EL CAJON (2-20-16) — The Monte Vista Monarchs began the season with a 2-11 start, and teams with that kind of shaky beginnings don’t usually finish the season with a league championship.
But Monte Vista (13-15, 8-2 GVL), which clubbed El Cajon Valley 67-31 Friday’s (Feb. 19) regular season finale, wound up sharing the Grossmont Valley League championship with Granite Hills to complete their climb to the top.
On the flip side, El CajonValley finished its season 4-22, 2-8 GVL.
“I’m really happy for our kids,” Monarchs coach MIKE TULLY said. “Considering the course of our season, to finish as co-champions is really satisfying. Our kids get a patch for their letterman’s jacket.”
In the title-clinching win against the Braves, Monte Vista used a 29-0 scoring run in the second half to turn the game into a blowout. That secured the second GVL title for Monte Vista in three years.
SHAI STEVENSON led the parade with 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Monarchs.
“Stevenson has to be one of the best players in our league,” said Tully of the 6-foot-4 senior marksman.
Five players contributed to all of Monte Vista’s scoring, including DEONDRE McHAYLE, who rang up 16 points, two more than BO RANKINS registered.
HUSSEIN AL-ANEZI led the Braves with 14 points, including a pair of treys.
Newcomer DANIEL STOKES pounded the boards for 15 caroms for the Braves.
Monte Vista: Shai Stevenson 24, Deondre McHayle 16, Bo Rankins 14, Terry Bone 7, Tre Owens 6.

SANTANA 54, EL CAPITAN 40 – Led by quarterback FRANKIE GUTIERREZ’ 17 points and a hard-nosed defense, Santana skirted by visiting El Capitan in Friday night’s (Feb. 19) Grossmont Valley League regular season finale.

Christian finished up 18-8, 8-4 CL.
It was one of the poorest shooting night’s of the season, according to Patriots assistant coach TIM BROWN.
“Our offense struggled, just had a tough time scoring,” he said.
TRAVIS BALLARD continued to be the king of the hill for the Patriots, pouring in 18 points and clearing 18 rebounds.
“You always know what you’re going to get from Travis,” said Brown. “But nobody else scored more than eight.”
The 42-point outlet is the second lowest of the season for Christian, which tallied only 41 against El Rancho Las Vegas/
