SAN DIEGO (4-21-16) — By virtue of a 20-1 league rout over host Lincoln on Wednesday (Apr. 20) Christian set up a showdown for the Central League lead on Friday (Apr. 22) when the Patriots will entertain Coronado.
For the Patriots it was clear vision against Lincoln as Christian produced 20 runs, 20 hits and 20 RBI. No glasses needed here.
Christian sent 26 batters to the plate in the first two innings to carve out a 17-0 lead.
In an 11-run first inning KYLE STOWERS slashed a 2-run single as did ZACH HOGUIESSON and JOHN GERSHOW. Winning pitcher CHASE WEHSENER plated 2 runs with a single.
The onslaught continued in the second inning as Stowers rifled a 3-run homer and JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD and Gershow each delivered a run-scoring single.
“It was one of those games where we could play all 19 players on our team,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “We had the majority of our starters out of the game after two innings.”
Five Patriots produced multiple-hit games with Stowers collecting 3 hits and 4 RBI, Gershow was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, ETHAN CONTRERAS was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, Hoguiesson was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, Wehsener was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Wehsener blanked the Hornets over four innings to post his 3rd win against two losses.
Relievers JOE MARKOWICZ, DAVID TODD JEREMIAH and LUKE GENTRY each pitched one inning to complete the job.
MOUNT MIGUEL 9, CASTLE PARK 4 – The Mount Miguel Matadors rattled off 12 hits to produce their second highest scoring output in Wednesday’s (Apr. 20) non-league victory over Castle Park in South Bay.
After surrendering a 1-0 lead in the opening frame the Matadors erupted for 4 runs in the second inning and 3 in the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
To key blow in the second inning for Mount Miguel (4-13) was a 2-run double by DEVIN PATE to give the Matadors the lead for keeps.
The rally continued when ANGEL ABARCA singled in Pate and JOHNNY NICASIO drove in Abarca with a single.
The onslaught resumed in the fourth inning as Pate singled and scored on a base hit by Nicasio. MIGUEL OROZCO, who chipped in a single to score Nicasio. NICO CAMACHO joined the hit parade with a base hit to plate JOEL SANDOVAL, who had reached base on an error.
Mount Miguel served up the icing on the cake in the sixth inning when leadoff hitter Abarca tripled to score Pate who was safe on an error. Abarco then scored on a passed ball to put the game out of reach in the Matadors’ favor.
Five errors put the hurt on the Mount Miguel pitchers, but the Matadors, who did not allow an earned run, managed to maintain their stronghold. Orozco pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing only 3 hits while walking 3 and striking out 6 to post his 1st victory in five decisions. TREVOR DARBY slammed the door with 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief although he gave up one meaningless unearned run.
Nicasio set the tone for Mount Miguel with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.
“I feel real good for Trevor Pate,” said Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “He didn’t play last year. It was a good day for him today.”
