Scotties complete season on high
Storm over El Capitan in GCT for third place

LAKESIDE (5-8-11) — Shaking off the disappointment of a near upset victory over the top seeds in the Grossmont Conference Tournament, the Helix Highlanders again proved dominant in their strong, late-season run.

On Saturday (May 7), the Scotties defense limited host El Capitan to just four total shots in the first half, while the offense went 3-for-3 with the man advantage, racing to a huge lead en route to an 11-5 triumph in the GCT third-place match at Wendell Cutting Field.

"We just stayed in front of our guy and moved our feet," said Helix defender CHARLES COOPER. "As long as we kept our body in front, they couldn't get many shots."

When El Capitan was able to release a shot, Highlanders goalie SAM STOWE was there to make the stop. Included were a pair of point-blank rejections in front of the crease by Stowe in the second half to maintain the lead, part of his game total of 16 saves.

Meanwhile, forward ALEX LECKO tallied twice while a man up in the first half, then completed his hat trick with the opening goal of the second half for an 8-3 advantage.

Lecko's final two goals were converted off passes by TYLER DENNIS, who also registered a hat trick plus four assists for a dominating 7-point outing to singularly out-scoring the Vaqueros.

Many of Dennis' points came on similar plays, making passes behind the goal while waiting for a mistake by the defense.

"We just kept moving the ball while waiting for the defense to break down," noted Dennis. "They had the same people guarding us the same way the entire game. I don't know what they were thinking, except that I don't think they were thinking."

Without any variation in coverage, Dennis sped past his taller defender all contest, working around both sides of the goal. Dennis then either shot the ball or flung a short pass which led directly to a shot.

Leading 3-2 after the first quarter, Dennis fed DENNY CRENSHAW and Lecko for consecutive goals. Dennis later made it 6-3 on the power play, then Lecko temporarily took control behind the ball, finding a breaking PETER BRANDT for the score and a 7-3 advantage at the intermission.

Helix then outscored El Capitan, 3-0, in the third period, despite the Vaqueros' attempt to open up the offense by taking nine shots.

Crenshaw and Brandt finished with two goals each, while midfielder CORY LITZAU added another, accepting a pass from JOSH FORBES after Crenshaw started a fast break with a steal near midfield.

The victory avenged a 6-5 setback to El Capitan back on Apr. 12.

Late goal ruins stoic Highlanders effort
Grossmont survives, 5-4, in GCT semifinals

EL CAJON (5-6-11) — Utilizing a conservative approach on offense, Helix High was on the verge of climbing the mountain when PETER BRANDT scored with 3:22 remaining, giving the Highlanders an improbable 4-3 lead on regular season champion Grossmont during the Grossmont Conference Tournament boys lacrosse semifinals.

But a breakdown on defense opened the way for the Foothillers to avoid the upset, finding the net twice down the stretch to upend their archrivals in a 5-4 decision Thursday (May 5) at Lt. Thomas M. Adams Memorial Field.

Neither unusual nor the norm, Helix attempted to clear the ball from its defensive zone with the goalie joining the long poles. However, when a simple pass into the attack side of midfield was knocked down for a turnover by Grossmont's Thomas Ripberger, the Hillers attacker collected the loose ball and scored from 25 yards out into the empty net with 2:13 left.

The momentum switch later saw senior Dustin Spencer-Bacon collect the game-winning goal with 35 seconds to go.

"That was the way we're supposed to play during the last two minutes," said Spencer-Bacon, who is headed for Hofstra. "Helix played well because they had nothing to lose, so they just let it go."

The result was a Helix rally from a 3-1 deficit midway through the second quarter by maintaining possession. The Highlanders’ defense was also solid in front of goalie SAM STOWE, who made several keys stops to blank Grossmont for more than two quarters, aided on several blocked shots by CHARLES COOPER, JUAN CARLOS MALDONADO and SEAN MUNRO.

All three got in front of Grossmont shots during a 15-second span late in the fourth quarter, while Brandt scored the go-ahead goal on the next possession. The ball went to ALEX LECKO behind the Hillers goal, running along the back line looking for an opening.

Lecko found an open winger in GAGE FAULKNER, who fed Brandt in front of the goal. His shot soared above the keepers' shoulder for the Scotties' first lead of the second half.

Lecko also scored from the outside to open the scoring before Grossmont tallied three straight, only to be answered on a JOSH FORBES goal to close the first half. After a scoreless third quarter, TYLER DENNIS scored for Helix to tie the contest.

While top-seeded Grossmont advances to host the GCT title game against No. 2 seed Granite Hills, Helix will play in the third place contest at El Capitan . Both will be held Saturday (May 7) at 6 p.m.

Scotties stops Monte Vista in GCT opener

LA MESA (5-1-11) — Extending the team's shutout streak to well over six quarters, Helix High dominated Monte Vista from start to finish in Saturday's (Apr. 30) opening round of the Grossmont Conference Tournament, breezing to an 11-5 triumph at Jim Arnaiz Field.

Following a shutout of Santana to close the regular season, the Highlanders blanked the Monarchs in the first half to take a 5-0 lead at the intermission. Five different players scored goals, including ALEX LECKO, who registered a goal and two assists to jump-start the offense to a 3-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, senior goalie SAM STOWE was rarely tested throughout, allowing the Scotties to advance to Thursday's (May 5) tournament semifinals against 9th-ranked Grossmont.

"This one was for all the seniors who were playing their last game at Helix," said Stowe, who selected to attend Cal-Berkeley over UCLA and Cal Poly. "It all came down to giving everything they got."

TYLER DENNIS again shared scoring honors, matching CORY LITZAU by registering a hat trick. Stowe recorded 14 saves for the victory.

"We've been building since our senior year to get to this point," noted Dennis, a 4-year varsity performer. "Most of us have only been playing since our freshman year, but now we do camps, play indoors, and some of us are on the Great Western (club) program."

"Now we're closing the gap on the top teams -- it's been a great senior year."

Helix next meets a Foothillers squad which captured the regular season title. The game will be played Thursday (May 5) at Lt. Thomas M. Adams Field at Grossmont, starting at 7 p.m.

After Lecko scored 10 minutes into the contest, he assisted on tallies by PETER BRANDT and Dennis. Later, GAGE FAULKNER and Litzau hit the net to mount a 5-goal cushion to steamroll Monte Vista in the first half.

Helix — Goals: Alex Lecko 3, Tyler Dennis 3, Cory Litzau 2, Gage Faulkner 1, Denny Crenshaw 1, Peter Brandt 1. Assists: Alex Lecko 2, Josh Forbes 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 14.

Helix lacrosse finds academic success, too
Prepare for GCT with second shutout of Santana

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (4-27-11) — Perhaps more impressive than Helix High's second shutout of the season over Santana was a list announced at halftime on the future education plans for several of the Highlanders' seniors.

A pair will advance to UC Berkeley. Others are header to Pacific, CSU Monterey Bay and, of course, San Diego State, which could make the Scotties one of the top academic sports teams in East County.

However, the only thing on the Scotties' collective minds will be Saturday's (Apr. 30) opening round of the Grossmont Conference Tournament, when they host Monte Vista at 7 p.m. on Jim Arnaiz Field.

"It's a team we've beaten before, so we will be confident going into the game," said junior DENNY CRENSHAW, considered the top defender on the Helix roster. "Hopefully, we will be able to make a long playoff run."

Crenshaw and the rest of the long poles made life easy for Helix goalie SAM STOWE, who only needed to make a handful of saves to blank the Sultans, 15-0, in Tuesday's (Apr. 26) regular season finale.

Once again, the offense ran through attacker TYLER DENNIS, who collected four goals in the first period alone to ignite the romp, while senior ALEX LECKO scored three times.

"Ball possesion is key for us," noted Lecko, who will study engineering at Pacific this fall. "We need to keep being successful on faceoffs, while also winning a majority of ground balls and get to most 50-50 balls."

By finishing in the middle of the Grossmont Conference standings, Helix will avoid top-seeded Grossmont and regular season runner-up Granite Hills until at least the semifinals should they get past Monte Vista.

"We stayed close with Granite Hills so we believe we'll do better if we play them again," Lecko added.

After defeating Santana 12-0 earlier in the season in a non-league game, this time, the Scotties mounted a 13-0 advantage by the half after six different players registered goals.

Helix — Goals: Tyler Dennis 4, Alex Lecko 3, Peter Brandt 2, Cory Litzau 2, Nicholai Bolam 1, Parker Mossman 1, Josh Forbes 1, Matt Vellone 1. Assists: Dennis 5, Bolam 1, Denny Crenshaw 1, Mossman 1, Brandt 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 5.

Scotties again conquer the Q's

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (4-20-11) — In a repeat performance, the Helix Highlanders bolted to a quick lead to crunch the Serra Conquistadors, this time by a 13-1 count in Tuesday's (Apr. 19) non-league boys lacrosse match at Jim Arnaiz Field.

The Scotties posted five goals before anyone in the stands watching could get situated, similar to last week's first game in the home-and-home series, when Helix mounted an 8-0 first-quarter lead.

TYLER DENNIS tallied two of the early goals, followed by scores from CORY LITZAU, GAGE FAULKNER and then a surprising tally from MATT VELLONE. The long-pole defenseman carried the ball from the back end, then proceeded all the way to the Serra goal.

Later, Helix goalie SAM STOWE registered an unusual goal on what was credited as a shot from in front of his own goal. Stowe fired a length-of-the-field pass which carried to the Serra goal, but when the Conquistadors goalie fumbled the ball, it rolled into the net to close the first half and give the Scotties a 7-0 advantage.

Helix completes the regular season at home against Santana next Tuesday (Apr. 26) before entering the Grossmont Conference Tournament, where the Scotties will need to capture at least one game to gain a shot at gaining a SDCIF postseason berth.

Helix — Goals: Tyler Dennis 2, Cory Litzau 2, Peter Brandt 2, Alex Lecko 2, Matt Vellone 2, Gage Faulkner 1, Nicholai Bolam 1, Sam Stowe 1. Assists: Cory Litzau 2, Alex Lecko 2, Forbes 1, Gage Faulkner 2, Tyler Dennis 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 9.

Helix joins the Q-club

© East County Sports.com
TIERRASANTA (4-15-11) — It was another fast start for the Helix Highlanders, but this time the Scotties made the early lead stand up.

Heix pounded the goalie from Serra High for a season-best eight goals in the opening period, romping past the host Conquistadors, 11-3, in Thursday's (Apr. 14) non-league contest.

Seven different players scored to dominate the period, including the first goal of the season by Helix goalie SAM STOWE, who grabbed possession near his net then ran the length of the field. When no member of the Q-Dawgs picked him up, Stowe kept running and fired a low shot past the startled defense.

Stowe, when remaining in his goal crease, also registered six saves to garner the victory over the Q's.

Helix later added three goals in the second period for an 11-3 halftime lead, with both sides clearing the benches in a scoreless second half.

For the Scotties, PETER BRANDT, TYLER DENNIS and ALEX LECKO scored twice, while Dennis also collected three assists for a 5-point night.

The teams complete a home-and-home series at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Apr. 19) at Helix. The Scotties then entertain Santana on Tuesday (Apr. 26) to cap the regular season for both Senior Night and the annual Lacrosse Night in La Mesa promotion.

Helix — Goals: Peter Brandt 2, Tyler Dennis 2, Alex Lecko 2, Denning Crenshaw 1, Josh Forbes 1, Cory Litzau 1, Parker Mossman 1, Sam Stowe 1. Assists: Dennis 3. Saves: S. Stowe 6.

El Capitan rallies past Helix

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (4-13-11) — A fast, 3-goal outburst in the first quarter seemed to send a message that Helix High was poised for another Grossmont Conference boys lacrosse victory.

However, El Capitan turned on the defense over the final three quarters, taking a mild upset in Tuesday's (Apr. 12) 6-5 decision over the Highlanders at Jim Arnaiz Field.

JOSH FORBES, TYLER DENNIS, and PETER BRANDT scored early for the Scotties before the Vaqueros turned the game around. The lone second-half goal for Helix was netted by ALEX LECKO, giving the hosts a 5-4 lead with three minutes remaining.

El Cap then completed the comeback by scoring on its next possession, then claimed the game-winning goal with 31 second remaining.

Next up for Helix is a home-and-home series with Serra, starting Thursday in Tierrasanta.

Helix — Goals: Peter Brandt, Josh Forbes, Tyler Dennis, Alex Lecko. Assists: Gage Faulkner, Nicolai Bolam, Tyler Dennis. Saves: Sam Stowe 10.

Helix beats the rain, Monte Vista

© East County Sports.com
SPRING VALLEY (4-8-11) — Just like waiting for the rain, once the clouds opened it poured. And so did the offense for the Helix High lacrosse team.

Without any scoring for the opening six minutes of Thursday's (Apr. 7) Grossmont Conference contest, the Highlanders erupted for three goals in a 2-minute span, racing to a 9-4 road triumph over Monte Vista at Monarch Stadium.

CORY LITZAU, TYLER DENNIS and PETER BRANDT tallied to carry a 3-0 lead into the second quarter, but after Monta Vista answered with a pair of goals, Helix put away the victory early when Brandt, Litzau, and ALEX LECKO found the next for a 6-2 halftime cushion.

During the second-half rainstorm, much of the offense came off turnovers. Included was a steal by PARKER MOSSMAN, who carried the ball from midfield into an unassisted goal. NICOLAI BOLAM also scored for Helix, which won its second straight game as Scotties goalie SAM STOWE notched nine saves.

Helix – Goals: Cory Litzau 2, Peter Brandt 2, Parker Mossman 2, Tyler Dennis 1, Alex Lecko 1, Nicholai Bolam 1. Assists: Dennis 3. Lecko 2, Gage Faulkner 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 9.

Scotties storm past Valhalla

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-6-11) — Falling to the top pair of teams in the Grossmont Conference is one thing, but when the Helix Highlanders quickly trailed Valhalla in Tuesday's (Apr. 5) boys lacrosse match, nerves were becoming twitched.

However, all would end well when the Scotties transformed a 2-0 deficit into a 7-3 halftime cushion, taking out the host Norsemen, 14-5.

TYLER DENNIS fueled the surge of offense for Helix. Following a pair of goals, Dennis assisted on seven consecutive goals for the Highlanders, finishing with eight helpers on the night.

CORY LITZAU and DENNING CRENSHAW led the possession battle, winning on 70 percent of all faceoffs to keep the ball away from the Norsemen. And when Valhalla had the ball, Helix goalie SAM STOWE stopped opposing shots at a near-50 percent clip.

Helix caps a 3-game roadtrip to open the conference schedule with a Thursday (Apr. 7) match at Monte Vista, starting at 7 p.m.

No information was reported by Valhalla .

Helix – Goals: Peter Brandt 3, Tyler Dennis 2, Alex Lecko 2, Cory Litzau 2, Parker Mossman 2, Denning Crenshaw 1, Gage Faulkner 1, Josh Forbes 1. Assists: Dennis 8, Gage Faulkner 2, Brandt 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 4.

Punchless power play dooms Helix

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-2-11) — Helix High failed to convert during a mammoth, 3-minute man-advantage sequence, as Granite Hills gained the momentum to score seven of the next eight goals in Friday's (Apr. 1) 9-7 decision in Grossmont Conference boys lacrosse action at Valley Stadium.

The Eagles drew a major penalty to play short for 180 seconds – most infractions force a team to play short-handed for 30 or 60 seconds – but when they got even, the hosts turned a 3-1 deficit into an 8-4 advantage through three quarters.

Helix' early lead saw PETER BRANDT scored twice, while DENNING CRENSHAW adding another to bolt in front by two goals in the first period.

The Scotties made things interesting late with goals by GAGE FAULKNER and ALEX LECKO, then JOSH FORBES tallied an outside ripper before time ran out.

Granite Hills will go on to meet Grossmont for the conference's regular season title. The loser in that match-up will probably gain a rematch with Helix in the semifinals of the Grossmont Conference playoffs.

No information was reported by Granite Hills.

Helix — Goals: Peter Brandt 2, Denning Crenshaw 1, Tyler Dennis 1, Alex Lecko 1, Josh Forbes 1, Gage Faulkner 1. Assists: Lecko 1, Dennis 1.

Hillers halt Helix

LA MESA (3-30-11) — In a match-up between two of the top three teams in the Grossmont Conference, the Helix Highlanders stayed even with crosstown rival Grossmont for one quarter, but the visiting Foothillers then pulled away in Tuesday's (Mar. 29) comfortable 10-4 decision at Jim Arnaiz Field.

JOSH FORBES scored late in the first period to tie the game for Helix (5-3, 0-1 GC), but Grossmont (5-2, 1-0) tallied four unanswered goals in the second period for a 5-1 halftime lead, then four more in the third quarter to push the margin to 9-1.

For the Scotties, PETER BRANDT posted a pair of goals in the fourth period, while GAVIN FAULKNER added another.

LA MESA (3-27-11) — PETER BRANDT registered a hat trick before the completion of the opening quarter, when Helix mounted a 6-0 lead en route to a 14-0 dismantling of visiting Bonita Vista in Saturday's (Mar. 26) non-league boys lacrosse match at Jim Arnaiz Field.

Brandt would finish with four goals, while TYLER DENNIS finished with three goals and four assists for a season-best seven points for the Scotties (5-2), which snapped a mild 2-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, the FAULKNER brothers – GAGE (3) and GAVIN (2) – combined for five assists.

No Rocky Mountain High for Helix

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (3-22-11) — For the second straight outing, the Helix High boys lacrosse team allowed a late lead to slip away, this time allowing Littleton (Colo.) to escape with Monday's (Mar. 21) 5-4 verdict at Jim Arnaiz Field. The contest was the home opener for the Highlanders (4-2 overall).

The visiting Lions, the 17th-ranked team in Colorado, bolted back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 1-goal lead. Although Helix' TYLER DENNIS would tally an equalizer to get the Scotties even, Littleton would score on a quick change of possession whistle catching the defense off balance.

Helix coaches report that goalie SAM STOWE, who registered six saves, was strong in his return from a 1-game absence.

Littleton, which received a pair of goals by Price Miller, continues its spring break roadtrip with contests against Serra and The Bishop's. The Scotties return to action at home to Chula Vista , this Saturday (Mar. 26) starting at noon.

Helix – Goals: Tyler Dennis 2, Denning Crenshaw 1, Gage Faulkner 1. Assists: none. Saves: Sam Stowe 6.

Scotties win streak snapped in overtime

RANCHO PENASQUITOS (3-19-11) — Helix High attacker PETER BRANDT scored a team season-high six goals, but the Highlanders allowed a late, 4-goal lead to disappear in falling to host Mt. Carmel , 11-10 in overtime, Friday (Mar. 18) at Sundevil Stadium.

Brandt's final goal boosted the Scotties to a 10-6 advantage, but Mt. Carmel scored four times to extend the contest. Helix gained several good looks in overtime, but failed to convert, with the Sundevils coming back on their next possession to win it and end Helix' season-opening, 4-game winning streak.

Brandt scored four of his goals in the third period, then TYLER DENNIS added another marker to break open a close contest. Reserve goalie JONATHAN FRENCH made six saves in the cage for Helix (4-1).

Helix – Goals: Brandt 6, Litzau 1, Crenshaw 1, Gavin Faulkner 1, Tyler Dennis 1. Assists: Dennis 4, Lecko 2, Gage Faulkner 1. Saves: French 6.

French posts rare shutout in Helix win

SANTEE (3-16-11) — Helix High goalkeeper JONATHAN FRENCH posted his first career shutout Tuesday (Mar. 15), backstopping the Highlanders to a 12-0 pasting of host Santana a non-league game at Santee Community Stadium.

French needed to face just a handful of shots – the Sultans' initial go-at-goal didn't occur until just 2:30 remained in the first quarter – helping the Scotties remain East County's lone undefeated side at 4-0 overall.

Helix mounted a quick 4-0 lead on first-period goals by Parker Mossman, Gavin Faulkner, Cory Litzau and Denning Crenshaw. The lead then doubled to 8-0 by the half behind a pair of Peter Brandt goals, plus single markers by Tyler Dennis and defender Matt Vellone on a long clear.

Scotties nip Fallbrook in overtime opener

© East County Sports.com
FALLBROOK (3-10-11) — Helix High opened the boys lacrosse season with the longest roadtrip possible among San Diego County schools, staving off a late Fallbrook rally to nip the Warriors, 9-8, in overtime Wednesday (Mar. 9).

The Scotties mounted an early 3-0 lead, before Fallbrook finally tied it in the final 20 second of regulation before STEVEN STUHLER scored the game-winner moments after Scotties goalie SAM STOWE made a big save on the opening Warriors possesion after the hosts won the faceoff in the first extra period.

Hopping off the bus after the long drive, Helix jumped to a quick 3-0 advantage on goals by PETER BRANDT, ALEX LECKO and DENNING CRENSHAW.

Crenshaw, a long pole, scored off a long clear and brought it all the way down the field for an exciting goal. Brandt added a secnd goal, then TYLER DENNIS scored off a rebound for a 5-3 second-quarter lead.

However, Fallbrook also scored in the final moments of the first half to make it 5-5 at the intermission.

Helix again posted a 2-goal lead on tallies by Crenshaw, Dennis and Lecko.

The Highlanders continues their road trip Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Chula Vista, then Friday meeting host Lincoln at 5 p.m.

Helix – Goals: Peter Brandt 2, Denning Crenshaw 2, Tyler Dennis 2, Alex Lecko 2, Steven Stuhler 1. Saves: Sam Stowe 10.
