture is becoming clearer in the annual Friar
Classic tournament after the first-year program at North
County's Del Norte High clinched a berth in the semifinals.
The Nighthawks joined Christian High in the Final Four
after pitcher Megan Vincent tossed a 4-hit shutout to
down host El Cajon Valley in Wednesday's (Mar. 16) contest.
The Braves' CHELSEA BALL and EVELYN GLAUDE each batted
2-for-3 against Vincent for the team's only hits.
Meanwhile, Del Norte right fielder Meghan Haley went
a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, driving in a pair of
runs and scoring once.

Wolf Pack rebound, down 2nd-ranked Scripps Ranch
© East County Sports.com
SCRIPPS RANCH (3-16-11) After learning the hard
way that they really can compete with the best teams
in the county, West Hills High rebounded after making
the mental adjustment Tuesday (Mar. 15) and took out
one of the top-ranked teams in the county.
Without committing any errors - a sore spot which
doomed them at the Cougar Classic the Wolf Pack
re-entered the category of worthy SDCIF Division II
contenders after downing host Scripps Ranch, 3-1. The
Falcons are ranked as high as second in this week's
initial major media polls.
"We were able to get into their heads a little
bit," noted senior centerfielder TAYLOR HALLAHAN,
who beat out a scratch single in the 5th inning to start
a 3-run rally. "We wanted to win and we came here
to win."
The Pack (2-2-1) found a way to defeat the mental demons
which led to a pair of late-inning collapses at Kit
Carson Park. Completing play after play on defense,
the potent Scripps Ranch lineup was limited to just
three singles all afternoon by pitcher NOELLE JOHNSON.
"We played strong at the Cougar Classic, but then
we got lazy at the end of some of those games,"
noted Hallahan in givebacks to Torrey Pines and Rancho
Bernardo. "But we believe in each other just like
last year's team, so we kept our energy up this time
and closed out the game."
Among the setbacks last week was a 6-2 loss to the
Falcons. This time, West Hills was the stronger team
throughout.
After getting a pair of runners on base in the opening
two innings, Hallahan beat out a tapper to third base
for a one-out single in the 5th, followed by a bloop
double by MELISSA EGGLESTON to place two runners in
scoring position.
Johnson followed with a bunt, squeezing home Hallahan
to snap the scoreless contest. But when Johnson took
second base drawing a throw from the catcher
Eggleston hustled to race home for a 2-0 lead.
Later, an error would make it a 3-run advantage.
Scripps Ranch opened the 7th with a walk and a basehit,
which could've meant trouble yet again for West Hills.
However, the defense took an important second out at
first base while allowing a run to come home, then Johnson
closed out her pitching victory by coaxing an easy ground
out to second baseman VANESSA McHUGH.
"We're still a young team," said West Hills
coach MIKE APPLEBAUM. "But a win like this one
is a real confidence builder."
Eggleston, the right fielder, and freshman third baseman
CORTNEY HORNE collected two hits each for West Hills.
EL CAJON VALLEY 14, SAN YSIDRO 4 KAMY
ROJAS drove in four runs in a 3-for-3 outing at the
plate, as the Braves exploded for six runs before the
Cougars came to the plate to take a non-league triumph
Tuesday (Mar. 15) in the South Bay.
Rojas started the big rally with a double, but her
biggest hit was a 2-run double in the 4th. She also
scored twice.
Meanwhile, EVELYN GLAUDE batted 2-for-3 with an RBI
and a pair of runs scored, moving ECVHS (3-2) back above
the .500 plateau. The Braves own the second-best record
among Grossmont Valley League schools, behind only Santana
(4-2).

Bronze Bracket
SANTANA 1, LA COSTA CANYON 0; SANTANA 3, TORREY
PINES 0 A pair of shutouts by AMBER
SCHISLER and the defensive work of centerfielder
EMILY SCHISLER powered the Sultans to a strong
finish at the Cougar Classic after upending a
pair of strong North County ballclubs Monday (Mar.
14).
Amber Schisler blanked the Mavericks on just
four hits in the semifinals, then survived seven
Falcons in the final, including stranding a pair
of baserunners when Torrey Pines, the top-ranked
team in the San Diego Union Tribune preseason
poll, mounted a late comeback in the 6th.
Emily Schisler then provided the dramatics from
the outfield.
In game one, with two outs in the 7th, La Costa
Canyon coach Mike Hill sent a runner home from
second base on a basehit up the middle. However,
Schisler fired a strike to the plate to catcher
KAYTI GRABLE for the game's final out to preserve
the 1-0 victory.
The nightcap produced an even better defensive
effort.
With Santana already leading 3-0, Torrey Pines
had the potential tying run at the plate in the
4th when Falcons third baseman Mary Lee sent a
low liner to center. Not only did Schisler made
the shoestring grab, she recovered to throw a
strike to second base for a double play.
The relay to first base for a potential triple
play, however, saw the throw hit the runner in
the back.
"I was just charging the ball as hard as
I could because I didn't know if it was going
to drop," said Schisler. "Obviously,
this game was all about the defense, but it wasn't
just me."
Included was a strong scoop out of the dirt by
first baseman TARA GRENNEN to end the ballgame,
preventing Torrey Pines from sending the tying
run to the plate and prevent a late rally.
"I learned as a freshman that you can always
bounce back and be strong by counting on your
defense," Schisler added.
The game's lone run saw Grennen get hit by a
pitch in the 4th, then come around on a pair of
wild pitches, then score on an RBI single by CAITLIN
ARNDT.
In the finale, the Sultans opened a lead single
by ARIEL RASMUSSON, eventually scoring on a double
to the right-field fence by AMANDA GRABLE.
An inning later, Santana collected a pair of
unearned runs on three Falcons errors. Arndt scored
on an Amanda Grable basehit, then KENDRA KUPER
came home when a ball hit by Amber Schisler was
booted.
Santana, which went a mere 1-2 in pool play,
closed strongly with three straight victories
to move its record to 4-2 overall.

New D-2 giants hails from the South Bay
© East County Sports.com
ESCONDIDO (3-15-11) Despite the plethora of Palomar
League ballclubs composing the majority of Gold (pool
champions) Bracket schools at the Cougar Classic, a
non-traditional program stepped up to claim the tournament
championship.
Dominating the field over the tournament's 6-day run
at Kit Carson Park was Bonita Vista, which outscored
its six opponents by an astounding 54-3 count, including
Monday (Mar. 14) night's 5-0 thrashing of 4-time defending
SDCIF Division II titlist Mt. Carmel in the final.
Junior pitcher Jennifer Hartman, who will attend college
at Sacramento State, tossed four of five Barons shutouts
in the 32-team event to be named Most Valuable Pitcher
by the attending media. Meanwhile, senior outfielder
Kayla Jordan,a 2-way threat on offense and defense,
was tabbed Most Valuable Player by the same panel.
The Barons have produced strong clubs over recent years,
yet often got upstaged in postseason play.
The school owns only one San Diego Section title game
appearance, coming way back in 1977 (a 2-1 loss to Patrick
Henry). Even the school's 2000 ballclub, which set the
section's 4th-longest all-time winning streak, was eliminated
in the semifinals, as did the 2002 edition of the Barons
which featured SDCIF Div. I player of the year Vanessa
Iapala.
"We came here knowing that everybody talks about
the North County teams," said Jordan, who belted
a 2-run homer among her three RBI.
Added Hartman, "And we still got something to
prove. Other people under-estimate us because we're
not from the North County."
Backing Hartman in the circle is freshman Alex Vargas,
who out-dueled Mt. Carmel's Bree Williams in the finale.
And with several other Division II ballclubs playing
less than stellar softball at this year's kickoff tournament,
the Barons could find themselves ranked No. 1 in the
county when the initial in-season rankings are released.
Earlier in the day, Bonita Vista earned its berth to
the final by overwhelming another strong D-2 program
in Scripps Ranch, 7-0. The Sundevils won their semifinal
by handing San Marcos pitcher Christina Clermont, who
recently committed to Syracuse, her first setback in
five starts, 2-0, behind a 1-hitter by Williams.
Silver Bracket
CARLSBAD 5, STEELE CANYON 4 The Cougars mounted
a 4-0 lead, only to hand it all back to the eventual
Silver Division champion Lancers, who later downed Rancho
Bernardo, 2-0, in the final.
Steele Canyon scored twice in the 1st inning on a 2-run
single by AMANDA HARTNETT, then doubled the advantage
in the 5th on a 2-run double by ASHLEY BARANOV.
However, Carlsbad answered with three runs in the 5th,
then Erica Piancasella smacked a game-winning, 2-run
single an inning later.
Copper Bracket
SAN PASQUAL 10, GRANITE HILLS 1 The Eagles, which
rebounded from three straight shutouts to collect their
first triumph of the season, was knocked out of the
tournament with a semifinals setback to San Pasqual
on just two hits.
The Golden Eagles then were trashed in the division
final to Mission Hills, 12-1.
No information was reported by Granite Hills.
Friar Classic
CHRISTIAN 6, LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 2 The Torreys
strategy to avoid pitching to Patriots catcher MARY
GRABOWSKI nearly worked. They pitched around the junior
standout three times on walks to maintain a 2-2 deadlock.
However, the Patriots (3-2) found offense from other
sources to pocket four runs in the 6th inning to claim
Monday's (Mar. 14) Friar Classic. With the victory,
Christian gained a berth in the tournament semifinals
after going 3-1 in pool play.
LJCD scored twice in the 1st, but the Pats got even
on a 2-run double by ALYSSA HARRIS in the 3rd. The teams
then continue to exchange zeroes before MONIQUE ELLIOTT
lined a 2-run single to snap the tie in the 6th, followed
by a bases-loaded walk to Harris.
Elliott also picked up the pitching win by striking
out 11 Torreys. Both teams collected just four hits.
SANTA FE CHRISTIAN 16, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 The
Eagles' Suzy Weaver belted a pair of doubles, good for
four RBI, as Santa Fe Christian scored in every inning
to vanquish the Matadors. Lyndsey Pritchard also posted
two doubles in a 4-for-4, four runs scoring outing.

Cougar Classic heads into final rounds
© East County Sports.com
ESCONDIDO (3-13-11) While six East County teams
floundered in various consolation divisions of the annual
Cougar Classic to kick off the 2011 fastpitch season,
teams from the Palomar League took over the championship
bracket. However, surprises were in store in Saturday's
(Mar. 12) quarterfinals.
Behind a no-hitter by Christina Clermont, San Marcos
(4-0) remained undefeated by stopping Poway, 3-0, The
Knights advanced to Monday's semifinals to meet 4-time
defending SDCIF Division II titlist Mt. Carmel, which
overwhelmed previously unbeaten Westview, 15-1.
Meanwhile, in a battle of 3-0 ballclubs tournament
host Escondido was eliminated by the Bonita Vista Barons,
5-3. The Barons will meet Scripps Ranch, which blanked
Cathedral Catholic, 2-0.
STEELE CANYON 4, POINT LOMA 3 (8 inn.)
In a crazy international tiebreaker, the Pointers scored
twice to snap a game tied at 1-1 through regulation,
but the Cougars bounced back with three markers to gain
a berth in the Silver Bracket quarterfinals.
JESSICA THOMPSON, who thought she might be the goat
after a key error allowed Point Loma take the lead,
rebounded nicely with the game-winning basehit moments
after COURTNEY JOHNSON stroked a 2-run single to tie
it.
Johnson's liner to center brought home MICHELLE BEASLEY
(bunt single) and ASHLEY BARANOV. Johnson was replaced
by courtesy runner ALYSSA MASCARI, who promptly stole
second base, then scored on Thompson's drive up the
middle.
Point Loma led 1-0 early, with Steele Canyon finally
getting even in the 6th when Beasley singled. But when
the right fielder allowed the ball to skip past her
and roll away on the fenceless outfield, Beasley easily
circumnavigated the diamond.
SANTANA 7, BRAWLEY 0 AMBER SCHISLER spun
a tidy 2-hit shutout to subdue the Imperial Valley based
Wildcats in Bronze Bracket play at the Cougar Classic.
The left-hander struck out four and walked just a single
batter.
Schisler also ignited a 4-run rally in the 5th inning.
Already leading after scoring single markers over the
first three innings, she bombed a deep home run to right
field, with some reporting that the ball struck the
Kit Carson Park roller hockey building on the fly
an estimated 275-foot shot.
The rally also featured an RBI basehit by BRIDGETTE
FRIES, while a pair of passed balls plated two other
runs.
Schisler went 2-for-3, also belting a 1st-inning double
which led to a run.
The Sultans will meet La Costa Canyon in Monday's Bronze
semifinals.
GRANITE HILLS 12, HELIX 9 (4 inn., time limit)
After getting shutout on a mere five hits over the first
three games of the season, the Eagles' bats rose like
a Phoenix to explode for a dozen runs on 10 hits.
Still, Granite Hills trailed 6-5 entering the 4th (and
final) inning, yet registered seven runs to down the
Grossmont Hills League rival Highlanders in a Copper
Bracket elimination ballgame.
DESIREE MEJIA, who failed to get a victory after posting
a shutout of powerful University City in a scoreless
draw earlier in the event, this time was tagged for
all nine runs. However, she still collected the win
after sophomore KIMMY TRIOLO entered in relief to retire
the final two Helix batters to garner a save.
The big Granite Hills outburst featured a 2-run triple
by Triolo.
Sophomore FELICIA VINCENT batted 3-for-3 with a pair
of RBI for the Eagles, senior ROXANNA SAAVERDA went
2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI, while ALLIE CIMMARRUSTI
posted two hits and an RBI.
Granite Hills (1-3) meets San Pasqual in a consolation
contest on Monday.
No information reported by Helix.
TORREY PINES 5, GROSSMONT 1 The Falcons,
who are expected to be ranked No. 1 in the San Diego
Section when the first of two major SDCIF softball polls
are released next week, accepted a pair of Foothillers
errors to produce a pair of unearned runs in the 5th
inning to snap a 1-1 battle.
Down 1-0, the Hillers scored their lone run against
Torrey Pines' best and often injured pitcher in
Rachel Nasland in the 3rd inning.
LAUREN MIRANDA eventually scored on a wild scramble
of a play. Standing at third with the bases loaded,
a pop-up resulted in an infield fly call by the umpires.
But when the ball dropped, few seemed to know the rule
as many of the runners took off, resulting in a double
play while Miranda took home.
Grossmont pitcher RACHEL STALFORD was solid in a 5-strikeout
performance, with four of the five runs she allowed
coming on defensive miscues.
RANCHO BERNARDO 6, WEST HILLS 2 Another
late-inning collapse by the Wolf Pack saw the Broncos
tally all six of their runs in the 5th (and final) inning
to take a stunning victory and send West Hills packing
out of the Silver Bracket quarterfinals.
No information reported by West Hills.
CARLSBAD 3, PATRICK HENRY 1 The Lancers'
Kirsten Anady delivered a 2-run single in the 2nd inning,
which would be enough to eliminate the Patriots from
the Silver Bracket in Saturday's (Mar. 12) round-of-8.
No information reported by Patrick Henry.

Pitching rookie Elliott tosses no-hitter
© East County Sports.com
OCEANSIDE (3-12-11) East County high schools
can once again parade a line of top-flight pitchers,
but one missing from the list stepped up for her finest
effort in a short career inside the circle.
Christian High senior MONIQUE ELLIOTT, a career club
and high school shortstop who tossed less than 40 innings
for the Patriots in spot appearances last season, demonstrated
she's a quick learner.
On Friday (Mar. 11), while the majority of East County
schools found trouble in the North County, Elliott sparkled
by tossing a no-hitter in Christian's 5-0 verdict over
Oceanside in a Friar Classic contest.
"Considering Mo has never pitched except for us
a little bit last season, yet she was outstanding,"
said Patriots coach GEORGE GENTRY. "Shes
simply getting better and better each game."
Elliott struck out nine Pirates, then survived to collect
the shutout after walking four, with three others stranded
after reaching on errors.
Meanwhile, junior catcher MARY GRABOWSKIs torrid
hitting stretch continued. Although her streak of consecutive
hits ended at eight at-bats, Grabowski batted 3-for-4
with a double and a triple, worth three RBI.
Included was a 1st-inning triple to give Christian
a 1-0 lead, then a 2-run double in the 5th, when the
Pats scored three times to push the margin to 4-0. Her
totals for the week featured six extra-base hits (4
doubles, 1 triple and 1 homer), good for 11 RBI.
Against Oceanside, JEANNIE VEST went 3-for-4 and an
RBI, while Elliott aided her own cause by going 2-for-3,
scoring three times including an insurance run in the
7th.
Meanwhile, Grossmont Conference schools had a long
day on the final pool-play ballgames at the Cougar Classic
in Escondido.
GROSSMONT 7, EL CENTRO-SOUTHWEST 0 The
Foothillers were the lone side to collect a victory
at Kit Carson Park on Friday (Mar. 11) after pitcher
RACHEL STALFORD tossed a 3-hit shutout for the team's
first triumph of the season in three starts.
Stalford struck out five Eagles and yielded just three
singles.
Meanwhile, AUBRIE MAY slugged her first home run of
the season, clouting a shot to left field in the 3rd
inning for a 2-0 lead.
KAYLA APPENZELLER opened the scoring by singling home
SARAH NICKS in the 3rd.
The Hillers then broke the game open with five runs
in the 4th, featuring run-scoring basehits by HEATHER
CLEMENT, AMANDA PORTER and KAITLYN NICKS. HAYLEY KASDEN
then slapped a 2-run single.
Nicks, the designated player, went 3-for-3 with the
triple to highlight an 11-hit attack.
HELIX 5, CLAIREMONT 5, tie (4 inn., time limit)
In a slow-moving contest that lasted a mere four
innings due to the tournament time limit, the Highlanders
thought they were robbed when the Chieftains tied the
contest on a sacrifice fly one out short of the ballgame
ending.
The play at the plate was close, but the Scotties were
confident the runner from third base had tagged up too
soon.
Unfortunately, upon appeal, both umpires looked at
each other thinking the other was supposed to watch
the baserunner. Thus, they were unable to honor the
appeal, leaving the Scotties with an unappetizing draw
to deny pitcher KEANA NAKATA and Helix (0-2-1) their
first victory in three starts.
Down 3-1 after one inning, CLAUDETTE SMITH brought
the Scotties back with a series of extra base hits in
a 3-for-3 outing good for 10 total bases.
Following a lead triple and scoring in the 1st, Smith
slugged a 2-run, game-tying homer in the 2nd, then a
2-run, go-ahead triple in the 4th.
"I just had a good day because I ate my Beasty
O's this morning," said Smith, the team's senior
catcher. "We're still a young team and all feel
everything will work out. We all love each others and
put it all on the field."
POWAY 3, STEELE CANYON 1 The Cougars
had a shot at a berth into the Gold Bracket quarterfinals,
but the Titans took the pool after scoring twice in
the 4th to snap a 1-1 tie.
Down 1-0, Steele Canyon registered half of the team's
six basehits in the 3rd to move even.
VANESSA KELLEMS reached with a basehit to center, then
went around the diamond in station-to-station fashion
on a GABRIELLE BEASLEY bunt, a MICHELLE BEASLEY single,
then an RBI single by COURTNEY THOMPSON.
Poway re-gained the lead on an RBI single by senior
Steph Rocco.

SCRIPPS RANCH 6, WEST HILLS 2 The Wolf
Pack also were in contention for a berth into the championship
round, but needed to settle for the Silver Bracket after
the Falcons jumped to a 6-0 lead.
West Hills continued to have problems in the field,
when a throw from the outfield missed the cutoff, allowing
Scripps Ranch to take an extra base and place two runners
in scoring position in the 3rd inning. Melisa Datko
then bombed a 2-run triple that ticked off the glove
of the centerfielder to break the scoreless contest.
Scripps Ranch added three more in the 6th (and final)
inning before West Hills avoided the shutout bid by
Meredith Brown when designated player SAVANNA BAGGETT
belted a 2-run double with two outs.
RAMONA 9, GRANITE HILLS 0 The Eagles
bats continue to snooze after they suffered their third
straight shutout to open the season, this time on a
1-hitter by Bulldogs pitcher Kailey Hill.
Amber Davis hit a 2-run homer for Ramona (1-2). The
lone hit for Granite Hills (0-2-1) was a leadoff single
by SAVANNAH BROOKS in the 6th (and final) inning.
MT. CARMEL 6, PATRICK HENRY 0 Sundevils
senior Bree Williams, a member of the All-County team
last season, is off to a 3-0 start after tossing a 4-hitter
at the Patriots.
Second baseman Nikki Barber went 2-for-3 with an RBI
double and a walk, while Taylor Abeyta drove in a pair
of runs, sending Patrick Henry into the Silver Bracket
against Carlsbad.
FALLBROOK 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 The Braves
traveled to the north end of San Diego County for a
Friar Classic contest, but the Warriors tallied seven
times in the 1st to end it early and send ECVHS (2-1)
to its first loss.
For El Cajon Valley, CHELSEA BALL and MONICA DUGGAN
each went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while KAMY ROJAS
knocked in Ball for an RBI, while Duggan scored on a
passed ball.

Showdowns set for Cougar Classic berths

ESCONDIDO (3-11-11) Steele Canyon and West Hills
high schools will play for berths in the championship
round of the Cougar Classic during Friday's (Mar. 11)
final round of pool play among 32 teams over eight divisions.
Steele Canyon will meet Poway in a battle of undefeated
ballclubs. Meanwhile, West Hills will tangle with Scripps
Ranch, both 1-0-1, in a wild Pool D which has already
featured a pair of tie games.
The Steele Canyon-Poway winner will probably advance
to meet defending SDCIF Division II champion Mt. Carmel. Meanwhile, a Wolf Pack win means a meeting with one
of three teams Westview, Carlsbad or Mira Mesa
in Saturday's Gold Bracket round-of-8.
STEELE CANYON 8, VISTA 2 ASHLEY BARANOV
propelled the Cougars to an early lead, slugging a solo
homer in the 2nd inning to top the Panthers in Thursday's
(Mar. 10) action at Kit Carson Park.
Steele Canyon then posted four additional runs in the
3rd, including a 2-run single by COURTNEY JOHNSON, allowing
two of their newer pitchers to relax in their initial
varsity appearances.
Starting pitcher BRITTANY HOPKINS tossed four solid
innings to gain her first career victory, then GRACE
KRAMER recorded a pair of perfect innings in relief
to garner the save in the combined 3-hitter.
The Cougars rocked Vista for 13 hits, led by the BEASLEY
sisters third baseman GABRIELLE and shortstop MICHELLE
who each went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
In addition, the team received 2-for-4 outings from
catcher TORI YANITOR, center fielder AMANDA HARTNETT
and right fielder VANESSA KELLEMS.
GRANITE HILLS 0, UNIVERSITY CITY 0, tie
Eagles pitcher DESIREE MEJIA was in trouble throughout
Thursday's (Mar. 10) Cougar Classic pool play contest
against University City.
The Centurions placed two runners on base over six
of the game's seven innings, plus one other runner in
the remaining frame for 13 total baserunners. And Mejia
escaped each and every jam to gain a scoreless draw
when the time-limit hit.
Mejia gained most of her outs on ground balls, while
UC pitcher AMANDA HANSEN dominated with nine strikeouts
in tossing a 2-hit shutout.
The lone Eagles hits were registered by freshman designated
player BROOKLYN SCHWENN, who went 2-for-3 with singles
in the 2nd and 5th innings.
The draw keeps Granite Hills in contention for a Silver
Bracket championship round berth with a victory Friday
against winless Ramona.
PATRICK HENRY 6, LA COSTA CANYON 2 The
anticipated extended absence of pitcher GRACE HERNANDEZ
never materialized. Bouncing back from getting hit in
the ankle by a line drive, the junior returned to limit
the Mavericks to just four basehits in Thursday's (Mar.
10) Cougar Classic contest.
Her teammates made things easier before Hernandez entered
the pitching circle, scoring twice in the top of the
1st.
LEXEE HUTCHENS opened the ballgame with a walk, moving
to second base on a sacrifice bunt by CARLY MITCHELL.
Hutchens eventually came home on a ground ball to the
right side by ALEXANDRA MOOTRY, who would score on consecutive
basehits by Hernandez and JESSICA PING.
La Costa Canyon halved the lead in the 3rd, but the
Patriots answered back with a 4-spot in the 4th to put
away the victory.
The big blow came from Mootry, who delivered a 2-run
triple to plate JENNIFER SCHUFF and Mitchell. Hernandez
later added one of her two doubles, finishing 3-for-4
with an RBI.
POWAY 6, SANTANA 3 It was a contest of
missed opportunities for the Sultans.
Immediately after Santana failed to score despite placing
four runners on base in the 4th, the Titans answered
in the 5th when first baseman Kat Duran slugged a grand
slam to mount a 6-1 lead to move the Titans within a
game of the championship round of the Cougar Classic.
Poway needs to defeat Steele Canyon to advance. The
teams are both 2-0 heading into Friday's final pool
play contest.
Santana grabbed an early 1-0 lead on singles by AMANDA
GRABLE and KAYTI GRABLE, with a ground ball to the right
side by TARA GRENNEN pushing home the run.
Poway answered on consecutive triples by Duran and
Ash Ercolano, then Chase Snell singled to bring home
pinch runner Dani White.
The Sultans registered a pair of basehits to open the
4th, but when the lead runner attempted to take an extra
base, right fielder Brit Barilli threw a strike to third
base for an out. Third baseman Ash Andruski then fired
the second base to double-up the batter.
Santana then placed two additional runners on base
for four in the inning, but Ercolano escaped with a
ground out to maintain a 2-1 lead.
The Sultans scored late before the tournament timer
expired, including a 2-run triple by KENDRA KUPER. AMBER
SCHISLER also registered an RBI.
RANCHO BERNARDO 6, GROSSMONT 1 Confusion
abounded, especially for the umpires, when both sides
wore identical uniforms, from helmets, shirts and pants.
But there was little confusion on the part of Broncos
pitcher Sara White, who allowed a 1st-inning triple,
but nothing else, to keep Rancho Bernardo undefeated.
White yielded a two-out triple to the Hillers' AUBRIE
MAY, followed by a walk to RACHEL STALFORD. Grossmont
coach JERRY LERUD then called for a double-steal, and
when the ball sailed through the infield, May scored
for a quick 1-0 advantage.
However, the Broncos responded with five runs in the
2nd, including a 2-run single by Danielle Knoetze, keeping
them in a tie with Cathedral Catholic for the pool lead.
Those teams meet Friday for a berth in the championship
quarterfinals, while Grossmont closes against El Centro-Southwest.
EL CAJON VALLEY 15, CRAWFORD 2 Braves
pitcher GINA GARCIA fired a 1-hitter, helping undefeated
El Cajon Valley bury the Colts for the seventh time
over a 6-year span in Thursday's (Mar. 10) non-league
triumph.
ECVHS (2-0) busted open a 4-0 lead after scoring seven
times in the 3rd inning in a win via run rule.
CHELSEA BALL got the Braves going with a lead triple
in the 1st, coming home with the first run on a double
by KAMY ROJAS. For the contest, Ball batted 3-for-4
with two runs and a pair of RBI.
Also fueling a 12-hit attack were EVELYN GLAUDE, MERLINDA
LOPEZ and VIRGINIA HOPPER with two hits each. Glaude's
effort included three runs and an RBI, two runs by Lopez,
while Hopper registered an RBI and scored twice.
OTAY RANCH 13, EL CAPITAN 3 No information
reported on this Friar Classic contest.
