EastCountySports.com staff report
WICHITA, Kan. – The San Diego Stars won their opening game at the 90th NBC World Series in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday, defeating Boulder (Colo.), 7-5, thanks to a 7-run seventh that was highlighted by Jason Wright’s go-ahead, bases-clearing triple.
Jason Gonzalez (Santana/Grossmont College) went three innings to earn the pitching win, allowing one hit. Gavin Cook recorded the save.
The Stars were hitless for the first 5 2/3 innings until Wright blooped a single to left-center field.
Isaiah Cohens, a Wichita native from Tabor College, started the big-inning rally for the Stars with a single to right. Landen Bailey (Santana) drew a one-out walk to force Boulder’s starter from the game.
Will James (Steele Canyon) drove in the first run with a line single to right field.
Nick Chasey, a Newman (Iowa) University senior, drove in a pair with a solid grounder through the right side to draw San Diego to within 4-3.
After Wright’s big hit, Gianluca Fanelli had a RBI on a fielder’s choice grounder to second.
Gonzalez went three innings and allowed one hit for the Stars.
The Stars, however, dropped their second game of the tournament to event mainstay Liberal (Kan.) BeeJays, 11-7, as the they led 6-0 only to fall behind, 7-6. The Stars tied the game, 7-all, but the BeeJays scored four in the top of the ninth.
