RAMONA — The Steele Canyon Cougars were looking to lay low this season, preferring a possible sneak attack on their unsuspecting opponents.
Saddled with the daunting prospect of facing powerful league teams Granite Hills, Helix, and Mount Miguel, this year’s Steele Canyon team may be sheepish about touting their usual steady wares.
But after hanging a fifty-burger on the road against the mighty Ramona Bulldogs on Friday night, it will be hard for opponents, fans, and experts alike not to take notice of this relatively anonymous bunch of Cougs in 2024.
Steele Canyon looked much like the Cougar teams of recent lore in a 51-41 and it really wasn’t even that close.
Steele Canyon’s John Weaver rushed for 203 yards and a touchdown.
Weaver is the next of a long-line of Cougar backs that have had strong production behind the program’s usual strong offensive line. It’s safe to say that Weaver is one of the most unheralded running back prospects in the county.
Nico Jara had a 61-yard touchdown run for the Cougars.
Jameson Sablan had a 23-yard fumble return for a toughdown for SC.
Steele Canyon quarterback Gavin Caha was 10-of-15 for 169 yards with two touchdown passes.
Ramona sophomore QB Ryan Shaw was 18-for-22 for 250 yards and four touchdowns.
EL CAMINO 49, HELIX 20
LA MESA — The Helix Highlanders experienced some growing pains in their season opener against well-prepared El Camino.
Helix really can’t even boast of a single returning starter on defense in 2024. And the offensive side is pretty much completely new, as well.
El Camino forced four turnovers in the first half and converted three of them into points in a 49-20 win over the host Highlanders at Hart Stadium on Friday night.
The Highlanders scored on their first drive when Lee Norman-Lester had a 10-yard touchdown run.
Vinny Simon passed to Jathon Bejarano for a 17-yard touchdown for El Camino.
Norman-Lester finished with 113 yards passing and 115 yards rushing for Helix, but he was running around all night, part out of design, and part out of necessity.
Norman-Lester passed to Harlem Harris for a 4-yard touchdown to close a Wildcat lead to 28-13, however the Wildcats’ completed a 48-yard touchdown pass from Simon to Bejarano.
Norman-Lester had a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter as the Highlanders railed 35-20 entering the fourth.
