It’s anyone’s league in GHL flag football

FLETCHER HILLS – An accomplishment that has occurred just one time in the 60-plus-year history of the Grossmont Conference football was achieved in less than two season in girls flag football.

Grossmont Hills League leading Grossmont held an opportunity to grab the lead in the second half, but visiting Steele Canyon kept the Foothillers out of the end zone, then added an insurance score to give the Cougars a 19-7 verdict Monday (Oct. 7) at Lt. Mitchell Memorial Field.

Grossmont (7-3 overall), ranked fourth in the CIF San Diego Section, suddenly finds themselves a half-game out of GHL lead (pending the results of Monday’s late contest with Santana).

Late Score: Grossmont 34, Santana 12

Meanwhile, Steele Canyon was in position to take leadership of the GHL, but the Cougars dropped its nightcap contest to the new leader, Granite Hills, 19-13, in triple eader action among the four schools fielding ballclubs this season.

(Granite Hills – an interesting note: Except for one sophomore and a senior, the entire ballclub is comprised of freshmen).

For the Cougars to take down Grossmont in a mild shocker, a pair of early touchdown passes y Aniya Scott was good for a 12-0 advantage.

Scott first found Kaliani Ewing along the right sideline, then repeated a similar pass pattern to Sabrina Ferguson. Both score came from about 2- yards out.

The Foothillers inched back before halftime.

Quarterback Marissa Farace capped a 60-yard drive with a scoring toss to Jaelyn Jensen, who leaped over a Cougars defender to register a solid reception.

The only difference: the Hillers were able to convert the PAT from the 5-yard line. Thus, any additional scoring would give them the lead in the second half.

Grossmont twice firede passes to the end zone, but to no avail.

On a third-down toss, Farace’s aerial to D’Miyah Edmond grazed the fingertips of the diving senior.

On fourth down, safety La’vehya Iglehart broke up a pass down the center of the field for a turnover on downs.

Steele Canyon then raced 71 yards for the insurance score, withIglehart hauling in a 22-yard pass from Scott — her thirf TD pass.

In the final two minutes, a desperate Grossmont pass was intercepted by Iglehart to cinch the victory and preserve the second-half shutout.

The raising Cougars move to 6-6 overall; Grossmont fell to 7-3 (pending the late Santana contest).
