Nov. 30 / CIF SEMIFINALS

LAWRENCE WALKER, RB, Christian
CHARLES THOMPSON, RB, Christian

The Patriots' running backs combined for more than 300 yards on the ground, lifting Christian past rival Francis Parker, 26-21, in a rematch of the 2006 CIF Division V title game. Walker finished with 169 yards and two touchdowns, surpassing Helix' Reggie Bush as the East County career rushing leader, while Thompson added 148 rushing yards and a score on 23 carries in the powerful 1-2 attack.

TRAVON CAPLES, WR, Mount Miguel
Caples, a senior wide receiver, equaled a Matadors record with 10 receptions, gaining more than half of the school-record 307 passing yards by quarterback AARON BRYANT in advancing Mount Miguel to its first Final Four berth since 1987. Caples finished with 155 receiving yards
RICO SMITH, DB/RB/Holder, Mount Miguel
Smith, a senior, improvised by running for the tie-breaking 2-point conversion with 0:02 remaining, lifting the Matadors past Ramona, 29-27, in handing the Bulldogs their first home loss of the season. Smith was also the team's leading rusher with 55 yards, including three TD runs, finishing the contest with 20 points.

JAMAR TAYLOR, FS, Helix
Taylor registered an interception and was one of the leading tacklers in another impressive defensive performance by the Highlanders. In the past seven games, the Scotties have allowed just four touchdowns (no more than one in a single game), posting four shutouts.

Nov. 16 / CIF FIRST ROUND
AARON BRYANT, QB, Mount Miguel
Bryant paced the Matadors to their first CIF playoff victory in 20 years by rallying past visiting El Capitan, 34-17, scoring 27 unanswered points to rally from a 10-point deficit. Bryant completed 14-of-26 passes for 203 yards, including a school-record four touchdown passes -- three during the comeback in the second half -- to beat the Vaqueros at their own game in the SDCIF Division III contest.

<-- ERIC FIEGE, WR/DB, West Hills
Fiege capped a last-minute drive with a 12-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds remaining, completing West Hills' 28-20 comeback victory over Westview in the 1st round of the SDCIF playoffs. Fiege also scored on runs of 3 and 40 yards, and he tossed a 2-point conversion pass.

HAYDEN KALFELL, SS, West Hills
Kalfell, a junior strong safety, registered two of four interceptions by the defense of the Wolf Pack, which rallied late to nip Westview, 28-21, in the opening round of the SDCIF Division II playoffs.

BRANDEN BROWN, WR/FS, Steele Canyon
Brown registered a game-high 11 tackles to pace the Cougars defense, then made a circus catch for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to help stop Mount Miguel, leaving the teams in a dead-heat for second place in the Grossmont South League. Brown finished with 3 receptions for 52 yards, including the grab of a tipped pass in the end zone to give Steele Canyon a 22-15 halftime lead.

PHILLIP COOK, WR, El Capitan
Cook, a 6-foot, 165-pound junior, enjoyed a breakout game with 5 receptions for 151 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 46-14 triumph over Santana. One of Cook's scoring plays was a 93-yard pass from quarterback Tanner Rust, who set a CIF-San Diego Section record with 597 passing yards. That long-range strike was 2 yards short of the Vaqueros' record set by SID MELERO on a pass from JASON HEISE against Santana in 1989. Cook's 4 TDs also ties him for the El Cap top mark with A.J. CONTI for touchdowns in a game.

HAROLD HARRIS, RB, Granite Hills
On a night when the Eagles set a school record for the longest pass play ever, it was Harris, a senior, who set the tone with a strong running game in a 38-31 victory over archrival Valhalla. On 24 carries, Harris rushed for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns -- including an 80-yard bolt -- then added a third score (a 46-yarder) on one of his two pass receptions for 54 additional yards to total 230 all-purpose yards.

Nov. 2-3
ERIC FIEGE, QB/WR/DB, West Hills
Fiege marked his senior-year debut at quarterback with two touchdowns and 211 yards in total offense, giving the Wolf Pack at least a share of the Grossmont North League title after shutting out Grossmont, 19-0. Fiege scored on a 70-yard touchdown run on the final play of the first quarter, then he moved to wide receiver and hauled in a 66-yard TD pass from Chris Misensol for a 12-0 halftime lead.
SAM HERNANDEZ, WR/LB, Christian
Hernandez registered a pair of interceptions and 10 tackles to power the defense in the Patriots' 20-10 decision over Francis Parker. The victory kept Christian undefeated (8-0) in a first-place deadlock with The Bishop's in the Coastal League. Hernandez also caught a pair of passes on offense.

AHMAAD NUNLEY, WR, Mount Miguel
Nunley caught an 83-yard touchdown pass-- part of a season-best outing of 6 catches for 158 yards -- to keep the Matadors in a first-place tie with Helix on top of the Grossmont South League standings.

AARON BRYANT, QB, Mount Miguel
Bryant, a senior, advanced the Matadors into next week's showdown with Helix for the Grossmont South League lead after leading Mount Miguel to a 50th anniversary homecoming triumph over Spring Valley rival Monte Vista. Bryant threw for 187 yards, then put the finishing touches on four drives with touchdown rushes, including a 5-yard TD run and a trio of
1-yard sneaks in a 35-19 decision -- the Matadors' third consecutive win.

ANDRES CHAVARIN, DE, Grossmont
Chavarin (90), a senior defensive end, registered three of the Foothillers' five quarterback sacks, shuting out Santana until the final moments of a 12-7 decision. Chavarin also forced a fumble among his 9 tackles, and he returned a first-half interception 40 yards. Grossmont, winners of three straight, now own more victories than any other Grossmont Conference school.

GAVINO PINAL, FS, El Cajon Valley
Pinal, a junior free safety, helped move the Braves into position for a 29-21 comeback victory over El Capitan. In addition to his 8 tackles, Pinal forced one fumble for a turnover, then recovered another fumble for a turnover, as El Cajon Valley scored the game's final 15 points for the school's third victory in four seasons over the Vaqueros.

Oct. 12-13
JONATHAN DARBY, SS, West Hills
Darby, a 6-foot, 178-pound senior, powered the Wolf Pack to a shutout of a Santana offensive unit which entered the teams' Grossmont North League opener with a 35-point scoring average. The strong safety, Darby registered 11 tackles including three quarterback sacks, helping limit the Sultans to just 200 yards in total offense.
LEVINE TOILOLO, TE/DL, Helix
Toilolo, a 6-foot-7, 245-pounder being wooed by several NCAA Division I programs, helped the Highlanders post a 43-0 stomping on Valhalla. As a tight end, the junior caught a pair of first-period touchdown passes. On defense, he registered a pair of sacks, leaving the Norsemen with a negative rushing yardage total, then Toilolo added a blocked punt on special teams.
JEBARI ROBINSON, WR/DB, Steele Canyon
Robinson, a 5-10, 168-pound junior, smacked Monte Vista on several fronts. He accounted for 128 all-purpose yards, topped by a 64-yard kickoff return. Robinson also paced the defense with a pair of inter-ceptions, matching his output on offense of 2 receptions for 37 yards.
WEEK 6

TONY MARCON, OLB, Monte Vista
Marcon, a 6-foot-2 senior linebacker, was credited with a career high
4 1/2 of the Monarchs' 5 sacks of West Hills quarterbacks, helping the Monarchs defense shutout the Wolf Pack. Marcon recorded 2 of his sacks on West Hills' final drive to keep the hosts out of the end zone. He also forced a fumble which led to a turnover.
LAWRENCE WALKER, RB, Christian
Walker broke the 100-yard barrier for the fourth time this season, recording a season-high 184 yards on 28 carries to nip Palo Verde Valley. Included was a 5-yard TD run to give the Patriots a 17-16 third-period lead after trailing the Yellowjackets at halftime in a road game which was delayed an hour due to a dust storm. With the effort, Walker became the 20th player in CIF-San Diego Section history to reach the 4,000-yard barrier for his career, now resting in 18th place with 4,095 yards.
BEN WILKINS, RB, El Capitan
Wilkins established school records with six touchdowns and 36 points to power the Vaqueros past Valhalla . The senior rushed 19 times for 192 yards (second only to his 225-yard effort in Week 4), including scoring romps of 59, 39, 18 and 12 yards, plus a pair of 1-yard plunges. For the season, Wilkins now owns a Grossmont Conference leading 12 touchdowns.

Sept. 28-29
DOMINIQUE BRADLEY, DB, Grossmont
Bradley, a junior, was credited with 22 tackles in the Foothillers' contest at Valhalla. The total was a career-high and the best reported total by an East County defender this season.
JAMIE DALE, RB, Steele Canyon
Dale rushed 27 times for 261 yards and 5 touchdowns to pace the Cougars past El Capitan, 47-27. Dale’s 30 points is a Steele Canyon record – tying him for 4th in Grossmont Conference history, while his rushing total was 3 yards short of the record he set a year ago at Hilltop. Dale scored on runs of 4, 39, 55, 14 and 25 yards.

CHRIS PETERSON, LB, Helix
Peterson, a senior, registered both an interception and a fumble recvoery, powering the Highlanders defense to the shutout of West Hills, 35-0. Peterson also made a hand in a dozen tackles, as Helix extended its shutout streak to six consecutive quarters.

BRANDON GIANDONI, WR, Valhalla
Giandoni helped christen Valhalla's revamped stadium by catching six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns -- including a go-ahead, 70-yarder -- in the Norsemen' 33-3 decision over Hesperia-Sultana.
ANTHONY MORENO, WR/PK, Santana
Moreno led the Sultans to their second straight victory on the school's revamped stadium by hauling in 4 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown against Sweetwater. He also kicked a 22-yard field goal and was 6-for-6 on PATs.
ISAIA OSOIMALO, DE, Helix
Osoimalo powered the Scotties' defense with 11 tackles, as Helix fell just a trick play short of pitching a shutout against visiting Santa Fe Christian.
JOSH SIMMS, QB/PK, Grossmont
In his first career start at quarterback for the Hillers, Simms completed 22-of-29 passes for 261 yards and a score, while rushing 7 times for 38 yards and another TD in topping Monte Vista. He was also 2-for-2 kicking PATs.
WEEK 3
Sept. 14-15
RICO SMITH. RB/KR, Mount Miguel
Smith, a 5-foot-9, 181-pound senior, set one school record and just missed another in pacing the Matadors to their third straight victory. Smith returned two punts for touchdowns -- a third runback to the end zone was nullified by penalty -- including a record 86-yard romp. The other went for 53 yards. For the contest, he scored 26 points, one shy of the school mark.
ANTHONY LARCEVAL, LB, Helix
Larceval, a junior middle linebacker, paced the No. 2 ranked Highlanders with 12 tackles -- 8 of them unassisted -- in backing a solid defensive effort of Helix despite falling to top-ranked Carlsbad, 14-10.
TANNER RUST, QB, El Capitan
Behind Rust, the Vaqueros have made a seamless transition from 2006 quarterback Ryan Lindley, who is now at San Diego State. Against Coronado, Rust established personal bests for total offense (403 yards), pass yardage (386), TD passes (6) and pass completions (21) in a 56-36 shootout victory over the Islanders. The pass yardage total is 3rd-best in school history, behind only Lindley's pair of 417-yard efforts last season.

JAKE CASTILLO, LB, Granite Hills
Castillo helped preserve the Eagles' 10-3 victory over Westview with a late flourish, registering a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery in the final three minutes, then capping the victory with an interception with six seconds remaining. For the contest, Granite Hills allowed just 166 total yards to the Wolverines.
JOSH GOSSMEYER, WR/KR, Monte Vista
Gossmeyer not only returned the game's opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, he also hauled in a scoring pass from Maurice Payne in the Monarchs' 28-0 blanking of host Hilltop.

KEVIN KELLY, WR/RB, El Cajon Valley
Kelly has accounted for all of the Braves' points this season, either by rushing and receiving for touchdowns or kicking PATs and field goals. Included was an 11-yard reception from Isaac Soliz, then kicking the conversion, plus a 25-yard field goal, to give El Cajon Valley an early 10-0 lead on San Ysidro.

Aug. 31-Sept. 1

TILA CASE, RB, El Capitan
Case made the most of his journey to the Islands, burning the defending state champions of Hawai'i for 447 yards in all-purpose yardage. Included was an East County best 8 receptions for 232 yards and three touchdowns, plus a Grossmont Conference record 95-yard punt return in the first quarter -- the third-longest in San Diego CIF history.

LAWRENCE WALKER, RB, Christian
Walker leaped closer to cracking the all-time CIF-San Diego Section career rushing list with only eight touches of the football, yet good for 179 yards (22.4 average) and four touchdowns in the Patriots' first-ever home game at Valhalla High Stadium.

KHALID WATERS, RB/DB, Grossmont
Waters did his damage on both sides of the football in the Foothillers' crushing of Horizon. On offense, Waters rushed for 145 yards and 3 TDs, then returned an interception 35 yards for another score, matching Case and Walker for the East County scoring lead through the first week of the season.

 ANTHONY LARCEVAL, Helix
Larceval, the East County Sports Rookie of the Year, was among the leading tacklers for Helix, holding Oceanside to just 268 yards in total offense in 60 plays during the CIF Division II championship game.
 JOHN FERREIRA, Christian
Ferreira garbbed the game-clinching interception in the end zone with 1:16 remaining, giving the Patriots their seventh section championship after staving off a rally by Francis Parker, 14-10, at Patrick Henry High.

 A.J. CONTI, El Capitan
Conti, a senor wide receiver, set a new CIF-San Diego Section record with 326 yards in receptions in a wild 51-43 semifinal round loss to visiting St. Augustine in Division III play. The yardage was accumulated on 14 receptions, including all four touchdown passes from quarterback Ryan Lindley.
 KYLER DWYER, Christian
Dwyer, a senior who rushes and kicks the football, scored 25 points, including a career-long 42-yard field goal, as pace the Patriots past The Bishop's School, 31-21. For the night, he scored three touchdowns and went 4-for-4 on PATs in addition to his field goal. Dwyer now has 182 points in 12 games for the Patriots (8-3-1). Dwyer's career scoring total stands at 350 points, which ranks him ninth on the All-SDCIF scoring list.

 BLAKE KAHLER, Santana
Kahler, a senior linebacker, was part of 14 tackles, as the Sultans blanked Valley Center in thre second half to rally for a 28-14 victory over the Jaguars. The triumph advances Santana to its second-ever CIF semifinals berth.
 JAIME DALE, Steele Canyon
Dale, a junior running back, rushed for 229 yards and three touchdowns as the Cougars stomped third-seeded El Centro-Central. It was the Cougars second postseason victory in the Imperial Valley in three years. Dale now had 1,404 yards in nine games since being named as a starter.

 RYAN PEARL, Steele Canyon
Pearl, a senior defensive lineman, registered 2.5 sacks among his six tackles, as the Cougars allowed just 80 yards in a 28-0 blanking of University City in the opening round of the CIF Division III playoffs.
 TOMAS KARAGIANES, Valhalla
Karagianes, the Norsemen senior quarterback, tossed a touchdown pass to Mark Coats of 39 yards with 19.1 seconds remaining, then ran for the game-winning 2-point conversion,leading the Norsemen past the host Ramona Bulldogs,25-24, in the CIF Division III opener.
 TREVOR KOLOCHESKI, West Hills
In his first career start (second appearance) at quarterback, Kolocheski overcame a blow to the head to return late in the game to direct the game-winning drive, then registered his second interception of the game in the final seconds to preserve the Wolf Pack's 20-17 triumph over Scripps Ranch in the CIF Division II first-round contest.

 TOMAS KARAGIANES, Valhalla
Karagianes, the Norsemen senior quarterback, accounted for five touchdowns in a 33-23 victory over arch-rival Granite Hills. He rushed for 200 yards and 4 scores on 23 carrues, then passes for another 107 yards and another TD on 8-for-14 accuracy.
 A.J. CONTI, El Capitan
Conti was the Vaqueros' leading receiver with six catches for 101 yards, including a 40-yarder to set of the team's second otuchdown, as El Cap completed the regular season at 10-0, garnering the top seed to the CIF Division III playoffs.

 COLLIN TAYLOR, Santana
Taylor established a Sultan record with 547 yards of total offense ro rally Santana from a 22-point deficit to shock Grossmont, 45-35. Included in Taylor's numbers were 473 passing the yards -- the second-highest total in Grossmont Conference history -- on 29-for-46 accuracy
WEEK 9
Oct. 27-28
 ELLIOT TAYLOR, Mount Miguel
Taylor, the East County rushing leader, needed just 16 carries to rumble for137 yards and two touchdowns to power the Matadors past Valhalla. Mount Miguel rushed for 258 yards, including 92 by Aaron Bryant. Taylor needs just 73 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.
 TORRE BAILEY, Granite Hills
Bailey, a senior linebacker, recovered 3 fumbles to equal a Grossmont Conference record shared by six others, leading the Eagles defense to a shutout of Monte Vista. Bailey's total was only one off the San Diego CIF record set by Imperial's Josh Lopez against Mountain Empire in 1997.
WEEK 8
Oct. 20-21
 JON FORTUNA, Valhalla
Fortuna, a senior linebacker, powered the Norsemen defense with 14 tackles, including three for losses, lifting Valhalla past Monte Vista, 31-12. The team nearly threw a perfect game in the first half, yielding just 22 total yards in offense and nofirst downs in prior to the intermission.

 

SAMMY SNIFF, Christian
Sniff registered a school-record three interceptions -- one shy of the single-game East County record -- to lift the Patriots defense in a shutout of Army-Navy Academy. Sniff also registered 89 yards in runbacks on his picks, while teammate KURT METCALFE raced 45 yards for a touchdown with his interception to help Christian erase the Warriors passing game.

WEEK 7
Oct. 12-14
 TONY MINNIFIELD, Steele Canyon
Minnifield, a two-way performer for the Cougars, made a dramatic touchdown catch for a 22-yard score in the first period, then garnered an interception in the second half, powering Steele Canyon to a 31-7 victory over Valhalla on Thursday Night Football, allowing the school to claim the inaugural Jamacha Helmet perpetual award.

 

ERIC FORNEY, Helix
Forney became the third East County running back to surpass 200 yards rushing in a single game, collecting 205 yards on 22 carries, lifting the Highlanders to a 43-14 pasting of Granite Hills to open Grossmont South League play. Included were three touchdown runs, including a 60-yarder on the game's opening play from scrimmage. Forney later added TD rushes of 15 and 13 yards.

 

ADAM DENICK, El Capitan
Denick, who used to play both ways, definitely was focused in his first assignment as a starting linebacker with any duties on offense. Denick paced the Vaqueros with 12 tackles, including a sack, to limit West Hills to just a single touchdown in a 13-6 victory in the teams' Grossmont North League opener.

Oct. 5-7
 SAMATRE JONES, Mount Miguel
Jones, a junior free safety, led the Matadors defense in their 21-20 upset victory over West Hills. Jones paced the team with 11 tackles plus an interception. He also broke up a pass, as Mount Miguel's secondary limited the Wolf Pack to just 2 completions in 11 attempts.

 

COLLIN TAYLOR, Santana
Taylor, the Sultans' senior quarterback, generated 297 yards and 3 touchdowns despite falling to Valhalla,49-35. Taylor completed 19-of-33 passes for 206 yards, including scoring strikes to JON TIPPIN (4 yards) and KYLE ROMERO (4 yards).

WEEK 5
Sept. 29-30
 JAMIE DALE, Steele Canyon
Dale, in his first career start at tailback, established a school record with 264 rushing yards on 25 carries, including three touchdowns, to power the Cougars past host Hilltop, 33-17. Dale scored on runs of 59, 14, and 17 yards as the Cougars registered a season scoring high.
 JOEY SUTHERLAND, Granite Hills
Sutherland rushed for 125 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including the game-tieing score in the fourth quarter, helping the Eagles upset No.8 West Hills,17-14, at Valley Stadium. It was the first Granite Hills victory over the Wolf Pack since 1999.
 

KIANIE BROOKS, El Cajon Valley
Brooks rushed 20 times for a game-high 143 yards, including an important scramble for the go-ahead score, leading the Braves past visiting Calexico., 21-14. The two-way performer also passed for a score while at quarterback, then clinched the triumph with an interception in the end zone in the game'sclosing moments while at safety.

Sept. 21-23
 TOMMY TOWNS, El Capitan
El Capitan linebacker TOMMY TOWNS, the East County's undisputed tackling leader, powered the 4th-ranked Vaqueros to a shocking shutout of Valhalla, which had been averaging more than 34 points per game. Towns registered 17 stops, including a quarterback sack, in a 31-0 triumph.
 

RALEIGH SEVIER, West Hills
Sevier, one of the most steady performers in the Grossmont Conference, did a little bit of everything for the 9th-ranked Wolf Pack. Sevier rushed 17 times for 124 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 41-yarder, in a 31-3 pasting of Monte Vista. He also caught an important first down pass which kept a drive alive, leading to a touchdown.

WEEK 3
Sept. 14-15
 LANDON TURLEY, Granite Hills
Turley terrorized San Diego quarterback Luis Godoy, sacking the San Diego High senior for a Granite Hills record 6½ times. to lead the Eagles to a 38-0 pasting of the Cavers at Valley Stadium. The shutout was the Eagles' first since 1999.
 RYAN LINDLEY, El Capitan
In a battle of undefeated, Top 10 teams, Lindley, a senior, threw for a school-record 417 yards as the Vaqueros rolled up 656 total yards -- the second-highest total in East County history, to power No. 8 El Capitan past No. 4 Poway before a Thursday night television audience at Wendall Cutting Field.
WEEK 2
Sept. 8
 KYLER DWYER, Christian
Dwyer accounted for 208 all-purpose yards and scored 19 points to propel Christian past Santana. The senior rushed for a team-high 124 yards and a score, hauled in an 11-yard TD pass, then returned a kickoff 73 yards to setup another score. In addition, he kicked a 31-yard field and four PATs. Meanwhile, Patriots teammate LAWRENCE WALKER added 82 rushing yards and a touchdown, while also returning a kickoff 68 yards for another score.
 BRANDON McCLINTIC, Valhalla
McClintic registered five of nine sacks recorded by the Norsemen -- JON PARKS had the other four -- as the Norsemen defense forced three turnovers in the fourth period before staving off Chula Vista's final attempt to score at the goalline on the game's final play.
WEEK 1
Aug. 31-Sept. 1
ARLIN TAYLOR, Steele Canyon
Senior safety ARLIN TAYLOR returned two fumbles for touchdowns and made 10 tackles to lead Steele Canyon past Cathedral, 20-13, in the Cougars' first-ever on-campus home game.

JONATHAN TIPPIN, Santana
Tippin, a senior, scored a Santana record 29 points as the Sultans overcame an early deficit to dump Patrick Henry, Tippin scored on passes of 15, 15, 13 and 55 yards from COLLIN TAYLOR in the middle two quarters, then coverted all five of his PATs to break the old mark of 24 points established by six Sultans.
