Morgan, Newhan back Griffins in circus act

SAN MARCOS – Grossmont College starting pitcher Joshua Skiward was living on the edge in a version pf high-wire act, but the circus known as Griffins Baseball went to their ringmaster to save the show.

Perhaps, it was the “greatest show” of the season.

Relief pitcher Trevor Morgan entered to remove Skiward head from the mouth of the lion, going on to fire 4.1 4.1 innings of shutout ball in allowing just three hits to lead the G-House to a one-sided, 10-2 road victory against four-time defending PCAC champion Palomar.

Skiward displayed a series of highs and lows to keep the fans on the edge of their seat.

Over his 4.2 innings, Skiward, a freshman right-hander out of Westview, was firing no-hit ball against one of the state’s top hittingf ballclubs.

However, he was also wild, walking six batters, with a wild ptch and hitting a pair of Comets batters.

Still, Skiward allowed was pitching a shutout until Palomar third baseman Adrian Macias drilled a two-run triple, chopping the Grossmont lead to 3-2.

Thus, the call to Morgan, who coaxed an easy fly ball to right field to end the threat and strand the potential gam-etying runner on third base.

Grossmont rewarded Morgan, a Helix product, with the pitching victory by answering with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to start the romp.

The two-out rally saw Nico Newhan re-claim the CCCAA state lead for home runs with his 12th of the season. The third basman also ranks second among all PCAC batters with his 36th RBI.

Right fielder Talon Tucker followed with a basehit, then raced around the diamond to score on a line double by lefy fielder Noah Tenbrook.

An inning later, both Logan Aguilar and Newhan were hit by a pitch. M.J. Sweeney followed with a double to score Aguilar, although Newhan was nailed at the plate.

Still, the defensive gem of a relay failed to halt Grossmont’s momentum, as Tucker smashed a two-run triple for a 9-2 advantage.

The final boxscore was impressive. All nine members of the Grossmont batting orer either scored, drove in a run or both.

With the PCAC season reaching the midway point, schools are beginning to seperate.

Palomar (19-8 overall) remains on top at 10-2, buth others are on the Comets’ heels.

Southwestern (18-9) is now just one full game behind in second place at 9-3, immediately followed by Grossmont (17-8) at 8-5 in PCAC play.

The Grossmont-Palomar series is now even at 1-all, with the rubber game slated for Friday (not Saturday) at Grossmont’s Noel Michelson Field, starting at 2 p.m.
