FLETCHER HILLS – In the 402 year history of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, no baseball team that lost to Imperial Valley ever won the conference championship.
Should the historical fact hold, second-place Grossmont College remains remains in title contention.
Thanks to an 8th inning, solo home run by clean-up hitting Jacob Embleton, the Griffins (12-6 overall) snapped a tied ballgame to edge the Arabs, 5-4, at Noel Michelson Field on Monday (Mar. 10).
The contest was moved up 24 hours in anticipation of rain on Tuesday.
Embleton already owned two hits, including an RBI single, lining a basehit to left field to tie the contest in the first. But when the center fielder led off in the 8th, another middle-in pitch was drilled, but in the air for the homer to left.
Grossmont relief pitcher Xavier Franco then survived his fourth inning of work in the 9th. Following a single, sacrifice bunt and an intenrional walk, Franco ended the game with a strikeout and an infield pop out, running his season record to 4-0.
Frano matched starting picther Trevor Morgan, who also posted four strikeouts in his five innings.
Griffins left fielder Talon Tucker also homered. Embleton finished with three hits, while shortstop Nico Newhan went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
