Strohl, Strong provide 8th-ranked Griffins’ strength

KEARNY MESA (3-30-16) — ALAN STRONG continued his strong start to the 2016 season by completing his ninth quality start of the season in the eighth-ranked Griffins 10-5 victory over San Diego Mesa College in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game at Mesa College Stadium on Tuesday (Mar. 29).

 

Strong (7-0) threw seven innings allowing eight hits and a pair of walks that turned into three runs (two earned) and three strikeouts.  The sophomore is perfect on the season having registered a quality start in all nine of his starting assignments this season.

 

Offensively, freshman NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) and sophomore JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) both collected three hits in four at bats against Olympian (8-16, 4-9 PCAC) pitching.  Grossmont (18-7, 11-2 PCAC) collected 15 hits on the day.

 

Mesa jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings.

 

But then the Griffins kicked it into gear.

 

TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) tripled to right center with one out.  Strohl hit a deep ball to the cavernous center field area of Mesa Stadium for a sacrifice fly to allow Perry to trot home and cut into the Mesa lead at 3-1 after a third of the game.

 

The fourth inning is when the Griffins did most of their damage.

 

After a flyout, TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) singled to right field.  JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) doubled to center field pushing Beard over to third.  MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) walked to load the bases full of Griffins.  ALEX RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) singled to left field to put the merry-go-round in action and pull Grossmont within 3-2.

 

ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) walked to have the ride continue and tie the game at 3.  Perry beat out the throw from second as the Olympians were trying to turn a double play.  Diffley scored on the play to give the Griffins a 4-3 lead.  Perry then stole second to put runners on second and third.  Strohl singled to center knocking in both Perry and Rios for a 6-3 Grossmont lead.  Mitchell doubled to keep the rally going and put Strohl on third.  After a pitching change for Mesa, the new pitcher unleashed a wild pitch bringing in Strohl for a 7-3 lead and a six run inning.

 

Things were quiet in the fifth, but the sixth was a different story.

 

Rios started the frame with a walk.  A wild pitch advanced him to second.  Bostedt singled to center allowing Rios to go to third.  A passed ball pushed Bostedt to second and Rios scored to make it 8-3.  Perry singled past the third baseman allowing Bostedt to score the ninth run of the day.

 

In the top of the eighth, Strohl doubled to left center field with one out.  Mitchell followed that up with a single to right center field.  That allowed Strohl to score the Griffins 10^th run on the day.

 

In the bottom of that inning, Mesa scored twice to close out the scoring.

 

The same two teams will continue the series on Thursday (Mar. 31) at Noel Mickelsen Field on the campus of Grossmont College.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
