OTAY RANCH 56, GROSSMONT 20

LA MESA – The Otay Ranch Mustangs looked more Grossmont Foothiller-like than the Hillers themselves in the first quarter of their non-league game on Friday night.

The Mustangs scored on three consecutive drives to start the game in a 56-20 romp over Grossmont.

Otay Ranch scored on its opening drive and the Foothillers from there could only get as close as 21-6 after Noah Walker had a touchdown reception in the opening minute of the second quarter.

The score was set up when Walker returned a kickoff 90 yards to the Otay Ranch 5 after Grossmont had trailed, 21-0, at the end of the first quarter.

Grossmont trailed 35-6 when Tommy Donovan threw a 35-yard completion to Amari Riley, which set up a touchdown pass from Donovan to Kenneth Krause with 10:20 to play in the third quarter which made it 35-12.

The Foothillers got a 2-yard touchdown from senior Casey Campbell, following by a conversion pass to Krause as Grossmont trailed, 42-12.

Otay Ranch (2-3) had a pair of interception returns late as the Foothillers were going down firing.

Grossmont (2-2) hosts Monte Vista (2-2) next Friday in a Grossmont Conference matchup.

 

PATRICK HENRY 49, WEST HILLS 14 – West Hills put forth a strong effort to thwart off Patrick Henry’s attack in the first half on Friday night.

But the Patriots took over the second half, downing the visiting Wolf Pack.

West Hills (2-3) scored the first touchdown of the game on a 13-yard connection from quarterback Brayden DeAngelis to senior Brayden Reed.

DeAngelis was 10-for-20 passing for 106 yards, with four connections going to Reed.

After the Patriots had countered with a pair of scored to take a 14-7 lead, the Wolf Pack tied the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by Anthony Rosolino and West Hills went into halftime tied with the favored Pats, 14-all.

Rosolino also had a pair of receptions good for 27 yards.

However, West Hills was stymied offensively in the second half. Patrick Henry recorded three interceptions on the night.

Cody Cappelletti scored three touchdowns for Patrick Henry (4-1), while receiver Damien Carmichael had two touchdown receptions.

Henry star quarterbadck Eli Ruiz threw for 272 yards.

West Hills’ Jacob Romeo rushed nine times for a team-high 36 yards.

Zach Waters, a sophomore, had a sack for West Hills.

West Hills opens the Grossmont Valley League season at home against El Cajojn Valley on Oct. 4.

 

No. 2 CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 28, No. 13 HELIX 0 – No. 2 Cathedral Catholic seemingly coasted to a 28-0 victory in a section-rivalry game of the visiting Highlanders.

Dons quarterback Brady Palmer tossed three touchdown passes to junior Hunter Harrington, including a 67-yarder for a 7-0 lead.

Cathedral senior Jake Funderburg scored a 64-yard touchdown run to round out the scoring.

Helix senior Pablo Jackson rushed for 86 yards.

Braylen Ross had four catches for 40 yards for the Scotties.

 

CLAIREMONT 34, EL CAJON VALLEY 8 – The celebration was appropriate. The El Cajon Valley Braves knew they could rejoice in their first touchdown of the season late in the fourth quarter against the Clairemont Chieftains on Friday night.

El Cajon Valley had been held without a point over the first 19 quarters of the season until freshman Edwin Carmona cashed in with a short run on the Braves’ final drive of the night to finally put a touchdown on the scoreboard.

The Braves had a strong running game against Clairemont, gaining 168 yards on the ground on 24 carries, an average of seven yards per attempt.

Senior Thomas Souza had 12 carries for 61 yards for ECV, while teammte Vave Mossman had a pair of receptions for 20 total yards.

The Braves had a fumble recovery at the Clairemont 13 yard line by junior Leo Jones after Fabian Carmona, a senior, forced the ball loose.

Fabian Carmona had a team-high nine tackles, while Jones added five stops.

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 21, CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN 14 – The Knights won their third straight by defeating the visitors from Wildomar at Seau Field on Friday night in an 8-man game.

Foothills scored on a 21-yard pass by senior Ben Hernandez for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter as Josh Hawkins caught a flare pass after coming in motion and raced to the goal line.

The Knights scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass when Hernandez connected wtih Kameron Brown in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Hernandez also threw a 51-yard pass to senior Luke Bennett.

Foothills’ Ryder Molchanoff forced a fumble on a fourth-and-1 play in the third quarter, which was recovered by senior Ryder Dennett in the fourth quarter as Cornerstone was inside the red zone in the fourthquarter trailing, 20-7.

Simon Price, a senior, also had a fumble recover for the Knights, who improved to 4-1, including a forfeit win. FCHS’ only loss is to 8-man powerhouse California School for the Deaf (Riverside).
