EL CAJON (4-17-16) — Sure-handed athletes such as Grossmont’s CALVIN FARRIS make the Foothillers a bona fide challenger for the Grossmont Hills League championship.
A quarterback on the football team and a 3-year pitcher on the baseball team has given coach JORDAN ABRUZZO an experienced leader.
The 6-foot-2 right-handed senior pitched a complete game 11-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against visiting El Capitan on Saturday (Apr. 16) at Joe Gizoni Field. He allowed 6 hits and no earned runs as he posted his 4th win without a loss. In his seven at bats Farris had 1 run, 3 hits and 1 RBI.
In addition to his pitching prowess, Farris who is bound for Brown University in Providence, RI with a 4.2 gpa, is also a success at the plate. He currently holds a .431 batting average.
“Once I saw Brown University I was ready to commit,” he said. “The city of Providence just blew me away. I just started surfing but the fact that I can surf in the Atlantic Ocean is even more exciting.”
“I have found hitting more enjoyable,” said Farris who is 4-0 on the mound with a 0.14 ERA. “Of course the feeling of pitching well is exhilarating. As a pitcher you’re in control of yourself. Nothing compares when you have the ball in your hand and in control of your best stuff.”
The Foothillers unleashed a 12-hit attack in the first game of the doubleheader. ADAM LOPEZ was 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI.
STEVEN OUELLETTE came alive with the bat to go 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI.
For good measure KYLE PINEDA whacked a solo home run in the sixth inning for Grossmont.
MYLES EMERSON doubled to drive in the only El Capitan run in the lopsided loss.
In the second game of the doubleheader the Foothillers completed a sweep with a 6-5 victory in 8th innings as JAYDEN LOMBARDO walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman rookie CALEB TEDOKON.
“He’s been hitting really good at the junior varsity level, so we brought him up,” said Foothillers coach JORDAN ABRUZZO of Tedokon. “The fact that he got the game winning hit in his first varsity start obviously made us happy. Everyone in the dugout was excited for him.”
El Capitan blew a 5-0 lead, nullifying a grand slam by Vaqueros’ catcher JASON MOORMAN in the third inning. Thanks to Moorman’s RBIs El Capitan led 5-0 after three frames. But after that their offense went flat.
The Foothillers scrambled back for a run in the third and two in the fourth. Key contributors to the Grossmont second game sweep included KANNON ROMERO who pitched 4 shutout innings, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 2 to run his record to 2-0.
“He picked us up and gave us a clear chance to win it,” said Abruzzo of Romero.
