Monte Vista 35, Coastal Academy 31
SPRING VALLEY — Monte Vista quarterback Derrick Taylor was confident he could lead the Monarchs’ offense when he learned he would be inserted as the starter due to an injury.
The Monarchs, after all, don’t necessarily put a lot of emphasis on their passing game.
However, when the Monarchs got into a pressure situation late trailing visiting Coastal Academy, Taylor was able to show his poise.
Taylor hit Rahshawn Florence with a 28-yard pass with 16 seconds to play to lead Monte Vista (2-2) to a come-from-behind win over the previously unbeaten Stingrays on Friday night.
It was the third game in a row that the Monarchs scored 35 points.
Alex Villanueva, Monte Vista’s unheralded rushing star, had over 200 yards and four touchdowns.
Villanueva had a 30-yard run to give Monte Vista a 6-0 lead. Later, a 9-yard rushing score from the Monarchs’ senior star gave him his third touchdown of the night.
Coastal scored their go-ahead touchdown with just 1:20 left in the game, giving the run-heavy Monarchs not much time on the game clock.
West Hills 7, Morse 0
SANTANA – The West Hills defense stymied the Morse Tigers and the Wolf Pack offense got a little fancy on their first series for the contest’s only touchdown in a 7-0 non-league win on Friday night.
Anthony Rosalino took a handoff from quarterback Brayden DeAngelis and the junior threw a short pass to senior Edgard Leon for a 10-yard touchdown as West Hills took a 7-0 lead before the fans were even able to get settled into the bleachers.
And if they missed the first West Hills drive, well, they missed all the scoring.
West Hills was able to get inside the five in the second half but were eventually turned away at the goal line on a fourth-down rush.
West Hills seniors Matthew Ingoglia and Leo Lugo had interceptions in the second half.
The Wolf Pack, who improved to 2-2, limited Morse to less than 50 yards of total offense.
