SPRING VALLEY (4-9-26) – There was plenty of scoring to go around on the boys’ side of the East County All-Star game festivities Friday night (Apr. 8) at Mount Miguel High School. The Grossmont Hills team which also included players from Christian High topped the Grossmont Valley 159-138 with all 24-participants getting into the scoring.
Before tip-off JAVON NUTTER of Steele Canyon dropped an under the leg jam that enthusiastically capped off the slam dunk contest and earned Nutter the dunk contest trophy.
The Hills team jumped out to a 42-19 first quarter lead before things evened out a bit. TOMMY RUTHERFORD of Grossmont captured game MVP honors for the Hills with a game high 28-points and 10-rebounds. Rutherford scored 14-points in the third quarter when the Valley team had actually closed all the way back to within five points before the Hills squad expanded their lead once again.
The West Hills Wolf Pack had quite a showing for the Hills team in their victory. MIGUEL NAVA threw down several dunks on the night and finished with 23-points, eight rebounds and four assists. BRYCE PARSONS had 16 points as well to go along with four rebounds and three assists and MARCO OVIES led all players with seven assists.
On the Valley side Monte Vista had the standout performers with BO RANKINS leading the way with 28-points. SHAI STEVENSON chipped in 20-points and nine rebounds while TRE OWENS dished six assists and TERRY BONE added five-points as well.
Bone also advanced to the finals of the three point shoot-out during halftime, but it was JUSTIN FLISHER of Helix who walked away with the three point crown. Bo Rankin was the game MVP for the Valley.
El Cajon Valley’s lone participant AHMAD SULYMAN had 25 points on the night for the Valley. KADE KYGAR and BRYANT IRVIN had 17 and 12 points respectively, representing the Vaqueros of El Capitan. The Lakeside duo drained seven combined three pointers between the two of them but in the end the Hills offense was simply too much for the Valley to contain.
