2024 GROSSMONT COLLEGE MEN’S WATER POLO
ECS staff report
KEARNY MESA – The Grossmont College men’s water polo team may already own a victory on the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference season, but the Griffins trek to another PCAC unofficially starts Wednesday (Oct. 2) with a road match at San Diego Mesa. The contest will start at 5 p.m.
Grossmont (7-3 overall) enters the match riding a 6-game winning streak, capped by a dramatic road victory over host Citrus, 15-12, in Saturday (Sept. 28) Citrus College Tournament, handing the Owls (9-3) just their third setback all season.
The Griffins also played Whittier College in an exhibition match at the Citrus tank. Although the G-House lost, it was considered an excellent tune-up entering PCAC action.
Except for Grossmont, every other team in the PCAC owns a losing record, but Mesa’s schedule has proved to be the most challenging. Thus, the Olympians are considered to be the team to slide past in order to clinch another league championship and a CCCAA state playoff berth.
In defeating the state-ranked Owls, Grossmont mounted a 6-2 lead through the first period, but whipped Citrus by a 6-0 count in the second eriod before releasing the starters.
The Griffins held Citrus All-America candidtae Killian Pressley to five goals, mostly in the second half.
The G-House offense saw Jake Simpson (Grossmont HS) share dcoring lsaurels with five goals, while Zachariah Barclay (Clairemont) and Miles Boone (Valhalla) added two markers each.
Starting goalie Lon Kun-Szabo (Patrick Henry) earned the victory, needing to register just two saves in the first half.
