Nasser, Broncos fall to record-setting Findlay

© East County Sports.com
SPRINGFIELD , Mass. (3-29-09) — The dream run for former Cuyamaca College basketball standout DAHIR NASSER and his West Regional champion Cal Poly Pomona Broncos is over. But if you're going to lose, you might as well do so in memorable fashion.

Findlay University of Ohio became just the fourth team to finish undefeated since the NCAA Division II tournament began in 1957 after Tyler Evans hit a long 3-point shot at the buzzer to claim the crown, 56-53 in overtime. The Oilers finish with a perfect 36-0 slate.

For Evans, a senior reserve guard, it was his only basket on the afternoon, televised nationally on CBS from MassMutual Center.

Cal Poly Pomona (25-8) was trying to become the first unranked team to win the tournament since North Alabama in 1979. The Broncos overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half, and led 41-40 when Larry Gordon (17 points) hit a 3-pointer with 5:30 left in regulation, capping a 19-4 run.

Cal Poly Pomona (25-7)
vs. Findlay (35-0)
Nasser, who moved up the ranks to become a starting guard late in the season, played 32 minutes and scored just 2 points, yet led the team in assists.

POMONA (3-27-09) — Former Cuyamaca College basketball player DAHIR NASSER and his Cal Poly Pomona (West Regional champions) basketball team are playing No. 1 ranked Findlay of Ohio (Midwest Regional champions) in an NCAA Division II Elite Eight national championship game on Saturday (Mar. 28) at 10 a.m.

The game will be televised from MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass., by CBS Sports (Channel 8).

A 6-foot-1 junior, Nasser (No. 5) is listed as a probable starter for the Broncos. He is averaging 5.6 ppg and 2.6 rpg. Nasser was a first team All-Pacific Coast Conference player for the Coyotes during the 2007-08 season.

EL CAJON (11-9-08) — Former Helix High standout BRANDON FOUNTAIN was named the MVP of the annual Cuyamaca Tip-Off Classic won by the host Coyotes Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon with a 69-61 victory over Los Angeles Valley in the championship contest.

Fountain, a 6-foot-1 guard, was a defensive specialist in high school. However, he was the Coyotes’ high scorer in Cuyamaca’s conquest of the Monarchs with 19 points. Fountain totaled 30 points in the Coyotes’ two-game tournament sweep, which included a 69-66 first round win over Cypress.

Other Coyotes named to the all-tournament team were IAN COCHRAN (Grossmont) and KENNY BRADFORD (Eastlake).

Next up for the Coyotes (2-0) is the Irvine Valley Tournament, which runs from Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 13-15). Cuyamaca faces Santa Monica in the first round at 4 p.m.

Griffins get swept at Canyons Tournament

VALENCIA (11-9-08) — Even though Grossmont College staggered out of the starting gate with back-to-back losses in the College of the Canyons Classic over the weekend (Nov. 7-8), Griffins coach DOUG WEBER isn’t overly concerned.

“We had a couple of tough ones, but I think we’re going to be all right,” Weber said following Saturday’s (Nov. 8) consolation loss to Santa Monica 72-69. That setback followed a season-opening 98-89 loss to host College of the Canyons on Friday (Nov. 7).

In the loss to Canyons, the Griffins nearly overcame a 17-point deficit but missed 13 free throws to thwart their comeback effort.

TYRONE PAINE, a guard out of Killeen, Texas, paced Grossmont with 21 points against Canyons. CHRIS COLEMAN, a product of Serra, punched in 17 points and snared 7 rebounds, while 6-6 Patrick Henry graduate SETH KLUVER added 13 points and 6 rebounds.

Missed free throws in the final seconds cost the Griffins against Santa Monica. Despite those misfires, Grossmont still had a clear shot at a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with seven seconds remaining.

“It was one of those in-and-out jobs,” Weber said.

Coleman paced Grossmont with 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Corsairs. Six-foot-9 JAMES JOSEPHSON (Patrick Henry) added a dozen points for the Griffins.

Grossmont will take on perennial state power Citrus in Friday’s (Nov. 14) first round of the San Diego City College Tournament at 4 p.m.
