SLOW
DOWN!
Drivers Please Be Extra Alert, Children Head Back to School
Walk, bike, drive safely - now and in the coming
weeks students are heading back to school. The
El Cajon Police Department encourages both children
and adults to remain extra cautious, not only
during the coming weeks, but every month throughout
the year. It's important to remind your kids how
important their safety is to you and that they
need to stay alert as they travel to and from
school. Drivers, especially those in school zones,
need to also do their part to observe posted speed
limits and watch for children. Let's do all we
can to make our roadways safer!

Stay Cool In A Cool Zone
Beat the heat and save on energy costs by going to
a local Cool Zone! Cool Zones are designated air-conditioned
buildings easily identifiable by a light blue Polar
Bear Cool Zone logo. There are more than 100 locations
throughout San Diego County in libraries, indoor malls
and senior centers (like the Downtown El Cajon Library
and the Westfield Parkway Mall). The Cool Zones website
provides a list of places to go that are air-conditioned
when the weather is extremely hot as a way to stay cool
and save on energy costs. Please make sure pets are
safe. Be sure they have cool shade and plenty of water
and remember temperatures in a vehicle can rise dramatically,
quickly causing serious injuries, even death. NEVER
leave babies, children, the elderly or your pets in
a vehicle - not even for a moment. For more information
on Cool Zones, please call (800) 510-2020 and press
"6", or visit www.CoolZones.org.
If You Volunteer Your Time In El Cajon, We'd Like
To Honor You!
As the City of El Cajon continues to celebrate 100
years of incorporation, we would like to honor those
who volunteer in our community through the 100 Hours
Honoring 100 Years Volunteer Program. During this Centennial
Year, as we reflect on our rich City history, it is
important to recognize that it is the people who make
El Cajon the "Valley of Opportunity," including
our volunteers. The 100 Hours Honoring 100 Years Volunteer
Program was developed to provide an opportunity for
El Cajon residents and others involved in the community
to be recognized for their service in honor of El Cajon's
Centennial. Through this volunteer program, the City
will recognize the volunteer service performed in the
El Cajon community during the Centennial year (November
2012 through November 2013). All are invited to participate,
whether as an individual, or in a group on behalf of
an organization, community group, or business. Find
out more by visiting the Centennial website, www.elcajon100.com,

MEET LOCAL LEGENDS: LIVING WELL
El Cajon Library exhibit, reception and open house
San Diego County Library recently launched its newest
art exhibit - San Diego Legends: Living Well. The El
Cajon Branch (201 E Douglas Ave) will host the exhibit
from July 15Aug. 15, with a special Reception
and Open House on Thursday, August 1 at 12 p.m. honoring
El Cajon resident Rita Cloud (pictured). The Legends
exhibit is an annual recognition comprised of painted
portraits by local artist Mona Mills, photographs, and
impact statements about six local elders who lead by
example.
The Reception and Open House event will include a performance
by African drummers from the World Beat Center, refreshments,
a craft program for children, and a meet and greet with
Library Director José Aponte and Rita Cloud,
one of the Legends honored in the exhibit. Cloud fought
racism growing up and continues to promote social justice.
She was part of the first African-America family to
move to the El Cajon area and later worked to educate
youngsters about discrimination as a substitute teacher.
I fought every day to sensitize people,
said Cloud. Sometimes you have to buck what's
going on and say, 'There's a way.
Cloud took action by serving as Co-Captain of the Affirmative
Action Committee for local schools and was a founding
member of the Friends of the El Cajon Library, now celebrating
its 50th anniversary. She also served on the building
committee, and successfully fought for the El Cajon
Library to be built in 1991, which she argued was necessary
in order to better serve a diverse community.
The other five Legends featured in this years
exhibit are:
Salvador Barajas: One of the original Chicano Park
muralists
Phebe Burnham: Ninety-three year old award-winning
artist
Carmen Duron: Worked in the fields with Cesar Chavez
and the Farm Workers Union; advocates for elders through
work with Adult Protective Services
Randy Edmonds: Southern California Tribal Elder, community
organizer, and activist
Gordy Shields (April 20, 1918 June 30, 2013):
Record-setting bicyclist and bicyclist rights activist
This collective of individuals demonstrate that
people from all walks of life can, with a clear sense
of mission and purpose, positively impact their neighbors,
our region, and the world, said Library Director
José Aponte.

U.S. Army's Community Salute to Heroes,
Apr. 6
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (4-3-13) The San Diego Army Advisory
Council (SDAAC) announces its 2nd annual Community
Salute to Heroes, benefiting First Responders
and military families. FLYER
The event, which includes a 5K Crossfit competition
for all age groups in both individual and team
formats, is slated for the campus of Grossmont
High on Sat., Apr. 6. Check-in begins at 7 a.m.,
with races from 8 a.m. until noon.
"Last year's inagural event brought in more
than 1,000 people, so we expect an even greater
turnout this Saturday," said Jim Bernet,
executive director of SDAAC, an all-volunteer
organization. "Our group is one of 62 grassroots
councils from across the country that supports
the U.S. Army, and schools' ROTC and JrROTC programs."
Highlighting the Community Salute to Heroes will
be an awards program, starting at 11 a.m.
El Cajon mayor Mark Lewis will receive a Lifetime
Achievement Award from the U.S. Army for his many
years in public service. In addition, the U.S.
Army will provide the Oath of Enlistment to more
than 100 future soldiers, all from San Diego County,
as they head to basic training in the weeks ahead.
"Many people would be surprised to learn
that more people from San Diego County join the
U.S. Army than the combined totals from the other
major military branches -- Navy, Air Force and
Marines," added Bernet. "It's because
there are more job opportunities in the Army."
"Because we are the biggest branch of the
U.S. Armed Forces, we have more than 140 types
of job openings, while the Marines may have only
50. And being the biggest means one can become
eligible for promotion much quicker."
Lt. Commander John Oliver, who oversees battalion
recruiting efforts in Southern California from
his Orange County office, will also appear at
the event. San Diego County fields three U.S.
Army recruitment offices, located in La Mesa,
Chula Vista and San Marcos.
The U.S. Army will also recognize area businesses
for employing U.S. military veterans, along with
other accomplishments within the community.
The event will also include various demonstrations
from the U.S. Army and the San Diego Police Department.
In addition, gourmet food trucks will be available,
free activities for children and families, a silent
auction, along with live music. Admission is free
to this community event.
Proceeds will go to the SDPD Star Pal proigram
(www.starpal.org), which offers recreational and
education opportunities for underserved and at-risk
youth, introducing them to healthy, structured
activities while stressing the importance of academic
success.
The SDAAC is a local, 501(c)3 nonprofit, all
volunteer organization. Its mission is to extend
the reach of the Army into the community in order
to develop relationships, inform the public and
foster positive perceptions of Army service.

May 4
As part of the City of El Cajon's Centennial Year celebration,
the El Cajon Historical Society is having a Historic
Home Tour on Saturday, May 4, of the JPR Hall Ranch
Home. The Hall family arrived in San Diego in 1886,
and not finding it to their liking, moved to El Cajon,
where Jesse Phillip Rexford Hall and his wife Charlotte
purchased 60 acres for wheat, fruit trees, and a vineyard
in the east end of the Valley. Later, their eldest son
Wilson Dana Hall added 40 acres to the south for wheat.
JPR and son WD built this redwood home in about 1896,
after WD had been working on the Hotel del Coronado.
The family kept the home until the 1930's and then it
had various owners until 1959 when Albert and June Van
Zanten purchased the home. The home is now owned by
their daughter Jonna and her husband Ken Waite. Visit
this beautiful home during the Historic Home Tour on
Saturday, May 4 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15
in advance, $20 at the door. Enjoy lemonade & iced
tea in the garden. Please note: due to the steps, stairs
and old walkways, please wear flat shoes. The home is
located at 1591 E. Madison Avenue in El Cajon. Proceeds
benefit the El Cajon Historical Society. Mail checks
to ECHS, P.O. Box 1973, El Cajon, CA 92022. For more

To Adopt A New Loving Pet!
How about a new family pet for the holidays? Don't forget,
the El Cajon Animal Shelter is the perfect place to start
your search! The shelter often has a large number of warm
loving cats, kittens, and dogs available for adoption.
Shelter hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m.; closed from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The front
office is open until 5:30 p.m. for licenses; and they

adoptions, the shelter provides many services for the
Cities of El Cajon and La Mesa. Be sure to check with

El Cajon Police Department Targets Impaired Drivers
with Checkpoint
Please designate "before" you celebrate!
The El Cajon Police Department will be conducting a
DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Fri., Dec. 28, 2012,
at approximately 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. Sat., Dec. 29,
2012. In an effort to reduce the number of people killed
and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes, DUI
checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and
get them off the street, as well as educate the public
on the dangers of impaired driving. All too often, members
of our community are senselessly injured or killed on
local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers
License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies,
as well as ensuring drivers have a valid drivers license.
A major component of these checkpoints is to increase
awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to
encourage sober designated drivers.
A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving
this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education
efforts, the El Cajon Police Department believes motorists
can be deterred from drinking and drugged driving. Traffic
volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked.
Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or
drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear
message to those who are considering driving a motor
vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs - "Drunk
Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest." The public
is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling
9-1-1 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Funding
for this operation is provided by a grant from the California
Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration.
Suicide Prevention and Support
Help is available, especially during the holidays! If
you or someone you care about is in crisis and needs
immediate help, call the Crisis Hotline at (888) 724-7240.
The phone lines are answered by trained professionals
available 24/7; the call is free and confidential. If
emergency medical care is needed, call 9-1-1 or go to
the emergency room of the nearest hospital.
