Bostonia debuts; Julian etches mark

EL CAJON – The debut of Bostonia Global Academy athletics in any sport was held Tuesday (Sept. 10), as the Lobos girls’ volleyball team opened Pioneer League action with a home match against Bonsall High from the North County.

Although the Legionairs captured the match in three sets, Bostonia Global improved as the action progressed, falling 25-9, 25-20, 25-22.

Lobos junior Niayh Staton will be remembered for several first.

Staton’s stats: with the team down 4-0, she scored the Lobos’ first point on a down-ball winner; she registered the club’s first service aces, the first of a match-best six for the match; and she potent serve scored a high four straight points.

The Lobos are coached by Matt Sommers, and play their home matches at the gymnasium that was the formere site of Emerald Middle School.

Meanwhile, Bonsall, in its second season of girls volleyball, captured its first match in seven starts this season.

The Legionairfes are coached by former Temecula Valley High basketball standout Jessica Kaller. who briefly played basketball for CSU Fullerton. Bonsall preview:

 

Back Country marathon

BORREGO SPRINGS – The host Borrego Springs Rams needed were forced into extended play (a/k/a, overtime) in the fifth set before nipping visiitng Julian, 19-17 in the final set.

However, a member of the Eagles will etch her name in the CIF-San Diego Section record book.

Eagles sophnore Cami Siraton registered 15 service aces, ranking second on the school’s all-time list. However, the mark sixth place in CIFSDS listed history.

The Julian record is 16 by Laura Cross in a 2003 match against Vincent Memorial.

The section record is 19 by Kimberly Gutierrez of Sweetwater in a 2013 match against SD-Southwets. But the next entries are almost all from the East County thanks to news services like the defunct Daily Californian and this webisite.

There is no official record for freshman, but the mark might go to Julian frosh Aryana Relaford. In the above match with Borrego Springs, she recorded 9 aces.

LAKESIDE – The final East County high school to open the girls volleyball season will be River Valley Charter, which will host the SET (School for Entrepreneurship & Technology) Lions today (Thurs., Sept. 12) at 4 p.m.
