Leaf and the best of the boys basketball senior class tips off at 7 p.m. following the duel between East County’s girls elite which begins at 5 p.m.

Show-stopper Leaf, the all-time San Diego CIF section leader with 3,318 points as a four-year starter for the Knights, will lineup with the Grossmont Hills League standouts.

Christian High standouts, LUIZ BIDART and ZSOLT LAKOSA, who were denied playoff participation due to a clerical snafu, will get a final chance to shine in front of the home folks as members of the GHL squad.

Others who figure to make an impact in the boys game are GHL Player of the Year ANDRE LEWIS, Valhalla ’s KYLE KRIEBEL and Grossmont’s JAKE HAAR.

On the flip side, four members of Mount Miguel ’s SDCIF Section III champion Matadors will anchor the Grossmont Valley League All-Stars with circuit player of the year A.J. STANFORD and his high-scoring teammate HARRY BRAZELTON leading the way.

Monte Vista’s TONY JACKSON and Santana JESSE VARGAS also figure to make an impact for the GVL team as does El Capitan ’s MICHAEL OVERSON.

Valhalla’s KEITH JACKSON will coach the Grossmont Hills crew, while El Cajon Valley’s MARTY ELLIS will direct the Grossmont Valley boys.

In last year’s game, which were conducted under a North-South format, the Grossmont South won, 97-85.

GIRLS GALAXY
Four starters from Mount Miguel’s 26-7 SDCIF Division III championship unit headline the girls all-start tilt. Player of the Year YVONTE NEAL is at the forefront.

Five members of SDCIF Division II champion West Hills will lead the Grossmont Hills League roster to be co-coached by Grossmont’s MEGAN LONG and Steele Canyon’s PENNY SMITH.

East County scoring leader and the GHL Player of the Year SABRINA JIMENEZ with a 17.2 average, figures to light up the sky for her side.

SHERIKA MILLER and KIM CLARK will represent West Hills in what should be a free-wheeling contest.

In last year’s East County girls all-star encounter, the Grossmont South prevailed 77-71.

Tickets will be sold at the door. Adults are $6, and students are $4.

SPRING VALLEY (3-21-09) — The Grossmont North put up a bona fide challenge to upend the Grossmont South for the first time ever in Friday night’s (Mar. 20) East County Sports.com Senior All-Stars game at Mount Miguel High, but the South still won, 77-71.

The game was tied at 36-all by halftime. Neither team led by more than six points in the 3rd quarter.

It was only a 2-point game with four minutes remaining, but SINOI LEASAU of Helix scored 7 of her 18 points down the stretch to allow the South to reign again, 77-71.

Mount Miguel’s DANESIA WILLIAMSON, who was awarded the Most Valuable Player with 29 points, 7 assists and 3 steals, helped Leasau thwart the North comeback. Williamson made 9 of 20 shots from the floor including 4 treys. She, like Leasau, was 7 for 8 from the free throw line.

The South, which led from start to finish, recorded 31 steals. DEMOND “Red” NARCISSE record 9 thefts and Helix teammate KAREEM ABUKAR swiped 6 passes. Abukar, the Highlanders’ point guard and Grossmont South League Player of the Year, added 16 points.

Asaciovas, Mikutis shine, but South
claims annual Senior Showcase, 99-96

© East County Sports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO (3-24-07) – Two Christian High seniors – guard ANDRUIS MIKUTIUS and forward VIKTOR ASACIOVAS – dominated the 9th annual East County Senior Showcase all-star basketball festivities Friday (Mar. 23) at Cuyamaca College.
Mikutis captured both the slam dunk and 3-point shooting competition, then directed the North Stars back from a 15-point deficit to take a late lead. However, the South rallied in the final minutes to claim a narrow 99-96 decision.
The event was hosted by Cuyamaca College head basketball coach ROB WOJTKOWSKI and sponsored by East County Sports.com.
Helix guard LAWRENCE HURDLE tallied a game-high 28 points for the South, scoring the majority of his points in the first half to claim a double-digit lead. But when the reserves took over, the North fought back, as Asaciovas collected a team-best 26 points, while Mikutis added 23.
However, a quartet of Helix Highlanders -- ERIC FORNEY, DORIAN STATON, BRANDON FOUNTAIN and Hurdle – returned to the floor to help the South eliminate the North's 7-point advantage over the final five minutes.
JAMAR RANSOME of Monte Vista poured in 20 points for the South, while COURTNEY WRATHER of Mount Miguel added 14,
The leading Grossmont Conference scorer for the North was JOHN VASQUEZ of Santana, who collected 13 points, including a trio of 3-point shots, while North League Player of the Year PETER GILSON of West Hills had 11.
Mikutis won the 3-point shooting competition by defeating Hurdle in the final round.
In the dunk competition, Asaciovas and teammate Mikutis, East County's second-leading scorer this past season, each recorded identical scores in the final round, so a tiebreaker was needed. But when a missed shot by Asaciovas hit the back of the rim and bounded long to center court, Mikutis playfully collected the loose ball and fired a halfcourt shot to the opposite basket.
Swish! -- and the game director declared Mikutis the victor to the delight of several hundred East County basketball fans.

South again tops North,
but with a foreign accent

East County Sports.com
RANCHO SAN DIEGO (3-19-06) -- It definitely makes sense.

The most experienced of all East County seniors earned player of the game laurels, as Christian High's PAUL IVANAUSKAS scored eights points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and one block Saturday (Mar. 18), leading the South to a 100-94 decision over the North in the annual East County All-Star basketball game, held at Cuyamaca College.

Ivanauskas, one of three players from Lithuania to play for the Patriots this past season, marveled the crowd -- one of the largest in event history -- with an array of behind-the-back passes for easy layins by his teammates, helping the South build a 16-point lead.

"I sure would like to play for a Division I school," said Ivanauskas, who is being looked at (but no offers yet) by nationally-ranked Gonzaga, among other schools. "I'm also thinking about staying and becoming an American citizen, but I would also like to go home, too."

KEITH WILLIAMS of Valhalla led the South Stars with 15 points, including nine in the first half to mount a 57-48 lead at the intermission.

However, the North charged back in the final minutes to close within 98-94 with 1:04 remaining on a 3-ball by RICKY MICHELMORE of Santana, who was tabbed his team's player of the game by the media. Michelmore finished with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.

"It was a lot of fun playing with guys who were on the other team for the last 5-or-6 years," noted Michelmore, who announced he will play for Chapman University next season. "They're not enemies anymore."

Michelmore scored seven points over the ballgame's final six minutes. However, EMORY MITCHELL of Steele Canyon scored on a putback on the next possession to put the victory away. Michelmore nailed five 3-pointers.

Santana's JON HERNANDEZ pitched in 15 points on 7-for-7 shooting for the North, while Christian's COLIN McDONALD knocked down 12 points for the South on 7-for-8 shooting. West Hills guard KYLE HAMANN added 10 points for the North.

The North roster consisted of players from the Grossmont North League, but this year, players from Christian High were placed on the South, which was otherwise composed of Grossmont South League seniors.

However, a notable absentee was NICK TAYLOR of Granite Hills, the East County player of the year. Missing from the North was first-team, All-East County selection CORY BROWN of El Capitan. Both players of the year for their respective leagues, have prior engagements for future all-star games.

RANCHO SAN DIEGO -- In an atypical all-star game, a team consisting of Grossmont South League seniors roared to an early lead, waltzing to an easy 108-77 victory at the 7th annual East County Senior All-Star game, hosted by Cuyamaca College.
The divergence began early when the South scored 20 of the game's opening 23 points -- including the first 13 straight -- when KURTIS SMITH of Granite Hills scored 10 of his game-high 20 points. Smith went on to share game MVP honors with Helix's LANCE HURDLE, who also captured the slam dunk competition at halftime.
"I could always do it," said Smith about his shooting. "I finally got a chance to show it."
Smith, who plans to play for Cuyamaca next season, also grabbed 9 rebounds, one shy of the game-high 10 boards grabbed by Steele Canyon's JASON BEAUCHAMP of the South.
Hurdle edged out FRANK COLLINS of El Cajon Valley and BRANDYN HARVEY of Monte Vista in the slam competition. However, his best effort came in the second half of the game, when Baxter placed the ball off the backboard while Hurdle drove the lane, grabbing the carom high above the rim and finishing to the delight of the more than 500 fans at the exhibition.
The feat was repeated by Hurdle a few minutes later on a pass from Monte Vista's CLINTON SNYDER, who plans to play football at Stanford next season.
"It was great, but I still can't compare myself to any of the great players in the past like Bill Walton," said Hurdle. "He was an All-American, a gold medal winner and won a championship in the NBA. I still have to work hard if I ever want to get anywhere near that."
GEORGE CUNNINGHAM of Steele Canyon matched Smith with 20 points, while Harvey was the leading playmaker with eight assists.
The North, which consisted of players from the Grossmont North League and Christian High, went 5:26 without scoring until CASEY RUMMEL of Grossmont connected on a 3-point shot. However, Smith hit his next three shots for a 20-3 lead before the North scored again.
MATTHEW GILSON of West Hills was the team MVP for the North with 14 points, while Wolf Pack teammate QUENTIN LONDON was the only other North players to score in double figures with 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting, including a a pair of 3-balls.
Prior to the contest, DAVID BAXTER of Granite Hills captured the 3-point shooting contest, placing first in all three rounds, including a 6-3 decision over Williams in the final.

6th Annual EAST COUNTY SENIOR ALL-STAR BASKETBALL GAME

EL CAJON - Mount Miguel forward J.R. GRIFFIN and Helix guard MARLON PIERCE took honors at individuals contests, then teamed up to pace a collection of seniors from the Grossmont South League past a squad from the Grossmont North League, 106-88, in the 6th annual East County Senior All-star Game, hosted Friday (Apr. 23) at Cuyamaca College.Griffin, who captured the slam dunk competition at halftime, scored a game-high 21 points, including eight
when the South rolled up 32 points in the third quarter to mount an 84-67 advantage.Meanwhile, Pierce, one of four players from the South scoring in double figures, collected 10 points and seven assists. He earlier captured the 3-point shooting contest, nipping COREY ROBINSON of Santana in the final.Griffin claimed a nearly insurmountable lead during the slam prelims with a near-perfect 29.5-point effort, then punctuated the victory with a two-handed, behind-the-head dunk for an additional 29 points, outdistancing Monte Vista's BOBBY PURVEY in the final. However, Purvey ignited the South in the first period with an in-game slam, rising well above the basket to grab an offensive rebound and throwing the ball back down to break open the contest to claim the lead for keeps. JANSSEN BARBER of Mount Miguel added 18 points, while DAVID
JONES of Helix had 16.Griffin and Pierce shared game MVP laurels for the South, as selected by the media, while TYLER VICKERS of Grossmont earned North League honors after collecting team-highs of 14 points and 7 rebounds. The North also received 13 points each from LEVI KIPP of West Hills and BRYAN WICKENS of Santana, while LYONELL DOUGLAS of Grossmont and JESSE LEATHERMAN of El Capitan poured home 10 points each.

El Capitan's Keller rallies North, finishes with 25 points

ECS. com staff report
EL CAJON - C.J. Zimmerlink of West Hills, along with Robbie Keller and Josh Fisher of El Capitan led the Grossmont North to a come-from-behind 83-79 victory over the Grossmont South in Friday's (March 30) East County Senior All-Stars Game at Cuyamaca College.Keller and Zimmerlink canned two free throws each in the final 10 seconds to give the North the nod.Trailing 73-60 with 4:13 to play, Fisher scored seven points to lead the North on a 10-1 scoring run over a 2:01 stretch to set up a nail-biting finish. Mount Miguel's Alan Aguilar hit a 3-pointer to break the spell and extend the South's lead to 77-70 with 1:55 left. Then Keller and Zimmerlink took the North on a 9-0 run. After a South miss, Zimmerlink tied the game at 77-77 with a jump shot at 1:12.The North took the lead on a steal and lay-up by Keller. It was a short-lived advantage, however, as Helix's Johnny Davis, the Grossmont South Player of the Year, hit a pair of free throws to tie it at 79-all with 0:33.7 seconds left.In almost storybook fashion, it came down to Keller vs. Davis. Keller, a 6-4 guard, dribbled the ball from the top of the key inside the paint with the 6-0 Davis defending. As Keller turned to shoot, Davis went for the steal and came up with a foul instead.Keller, who scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the second half,
converted two free throws with 0:9.9 remaining to make it 81-79.The South had one last chance, but Christian's Chris Carter, who finished with a team-best 19 points, missed a 3-point shot in traffic from the corner with 0:02 left. Zimmerlink grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and then sealed the victory with two free throws.Zimmerlink scored 9 of his 12 points in the final quarter, and also had a game-high 8 assists. Keller was 7-for-11 shooting in the second half after hitting just 2-of-11 in the first half.
