The Griffins lead extended to 7-0, but when the Olympian made one late run, the G-House answered with a 3-spot to pull away. In this week’s 3-game set, Grossmont out-scored Mesa, 27-18, claiming the 5-game PCAC set, 3-2, to mathematically eliminate the Olympians from pennant considerastion.

M.J. Sweeney smacked a pair of doubles, while Nico Newhan also posted a two-base hit.

The pitching win went to Ryan Ellis, who fired three shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits.

FLETCHER HILLS – The season series is now even at 2-all after San Diego Mesa overcame an early RBI by the Griffins’ Noah Manasan to take a 5-1 PCAC decision at Noel Mickelson Field.

The total of six runs  was the lowest in the series in almost exactly 10 years. On Apr. 124, 2015, Grossmont defeated Mesa by an identical 5-1 margin.

However, the Griffins remain alone in second place after Southwestern was upset at home by Imperial Valley, 4-2.

Grossmont has captured the season series in two of the past three yeam.rs. The rubber game is slated for Friday at Mesa, starting at 2 p.

Xlarification: It was noted that no team has ever captured a PCAC title in a season if they lost to Imperial Valley. The statement should be be that no school has won a PCAC outright with a loss to IVC. An example came in 2012, when there was a 3-way tie for the title; the Arabs defeated them all at least once, including  a double-header sweep of Palomar, 4-1 and 5-4, on Thurs., Mar. 15.

However, if needed to slect the “bottom-ranked” team in the region, who wouldf you select.

Going by record, it’s the Rio Hondo Roadrunners of Whitter, which came to town and were ripped twice via run rule by the Grossmont Griffins, 7-0 and 9-1, in non-conference ation.

Rio Hondo *3-34) is even below San Bernardino Valley (3-25), although the ballclubs did split a double header this season.

For the Griffins, Gracie Johnston fired a 3-hit shutout in the opener. In Game 2, Johnston did betterwith a 2-hitter, as the lone run was unearned to ruin the id for a double-shutout.
