SPRING VALLEY (5-6-16) — Tight close games are what most fans like to go and watch. Well, on Thursday (May 5) that is exactly what the folks at Steele Canyon got as El Capitan defeated the home-standing Cougars, 3-2, in a very tightly played contest in the Grossmont Hills League.
JAKE MEDFORD did his part as he went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Vaqueros (11-10, 3-3 GHL).
LANDON SCHIRER pitched well, but was hung with the loss. The junior threw a complete game two hits, one walk, seven strikeout performance that had the Vaqueros looking silly most of the day.
The Cougars (9-12-1, 2-5 GHL) banged out seven hits in the loss.
El Capitan got the scoring started in the first inning. Medford coaxed the only walk that Schirer would issue on the day, to lead the game off. He was moved to third on a pair of ground outs. A throwing error allowed KENNY OLHAUSER to reach first base and Schirer came into score to give the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead.
Steele Canyon put their first run in the bottom of the second. JOSH ESQUIBEL reached via a walk. SERGIO ALCARAZ singled to move Esquibel to second with one out. TREVOR ROW singled to center to bring in Esquibel and tie the game up at one at the end of two innings.
The Cougars would take the lead with the leadoff hitter of the bottom half of the fourth. Alcaraz launched a solo home run to left center field on a curveball that didn’t move too much.
In the top of the sixth, the Vaqueros saw Medford lead things off with a single. VICTOR CARLINO laid down a sacrifice to move Medford into scoring position. After a pop out, Olhauser was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. DAWSON McCLANAHAN hit a fly ball that was dropped by the outfielder. Both Medford and Olhauser came around to score, giving El Cap a 3-2 lead.
BAILEY ROBERSON came in and closed the door on a “six out” save.
“We battled,” Steele Canyon head coach DAN NERAT commented. “Landon threw a great game, but we left runners in scoring position and couldn’t get them in. We have to play better.”
The two teams will switch sites and play in Lakeside on Friday (weather permitting).

GRANITE HILLS 2, HELIX 0 – When the Eagles need a victory they count on ANDREW BROWN, who needed 96 pitches to pitch a 4-hit shutout with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts to knock off Helix in Thursday’s (May 5) Grossmont Hills League contest.
Brown’s muscle man efforts hoisted Granite Hills (16-8, 7-2) past Helix (13-9, 5-4) as he posted his 5th win in seven decisions.
With the injury to DILLAN SHRUM, Brown has had to pick up the slack – and so he has.
CONNER KONISHI pitched a complete game for Helix but was tagged with his first loss in 7 decisions. He allowed only 2 unearned runs as he struck out 5 and walked 2.
SEAN ROSS scored first for the Eagles, reaching first base on a dropped third strike. JOSH VERDON singled, advancing Ross to second. One out later DARIEN COSSIO reached base on an error and Ross scored on the play.
In the third inning TREVOR HAZELHURST walked and advanced on Cossio’s line drive to center field, and Hazelhurst moved to third on the throw that caught Cossio at second. BLAKE ST. CLAIR reached on a throwing error and Hazelhurst scored.

GROSSMONT 8, VALHALLA 3 – The Foothillers made it look easy as they scored 6 runs in the first frame and continued on to a lopsided Grossmont Hills League victory over Valhalla on Thursday (May 5).
Grossmont scored 6 runs in the first inning. Grossmont was sparked by KYLE PINEDA’s leadoff single. He stole second. STEVEN OUELLETTE walked and ADAM LOPEZ singled to left, scoring Pineda. One out later JESSE GARCIA singled to left to score Ouellette.
Later in the inning JAYDEN LOMBARDO singled, scoring Lopez and Garcia.
Pineda ignited the Foothillers as he went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and an RBI to set the pace.
KANNON ROMERO pitched 6 solid innings to earn his 3rd win against one loss while walking none and striking out seven.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 3, SAN DIEGO JEWISH ACADEMY 1 (8 inn.) – In the battle for the Ocean League championship Foothills Christian and perennial power San Diego Jewish Academy faced off the title in the first round on Thursday (May 5) in La Jolla.
The Knights’ BAILEY LEWIS (3-5) spun a one-hitter during an 8-inning stint to carry Foothills Christian to the league lead. He walked none and struck out 10 during his outing that gave him his 3rd win in 8 decisions.
The Lions Brennan Rubin leads San Diego County in strikeouts. The two runs he surrendered to Foothills Christian were the first he’s given up all year, according to Knights coach DAVE LEWIS.
“The star in this game was Bailey Lewis,” said Coach Lewis (no relation). “This was his game. It tied us for first place in the Ocean League and we beat Rubin, who hadn’t lost all year.”
KEITH VON DER LIETH was 1-for 3 with a run and an RBI.
“Vondy’s been carrying us with his bat all year long,” said coach Lewis. “He’s leading East County in batting, swinging in the .500s.”

MOUNT MIGUEL 12, EL CAJON VALLEY 3 – Mount Miguel snapped a 4-game losing streak Thursday (May 5) as the Matadors marched over El Cajon Valley in a Grossmont Valley League game in El Cajon.
Probably the most impressive part of Mount Miguel’s game was the pitching of MIGUEL OROZCO who twirled 6 innings and allowed only 4 hits, 3 runs, 8 walks and struck out 6 to earn his 2nd win in eight decisions.
Orozco was also 4-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI for the Matadors (5-17, 2-5 GVL).
Mount Miguel banged out 14 hits against two El Cajon Valley pitchers.
JOHNNY NICASIO was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while ANDREW MONTIJO was 2-for-5 with a triple.
