FULLERTON – San Diego Mesa College quarterback Jax Leatherwood fired a 19-yard touchdown pass to Conor Lawlow with 24.9 seconds remaining, as the 9th-ranked Olympians scored 13 points in the final period to upend 12th-ranked Fullerton College, 20-13, in a Thursday (Oct.17) special in the National Conference Southern Division. The setback dropped the host Hornets out of a three-way tie for first place with Riverside and Saddleback. Meanwhile, Mesa moved to within a half-game of the co-leaders entering Saturday’s action.’
The Olympians monopolied the clock in the third period,finally capping a mammoth 155-play, 75-yard drive on a 1-yard dive by Leatherwood for a 13-10 lead just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter,
Fullerton answered with its own mammoth play, a 50-yard field goal by Charles Viorel to knot the ballgame at 13-all with 5:10 to play.
However, Mesa’s ball control strategy worked to perfection. Taking the ball at their own 25 following a touchback on the kicxkpff, Leatherwood converted a pair of third down to keepp the ball moving before finding Lawlor.
Fullerton’s last chance advanced the ball to the Mesa-45 before time ran out.
Earky on, Mesa took the initial lead when Jalil Tucker collected a 26-yard scoring pass from Leatherwood.
However, the Fullerton defense settled in as the Hornets would take a 10-7 leads three three periods before the strategu chance by the Olympians proved to be the difference.
Leatherwood was a sparkling 10-for-16 on third-down conversions, cokpleting 26-of-47 passing for 229 yards.
Meanwhile, the Mesa defense limited the Hornets to a mere 157 yards in total offense and a mere 6 first downs (two on penalties).
Cooper Mau recovered a fumble for Mesa, while the defense received two sacks by Christian Motam and another from
Jaydin Jackson.
The leading tackler for Mesa was Cameron Sanderlin with seven, including a pair of losses.
The Olympians are now 5-1 overall (2-1 NCSD); Fullerton drops to 3-3 on its Homecoming night.

Comets escape ‘recipe for disaster’
Palomar 20, No. 10 Saddleback 14
SAN MARCOS – Palomar College running back Christian Hall snapped a 14-all deadlock with a 5-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, but then the Comets were faced with a major jinx.
Palomar missed the point-after conversion, holding a 6-point lead rather than seven — a recipe for disaster.
However, the Palomar defense did not allow 10th-ranked Saddleback to score over the contest’s final 21-plus minutes, allowing the Comets to secure the upset of the day by knocking off the conference co-leading Bobcats, 20-14, on Saturday (Oct. 19).
With the upset, that means two of the three leadersin the National Conference Southern Division lost,leaving Riverside as the lone leader at the midway point of the NCSD schedule.
RCC tops the field at 3-0, while standing at 2-1 are San Di ego Mesa, Saddleback, Mt. San Jacinto and Palomar. STANDINGS
Palomar held leads of 7-0 and 14-7, but Saddleback dreweven each time. But at 20-14, things changed.
Several key defensive stops would keep the Bobcats away.
A heavy pass rush by Jacob Sisson forced a premateur Saddleback pass on third down, forcing a unt late in the third period.
In the fourth quarter, several Saddleback passes were successfully defended by the Comets secondary. Thenwith 4:01 remaining, Davion Green at th registered an interception near midfield.
The Comets followed with a pair of first down pic0us to run out the clock for their biggest win at their new home-field facility.
No. 3 Riverside 62, Grossmont 10
FLETCHER HILLS – Riverside City College, ranked No. 3 in California, raced to a 28-0 second quarter lead. But when Grossmont College finally answered, the Tigers retorted with one of the longest plays of the season in racing past the host Griffins, 62-10, Saturday (Oct. 19) at Mashin-Roth Memorial Field.
Grossmont got on the scoreboard when Jaden Green collected a 9-yard TD run.It was the school’s first touchdown since late September,
However, RCC (5-1) immediately answered on a 77-yard pass from Brady Jones to Jackson Owens.
Next week, Grossmont (1-5) travels to Mission Viejo to face Saddleback. Thed Bobcats are tied for first with Riverside.
Mr. San Jacinto 45, Southwestern 3
CHULA VISTA – The Mt. San Jacinto Eagles pounded the winless Southwestern Jaguars, 45-3, in National Conference Southern Division play at Chet Devore Memorial Stadium.
The visiting Eagles (4-2) mounted a 17-0 before SWC (0-5) scored before MtSJC ran off four unanswered touchdowns.
