Spartans sweep pair from East County

FLETCHER HILLS – Defending state champion SAan Diego Mesa may have clinched the Pacxific Coast Athletic Conference title even before the first round of PCAC play has been completed.

While the undefeated Olympians, which has dropped just three sets all season, was racing to a pair of easy victories this week, defending PCAC champion Grossmont was upset at home to MiraCosta, 3-1, on Wednesday (Sept. 25).

Thus, Mesa, whcih was oushed only by Long Beach is a 3-2 Olympians roar victory earlier in the month (Sept. 20), needs only to remain healthy in order to becoem the first program to repeat as state champions in more than a decade.

OThe previous repeat winner was L.A.Piecre, which was a 3-time winner in 2010-12.

Of course, the all-time best was the 12-time state champs from Golden Wesy College in Huntington Beach, 1993-2004

Grossmont, junder head coach Collenn Suwara, took crowns in 1987 and 1989, but following last season’s third place finish, a repeat trip to the Final Four seems unlikely.

Elsewhere,C Cuyamaca College was swept in two matches, falling to Southwestern on Wedesday, then MiraCosta on Friday (when GC had a bye).

The Coyotes (1-4 PCAC) remain at the borrom of the PCACX with San Diego City.
