MORLEY FIELD (4-10-16) — When a team allows as many walks as they get hits it is not a good thing. That was the case on Saturday (Apr. 9) when the San Diego City College Knights issued eight walks in addition to the seven hits that the Grossmont College Griffins safely knocked around the park in a 6-2 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game that the Griffins won.
Six Griffins (20-9, 13-4 PCAC) registered hits in the contest.
However, it was the seven walks that Aiden McIntyre (5-4) issued over his six and a third innings.
DONAVON McCRYSTAL (6-0, West Hills) continued his perfect season. McCrystal had six innings in his outing allowing five hits a walk, while striking out six and allowing a pair of runs (one earned). CRAIG GRUBBE (University City) and ANDREW SCHULTZ (Patrick Henry) combined to close out the final three innings of the victory.
With one out in the top of the second inning, TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a strike out, ANDRES RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) reached on an error by the Knights second basemen (he would continue onto second base) and Beard went home for the first run of the day. MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) walked to put runners on first and second. Diffley and Rios pulled off a double steal with both runners being safe. The catcher tried to get Diffley at second, but his throw went into center field and both runners went another 90 feet to allow Rios to score and make it 2-0 after an inning and a half.
That is how the game stood going into the top of the fifth.
ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) singled to left field. A pop out followed that, leading to NOAH STROHL’s (La Jolla) walk. JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) singled through the left side moving Strohl to second and driving Bostedt in for a 3-0 lead. Strohl then stole third. Two pitches later Mitchell stole second. The pitch following Mitchell’s steal, Beard drew a walk. JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) singled up the middle moving Beard over to second, while Strohl scored making it 4-0 Griffins. Mitchell had moved to third on Burkey’s single and came home on a Rios sacrifice fly to right field for a 5-0 Griffin lead.
San Diego got on the board with their two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-2 Griffins.
The Griffins scored their final run of the day in the top of the seventh. Mitchell walked with one out. He would advance to second on a wild pitch. Beard would collect an RBI when he singled through the left side to plate Mitchell.
The Griffins still need to make up a game that was missed on Thursday (April 7) due to rain.
Next week the Griffins are scheduled to play in Imperial at the Arabs ballpark on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. and then single games at Noel Mickelsen Field on Thursday (April 14) and Friday (April 15). Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
