PETCO PARK (4-26-16) — The general theory on PETCO Park in Downtown San Diego is that it is a pitcher’s park. Well that theory was proven right again on Monday (April 25) night when the West Hills Wolf Pack and the Monte Vista Monarchs had to go deep into extra innings. The Pack ended up winning 2-0 in 11 Innings in a Grossmont Valley League game.
The two teams took vastly different routes to the end of the game. West Hills (11-7, 3-1 GVL) played every single player on their roster. Monte Vista (6-12, 2-2 GVL) played their starters for the entire contest.
MITCHELL CARLIN singled in the top of the 11th inning. RANDY JEWELL then doubled to left to drive in Carlin for the first run of the game. AARON BARKLEY then followed with a single of his own that brought in Jewell and Barkley took second on the throw home.
Monte Vista had their chances earlier in the game.
In the third, JUAN GUTIERREZ led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. FRANK GUTIERREZ followed that up with a fielder’s choice but Juan beat the throw to second base. Of course there was no fielder to receive the throw that went into center field, but Juan didn’t advance past second. Juan then tagged and advanced to third on the second out, which was to center field. But a strikeout ended that rally.
ANTHONY ROSARIO led the fourth inning off for the Monarchs with a walk. DAVID GARCIA singled to move Rosario to second. DIEGO SANDOVAL was nicked by an inside fastball to load the bases. The Sultans brought in JEREMIAH BARR and closed the door with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out.
Barr was injured the next half inning when he fouled off a ball. He went down immediately and was seen grabbing his knee.
Fast forward to the seventh inning. With two outs, Frank Gutierrez singled to get on base. Starting pitcher ANTHONY GONZALES doubled down the right field line all the way to the Petco Porch moving BLAKE MATANANE, who was running for Gutierrez, to third. BRANDON COLLIS was intentionally walked to load the bases. The bad news for the Monarchs was that Collins was forced out on a ground ball for the final out in regulation.
“We have a couple of chances with bases loaded and couldn’t cash in,” Monte Vista head coach Matt Atkinson said after the marathon game. “We had two, three chances to score and didn’t do it. But, I’m very proud of our guys. Their guys played a helluva game as well. It was a fun game to be a part of.”
The 11th inning was going to be the final inning that would’ve been played at PETCO Park for the game due to the cities curfew for teenagers.
“It was great how we hung together as a team and never got down,” West Hills head coach Mickey Deutschman said. “It’s proof on how this team continues to grow and develop. We wanted everyone to get a chance to play at PETCO.”
Both teams will continue Grossmont Valley League play later today. West Hills will travel to Mount Miguel. While on the other side Dictionary Hill, the Monarchs will be hosting first place Santana. Both games will begin at 4:00 p.m.
