Christian, Helix Claim Opening Day Victories

EL CAJON – Despite giving up three late runs the Christian Patriots would hold onto beat the visiting El Capitan Vaqueros, 5-3, on Monday (Feb, 24) afternoon in non-league opening day action at Roma Dawson Field.

Christian (1-0) who last season made it all the way to the Division II CIF Semi-Finals before losing to runner-up Eastlake look to be one of the favorites this season to vie for a CIF championship started out early scoring three runs in the first two innings on Monday.

The first inning run by the Patriots came courtesy of Keels Carrizosa who drove in a run on an single to left field scoring Tyler Krystek. They would extend their lead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Pressly Villalva and Krystek who managed to drive in runs on doubles.

Later the Patriots would add more runs when Villalva drove in Ashley Wood and in the bottom of the fifth inning Sammy Baca doubled in Keytyn Ruis to make it 5-0.

With a commanding lead junior Ava Barrios was shutting down the Vaqueros offense as she had only given up three hits and no runs before exiting the contest.

El Capitan (0-1) in the top of the sixth inning would take advantage of a Patriots error that led to two runs with two outs to make it 5-2. They would add on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gwen Hill with two outs drove in Isabella Farris to pull within 5-3.

Makenna Burton drew the start for the Vaqueros. On the day she went four innings in which she allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out two in the loss.

On the other side for the Patriots, Barrios went five innings in which she allowed no runs on three hits while fanning twelve in the win.

Ciara Bernardini and Quinnley Morehouse each collected a pair of hits for the Vaqueros. Bernardini also stole a pair of bases.

Christian in the game racked up 10 hits in which they were led by Villalva who drove in a pair of runs as she went 2-for-3 at the plate. Both Villalva and Krystek collected a pair of hits on the day.

 

HELIX 12, MAR VISTA 5 – Big day at the plate for Tatiana Hernandez-Ahmu in which she drove in five runs to lead the Helix Highlanders to the opening day victory on Monday afternoon.

Hernandez-Ahmu started her damage in the first inning as she doubled in a pair of runs, she would add a couple more RBI in the sixth and one in the seventh inning to round out her day.

Other Highlanders getting in on the act were Lauren Farace who doubled in two runs, and Clarissa Torres who drove in a run.

Katelyn Woodard drew the opening day start for Helix and would record the victory as she allowed two hits and three runs over two innings in which she struck out three and walked three.

Offensively Helix (1-0) was able to tally 13 hits against Mariners pitching which included Ta’Tiannah Wright and Hernandez-Ahmu collecting three hits apiece. Other Highlander contributions included multiple hits by both Lillianna Benabdelhalil and Torres.
