Trujillo, Evans Lead Cougars To Convincing Victory

MIRA MESA  – The big bats of the Steele Canyon Cougars (1-0) came out to play on Friday afternoon as they slashed the Mira Mesa Marauders (0-5) 17-5 in Falcon Fiesta action.

Leading the offensive onslaught for the Cougars was Hailey Trujillo who was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate and drove in four RBI. She also terrorized on the base paths as she swiped a pair of bases.

Not to be outdone offensively but Trujillo’s teammate Bailey Evans also managed to have a big day as well as she drove in five RBI and chipped in with three hits and five runs scored.

The Cougars would put the game away in the top of the seventh inning as the bats came alive as they would tally eight runs in the inning.

Evans was given the starting nod by head coach Kevin Pearlstein and she would make it count as she went all seven innings in which she gave up five runs on twelve hits while walking three and striking out a pair. For her efforts she would get the victory.

Other offensive numbers in the game for the Cougars came thanks to Dannika Lakin who tallied a pair of hits and plated four times, and Kallan Shaw had a pair of hits while driving in a pair and scoring twice.

 

Brawley 9, Granite Hills 6 – Despite giving up six runs late the Brawley Wildcats would halt the late rally by Granite Hills and hold onto complete the victory in Falcon Fiesta action on Friday.

Taylor Nash tried her best to bring the Granite Hills Eagles back into the contest as she blasted a pair of homeruns in both the fifth and sixth innings. Her offense would lead the Eagles as she drove in five RBI and score twice.

Both Mia Downes who also belted a homerun and Olivia Cirar were the only other two Eagles batters to tally two hits in the game.

Brawley was led by both Isabella and Daniella Yescas who each tallied two RBI in the game.

Taking the loss for the Eagles, Kaleigh Baugher who gave up four hits and seven runs (zero earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking one. On the other side for the Wildcats, Lucy Ybarra who began the game surrendered two hits and no runs over two innings while striking out one.

Elsewhere

El Capitan 10, at Calexico 7 – El ap freshman Addison Higuera belted a grand slam, when the Vaqueros scored nine times in the sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit.

Julian 17, at Borrego Springs 8 – Hailey Bennett  and Lara Arabian , both juniors, each drove in three runs to power the Eagles over the host Rams.
