Griffins’ upset bid falls short against Screaming Eagles

EL CAJON (2-6-16) — The host Grossmont College Griffins came oh so close to springing an upset of the No. 5 ranked Mt. San Jacinto Screaming Eagles Friday night (Feb. 5).

Instead they dropped a 72-70 overtime decision to the visitors.

A layup by REMY LAWYER tied the game at 64-64.

Then Carl Brown vaulted the Eagles (23-4, 5-0 PCAC-North) into a 69-66 lead as he nailed a 3-point jump shot.

CORWIN FEERICK countered with a driving layup for the Griffins on an assist from DANIEL McCOWN.

With nine seconds to play Kendall Brown dropped in three consecutive free throws over a five second stretch, extending MSJC’s lead to 72-68.

Grossmont’s KAELEN MITCHELL spun in his only basket of the night with one second to play.

But Grossmont (14-10, 2-3 PCAC-North) fell short as the Eagles posted their 11^th straight victory.

Five Griffins reached double scoring digits, including Lawyer and MARCOS MEZA, who set the tone with 15 points apiece. McCown chipped in with 13 points, and SPENCER VERING and Feerick hit 10 points each.

Next up for the Griffins is a home bout against Palomar College on Wednesday (Feb. 10) in the Grossmont confines at 6 p.m.
