Water Polo is Hot, Soccer ‘scores’ goal

Men’s Water Polo

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Grossmont College men’s water polo, the only school in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with a winning record this season, improved to 14-7 overall after finishing second at the Cuesta College Tournament over the weekend (Oct. 18-19).

According to social media, many believe the 7th-ranled Cougars “stacked” the tournament bracket, facing Grossmont in the first contest on Friday following the long drive to the central coast instead of meeting on the final game on Saturday.

Thus, Cuesta won, 17-13. The Griffins then waltzed in their other three contests. They dpwned Diablo Valley (16-10), College of San Mateo (19-5) and Citrus (21-12).

Cuesta did not announce an all-tournament team.

Women’s Soccer

RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The losing streak continues,but not the shutout string is done.

After allowing 114 consecutive goals without scoring,the Cuyamaca College women’s soccertgeam finally got on the scoreboatd… but they had nothing to do with it.

With visiting San Diego City College leading 6-0 in the first half in Friday’s (Oct. 18) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest, the Knights put the ball into their own net for an own goal, giving the Coyoyesd their first goal of the season in 13 starts (according to the boxscore posted on the CCCAA state website).

For SDCC (3-7-3 overall, 3-6-1 PCAC), Bianca Calafato scored two goals, including the game’s first tally in the opening minutes.

Meanwhile, Grossmont College, which blanked Cuyamaca, 7-0, back on Oct. 4, haven’t scored since.

Since the victory, the Griffins (2-10-1, 2-7-1 Pcac) losing streak and shutout streak reached four games after a 4-0 setback to MiraCosta, the PCAC leaders over Southwestern.

Women’s Volleyball

FLETCHER HILLS – San Diego Mesa eliminated defending champion Grossmont College from the Pacxific Coast Athletic Conference race following Friday’s (Oct. 18) four-set win in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference action.

The Griffins took the first set, but eventually fell by game scores of 19-25, 25-18, 25-20, 26-24.

Mesa needs to defeat MiraCosta to claim the crown. The Griffins should finish in third place.

Cuyamaca College remains tied at the bottom of the PCAC with Imperial Valley.

Cross Country

VICTORVILLE – The Cuyamaca College women’s cross-country team will participate in this Friday’s (Oct. 25) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship. The meet will be held in conjuction with the Inland Empire Athetic Conference meet.
