FLETCHER HILLS – Sometimes you get lucky; somwtimes ou make you own luck.

In the case of the Grossmont College baseball, the Griffins did both to remain undefeated.

In a ballgamewhich came down to one final inning, visiting Irvine Valley College scored once to take the lead. However, Grossmont — with two outs and no one on — scored twice in the home-half of the ninth to walk-off the Lasers, 6-5, in Tuesday’s (Feb. 11) non-conference thriller at Noel BOX Michelson Field. Consecutive basehits to all three fields — M.J. Sweeney (to right), Jacob Embleton (to left), and Nico Newhan (to center) — tied the contest.

Pinch-runner Miguel Martinez beat the throw to the plate, with the other baseunners both advancing into scoring position.

Then the lck factor arrived.

Irvine Valley was in position to forge extra innings, however a Noah Tenbrook tapper back to the mound was booted, allowing Embleton to post the game-winner.

The Griffins push their overall record to 6-0,, believed to equal the best start in school history.

Irvine Valley, which scored its run in the ninth on a wild pitch, fell to 6-3.

The Lasers held an early 3-0 advantage, but Grossmont scored three times in the sxith to grab a 4-3 lead, only to watch IVC get even in the seventh.

Newhan slugged a solo homer to left with two down in the third before the Griffins took the lead.

In the sixth, Tenbrook singled. SSS Griffin wasa hit by a pitch, with Teabrook scoring on a basehit by Owen Rodgers .

IVC would also allow a pair of runs on wild pitches for a 4-3 Grossmont lead.

At 5-0, Grossmont equals Saddleback for the second-best start in the Southland this season. The high was a 7-0 start for Antelope Valley (now 9-1).

The best start in California this season is held by undebeaten Santa Rosa (9-0), the school which fell to the Griffins for the 2017 state championship.

Grossmont can equal Antelope Valley’s fast start when they host will not be on Thursday; the contest was already been postponed because of the threat of rain.

Thus, the next slated contest is set for Saturday (Feb. 15) at home against San Bernardino Valley, starting at noon.
