‘Back to the Future’ goes Sultans g-hoops

CHULA VISTA — In a story-line similar to the motion picture Back to the Future, the Santana Sultans completed a return to greatness.

Santana captured their 10th CIF girls basketball championship in school history on Thursday (Feb. 27), dominating he Division 5 field following a 46-26 triumph over Del Lago of Escondido in the title game held at Mater Dei Catholic.

The second-seeded Sultans 25-6 overall) utilized defense in their run to the title, allowed just 57 total points in three triumphs.

The biggest string of shutout play occurred again the fourth-seeded Firebirds in the middle of the first half.

Santana held Del Lago without a point for a span of over than 17 minutes, posting 32 consecutive points to turn an early deficit into a 20-point advantage to breeze in the second half.

In winning their first CIF title e since 2006, the championship cpould mark a major juraround for the Sultans with a youth-filled roster.
Among the top performers was guard Sam Mora, a freshman, who paced both sides with a game-best 18 points. Mora led the programthis season with an 11..7 scoring average.

The team should remain strong in the near future with players like sophomore Harper Diaz and frosh Brynn Warren. Heqd coach Mark Leflar, who claimed his first crown in just his second season after going 5-23 the previous season.

The title is the school’s fourth this century’ the first three came in Division 3.

Del Lago reached the secrion final after upsetting top-seedeed Coronado, 29-25, in Tuesday’s (Feb. 25) semifinals. Meanwhile, Santana downed the Falcons of Mabel O’Farrell Charter, 50-19.

Division 4
Crawford 38, Escondido 37

At Sage Creeek, the Crawford Colts erased a 9-point deficit to nip the Escondido Cougars, 38-27. in the CIFSDS Divisin 4 finale held at Sage Creek.

Escondido, which was eliminated in Tuesday’s semifinals, gained the title-ame berth after El Cajon Vaklley was forced to forfeit after realizing they used an ineigilbe player.

Division 5-AA
SET 24, Foothills Christian 21

At MiraCosta College in a ballgame between schools which don’t have gymnasiums, SET (School for Entrepreneurship and Technology) of Kearny Mesa claimed its first CIFSDS crown by nudging Foothills Christian, 24-21, in the Division 5-AA contest for small scjools.

The Cinderella run saw SET, the No. 5 seed, regiaster a trio of upsets in its postseason run. The Lions downed No. 4 seed Ocean View Christian, top-seeded Warner and thr second-seeded Knights in consecutive ballagmes to take the title.

Foothills Christian (13-6), co-champions of the Sunset League, fell in the title contest for the third time in seeking the school’s first crown in the sport.
